Re: Hopewell family from Sutton Bonington Notts

Hi Jon , Very many thanks for your message. John Tarry & Ann Hopewell were my paternal GG Grandparents. My G Grandmother was Annie Tarry, the youngest of the family. I am very grateful to my cousin in California , who is a very experienced genealogist and has been researching the family for many years. His ancestor was Harriet Tarry, my GGrandmother's elder sister. I do have images of the entries for William Tarry's military record , and I am fairly sure that the details are from a old military register / record book , but cannot remember its title. Regarding the Sutton Bonington, Nottinghamshire connection -William Hopewell came from Hoton , Leicestershire. My WARD line were there for a couple of generations , they had boats on the canals. They moved to Leicester when the railways led to the decline of canal traffic. When I posted this message I ws exploring the possibily of earlier connections between my Ward and Hopewell lines. I have a lot of data relating to various lines of Hopewells, including being in touch with descendants in the UK and Tasmania. I would very much like to exchange information with you, and in the meantime will write to my cousin in California for the source of the military records. I will contact you via the Ancestry message system with my email address. Very best wishes, Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

Interested to see what you posted about William Hopewell who is a direct ancestor of mine. I knew he had children born in Ireland and had speculated as to whether this was due to military service.

Ann, who was born in Ireland, is also my ancestor. The Hopewell name was passed on through her son Joseph who was born illegitimately in the Leicester workhouse in 1816. Ann subsequently married John Tarry but Joseph never took his name.

I believe the National Archives hold records of the 24th Light Dragoons for this period. Is that where you found the information? I am planning to pay a visit so if this was not your source happy to share anything I find.

regards
Jon

Re: Hopewell's of Nova Scotia

I am just beginning this process, but my great-grandfather was supposedly adopted by a Hopewell who was originally from Nova Scotia and emigrated to the US (or ended up there eventually) at age eleven. This male Hopewell, who died sometime in the 50s in Philadelphia, I believe, was also one of thirteen children. So Marie could have been his sister? or his aunt? I found a James Hopewell who was born in 1885 in Halifax who is possibly my (adopted) g,great-grandfather or one generation prior.

I will be trying to get more information (like first names!)

Hi,

Thanks for your swift response. I was hoping that you may have done research at the county office itself. I was living in the UK until recently and did some at both Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire into Reffin but was not able to finish the searches and therefore did not reach any more definitive conclusions on Ann's lineage. However I am planning to start this process again shortly.

Regards,

Juliet

Mary Reffin m. John Hopewell

I know a little about Mary Reffin:

She was born about 1775: it is likely that she was the daughter of Richard Reffin and Elizabeth, and bap. 7 Nov. 1777 at Thurmaston, Leicester (see IGI).

She married John Hopewell, a canal boatman, on 31st May 1803 at Leicester All Saints. They may have lived on the water, and had no fixed abode.

They had 11 children, baptised at Mountsorrel and Sileby Leicestershire, and Nottingham St Peter.

She was buried 10 January 1848 at Nottingham St Peter.

As you are aware, your Ann is the daughter of John Reffin and Ann, according to the IGI.

Their village Walton on the Wolds is not far away, so I imagine the families are related, though I haven’t done enough research in this area yet.
Maribeth, my Hopewell ancestors came to West New Jersey (they were Quakers) and settled there. They lived just south of Camden, NJ and then migrated south. Hopewell, NJ is much further north. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a connection that I am aware of between your Keziah and my Hopewell family. Have you tracked back where her ancestors immigrated from? Mine are from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.

Mike. Hi. We corresponded in 2003. I am descended from the Northumberland County, PA branch of the Hopewell family. In 2003, you tipped me off to the wonderful Paul William Hopewell book which I located at the Cincinnati library and they copied the parts of interest to me.

I see you are still active. Are you trying to track the Northumberland line because, if so, I have documented some things that escaped the notice of Paul though there are a few mysteries still unsolved.

Let me know at oakeymertz @ec.rr.com.

Barbara,

I do indeed have the transcript of the Bible that was included in a detailed manuscript from Paul William Hopewell, a descendant of Nathaniel's. I am a direct descendant of Joseph Hopewell and have done extensive research into his descendants. My mother's maiden name was Hopewell.

