Please use the correct information. What are your sources to your 7,000 names? You are using the wrong Thomas Houghten birthplace And marriage. I have the certificates. How can you use the year 1793, when he was born in 1782. The 1841 census for Pocklington states he is 58 years of age. 1851 census states he is 68 years of age. He was not married where you say. I have there marriage certificate.

Houghton Families in Western New York

I am a descendant of Nathan S. Houghton (b. 1795 Vermont) who married Cesty (Kesta) Walker (b. 1799 Vermont). Nathan and Cesty moved to Eagle, New York and had the following children: Angeline, Hiram, Ornan, and Warren. I am descended from Hiram Houghton (b. 1820), and then from his son, Edward Houghton (b. 1849). Edward's son, Royal Houghton (b. 1869) was my great-grandfather, and his son Grant Houghton (b. 1903) was my grandfather.

Nathan and Cesty are both buried in Lyonsburg Cemetery in Wyoming County. I have pictures of their gravesites if anyone is interested.

I am just looking to make contact with any other Houghtons, or Houghton descendants. I know that there are still quite a few Houghtons in the Wyoming County area...

Steve

Hi Jan
I forgot all about this message board and was just checking what I had posted on ancestry and found your reply from 2006 - you are probably not in Broome any more. I will also email you direct if your email is still current!

Rebecca amd Benjamin had two sons in Belfast, one of whom died as a baby, but they all moved to Dunedin NZ around 1862, where they stayed. Their daughter Sarah married Andrew Kerr and about 1883 they moved their family to Marrickville, Sydney. Her brotehr Frederick and half brother Samuel also moved to NSW. I found all the information relating to the Houghtons in Belfast and quite a bit on them in NZ, but do you know what happened to George Alfred Houghton ?

Hope to hear from you again

Di

Re: Houghton

Hello Janet,

I’m not researching the Houghton and Whitlam genealogies but found some information which I believe pertains to these families. For instance, I located James and Mary Ann Houghton and three of their children in the 1901 census living in a location of Bishop Bridge Rd, 17 Weeds Square, Thorpe, civil parish of Norwich, Norfolk. James is shown to be a 32 year old engine driver born in Norwich. His 32 year old wife Mary Ann was also born in Norwich. Their children include 9 year old James, 5 year old Lilly, and 1 year old John Houghton. All three children were born in Norwich. You hadn’t mentioned in your message to the Ancestry.com message boards that a John Houghton was the son of James and Mary Ann, and so I’m not sure if you knew of his existence

The census transcription below is from the Ancestry.com subscription website. Unless otherwise noted, all other census transcriptions you see in this reply will also be from Ancestry.com

The 1901 census transcription is below:.

1901 England Census

Civil parish: Norwich
Ecclesiastical parish: Thorpe St Matthew
Town: Thorpe
County/Island: Norfolk
Country: England

Street Address: Bishop Bridge Rd, 17 Weeds Square

Registration district: Norwich
Sub-registration district: East Wymer
ED, institution, or vessel: 39
Household schedule number: 65

Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 1839; Folio: 136; Page: 8.

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation,
Employer/Worker/Own Account, If Working at Home, Where Born

James Houghton, Head, Married, Male, 32, Engine Driver Railway, Worker, Norwich
Mary Ann Houghton, Wife, Married, Female, 32, Norwich
James W Houghton, Son, Male, 9, Norwich
Lilly Houghton, Daughter, Female, 5, Norwich
John Houghton, Son, Male, 1, Norwich
____

Living next door to James, Mary Ann, and their children, at 18 Weeds Square, is the family of Herbert H. Whitlam, 24, his wife, 24 year old Alice A., and their son Herbert H. Whitlam, who appears in the census to be age 7 months, though his exact age is difficult to read. The elder Herbert Whitlam is shown to be a coach driver born in Norwich. I believe he may be Mary Ann Houghton’s brother. Alice A. Whitlam is working as a boot machinist, and was also born in Norwich, as was their son Herbert.

