I have been researching Hosmers in CT and believe I am working on the same family.

Stephen Hosmer and Eleanor ____ were both born about 1760, were married about 1782 and died between 1840 and 1850. They lived most of their lives in Hartland, CT. I have not found the birthplace of Stephen Hosmer, but many settlers of Hartland came from East Haddam and there were Hosmers living in East Haddam.

They had 9 children all born in Hartland (Barbour index)
1.	Clarissa Hosmer 16 may 1783
2.	Anna Hosmer 16 aug 1785
3.	Aaron Hosmer 7 feb 1788
4.	Moses Hosmer 22 may 1790
5.	Collins Hosmer 28 dec 1793 (my ancestor)
6.	Stephen Hosmer, Jr. 22 mar 1797
7.	Solomon Hosmer 30 jun 1799
8.	Clarinda Hosmer 22 aug 1801
9.	Lavinia Hosmer 6 jul 1804

Aaron Hosmer married Deney ___ and moved first to Palmyra, NY and later to Marshall, MI. He died there 20 Nov 1880. He had a son named Alvin b. 1825 in CT.

I believe that Moses Hosmer may be the same as the one who lived in Burke, Caledonia, VT. He was married to Clarissa ___ . His tombstone in Woodmont Cemetery indicates that he was born in 1790 and died 20 sep 1828. The book “Robert Coe, puritan: his ancestors and descendants” indicates that Moses had a son named Alvin S Hosmer. Alvin was born 27 nov 1823 in VT and died in 1896 in Deerfield, MI.

Stephen Hosmer, Jr. may have also moved to VT. There is a Stephen Hosmer listed in the 1850 census for Wheelock, Caledonia, VT.

I have not been able to connect this family with other Hosmers living in CT. The “Hosmer Heritage” does not list any of them.

Dave
Hosmer family Bible in antiques shop

A few weeks ago in an antiques shop I found a family Bible that was inscribed on May 16, 1917 by Walker W.H. Hosmer, son of Harriet Potter Hosmer, wife of Simeon Hosmer, daughter of Philo Porter. I did not buy it, because I didn't know if any of the family were still alive. I have sent messages to a couple of people on Ancestry who have this family in their tree, but nobody has replied. If you are interested in this Bible, let me know and I will give you details about the shop. He was asking $35 for it, and I am sure it would be more to ship.

I don't have any document, but Prentice HOSMER, bap. in 1752, served in the Rev. War for CT. That is documented. His parents were Stephen HOSMER and Deliverance GRAVES. Stephen's parents were Thomas HOSMER and Ann PRENTISS (PRENTICE, and his brother was Graves. Thus we can see where Stephen got the names Prentice and Graves for two of his children. It makes sense that Graves could have named his son Prentice. As I said, I don't have any records on that.

Hosmer in INDIA - 1800s

Florence Hosmer, b. about 1869 in Murshidabad, Bengal, India to unknown Hosmer (b. ?) and Annie Williams (b. Cornwall)

Florence had a sister named Marie b. abt. 1872 in London, Middlesex. Their father may have died before 1876, location unknown.

Their mother Annie (now Thompson) and her Hosmer daughters are on the 1881 census of Keswick, Cumberland along with Annie's children by marriage in 1876 to H.V. Thompson.

There were a number of Hosmer's in India during the mid 1800s. Would anyone know which one Annie Williams may have been married to? I've gone through all of the Hosmer mg. records in the UK and can't match her with any Hosmer's.
Hi, I hope that you can help with this request. We are searching for a record that proves that Prentice Hosmer born in 1790 is the son of the Revolutionary Soldier named Graves Hosmer who served from Connecticut. Graves Hosmer must have moved to New York about 1800 and Prentice lived in Livingston County New York. Needed is some record that ties Prentice to his father, Grave Hosmer. Can you or any one help us?

Reviewing my family records in FamilyTreeMaker, I find that Prentiss Hosmer was born in 1790 in New London, CT, the first child of Graves Hosmer and Amy Congdon, and died 11 Feb 1846 in Niagra, NY.
I believe that Graves and family moved to Avon, Livingston, New York at 1798 or so, as the rest of their children born after that date were born in Avon.
Prentiss's younger brother,Stephen Rogers Hosmer, was my great-great grandfather.
I can't be sure of Prentiss's religion, but I do know that the first Hosmers to cross the Atlantic from Kent, England, were members of the Church of England.
I have more on the Hosmers, but likely you have the same.
John Sands
San Diego, California
619 224-8558
Re: Hosmer Family in Niagara Co, NY

Hi - yes - I'm still out here. :)

We started this discussion back in 2000 and here we are in 2008 - still related! lol

Sorry to say - I don't have concrete birth records for either my Sylvester or your Prentice in CT to Graves HOSMER and Amy CONGDON. For that matter, I don't have a concrete marriage for those parents either.

