Patty,
Did you ever find what you needed re. Alvah Hortontown and the Hortontown Community Ground cemetary? I'll have to go and check the gravestone but I think Alvah might be buried in a cemetary that I purchased with the Calvery Methodist Church in Hortontown. Please respond to me by e-mail if you would like me to go up there.

Pat Manning

janice i've researched the lineage thoroughly from top to bottom and if you are looking for info. on the horton family now in belgrade, mo. barnabus is not the ancestor you are looking for. it gets a lil jumbled together in mowsley, leicestershire, england. it took myself and 3 cousins to run down the leeds to get the info correct. so if this line is the one your looking for e-mail me at suntzugod@yahoo.com
Bob, thank you for your response. I had seen that James in the military records but the link from the index didn't work so I couldn't verify that this was the correct one. I have written to the homeowner who has the stone and included your name and e-mail with a request that she send you a photo of the stone. It would be great if you know where he is buried so that the stone could be returned to the correct location. His listing doesn't show in the RI GenWeb name index so I have no idea where he was buried.

Thank you for your help and let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Hi Ed. As a resident of Cranston with Howard ancestors in Foster, I would love to see and get a photo of that gravestone. I have Horton ancestors and believe your subject to be >> James B. Horton b. about 1844. He enlisted as a resident of Coventry on 16 Aug. 1862, at the rank of Corporal. He mustered out on 26 June 1865 at New Bern, NC. He was there during the Yellow Fever outbreak and problems related to that " possibly " contributed to his early death. Searching Ancestry.com I find part of his service record in the 5th RI Heavy Artillery If you care to contact me re. this post or other RI residents my e-mail address is dnaschr@yahoo.com. I hope this helps. Bob Brown

Horton, died 2-13-1868 age 23 yr 6 mo.

I have been unable to find a match in the 1850 or 1860 census. Is anyone missing this individual?

In 2005, after much HORTON searching, I suspended my hunting for Eliphalet Case Horton. He was my legal, though not biological Gr. Grandfather. I wish otherwise but that doesn't work. I have about 12 to 15 years of info on this Southeaster New England Horton family. If you wish to contact me ...dnaschr@yahoo.com will work. dna searching has been an important part of my life for 50 years and I live in the area of interest so I know these folks existed. Levi Horton, b. 1799 was my Gr3 Grandfather. A photo of his gravestone is available free to family.

Horton. who was born about abt 1846. died May 26, 1884 Boonville, NY
On the 1870 census says he was born NY and parents were foreign born?? I have heard from some possibly France. His children have stated on the census that father born France??
Details I do have are Harry w. Horton married Euretta Melvina Hurd abt 1867, they lived in Boonville, NY IN 1870 AND 1880 and he died before the next census. His wife and children continued to live there after his death. I have been unable to find Harry w. Horton before 1870. Would appreciate and help
thanks in advance
Diane

Hi all Hortons,
I have been searching far and wide for Joel William Horton's ancestors. He was born June 24, 1814 in Maryland and moved not long after to Edgefield District, SC. His mother's name is supposedly Nancy Ann DuBignon and she is said to have died not long after his birth. His father's first name began with I or J and we think he may have died when Joel was young.
The DuBignon name was passed down to my great grandfather William DuBignon Horton, his son William DuBignon Horton,Jr. and to my father Arthur DuBignon Horton.
I have found no one who claims Nancy as part of the DuBignon clan and have had no luck with Joel's father.
Please send any clue you might find. They may have been descendants of Barnabas Horton but we have no proof.
Thanks to All,
Carolyn Horton Simpson

James Horton, Died Jackson Co., Georgia, 1848

I'm writing to share a discover I've made that, in my view, clenches proof of the identity of the James Horton who died in Jackson Co., GA, bef. 1 May 1848. This James Horton appears to have been born abt. 1760.

A number of sources have identified a James Horton who died in 1838 as the son of a James Horton who died 9 May 1782 in Orange Co., NC.

As I have worked on the Horton family in Jackson Co., GA, over quite a few years, I have come to the conclusion that the James Horton who died in Jackson Co. in 1848 is far more likely the son of the older James of Orange Co., NC. The estate records of the older James Horton in Orange Co. shows him having sons Thomas, Prosser, James, Sherwood, John, Jeremiah, and Stephen Horton.