The census transcription is below:

Street Address: Bishop Bridge Rd, 18 Weeds Sqaure

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation,
Employer/Worker/Own Account, If Working at Home, Where Born

Herbert H. Whitlam, Head, Married, Male, 24, Coach Driver, Worker, Norwich
Alice A. Whitlam, Wife, Married, Female, 24, Boot Machinist, Worker, Norwich
Herbert R. Whitlam, Son, Male, 7 Mo?, Norwich
____

At 19 Weeds Square is 24 year old car driver William Whitlam who may also have been Mary Ann Houghton’s brother. William’s place of birth is Norwich, as is the birthplace for his 21 year old wife Florence. The children in the household include 3 year old Florence, 2 year old William, and 1 year old Donald. The three children were born in Norwich:

Street Address: Bishop Bridge Rd, 19 Weeds Square

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation,
Employer/Worker/Own Account, If Working at Home, Where Born

William Whitlam, Head, married, Male, 24, Car Driver, Own Accounty, Norwich
Florence Whitlam, Wife, Married, Female, 21, Norwich
Florence Whitlam, Daughter, Female, 3, Norwich
William Whitlam, Son, Male, 2, Norwich
Donald Whitlam, Son, Male, 1, Norwich
____

Based on their names and ages in the 1901 census I believe I located what may be the General Register Office (GRO) birth indexes for the children of James and Mary Ann Houghton. However, because GRO birth indexes do not contain the names of the parents, I can’t be one-hundred percent sure these indexes are for James and Mary’s children.

GRO indexes can be accessed from the FreeBMD website at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

The first index below is for the birth of James William Houghton. The index shows his birth recorded in the Norwich Registration District for the June quarter of 1892. The June quarter includes the months of April, May, as well as June:

Births Jun 1892

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton James William Norwich 4b 107
____

The birth record for James William Houghton can be found in Volume 4b, Page 107 of copies of the GRO registers. You can order James’s birth record from the GRO website at: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

The least expensive method of ordering GRO certificates is to order them online, and by providing the Volume (4b), and Page Number (107), from the birth index you see above.

Before ordering certificates online, you will need to type in your email address and provide a password to log in to the site.

The GRO link to log onto the site can be found at: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

The cost of a certificate by ordering online is £7.00.

The birth certificate should provide you with the names of James’s parents, his date and place of birth, and the occupations of his parents. To see the range of information birth, marriage, and death records may contain, go to Barbara Dixon’s website at: http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm

Next are the GRO birth indexes for Lily Houghton and John Dundonald Houghton. Their birth were recorded in the Norwich district in 1895 and 1900 respectively:

Births Dec 1895

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton Lily Norwich 4b 124
____

Births Mar 1900

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton John Dundonald Norwich 4b 145
____

Not in the 1901 census are Percy and Ernest Houghton. The GRO indexes show they were born after 1901. I found GRO birth indexes for Percy William Houghton, whose birth was recorded in the Norwich district for the December quarter of 1903, and Ernest Reginald Houghton whose birth was recorded in the Norwich district for the June quarter of 1907.

The birth indexes follow, beginning with Percy William Houghton:

Births Dec 1903

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton Percy William Norwich 4b 111
____

Births Jun 1907

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

HOUGHTON Ernest Reginald Norwich 4b 124
____

I then located James and Mary A. Houghton in the 1891 census living in 3 Fountain Yard, parish of St. Augustine, Norwich. James is shown to be a 23 year old foundry stoker and his wife Mary, a 23 year old starch hand:

1891 England Census

Civil parish: St Augustine
Ecclesiastical parish: St Augustine
County/Island: Norfolk
Country: England

Street Address: 3 Fountain Yard

Registration district: Norwich
Sub-registration district: Coslany
ED, institution, or vessel: 10

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1519; Folio 13; Page 20; GSU roll: 6096629.

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation,
Employer/Employed/ Neither Employer nor Employed, Where Born

James Houghton, Head, Married, Male, 23, Foundry Stoker, Employed, Norwich Norfolk
Mary A Houghton, Wife, Married, Female, 23, Starch Hand, Employed, Norwich Norfolk
____

The following is the GRO marriage index for James Houghton and Mary Ann P Whitlam. GRO marriage indexes often include the names more than one couple. This is the case with the index in which James and Mary Ann can be found. Two other people, Albert Mann and Martha Catherine Wilde are also recorded in the index.