Interestingly, I have not heard of Cornelius in any of the records I have found so this is news to me. I also did not know about Catherine. The manuscript also mentions a Sarah who seems to have been a daughter of John and Christian and married Robert Lee (based on a reference to Sarah's mother, Christian Hopewell).

This is also the first time I have seen Christian's surname spelled Wayne. I have it as Wain in all the information I possess.

Please contact me directly at smbenson58@gmail.com and we can decide how to best trade information. I am very happy to meet a distant cousin.

Mike Benson

We found a reference to the Hopewell family bible in possession of the Hunterdon County History Society at Flemington N.J. and I wrote to the secretary asking for information about the family who owned it. Unfortunately I never received a reply, maybe the letter never reached the appropriate place. Do you have a transcript from the Bible?

I am a direct descendant of Cornelius, brother of Nathaniel and Joseph. These last two disappeared from our family tree and except for their birth dates I have no information about them. For this reason I should be very interested to know their subsequent history and that of their descendants. Over many years I have developed a pedigree of the Hopewell family who, as you say, were Quakers living in the 17th and 18th centuries at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. The earliest Hopewell I have traced is John, a framework knitter and father of Nathaniel and Joseph, who was married to Christian Wayne in 1687.

John Hopewell  b 1662-3, d 1709, married  at Wilford, Notts 1687 Christian Wayne b 1665-6, d 1749;  both were buried in the Quaker graveyard at Mansfield (now destroyed by a road);
their children were: John b 1688, Robert b 1687-8, Cornelius b 1689-90, Nathaniel b 1695, Daniel b 1697, Christian (F) b 1700, Elizabeth b 1702, Joseph b 1705, Catherine.

I should be pleased to pass on to you any information about descendants in England. We have copies of the Will and Inventory of the possessions of John Hopewell senr. at his death and also an account of litigation regarding the inheritance Christian had from her uncle Lancelot Wayne.

My single name is Hopewell and I live in the UK.

Hi there,

Coming in on this a little late! I don't have your Sarah, but I am also descended from the Hopewell family of Park/Attercliffe. I don't have a great deal of info as yet, but there might be a link somewhere along the line.

My 4th g-grandparents were James Hopewell and Mary Hanson, who were married in Doncaster and had at least nine children there. Their eldest son William, born about 1816, married Sarah Holmes in Sheffield, worked as a Whitesmith and Bellhanger, and lived in the Park/Atterchliffe area. I'm descended from their daughter Ann Hopewell (b 1842), who married George Greensmith. Their son Robert Greensmith was my great-grandfather. If any of that sounds familiar, do get in touch.

Kitty.

Joanne,

Thanks for the reply and information.

You're probably aware of this, but Nancy Calvert appears as head of a household in the 1830 census in Sullivan County, IN. From this, I had initially assumed this meant she was widowed. But, this would not be the case if Robert Calvert died in 1844. Perhaps Robert and Nancy had divorced by 1830? If Robert was employed at someone else's household or farm, this could explain why we can't find him in the 1830 or 1840 census.

Also on that same 1830 census page, there is an Isaiah Calvert with a wife and one young son. I have to think this was an elder son of Robert and Nancy, since Robert's father's name was Isaiah.

Are you familiar with the biographical sketch on James W. Calvert in Wolfe's 1909 History of Sullivan County? This James was a son of Robert Calvert and Sarah Snapp. I suspect this Robert Calvert was the son of Robert Calvert Sr. and Nancy Hopewell.