All of these names can be found in the early records of Jackson Co., GA, along with an Ann Horton who was the widow of James Horton of Orange Co., and apparently the step-mother of his sons who went to GA. It appears that the entire family went to Jackson Co., GA, in the early 1800s.

The James who is son of the older James (d. 1782) of Orange Co., NC, married at least twice. On 4 Oct. 1782, he married Catherine Wallace. Catherine apparently died by 1796, when he married Elizabeth, daughter of James Carrington and Jemima Tatum in Orange Co. on 24 Aug. 1796.

The James Horton who died in 1848 in Jackson Co., GA, left the following children, per his estate records: Jesse (b. abt. 1783, NC); Laodicea/Dicy, b. 8 June 1797, Orange Co., NC; John, b. abt. 1804, Jackson Co., GA; and Thomas, b. abt. 1815, Jackson Co., GA.

Dicy married John Alexander Winn, son of Abner Winn and Lucretia Posey, in Jackson Co. on 11 Feb. 1819. She died 13 Nov. 1869 in Tuscaloosa Co., GA.

I have just found Dicy Horton Winn's obituary in the Methodist newspaper "Southern Christian Advocate." The obituary provides important proof to link the James Horton who died in 1848 in Jackson Co., GA, to James Horton (d. 1782) of Orange Co., NC. It states, "Mrs. Dicy Winn, wife of John A. Winn, and daughter of James and Elizabeth Horton, was born in Orange co., N. C., June 8th 1797, and died in Tuskaloosa co., Ala., Nov. 13th 1868. E. Nicholson."

It has been clear to me for some time now that Dicy Horton was the daughter of James Horton and Elizabeth Carrington, and that she was born in Orange Co., NC, where her father James was son of the James Horton who died in 1782 in Orange Co. This obituary adds to quite a bit of proof that points in that direction.

It is clear to me that the identification of the James Horton who died in 1838 in Jasper Co., GA, as son of James Horton of Orange Co., NC (d. 1782) is not correct. Nor are genealogies that try to combine the James of Jackson Co., GA, with the man who died in Jasper Co. correct.

The James Horton who died in 1848 in Jackson Co., GA, was the same man who married Elizabeth Carrington in Orange Co., NC, on 24 Aug. 1796, and as Dicy Horton Winn's obituary indicates, these were her parents. It is interesting to note that John A. Winn and Dicy Horton named a son James "Carrigan" Winn. Their first child, Elizabeth Ann, was also obviously named for Dicy's mother.

Need DNA from Thomas Horton of Springfield, MA

I am looking for someone that is a descendants from Thomas Horton of Springfield, MA to participate in the Horton Surname DNA project.
In the Horton surname project there is DNA from Thomas of Milton Ma and Rehoboth and Barnabus Horton from Southold LI, NY but not from Thomas of Springfield. I do not match the existing Hortons in the project. I Recently matched a person with the surname Franklin. His line is from Allegany County NY where there is a line from Thomas’s line Elias Horton son of Elisha and Ruth Case/Bishop. We need the DNA from Thomas to either possibly match or rule out this line. There is some miss information out there on Thomas Horton of Springfield lines that list some lines as his when the belong to Thomas of Milton. Having this DNA will help solve a few questions of lines. Please see http://www.familytreedna.com for information on how to participate. Please let me know if you choose to participate so I can follow the results.
Regards,
Jeff Horton

James Horton was born at Colnbrook, Bucks in 1861, parents James and Sarah Ann. He married Eliza Jane HORTON at Haddenham, Bucks in 1888. I have lost track of them since then but I think that he became a policeman and possibly lived at Clyde road, Brighton in 1834. Can anyone confirm this and give me the parish details of any deaths and burials.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

Hortons in Clark County Missouri

I'm looking for an Edward Horton who was born in Clark County, Missouri. More specifically, I'm looking for his parents and grandparents, etc. I have listed McGrady Horton as Edward Horton's father, but nothing else. Edward I. Horton was born in Clark County, MO on Sep. 18, 1853 and died Dec. 19, 1924. He was married to Florence Christena Jewell from New York. Any information about Edward and his parents would be helpful.
Thanks