The marriage of James and Mary Ann was recorded in the Norwich district for the December quarter of 1890 and can be found in Volume 4b, Page 398 of the GRO registers:

Marriages Dec 1890

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton James Norwich 4b 398
Mann Albert Norwich 4b 398
Whitlam Mary Ann P Norwich 4b 398
Wilde Martha Catherine Norwich 4b 398
____

The marriage record for James and Mary Ann will provide information such as where they had been living at the time of their marriage, their occupations, as well as the names of their fathers, but not the names of their mothers. The marriage record should also include the occupations of their fathers.

I next wanted to see if I could locate James Houghton and Mary Ann Whitlam separately in the 1881 census to see if they were living with their parents and siblings. I began the search with the Houghton surname.

The 1881 census transcription below shows a 14 year old James Houghton living in the household of his parents, William and Maria, in Lower Westwick Street, Norwich. William is shown to be a 66 year old silk dyer. His place of birth is Norwich. James’s mother Maria is 54 years old and born in Woodbridge, with no county of birth mentioned. The children in the household include 21 year old David, a general laborer; 14 year old James, also a general laborer; and 12 year old Charles, who is listed as a scholar. Also in the household are William and Maria’s son-in-law John Wells, 25 years old, from Ipswich, Suffolk; 24 year old daughter Mary A. Wells, born Norwich; and granddaughter, 3 month old Maud Wells, born Norwich. The 1881 census transcription below is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website census search engine, which can be found at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...

1881 England Census

Household

Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Disability

William HOUGHTON Head M Male 66 Norwich Dyer (Silk)
Maria HOUGHTON Wife M Female 54 Woodbridge
David HOUGHTON Son U Male 21 Norwich General Laborer
James HOUGHTON Son Male 14 Norwich General Laborer
Charles HOUGHTON Son Male 12 Norwich Scholar
John WELLS Son In Law M Male 25 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Bricklayer
Mary A. I also looked for his christening transcription at a companion site called FreeREG, but didn’t find it there either. The FreeREG site can be found at: http://www.freereg.org.uk/

It’s possible the volunteers at FreeBMD and FreeREG haven’t as yet gotten around to transcribing his birth and christening. It’s also possible that David’s birth wasn’t recorded. However, I found what may be James Houghton’s GRO birth index. The index shows the birth recorded in the Norwich district for the December quarter of 1866. The birth record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 165 of the GRO registers:

Births Dec 1866

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton James Norwich 4b 165
____

I also located what I believe to be James’s baptism transcription at the FreeREG website. The index shows that James Houghton was baptized in St. Swithin’s Church of England, Norwich, on 13 October, 1867. His parents are listed as William and Maria Houghton. His father’s occupation is “Dyers Assistant.” The 1881 census above notes that William was a silk dyer. In the notes section of the transcription below is the entry, “Priv 14 M,” which means James may have been baptized privately at home, but then later baptized again in St. Swithin’s Church.

The index follows:

County Norfolk
Place Norwich
Church St Swithin
Register Number 224
Date Of Birth
Baptism Date 13 Oct 1867
Forename James
Sex -
Father Forename William
Mother Forename Maria
Father Surname HOUGHTON
Mother Surname
Abode St Swithin
Father Occupation Dyers Assist
Notes Priv 14 M
File Number 891
____

Below is the GRO birth index for a Charles Houghton. This probably refers to the son of William and Maria. The index shows Charles’s birth recorded in the Norwich district for the March quarter of 1869. His birth record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 171 of the GRO registers:

Births Mar 1869

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton Charles Norwich 4b 171
____

Next is Charles Houghton’s baptism transcription found at the FreeREG website. The baptism took place in St. Swithin’s Church of England, Norwich, on 22 February 1871. Charles’s parents are William and Maria Houghton. William’s occupation is “Dyers Assistant.”