I put a lot of this aside as I did other things - but have returned to it full force again. This past summer, I spent an afternoon in Avon, Livingston Co, NY. (I was actually "passing through" on a long trip from western CT up the Hudson River, then due west on the NY State Thruway .. to spend more time researching over in Niagara and Erie Counties. But decided to "dip down" to Avon and see if I could get a photo of Graves and Amy HOSMER's tombstone in the cemetery there.

As it turned out, I met all sorts of folks - at the Town Hall - in the Historical Society - the town historian. Instead of a "camera click" - an afternoon went by. Got a photo of Grave's older brother Timothy HOSMER's tombstone (old original one - and new one) .. then had to gasp when I saw the condition of the obelisk type for Graves. Could barely make out his name, but did (if you look hard) verify that it says "Amy" on it with him - and their daughter Clarissa.

Full circle - I'm headed to a evening program later this month where a local DAR member will be speaking. I want to find out just what we need to know to prove that "link".

Haven't found Sylvester's birth in the Barbour records. Can't find an "Amy" Congdon there either although there are many other Congdon's in southern CT who had come over from Rhode Island. Perhaps it's not "New London" - but "New London County" and need to go town by town? Other children were born in NY after the family's migration to Ontario County (later called Livingston Co) in NY .. but .. we need those CT birth records .. before they moved.

No - I don't have a current address or e:mail for Mr Roberts either. I know he was working hard to learn more about my Sylvester HOSMER's wife, Rebecca KITTREDGE. I've got census records and tombstone photos in Niagara County, NY.

Another idea I've had this week is to check on Livingston Co probate records. Perhaps there's one for Graves HOSMER that mentions these sons? He died in 1838, so not sure how far back those go. For that matter, maybe his brother Timothy mentioned some of his nephews in a will he might have had?

Just thinking out loud here.

FYI - if you need to reach me - I've had two user names at Ancestry and just one at Rootsweb. However, I'm having trouble getting it all updated.

At Ancestry - I was "dasgen" - and now am "dasgen2".

At Rootsweb - I was - and am - "dasgen". Early on my user name pointed to CAhobbies "at" aol.com. Now it points to my new address dasgen "at" gmail.com. Think I got RSL updated ok. However, I think because of the Ancestry thing - if you click to see my post history? Looks like there's the big "old set" - and now a "new smaller set". Think I'll have to deal with techsupport at Ancestry to get everything combined.

I'll try for probate for Graves HOSMER next. (I have the will for Sylvester over in Niagara Co).

Do you - or anyone reading this - have any info or ideas for linking our two HOSMER brothers to who we believe are their parents (and the Rev War veteran) - Graves HOSMER and Amy CONGDON?

Thanks .. let's keep at it.
Deb

Some additional thoughts....I thought Jane Hosmer's middle name was Brown ( more Brown/Henry mother controversy) and thought she was listed in the 1860 Census in Porter/Niagara/NY as single? Also had a death date for her as 23 April 1881. I suspect this is web-based information and as she is not a direct ancestor have no original documentation.

Just a follow up to this thread I'd started.

I've recently received the civil war records for my 3rd great-grandfather John C.H. Hosmer. The records state that he was born in Nov 1830 in Alfred, Allegany county, New York. So the 1850 record for Cortlandville, age 19, chairmaker looks more like him.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has Hosmer genealogy for Alfred, Allegany.

Thank you

Suzette Estacaille
www.estacaille.org

I am trying to contact Mr. Roberts about whether he had copies of the family Bible (held by Merritt Hosmer, 1973) that he included in his 1984 The Hosmer Heritage. I have no email for him either. You can check that at: http://www.familysearch.org If he died in KS. you may be able to find a death record for him there which might have his parents names.
Hello, John. I am not a Hosmer (or Osmer) descendent, but I can carry back the line of Asenath Biddlecome Hosmer several generations, if that would interest you.

John, after checking, I find I definitely DID send it on 11/6/2006. It's likely it was blocked as spam, especially sence there was a PDF attachment. I am resending it, so please add my email address to your address book. Thanks,
Bruce Biddlecome
biddlecomehistory at yahoo dot com (spelled out to prevent robots from picking it up).
