Hello, I am Nicole Marie Ritzau formerly Nicole M. Hornbeak. I am the granddaugther of Rice Condra Hornbeak and Martha Ann Hornbeak; daughter of Richard Hornbeak. I am recently married in 2008 so I have a new last name but I just wanted to let you know that one side of the family is in Maryland. The other two brothers of my father are in San Antonio still and I have a brother Kevin Thoreau Hornbeak. I contacted Charlotte and John Hornbeak (son of Rice) to see if they can provide the information on our Cherokee ancestry.

Jill, I know this is a long time from your post, but my father was Robert Hornbeak, whose brother was your grandfather, Rice Condra Hornbeak. I, too, would like to get a copy of our Cherokee lineage and I think that John's wife, Charlotte, did have this researched at one time. The last time I talked to Earline (who is Earl Hornbeak's daughter), she told me this, too, but didn't have any information either.

Did you ever get to San Antonio and talk to Charlotte about that? I would appreciate very much hearing from you. My kids and grandkids want to know more about our Indian ancestry, as well as myself.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. My e mail is playtmusic@yahoo.com.

Thanks so much.

Jean Hornbeak Copeland

By the way it is nice to see something from one's kinfolk. If it wasn't for the internet, none of us would even have a clue about anything or who to talk to.

Re: University President

I just saw your posts on the Hornbeak at Trinity --
Here's what I found:

SAMUEL LEE HORNBEAK, Ph.D, LL.D.
(1907-1921 & 1933-1934)

Member of the faculty and ninth president of Trinity University. Dr. Hornbeak has been called "the grand old man of Trinity." He served the institution in various capacities for 41 years. He is the first non-ministerial president of Trinity University, the only one to serve until Duncan Wimpress.

Dr. Hornbeak viewed himself primarily as a teacher rather than administrator. Over the years he taught physics, chemistry, sociology, and economics. From 1901 to 1907 he served as Dean of the Faculty. In 1908 he became President of the University. He is remembered for being especially concerned with the academic preparation of teachers and concerned about the inadequacy of teacher pay at Trinity and elsewhere in Texas.

Notable achievements include the construction and dedication of Drane Hall, considered at the time (1912) the best dormitory in Texas, as well as initiating the first successful campaigns to develop Trinity's endowment. He was persistent in his efforts to forge a productive church-school relationship that would ensure the University's financial stability.

******************************
I am new to genealogy, and am looking for the parents of my great grandfather, William Robert Hornbeak. (1885-1950) W.R. was married first to Elizabeth(Bessie) Love Steele Hornbeak, and their eldest daughter, Virginia Camella Hornbeak Chapman, was my grandmother. I can find them living with Bessie's parents after 1910 in TN, MS, and MO, but do not know where to go before that. I would appreciate any help you could give me.
This is 2007 and a lot of time has passed, but my father Robert Hornbeak was Uncle Con's brother. I am trying to find out a lot of information about my great grandmother, Ruhama Catherine Thomas, who married James Payne. They had several children, but one daughter Digara Ann Payne, was the mother of my daddy and Uncle Con. Daddy had told me that his great grandmother (I believe( was full blooded Cherokee and I am can get as far as Ruhama and know her mother and father name, but nothing before that. Is this something that might interest you too? E mail me.
Hornback/Hornbeak are all all related to Hornbeck and they are Dutch, descendants of Warnaar van Hoornbeeke who came to the U. S. from Holland about 1630. I don't know of Hornbacher relating to Hornbeck at all, especially if it is German.

I'm not sure that it does, although I have seen some spellings that way (Hornbecker, Hornbeaker, etc.), probably due to the confusion with language differences from German to English. I posted in response to the original message on this thread from May 2002 -- it came up when I searched for "Hornbacher".

Hope that clears up any confusion.

My father's name was Robert Hornbeak. He was black and from Centerville, TN. My family has lived in Centerville, TN since the Civil War. My great grandfather was the only blacksmith in the town and is listed as the 2nd residence visited by the census taker in 1880. His house still stands off the town square and has been remodled, but I believe the shell of that home is his original home. His son, Robert Hornbeak, was a carpenter. He worked in Grinder's Switch for the railroad building homes and at a rock quarry site near there where he built homes. He built several homes in the Centerville area.

My father was not a judge; he was a barber. At the time Earline Hornbeak Guida called my home, my father had retired to Centerville. I would love to correspond with any one with information about the Hornbeak family from Centerville. Also, it is my understanding that my great grand father, Robert Hornbeak, was born a slave to a family named Fuchs or Fulks or Fowlkes. Anyone have information on that family? My great grandfather, Robert Hornbeak, would have been born around 1830s, in Dickson County, TN

Thank you

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/hsrc/home.htm

That is a web page I found about the Hornbeak/Hornbeck line. I mean my goodness it takes forever and i get so confused but I have narrowed it down to we all hornbeaks were Dutch, left during the inquisition to germany and somewhere onlong hte line we have had our ancestors coming to america at different times. So some are Hornbeck, Hornbeak, Hornbach, there is even a Hornbake library at the University I attended and everyone got my name wrong because of it. I registred the site www.hornbeak.net and use it for emailing basically. Some guy in nashville owns www.hornbeak.com but never answers my emails.

Anyways just to let you know Rice Condra Hornbeak is my grandfather as well. Kevin son of Richard Hornbeak son of Rice Hornbeak. Aunt Charlotte Hornbeak in San Antonio has done a great deal of research on this. I know techinically we still count as native american at 1/16 right now because someone was a full blooded cherokee. Eventually I will get it all straight and put it on www.hornbeak.net for everyone to see. btw feel free to email me with any questions or some salutations!

She named him Paul Olhausen, Jr Louise was never married to the father of her son..According to a family member he grew up to be an accountant. This baby is my half-brother and should be around 80 years old if still living. l930 census shows her living with her mother (Hattie Parsons Hornbeak) and her father James Gourley 'Goldie' Hornbeak. She had several siblings including Harold, Milbourn, Wallace, Russell, Virginia, Viven. The family, including Louise and her son moved to AR or MO when her son was a small boy.
Her brother Harold and his wife, Mary Alice lived in Ridgely, TN until their deaths in 1998 and 2001.
I would appreciate any info anyone has on this family.