Actually my ancestor Lewis Hopewell was not the son of John Hopewell Jr.; rather, he was a brother of John Jr. In other words, Lewis was a son of John Hopewell Sr. and Sarah Edwards. Lewis Hopewell was born ca. 1794, died 1848, and his wife was Mary Ann Haskins.
Hello Joanne,

I am the author of the "huge file" that is being referred to. Unfortunately I have not attempted any serious study on Nancy and her line. I'm sure you have more information than I do. Here is what I have on her in my work thus far:
___________________________________________________

Nancy Hopewell
b. ca. 1787
d. unknown
m. 1803 Robert Calvert
b. ca. 1783
d. 1844 (unverified) – Sullivan County, IN

Here is another of John and Sarah’s children who followed others in their family to Sullivan County, Indiana. Nancy and Robert were married in Mercer County, KY which is consistent with the observation that John and Sarah were living there in 1800 (per the Tax List).
___________________________________________________

Nancy was a sister of my direct ancestor, Lewis Hopewell who proliferated a large line of descendants in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Also I am not aware that her name included "Margaret". There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding John and Sarah (Edwards) Hopewell's children. "Margaret" often appears in such lists, however I do not believe there was a daughter by that name.

I don't know who John Hopewell's parents were. That may forever remain a mystery. Family tradition says that he was "either born in Virginia, or born in England and brought there [Virginia] as a baby”. I’ve found no relation established or suggested between John and any of the other 18th-century Hopewells in Virginia, although it is certainly possible but without any records or knowledge having survived.

Sincerely,

Jay Schoonover
Jay..............I am glad to get your feed back…….My cousin and I had the same feeling you did about Nancy Calvert that appears in the 1830 Sullivan Co., In census. It is a possibility that Robert was working some other place. I feel that she was not a widow at that time. However we cannot explain where Robert was at this time.

This Isaiah Calvert that you have found, I to have been wondering about. There is a possibility that he was the son of my Robert & Nancy. I will continue to think about this and see if I can make a connection.

Yes I am familiar with James W. Calvert. He was quite an agriculturalist it looks like. My James Calvert (2nd g-grandfather) being the son of Robert & Nancy thus a brother to The Robert Calvert you mention, they died the same year. Both Robert & James married ladies named Sarah. My 2nd g-grandfather James Calvert married Sarah Emaline Hedden. There is a little mix up with these two women. I was researching my 2nd g-grandmother and found that a Sarah Calvert married a Stephen Cameron. At first I thought it was my 2nd g-grandmother Sarah, but it ended up being Sarah Snapp/Calvert. It is quite a story and if you are interested I can send it to you directly to your e-mail address.

Now I see which Lewis Hopewell you are connected to. Was Lewis and Mary Ann married in Kentucky or Sullivan Co., IN? When were they married? I have the name of their children but I do not have dates, etc for them. I would very much like to have history of Lewis & Mary Ann’s children. Please feel free to send it to my e-mail address……….Joanne
I am searching for parents of John Hopewell b. 1751 VA. d. 6 Aug 1826 in Haddon Twp., Sullivan Co., IN. Buried at Mount Zion Cemetery, New Lebanon, Haddon Twp., Sullivan Co., IN.

John Hopewell Sr. was in the Virginia PVT Morganac's Rifle Reg. Rev. War, granted U.S. pension in 1818 for service during the Revolutionary War. At that time his feet were frozen off at Valley Forge. He migrated to Sullivan County in 1819 from Bullitt County, Kentucky.
John served as a Private in Morgan's VA Rifle Regt. during the Revolutionary War: Pension No. 36591.
Enlisted near Winchester, Fir., Spring of 1777, in Captain Charles Porterfield’s and Gabriel Long's Company, Col. Morgan's Virginia. Regt.
Was at the taking of Burgoyne and Monmouth. Served until spring of 1789.
(A monument has been erected at Mt. Zion Cemetery in the shape of a large Tree Trunk by the D.A.R. This was their way of honoring him, since he lost both feet in the Revolutionary War and lived with wooden feet the rest of his life.) He lost his shoes in the mud while the fighting was going on and his fee froze. He lived the rest of his life with wooden feet. He was a successful farmer and had a very thriving family.

I have visted Mt. Zion Cemetery and took pictures of the Monumnet. It has John's inscription on one side and Sarah Edwards on the other.

Anyone having history of John Hopewell b. 1751 I would like to hear from and would very much like to know who his Father & Mother was...........Thank you...........Joanne Crawford Ikeda
Does anyone out there have information about the Samuel Hopewell in Louisville, KY on the 1880 census? Wife's name Elizabeth Alcorn; children named Ransom, Mary, Zack, and Minnie on that census. Believe that Samuel's father was John Hopewell and his mother was Mary Wood or Woods. Samuel died in Louisville in 1912 at the Home for the Aged and Infirm.

