George Washington Rockwell and Sibba Hornaday were also my great great grand parents. I do have this attached picture of them and I do know that Sibba goes by :Sibhera, Sibbey, Sibbia, Libby, Libbia and Silba in the Cesus and records.

I aso know that Sibbas parents were born in North Carolina and lived in Cane Creek. From Butler County, Ohio the family moved to Wabash County, Indiana and settled in the Chester Township area. Family records indicate that George's wife "Sibba is the only known centenarian in the Hornaday family." However, after locating her death records it was found that she died at the age of 80 and perhaps it was meant that she was an octogenarian. In the 1890's Indiana census, Sibba(age 75) is found living with her sister, Kezia Hornaday (age77) and her nephew, Samuel Hornaday (Age37 b August 1862 in Indiana) in Chester Township, Wabash County, Indiana

George and Sibba Rockwell are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery(no marker).

obit of Harvey Hornaday

This is from the Harvey B Ledman's Diary and Scrapbook. He was the nephew of this Harvey Hornaday (his mother's brother). Harvey Hornaday was the son of John Hornaday and Isabel(Isabella) Vandever. I don't have a date for the article, but it was in the Carroll county Indiana paper.

Harvey Hornaday Dies At Home Hospital,Lafayette

The following, taken from the Lafayette Courier-Journal,will be of interest to Carroll county readers of the Democrat, especially those in the Flora vicinity.
"Harvey J Hornaday, for many years a well known resident of Lafayette, died suddenly at the Home hospital at Lafayette at 2:45 o'clock Monday, January 7th, of peritonitis. He was born near Flora, Carroll county, March 5 1848,and came to Lafayette for residence in 1896. When 16 years of age he enlisted in the Union army and served for eight months as a corporal in Company E, 154th Indiana Volunteers. Returning from the war he worked for a short time on his father's farm and then took a position with the Hall Safe and Lock Company as a salesman. In 1896 he came to Lafayette and engaged in the real estate and insurance business, being active until a short time ago. He was a staunch Repulican in politics and at one time served as a member of the city council from the sixth ward. He attended Trinity ME church and was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 15, Odd Fellows.
Mr. Hornanday was twice married. His first wife was Miss Rachel Timmons, to whom he was married August 16th 1870. She died August 25, 1919 and in September 1923, he was married to Mrs. WH Murphy, of Darlington. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. HA Wallis, of Lafayette, and two foster children, Mrs. Willis Shelly, of Stroh, Indiana, and Charles Hornaday, of Auburn. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, January 9th at 2:30. Interment was at the Springvale cemetery."

Rita Lou Hornaday Kirby

My Mother Rita Lou Hornaday Kirby passed away November 8, 2004. She was the daughter of John Leslie Hornaday and Vera May Hale Hornaday Blomquist.

The whereabouts of her father, who disappeared when she was a very small child, have since been somewhat resolved. John Leslie Hornaday passed away in California, lung cancer. His wife at that time was not Vera.

I would appreciate anyone having any information on his second wife or her family to contact me. Thanks.

obit for Isabel (Vandever) Hornaday

This article was in the Harvey Ledman's Diary and Scrapbook. I don't know what newspaper it was in, but he lived in Lafayette, Indiana. The article had a hand written date of Aug 30, 1901 on it.

Mrs. Isabelle Hornaday
The death of Mrs. Isabelle Hornaday occured at 4:00 Thursday afternoon at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Englert, in Battle Creek, dysentery being the cause, after an illness of but one day. Mrs. Hornaday fractured her right hip two years ago while visiting her daughter, Mrs.H.A. Wallace, after which she was brought to the home of her son, Harvey J Hornaday, this city. A week ago Sunday she was taken to the home of Mrs. John Englert. She was conscious up to the hour of her death. Mrs. Hornaday was born in Preble county, Ohio, 89 years ago next October the 10th. She was the widow of John Hornaday and of the twelve children born to her but two survive, Harvey J Hornaday and Mrs. Wallace. Her husband died at Pyrmont sixteen years ago. Mrs. Hornaday was born and reared a Dunkard and was a woman of noble character. She had many warm friends and admirers.(note-here there seems to be a printing error)The funeral will take place tomorrow; burial in Pry-friends and admirers. (note-the article appears to continue correctly)The funeral services were held Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in Pyrmont, a Dunkard minister officiating.(End of obituary)

Note- Isabel Vandever Hornaday was Harvey Ledman's maternal grandmother.

It may be just a coincidence, but JOHN M. HORNADAY married MARIETTA PAYNE on January 22, 1835 in Washington County, Indiana.

It is possible your Marietta was descended from them through one of their male children:

Emory P. Hornaday born circa 1843 in Indiana; living in Vienna Twp., Scott Co. IN in 1860.

Isiah O. Hornaday born circa 1849 in Indiana; living in Vienna Twp., Scott Co. IN in 1860.

