It's good to hear from you, Annie. Good news for you--the branch of the Horgan(Harrigan)family that emmigrated to New Brunswick are the ones directly related to Bing Crosby. I'm quite certain that my family is directly related as well, even though they left sooner than the ones settling in New Brunswick. My Dad's granddad was John Harrigan. He was the son of David Daniel Harrigan and Elizabeth Roche. This David was the son of David Sr. and Christiana Ahearn (Hearn) e-mail me and I will send you the information I have on Bing's family.
Talk later. Colleen

I am looking for any details of the above. He seems to have been born in Cork. He joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers. Although under age he was sent to France in August 1914. He was killed in February 1915, though the reported date of his death could be August 1914.

Any information about him and/or his family would be gratefully received.

I think we may be related - I have a Margaret Horgan born 1865 in County Cork, daughter of Matthew Horgan and Mary McCarthy, if I've done all the research right. I know Mary McCarthy is right, at least, as that is something I've been told by family.

Horgans very much wanted for DNA project

People named Horgan are cordially invited to join the O'Hourihane DNA projects. This will be my only announcement on this board.

Historically, the Horgans have been big in Cork and Kerry. Some historians give a compelling reason to believe that Horgan was the orginal surname of some of the Hourihanes in Cork.

The project home is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~skibbgirl/...
Shortcut: http://tinyurl.com/HourihaneDNAProject

I am looking for people of Irish descent named some variation of Horan, Horgan, Horrigan, Hanrahan, Hourihan, and even Howard to join the project. Due to a number of factors, there is a possibility that these surnames have historically been confused with each other.

The project is looking for Y-DNA test participants and also autosomal DNA test participants. The project contains a background; goals; a surname distribution map and other items of interest. The project aims to bring DNA clarity to these surnames.

I am trying to find any information on my Horgan family. My grandfather's name was Wilbert Horgan. His father's name was listed on death certificate as William C Horgan. A census record showed his mother's name was Marie Horgan and he had a brother, William Horgan, listed. His death certificate states that he was born in California in 1930, however research shows him born in Minnesota around 1928. Any info would be great, but I would really love to find info descending from my great-grandfather, William C Horgan.

I hope other Horgan families check out my theory. I can bet that most families are having trouble finding out much early information, because they are looking in the worng place. I also believe you will find no record of your family before the mid to late 1820's. Check out, The Battle Of Carriganima, and The Whiteboys in Muskerry.A quote from this article:
"Denis Murphy, Timothy Hallahan, Richard Drummy and Edward Breen, five men who had taken part in the Deshure affray, except for the last named who was captured at Keimaneigh. They were all to be executed at Deshure crossroads.
Also in the car were the four men to be hanged in Carriganima – Daniel Murphy, Patrick Lehane, Thomas Goggin and Cronelius Lucy. Inside the car with them travelled Fr. Horgan, a man who had been parish priest in Clondrohid for fifteen years up till then; he was especially grieved at the situation as he himself was born in Carriganimma and he knew the doomed men personally. With him was Fr. Ryan of Macroom, while two other clergymen travelled in a chaise."
My theory is that the Horgan families of that area were allowed to get out of town because of their priest relative. I also believe that the ones leaving right after this happened were the most involved- going to Canada, Kerry, or the US. The ones leaving later, went to the Schull area and waited until they had proper paperwork before they left. I am proud to think that I might be related to those who fought tyranny with hardly any clothes on their backs. It was a desperate situation. Many of those Horgan's (Harrigan) that left in the 1830's and moved to New Brunswick are reatives of Bing Crosby. I found that the Lucey family web site has a list of families that married in. Many of them tie to our family. Maybe it's just a theory, but tythe records in 1766 show where the Horgan families were living in Cork. Cornelius was there. Please check this out and see if you agree. Thanks. Colleen

The Irish had a naming system that I believe carried on through generations. You mentioned Daniel, John, we don't have a an old Timothy in my (Horgan) Harrigan line- that I know of. David Daniel Horgan married Christiana Hearn (Ahearn)about about 1820 and left Co. Cork in the mid to late 1820's, we believe. They lived in Albion, Peel County Ontario, Canada before settling in Ellis Twp. of Perth County by the late 1830's. They had children: Daniel, David, Eleanor, William, and we believe also; Margaret, Catherine, Edward, and possibly John and Francis. There were two Catholic Priests named David Horgan and Daniel Horgan who were uncle and nephew, born in the Macroom area. Ballyvournay- I believe. I can't find any Internet sites that have a transcription of people buried in the cemetery. The church records state;

Rev. Daniel Horgan CC
Deceased
Parish Of Birth
Kilmurry
Date Of Death
3/2/1865
Place Of Death
The Presbytery, Schull, Co. Cork
Place Of Burial
The family burial plot Macroom, Co. Cork
Obituary
The Solemn Requiem Mass took place at St. Patrick's Church, Dunmanway, Co. Cork.

Would you know if there is a place that this information would be posted? Any help is much appreciated.
Colleen

The online telephone directory for kerry has 33 Horgan's 3 of which are in Castleisland, 14 Cahill, 3 in Castleisland and 11 Connor in Kerry. Might be worth six stamps to those in Castleisland.

Maglass is townland in two Parish's Nohaval and Ballymacelligott, in the Union of Tralee.
Castleisland is also a Parish.

Annette

You could look through shipping records, try Ellis Is. NY
as they have passengers going in both directions to and from Ireland.

1869 are Civil Records and copies of anything after 1864 can be obtained from the General Registry Office, Dublin
www.groireland.ie

Kerry does not belong to an organization/foundation of irish genealogy offices, so luckily the records you are looking for are after 1864.

I think there maybe two different Daniel Horgan's one with a wife Bridget Connor and and the other Bridget Cahil.

www.familysearch.org has civil records from Kerry

Bridget Horgan born 24 Oct. 1869 #621 Castleisland, Kerry
#101199 Daniel Horgan/Bridget Connor

Honora Horgan born 14 May 1868 #824 Castleisland
Daniel Hogan/Bridget Cahill #101169

the same record are on a CD I have from the LDS. The only possibility is that the person who did the transcribing copied the wrong wife's surname.

I didn't understand Thaddeus and Daniel Horgan know as Timothy. Is Timothy a surname? or a place

Many Kate and Mary's and father Daniel - wrong wife.

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County
www.igp-web.com + county (various records)

Annette Code

Hi, I think your husband's family came from Kilcorney area of Cork. There were three brothers, Daniel, John(I'm a descendant of his line) & Timothy and one sister Julia. Julia moved to Newburyport and married a Patrick Sullivan there approx 1853. Her brother Daniel's 9 children all moved to Haverhill, MA, some of them lived with their Aunt Julia before they got married there. If you take a look at this book it has photos of Daceys/Horgans in the Haverhill area, The Irish in Haverhill , MA, Volume II By Patricia Trainor O'Malley. It includes contributions from Bob Gardella who is related to the Horgans also and he is a member of ancestry.com also. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help out in any other way and take a look through my photos from MA your husband might recognise someone !! Regards Ciara