Thank you for replying. I have e-mailed you directly and hope that you get that message as this certainly sounds like my Hopewell line. My 2X great grandfather Samuel Hopewell's birthday was Feb. 8, 1842 according to the information on his death certificate in 1912 and I assumed the 1850 IN census listing of the John Hopewell family was the correct one. It's good to hear that I've been on the right track and I hope to hear from you again soon with more on this family line. I will contact the library you mentioned for information about the old bible and try to get copies of the pages you mentioned. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Tamara

Seeking any information about Hugh HOPEWELL and Richard HOPEWELL who were in St. Mary's County, Maryland around the early 1700s.

The will of a John WISEMAN was written in 1703 and proved in court in St. Mary's County in 1704. In the will he bequeathed lands to his sons (including a John, Jr.) he had purchased from Hugh HOPEWELL. One of the appraisers of John WISEMAN's estate was a Richard HOPEWELL.

In 1753 in St. Mary's County a John WISEMAN witnessed the will of John SMITH. John SMITH's daughter was married to Hopewell ADAMS, an executor of John SMITH's will.

I am wondering if my Hopwell ADAMS' mother might have been a HOPEWELL before her marriage. The name HOPEWELL is not a common given name and wondered if anyone has information on HOPEWELL daughters of Hugh or Richard.

Hopewells of Evesham

James S Hopewell (born Abt 1797) and his sister Sarah (who married John Cowden) appear in Northumberland, PA by about 1830. It is said in a county history (which I have found to be very unreliable generally) that James came with his father John from NJ.

I have therefore gone hunting for him and have found all these people that you seem to be familiar with -- Nathaniel and Elizabeth and Nathaniel's son Daniel and Mark Beckett. And I have seen Daniel's will abstracted wherein he names his son Beckits and his "other son".

Lots of names in the family of James tie into this same family in Evesham and so I have theorized that the mysterious John is the "other son." And then I found a random Rebecca Hopewell floating around in Burlington County in the 1830 Census. Rebecca is a name in the James S family too so I have further theorized that Rebecca was John's wife.

But I have no proof. Does that bible or anything else you have come across give any indication who the mysterious John may have been? Was Daniel's other son named John?

I'd love to hear from you on the board or at oakeymertz@att.net. I have found information on Elizabeth's and Mary Beckett's ancestors but haven't yet decided if it is relevant to me.

Hi Cheryl,

Good to hear from you - and yes, I think this is the same family. Ann is my g-g-grandmother as well; she married George Greensmith and had (I think) five children. One of them, Robert Greensmith born 1873, is my g-grandfather. He married Eliza Berry in 1902 and had four children, but was then killed in action in 1915 in Belgium. I still have his memorial brass plaque. Eliza remarried some time later to John Bennett, and had two more sons.

You're welcome to contact me direct – I don't have masses of information, but am happy to share what I have figured out.

Hi Peter, By amazing coincidence, only last weekend I researched John Ward and his wife Elizabeth Bollard from Sutton Bonington. John was the brother of my GG Grandfather. In some of the censuses I noticed that they had a Hopewell family as neighbours. This is of interest to me as one of my ancestors was William Hopewell (b. 7/8/1766 Hoton LEI, d. 7/5/1844 Leicester). William Hopewell served in the 24th Light Dragoons in Ireland to 1800. His daughter Ann was born in Ireland but as far as I can tell the family were from Leicestershire. Would be happy to provide further data from my sides if you feel there may be a connection. Other Sutton Bonington names I am associated with are Withers and Hemsley.

Kind regards, Malcolm Ward

Re: Sarah Ostick Hopewell. Attercliffe Sheffield England.

Hi Kitty,

I came across this posting and I believe we are related. Ann Hopewell is my great greatgrandmother Mary Hopewell Greaves, sister. Her father was William and her mother was Sarah. On the marriage certificate William is listed as a bellhanger. There was also another sister Charlotte. In the 1881 census Mary was living with her sister Ann Greensmith. Does this match with your information.
