I would be glad to pass on any information I have concering Gabriel. Briefly, there is a possibility that Gabriel's parents were William Horsley (b.1796) and Nancy Madden but additional documentation is needed to either prove or disprove this belief.

The first record I can find for Gabriel is a November 20, 1842 marriage license issued to James Horsley to marry Elizabeth Bloomfield in Carter County, KY, where he is a witness. As of this writing the relationship between James and Gabriel is unknown. Perhaps, Mary Polly Horsley is a sister to either or both men. Feel free to write me direct at rghorsley@aol.com should you have any questions.

My grandfather was born in Buffalo Creek - 1859. His mother (my great grand mother) was Mary (Polly) Horsley. I do think Mary had a brother whose name was Gabriel - an elderly aunt told me this information before I found the name listed. Not sure if Gabriel was her father or brother. But, since she was born circa 1826 it must have been a brother. I think Gabriel is listed as a next door neighbor to them in the 1850 Carter County census. Enoch Stone and Polly (not sure) - is there any information you can share.

There was a Gabriel Horsley and his wife Mariah (Springer) who had a son named James. This James was born at Buffalo Creek, Carter County, Ky in March of 1856. The family later moved to Lewis County. He later married Annie Petrie in Pittsburgh, Pa and died there in 1918.

In addition to James and John, Gabriel and Mariah (Springer) Horsley children also included: Artemesa, Rachel (1854), Elizabeth (1857), Simon (1858), Basheba (1863), William (1864), Charles (1872). I would be very interested in learning more about John Horsley and sharing with you any info I have available on Gabriel and Mariah Horsley.

I am trying to get more information on Drussie (spelling), Horsley Gifford, and her or her Father’s relationship to a John Horsley.

Drussie Horsley b 22 Jan 1908 KY dau of James H. Horsley & Coneney Melvina Dummitt,

Drussie married Watson Watt Gifford some time after 1930 and had 1 child, Drussie died 9 May 1972 KY.
This information from Kentucky Vital Statistics.

The 1910 Kentucky Mircode Index for Lewis Co. KY has Dresia age 2, daughter in the household of James H. Horsley age 41, wife Coneney age 40.

The 1920 U.S. KY. Lewis Co. census has her name spelled Druza Horesley age 11.

I can not find her on the 1930 census or a marriage bond for her to Watt Gifford.

A Kentucky death certificate has James Henry Horsley died, 9 Aug.1936, parents were J. Benj. Horsley & Mary Fultz.

I am also trying to determine if James H. Horsley & the John Horsley below are related.

John Horsley b abt. 1867 KY son of Gabriel Horsley & Mariah unknown, married Mary E. Scott.abt 1891 had daughter Liddie Florence Horsley abt 1894 . Liddie married William Thomas Gifford 22 Jan 1910 in Petersville Lewis CO. KY.

The names Horsely & Drussie appears with different spellings, so not positive that I might not be overlooking something.

Dear Milisia,

Thank you very much for this information on Ben Davis and Lula Laura Exie Horsley. It certainly clears up my questions, especially since "Bush Davis" is obviously for "Bushrod" and not for a female ancestor whose maiden name was Bush as I thought possible.

I see in your first post in this thread that you asked for information about the marriage of James Horsley (Jr) and a Margaret Valentine. Since your post is now 2 years old, you've probably already found my post to several message boards in Jan 2009 that tells what I found about James Jr's wife, and that she was not Margaret Valentine.

In case you missed it, you can read it easiest at the Horsley GenForum URL below. There's also a post about Richard Horsley Sr's wife. Both are dated 8 Jan 2009. Feel free to write with any questions or corrections you might have. Thanks again for your help with Bush Davis.
-Joan (jhorsley46@yahoo.com)
- - - - - -
"Patience, wife of James Horsley Jr., MD>VA 1700's":
http://genforum.genealogy.com/horsley/messages/758.html

"Wife of Richard Horsley, Halifax Co, VA, late 1700's":
http://genforum.genealogy.com/horsley/messages/759.html

Unproven Horsley research: *There is an Emma Horsley, married William Devereux, Liverpool, June qtr., 1866, 8b/424. Not found in IGI. There is a birth for Emma Horsley, Norton by Malton, Yorkshire, January 1, 1835. Her parents: James Horsley and Jane Wood, married there February 26, 1834. James appears to have been born there May 6, 1810, to Thomas and Elizabeth Horsley. Nothing further found for Jane Wood. Any advice appreciated for NZ and OZ families.