County Norfolk
Place Norwich
Church St Swithin
Register Number 252
Date Of Birth
Baptism Date 22 Feb 1871
Forename Charles
Sex M
Father Forename William
Mother Forename Maria
Father Surname HOUGHTON
Mother Surname
Abode St Swithin
Father Occupation Dyers Assistant
Notes
File Number 891
____

The 1881 census notes that Mary A. Wells is the daughter of William Houghton. Mary is shown to be married to John Wells. Their daughter Maud is shown to be 3 months old in the census. With this information I next looked for the marriage of a Mary Houghton and John Wells in the GRO indexes. I found the index, which shows the marriage of Mary Ann Houghton and Jonathan Wells was recorded in the Norwich district for the September quarter of 1877. The marriage record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 241 of the GRO registers:

Marriages Sep 1877

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Houghton Mary Ann Norwich 4b 241
WELLS Jonathan Norwich 4b 241
____

I also located the marriage transcription for Jonathan Wells and Mary Ann Houghton at the FreeREG website. The marriage took place in St. Swithin’s Church of England on 20 August 1877. At the time of the marriage the index shows that Jonathan was living in Barrack Pockthorpe, and that Mary Ann was living in St. Swithin’s. Jonathan’s occupation at the time was bricklayer, which is the occupation for him as noted in the 1881 census. Jonathan’s father is Robert Wells, whose occupation isn’t fully given, but the word “Boot,” is part of his occupation. Mary Ann’s father is William Houghton, whose occupation is “Dyer.”

One of the witnesses to the wedding is listed as “Wcatherine” Dashwood. The “Wcatherine” may be a typographical error in the transcription. A second witness to the wedding is listed as William Jeremy:

County Norfolk
Place Norwich
Church St Swithin
Register Number 244
Marriage Date 20 Aug 1877
Groom Forename Jonathan
Groom Surname WELLS
Groom Age 23
Groom Parish
Groom Condition Bachelor
Groom Occupation Bricklayer
Groom Abode Barrack Pockthorpe
Bride Forename Mary Ann
Bride Surname HOUGHTON
Bride Age 22
Bride Parish
Bride Condition Spinster
Bride Occupation
Bride Abode St Swithin
Groom Father Forename Robert
Groom FatherSurname WELLS
Groom Father Occupation Boot *
Bride Father Forename William
Bride Father Surname HOUGHTON
Bride Father Occupation Dyer
Witness One Forename Wcatherine
Witness One Surname DASHWOOD
Witness Two Forename William
Witness Two Surname JERMY
Notes Registrar Certificate
FileNumber 890
____

Below is the GRO birth index for a Maud Wells. I believe this record pertains to the daughter of Jonathan Wells and Mary Ann Houghton. The index shows Maud’s birth recorded in the Norwich district in the March quarter of 1881. Maud’s birth record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 110 of the GRO registers:

Births Mar 1881

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

WELLS Maud Norwich 4b 110
____

Next is a combination birth and baptism transcription for Maud Wells. The index shows that Maud was born on 5 January 1881, and that her baptism took place in the St. James with Pockthorpe Church of England, Norwich, on 13 January 1885. Maud’s parents are listed as Jonathan and Mary Ann Wells. Their residence is listed as “Barrack St Otp,” which means Barrack St. James with Pockthorpe. The “Otp” acronym stands for “Of this parish.”

Maud’s baptism transcription follows:

County Norfolk
Place Norwich
Church St James with Pockthorpe
Register Number 550
Date Of Birth 05 Jan 1881
Baptism Date 13 Jan 1885
Forename Maud
Sex F
Father Forename Jonathan
Mother Forename Mary Ann
Father Surname WELLS
Mother Surname
Abode Barrack St Otp
Father Occupation Bricklayers Labourer
Notes
File Number 2828
____

The 1881 census gives Mary Ann Wells’s age as 24, placing her year of birth circa 1856-1857. The census also shows that she was born in Norwich, Norfolk. In the 1877 marriage transcription her age is 22, placing her year of birth 1854-1855.

I looked for a GRO index for a Mary Ann Houghton whose birth was recorded in the Norwich Registration District between 1853 and 1858, but didn’t find it. It’s possible her birth was recorded in another registration district, or perhaps not recorded at all.

Nor did I locate a baptism transcription for her at the FreeREG website. It’s possible her baptism has not been transcribed as yet.