James M. Hornaday born circa 1840 in Indiana; living in Vienna Twp., Scott Co. IN in 1860.

Louis A. Hornaday born circa 1859 in Indiana; married 10-19-1881 to Mary E. Swift in Jackson Co. IN; remarried? 6-26-1917 to Louise G. Moses in Jackson Co. IN.

Thomas M. Hornaday born circa 1840 in Indiana; living in Vienna Twp., Scott Co. IN in 1860.

JOHN M. HORNADAY died in 1875 in Jackson County, Indiana, so it is likely that the entire family was living there at the time.
I can't speak for Gordon, but it's likely he was referring to "The Hornadays, Root and Branch: The Unfolding of an American Family" by Quinn Hornaday and Aline Hornaday, copyright 1979 Stockton Trade Press. According to the book, all Hornadays are descended from John and Christian Hornaday. The book's kind of hard to find; check with book search services or watch Ebay. It's also available on microfiche via your local Family History Center.

Hornaday in TN

Sarah Ann Hornaday b abt 1818 m. a James W. Proby and lived in Bedford Co TN. Her birthplace unknown but census states TN. The Proby & Terry family did make a trip into Ark. around 1840. There are NO Hornaday familes ever listed in the state of TN from 1820-1870 on Ancestry.com census records. Is Ancestry wrong and they missed them for 50 years or is there another reason they were not included in the records? Would like to know if she had a sister named Elizabeth that married a Terry. Terry and Probys are 1st cousins. Verbal family history suggests that Sarah was Cherokee. Grandfather states his grandmother Elizabeth was Cherokee. Grabbing at straws here.

thanks for the heads up on Sarah. You can never tell if family tales are fact or fiction and mine were fiction of a White man and a Cherokee female. It was the other way around. Since my posting I have found that my Terry line ( kin to the Proby m. to Sarah Hornady) are Irish and my Indian heritage is coming out of the Davis line that fathered my greatgrandmother Julia Terry. I traced that Davis family line to McCurtain Co Oklahoma in 1910, Choctaw Nation land. In 1920 the grandson was in the Creek Nation in OK.

You mentioned Estella Vestal Andrews who's mother was Mary Ann Woody. I believe that Estella married Nathan D. Andrews, charter member of Goldsboro Friends Meeting, Wayne County, NC.
My family records show that he married an Estella V. Andrews and that they had two children - named Will and Margaret. Nathan (Nathon) was born either 1874 or 1875 son of John William and Jane Francis (Davis) Andrews; died Jan 10, 1948 and is buried in New Garden MM, Guilford County, NC.
John William was my grandfather's (William Wiley Andrews)uncle and Nathan was called "Cousin Nathan". I would be pleased to know if you have any information for either Will or Margaret Andrews. Think they were born in late 1890's or early 1900's.

Dear Steve,
You are correct...NC. I happened onto a woman who has written a book on Hornadays (actually her deceased husband). It had my GGG Grandmother in it. Then it went back from her! So it was great. My Hornadays were scattered due to deaths and the original family being separated. Quite an interesting book. Lots of information on the Hornadays. I don't have information on the book but you might find it helpful too. Sincerely Tracie.
Hornaday family Lee & Chatham Counties, NC

In the tiny "Genealogy Room" at the Sanford Library in Lee County, NC there is a collection of index cards with abbreviated obituary information on them. At some point an amateur genealogist, long since deceased, was kind enough to fill out the cards with information from newspapers. This is what they have on the Hornaday family.

Hornaday, Ada, Sept 8, 1896 - Feb. 14, 1910 Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday, Aramina, Jan 27, 1861 - Jan 1, 1927, Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday Alfred "Bud" C., Feb 27, 1869 - Feb 25, 1947
Cemetery: Linwood. Graham County

Hornaday, Catherine, Oct 1, 1794 - Feb. 14. 1894. Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday, Ira D., March 19, 1886 - Jan 27, 1930. Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday, John M., Jan 29, 1859 - Feb 6, 1928
Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County
(Note: I checked for microfilmed newspaper but there was none for this time frame. I believe him to be the father of Ida Violette Hornaday who married Robert Dannell Williams.)

Hornaday, L.D., July 6, 1831 - July 3, 1896, Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday, Lessie (Bright) Oct. 11, 1896 - April 16, 1983
Cemetery: Shallow Well, Lee County.

Hornaday, Lewis Minter, June 28, 1884 - Jan. 19, 1919
Cemetery: Buffalo, Lee County

Hornaday, Margareta, March 15, 1836 - Aug 1, 1905,
Cemetery; Cool Springs Baptist Church, Lee County

Hornaday, Marvin, Oct 18, 1896 - Feb 13 - 1949
Cemetery: Shallow Well, Lee County.

Hornaday, Mary C. She was born around 1867 and died around 1907. Their daughter Eva was my grandma. Thanks for any info you can provide.
