Hi Kevin--

I am also descended from William Colwell and Sally Hornbuckle through their son Richard Hornbuckle Caldwell (b.c. 1782 in Fairfax County, VA). Richard H. should be the 5th child in your list, followed by Nancy and another son William b. 1785 in Fairfax County Va.

Solomon Hornbuckle was married to Cassandra ? around 1770 in Virginia. Solomon was born c. 1745 in Stafford County, VA--his father was William Hornbuckle, and Solomon also had two brothers, William and Thomas.

Where does your great grandmother Martha Caldwell fit in? Fyi we have heard the same stories re the Hornbuckles being of American Indian descent but all the ones we know of were of English ancestry.

Let me know if you want to share information.

Thanks!

Patty

Just to say Hi as Walter Hornbucke was my ancestor too. My G3 Grandfather married into the family - a Mary Hornbuckle born in 1773.

Family history says that the Hornbuckles then owned a number of the lace factories for which Nottingham is famous and my G2 Grandfather seems to have travelled France on behalf of the company.

I don't have any special information on Walter's parents, i had always taken it to be Henry (1550) and Bennet Thompson but if you have found an other possibility I can't discount it.

Regards

David Shepherd.

Hi Debbie,

I'm a bit confused... and I'm wondering if your info has changed over the years since this post.

I have that there were two Samuel Hornbuckle's born within a few years of each other and were living in Greenup in 1860. One is the son of Wm and Charlotte Patton Hornbuckle and the other is the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Clutts Hornbuckle.

I have most of the the descendency you show, but attached to the other Samuel, the son of Elizabeth and Samuel. In addition and due to that, I have a different list of siblings.

Further, in 1900, I find a Samuel in Ashland and this is the one married to Emma at that time. And I find the other in Lawrence, OH living with a sister who's first name starts with an "M" but I can't read it and his daughter Alice is there. I notice his sister is the age of the sister, Mary, shown in the 1860 census, though the name on 1900, doesn't really look like Mary. In any case, I also thought it noteworthy that she is married to a John PATTON.

Last, the Samuel in Ashland lists his parent's birthplaces as KY (father) and OH (mother) which fits Samuel and Elizabeth Hornbuckle. The one in OH, lists KY for both parents, which fits William and Charlotte Patton.

I suspect (though I haven't got that far) that William and Samuel Sr are related, maybe brothers. But was wondering if what I had was wrong or your notes were wrong... or maybe you had found further info since doing your post.

Any info greatly appreciated.
LuAnne

Re: Hornbuckle family of North Carolina/Georgia/Alabama

My grandmother was Allie Belle Hornbuckle-Wilkey. She was born May 21, 1880 and died June 29, 1960. I have never been able to find out much on her family. She married my grandfather, William Nathan Wilkey, Sr. in the late 1800's in Trinity, Texas. Back in 1985 I contacted one of her nephew's in San Antonio, Tx. His name is James Hornbuckle. He sent me a copy of the Hornbuckle Family Bible. It shows D.W. Hornbuckle born March 7, 1877. I think this may have been her brother. James told me they did not know their grandparents names. Family gossip says my Grandmother was orphaned at an early age but I don't know if this is true. I think she was born either in Alabama or Georgia. If anyone has information on the Hornbuckles from either of those states please contact me. Thanks.

I am still searching for information on my grandmother, Allie Belle Hornbuckle-Wilkey. I contacted Leland Pound in June, 1985 and he was doing extensive research on the Hornbuckle family at that time. She was born in Alabama or Georgia in May 1880. I would appreciate any information you may have on my line of Hornbuckles.

The family in 1881, headed by John and Eliza are still in Leicestershire in 1891---only John Snr is now a Farmer and John Jnr is a Farmers son---so no Saddler---BTW the usuall Apprenticeship for a Saddler or most anything else was 7 Years. Then you became a Journeyman and finally a Master Saddler/Farrier/Wheelwright etc.
I have checked the 1891 census and can't find a John/Jack who is a Saddler.
Do you happen to have John/Jacks Indenture papers? They might help pinpoint where he was.

Dorothy

Jeppie Ellen Cates (Hornbuckle) need info on her Mother please

James R. Hornbuckle wrote a narrative report on his family history befor he died and his brother Robert Blair Hornbuckle sent it to me. right now i am trying to figure out who was the Mother of Lucy Ellen Cain.. we all know that Lucy is the mother of Jeppie ellen Cates who married ernest Charles Hornbuckle.. The narrative that Jeppie's son James wrote befor he died, stated that he had done some digging up and thought that Archibald Cain was Lucy's Father and that Louisa Gates may be her Mother, but James stated that he spoke with his mother Jeppie about his research, and she plainly stated that her grandmother was a woman named Mary, and that Mary had married a second time to a fellow named DODSON.. and that both DODSON and Mary moved to Hillsboro and died there, and are buried there in Hillsboro somewhere..........Now I dont know if DODSON is a forname or a surname... and i dont know who the father of Lucy Cain is either... the report has alot of unanswered questions in it... I have managed to fill in some missing information, but not all.
The report also states that James feels that Parthenia Woods was Lucy Cains Grandmother.... I'm hoping someone can help me feel in some of these gaps..