Next, I located 5 year old James Houghton living in the household of his father William and mother Maria in an address of Westwick Street, 11 Barker’s Yard, Norwich. The oldest child in the household is 20 year old John Houghton, a coach trimmer born in Norfolk:

1871 England Census

Civil parish: Norwich
Ecclesiastical parish: St Swithin
Town: Norwich
County/Island: Norfolk
Country: England

Street Address: Lower Westwick St., 11 Barker's Yard

Registration district: Norwich
Sub-registration district: West Wymer
ED, institution, or vessel: 7
Household schedule number: 31

Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 1818; Folio: 102; Page: 6; GSU roll: 830839.

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation, Where Born

William Houghton, Head, Married, Male, 59, Dyer, Norfolk Norwich
Maria Houghton, Wife, Married, Female, 42, Suffolk Woodbridge
John Houghton, Son, Unmarried, Male, 20, Coach Trimmer, Norfolk Norwich
Mary A Houghton, Daughter, Unmarried, Female, 15, Week Girl, Norfolk Norwich
Henry Houghton, Son, Male, 14, Confectioner, Norfolk Norwich
David Houghton, Son, Male, 10, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
James Houghton, Son, Male, 5, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
Charles Houghton, Son, Male, 3, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
____

I’ll have more information about John “Houghton” a little bit later.

William and Maria Houghton were found in the 1861 census living in Westwick St., Browns Yard, Norwich. The oldest child in this enumeration is 14 year old William, working as a dyer, like his father. William was born in Norwich. The transcription below comes from the FreeCEN website at: http://www.freecen.org.uk/

1861 England Census

Piece: RG9/1218 Place: West Wymer -Norfolk Enumeration District: 7
Civil Parish: St Swithin Ecclesiastical Parish: St Swithin
Folio: 111 Page: 8 Schedule: 52
Address: Westwick St., Browns Yard

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks

HOUGHTON William Head M M 46 Dyer Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON Maria Wife M F 33 Norfolk - Norwich
Page: 112/9
HOUGHTON William Son U M 14 Dyer Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON John Son - M 10 Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON Robert Son - M 8 Scholar Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON Mary Ann Dau - F 6 Scholar Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON Henry Son - M 4 Scholar Norfolk - Norwich
HOUGHTON Maria Dau - F 1 Norfolk - Norwich
____

I didn’t find a GRO birth index for a William Houghton, born circa 1846-1847 in Norwich. Neither did I locate a baptism transcription for him. I’ll have more information about William later.

In the 1851 census 35 year old silk dyer William Houghton is shown to be married, but his wife is not in the household with him. However, there is a 23 year old lodger in the household named Maria Trott working as a silk winder. She is from Woodbridge, Suffolk. The 1871 and 1881 enumerations had shown that William’s wife Maria was from Woodbridge. This Maria would be William’s future wife. Further proof of this is can also be found in the 1851 census, as there are two children in the Houghton household with the middle name of “Trott.” These are 2 year old Rebecca Trott Houghton, and 6 month old John Trott Houghton. Rebecca Trott Houghton is not found in any of the census returns after 1851 living with William and Maria:

1851 England Census

Civil parish: Norwich St Swithin
County/Island: Norfolk
Country: England

Street Address: Brown's Yard, Lower Westwick

Registration district: Norwich
Sub-registration district: West Wymer
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Household schedule number: 27

Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1816; Folio: 164; Page: 6; GSU roll: 207469.

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation, Where Born

William Houghton, Head, Married, Male, 35, Silk Dyer, Norfolk Norwich
Johanna Houghton, Daughter, Unmarried, Female, 14, Servant, Norfolk Norwich
William Houghton, Son, Male, 3, Norfolk Norwich
Rebecca Trott Houghton, Daughter, Female, 2, Norfolk Norwich
John Trott Houghton, Son, Male, 6 Mo, Norfolk Norwich
Maria Trott, Lodger, Unmarried, Female, 23, Silk Winder, Suffolk Woodbridge
____

Below are the GRO birth indexes for William Houghton Trott, Rebecca Trott, and John Trott. All the births were recorded in the Nowrich district. You’ll notice that the person who transcribed the 1850 birth index for John Trott could not read the page number in Volume 13 of the GRO registers. where the birth record is found.:

Births Jun 1847

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Trott William Houghton Norwich 13 271
____

Births Mar 1849

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

TROTT Rebecca Norwich 13 295
____

Births Dec 1850

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Trott John Norwich 13 2[8_]2
____

Copies of the original GRO birth, marriage, and death indexes can be downloaded from either the FreeBMD website or from Ancestry.com. I accessed the birth index for John Trott, which is hand-written. The Page Number in Volume 13 where his birth record can be found is 282.