I would be interested to make touch with any relatives of Roy C. Horsley b1919 Liverpool, son of Robert (Jack) Horsley and Lilian Walker, brother of Edwin Horsley. Emigrated to Canada after WWII and moved to the USA since. Possibly died 1984, Kent County, Michigan.
I have undertaken some research which takes the family history back to around 1750 in Lincolnshire, which I would be happy to pass on.

There is a Maryland Chancery Court case that proves Joseph Horsley, whose widow Rosamond married Richard Ladd, died with no heirs. By the laws of primogeniture, that would mean not only did he have no children, but also no brothers "of same blood"--that is, no brothers who had both the same parents as Joseph. The inclusion of females is more complicated, and I can't recall where/if any females would fit in this adjudication, but that's irrelevant in the search for male Horsley descendants.)

The Chancery Court record reads in part:

"The Sd Jurors further Say that the Sd Joseph Horsley dyed the five and Twentieth day of ffebruary in the year of our Lord God 1670 And one Richard Ladd & Rosamond his now wife the Relict of the Said Joseph Horsley... And the Said Jurors further Say that they Cannot find any heir of the Said Joseph Horshey within the Sd province of maryland nor elsewhere.."

From: Proceedings of the Court of Chancery, 1669-1679 Vol 51, Chancery Court Proceedings, 1676. (p 188-191),

The case can be found in the Maryland Archives Online and begins on the bottom of page 188 found here:
http://aomol.net/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/000001/0...

Personally, I believe there is some connection between Joseph Horsley and a younger James Horsley Sr. of Queen Annes County, MD, but haven't yet been able to make the connection. I think there are clues still to be traced in earlier VA records of Joseph Horsley's probable father Ralph Horsley who died in Northumberland County, VA.

(Just before posting this I saw the previous post from Mildred, and yes, Mildred, I do think it's the same family. Ralph almost certainly came to VA from Maryland.)

Joan Horsley
Will of Rezin (Reason) Tolbert, 1843

This will left property to his "sister in law," Rachel Horsley, then to her daughters. I believe Rachel is Rachel Mayhew, m to David Horsley. She had a brother named Reason but none of her three sisters seems to have married a Tolbert, so maybe the term, "sister in law," is more embracing. Does anyone have information on the relationship between Rezin (or Reason) Tolbert and Rachel Mayhew Horsley? Thanks.

Found a reference to a Henry Horsley in a chain of title to property known as "Choate's his Chance" in what is now Anne Arundel Co., MD (Annapolis area). Horsley apparently assigned this property to a Christopher Choate in about 1687-1688. Anybody know anything about this fellow? Also a later Henry Horsley in Annapolis signed a petition in May, 1774, dissenting from a citizen's resolution opposing the British blockade of Boston. Would like to know more about him, too.

Hi,

The Horsley name derives from England, where I live. There are several villages with the name Horsley in them in different parts of the country. My father's family had lived for several generations in and around Beverley in Yorkshire. Several male members of the family had emigrated to the US and Canada before the first World War. It seems unlikely, however, from this timing that your family are directly related to any of these.

More news: We have found Millicent (Milly) in 1881 with her aunt Lucy Marriott (George Marriott's sister) at 15 Priory Place, Lenton. There had been a question as to whether she was the daughter of someone else as she was not with Erasmus and Elizabeth in 1881. I have also found her in 1911 with Erasmus and Elizabeth aged 46 years old, so I think we can safely assume she is Elizabeth's daughter from her marriage to George.

We have also decided that Charles C. and Joseph C.C. Marriott with the family in the Censuses. I will see if I can find Charles/Joseph in 1911 and get back to you.

Regards,
Peta