I also believe I learned why Rebecca Trott is not found in any census returns after 1851. Below is a GRO death index for a Rebecca Trott, showing her death was recorded in the Norwich district for the December quarter of 1851. Her death record can be found in Volume 13, Page 199 of the GRO registers:

Deaths Dec 1851

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Trott Rebecca Norwich 13 199
____

If you order Rebecca’s death record, see who is listed as the informant to the death, as the informant could be her father or mother.

In the 1851 census above, 14 year old Johanna Houghton, born in Norwich, is shown to be William’s daughter. She would be too old to have been the daughter of Maria Trott however. I didn’t locate a GRO birth index for Johanna. Her birth likely took place before civil registration began in July of 1837. However, I did find an LDS christening index for a Joanna Shaw Houghton, daughter of William and Joanna Houghton. The index shows the christening took place in Lakenham, St. John, Norfolk, on 17 April 1836. The index does not come with source information, and so I’m not sure how accurate it is:

Joanna Shaw Houghton
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 17 APR 1836 Lakenham, St John, , Norfolk, England

Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: William Houghton
Mother: Joanna

Source Information:
Batch No.: I025637
____

I next looked for William Houghton and his daughter Johanna in the 1841 census. The object of the search was to see if William’s wife had also been in the household with him. I didn’t find William Houghton or his daughter Johanna in the 1841 census, and so I looked for the marriage of William Houghton before the year 1836, which is the year the above index notes that Joanna Shaw Houghton was christened.

I located a marriage index for a William Houghton and Joanna Shaw Cornish at the LDS website. The index shows the marriage took place in St. John the Baptist Church, Lakenham, Norfolk, on 14 February 1836. The marriage took place just two months before the christening of Joanna Shaw Houghton:

WILLIAM HOUGHTON
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Marriages:
Spouse: JOANNA SHAW CORNISH
Marriage: 14 FEB 1836 Lakenham, Norfolk, England

Messages:
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.
The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the marriage date.

Source Information:
Batch No.: M163292
Dates: 1755 - 1901
Film Number: 1526494 IT 1-18 = Parish registers, 1568-1901 Church of England. St. John the Baptist was the parish church.
____

The marriage of William Houghton and Joanna Shaw Cornish can be found in LDS microfilm number 1526494, which you can order from the Family History Center.

I then wanted to see if I could find a GRO death index for a Joanna or Johanna Houghton. I found one index showing that a Joanna Houghton’s death was recorded in the Norwich district for the September quarter of 1844. The death can be found in Volume 13, Page 189 of the GRO registers. If you order the death record, see if a William Houghton is listed as the informant:

Deaths Sep 1844

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

HOUGHTON Joanna Norwich 13 189
____

I next wanted to see when William Houghton and Maria Trott were married. I found what I believe is their GRO marriage index. The index includes four people. These are Mary Ann Bullock, Ward Haines, William Houghton, and Maria Trott. The marriage was recorded in the Norwich district for the December quarter of 1858. The marriage record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 421 of the GRO registers.

Marriages Dec 1858

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Bullock Mary Ann Norwich 4b 421
HAINES Ward Norwich 4b 421
Houghton William Norwich 4b 421
Trott Maria Norwich 4b 421
____

If you order the marriage record from the GRO see who are listed as the fathers of William and Maria.

I next looked for William Houghton’s christening at the LDS and FreeREG websites, but didn’t find it, nor did I locate the christenings of Maria Trott or Joanna Shaw Cornish.

THE WHITLAM FAMILY

We last saw 23 year old Mary A Whitlam Houghton in the 1891 census with her 23 year old husband James living in 3 Fountain Yard, St. Augustine, Norfolk. I now wanted to see if I could find Mary Ann Whitlam in the 1881 census to see if she had been living with her parents.

I located 17 year old Mary A. P. Whitlam in the household of her father and mother in an address of No. 3 York Buildings, Thorpe Next Norwich, Norfolk. Her father is a 48 year old whitesmith named Robert Whitlam, born Norwich. Her mother is 40 year old Ellen Whitlam, born Liverpool. The other children in the household include 14 year old Sarah; 9 year old Herbert; 7 year old Rose; and 4 year old William. All the children were born in Norwich.

A “whitesmith” was a man who worked with light metals such as tin.

The transcription below is from the LDS website:

1881 England Census

Household:

Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Disability

Robert WHITLAM Head M Male 48 Norwich Whitesmith
Ellen WHITLAM Wife M Female 40 Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Mary A. The index shows Mary Ann’s birth recorded in the Norwich district for the June quarter of 1864. Her birth record can be found in Volume 4b, Page 111 of the GRO registers. Her birth record should provide you with the names of her parents:

Births Jun 1864

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

WHITLAW Mary Ann Phillis Norwich 4b 111
____

Following is the baptism transcription for Marianne Phillis Whitlam. The baptism took place in St. Matthews Church of England, Thorpe Hamlet, Norfolk, on 8 January 1865. Marianne’s parents are Robert and Ellen Whitlam. Robert’s occupation is shown to be “whitesmith,” as it is in the 1881 census:

County Norfolk
Place Thorpe Hamlet
Church St Matthew
Register Number 876
Date Of Birth
Baptism Date 08 Jan 1865
Forename Marianne Phillis
Sex -
Father Forename Robert
Mother Forename Ellen
Father Surname WHITLAM
Mother Surname
Abode
Father Occupation Whitesmith
Notes
File Number 6544
____

Next is the combination birth and baptism transcription for Sarah Gall Whitlam. Her birth took place on 14 July 1867. Her baptism was performed in St. Matthew’s Church of England, Thorpe Hamlet, Norfolk, on 4 September 1867. Her parents are Robert and Ellen Whitlam. Her father’s occupation is “whitesmith.”:

County Norfolk
Place Thorpe Hamlet
Church St Matthew
Register Number 1092
Date Of Birth 14 Jul 1867
Baptism Date 04 Sep 1867
Forename Sarah Gall
Sex -
Father Forename Robert
Mother Forename Ellen
Father Surname WHITLAM
Mother Surname
Abode
Father Occupation Whitesmith
Notes
File Number 6544
____

I didn’t find an 1867 GRO birth index for Sarah Gall Whitlam, but did locate a birth index for a Sarah Whitlam registered in the Norwich district for the September quarter of 1866. It’s possible the FreeReg transcription has the incorrect year of birth for Sarah:

Births Sep 1866

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Whitlam Sarah Norwich 4b 105
____

Below is the 1871 birth and baptism transcription for Herbert Henry Whitlam:

County Norfolk
Place Thorpe Hamlet
Church St Matthew
Register Number 1362
Date Of Birth 12 Sep 1871
Baptism Date 04 Oct 1871
Forename Herbert Henry
Sex -
Father Forename Robert
Mother Forename Ellen
Father Surname WHITLAM
Mother Surname
Abode
Father Occupation Smith
Notes
File Number 6544
____

The GRO birth index below gives his name as Henry Herbert Whitlam:

Births Dec 1871

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Whitlam Henry Herbert Norwich 4b 117
____

Next is the FreeREG birth and baptism transcription for “Rosa” Whitlam. This is followed by a GRO birth index for a William Whitlam recorded in the Norwich district for the June quarter of 1877, which may refer to the child of William and Ellen Whitlam:

County Norfolk
Place Thorpe Hamlet
Church St Matthew
Register Number 1888
Date Of Birth 22 Feb 1877
Baptism Date 11 Feb 1880
Forename William
Sex -
Father Forename Robert
Mother Forename Ellen
Father Surname WHITLAM
Mother Surname
Abode
Father Occupation Smith
Notes
File Number 6544
____

Births Sep 1874

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

WHITLAM Rosa Norwich 4b 110
____

Next I located 7 year old Mary Ann Phillis Whitlam in the household of her parents Robert and Ellen in an address of Weed’s Square, Norwich. The oldest child in the household 14 year old Ellen Jane Whitlam, followed by 11 year old Robert James and 10 year old John Gall Whitlam, all born Norwich. These three children are not found in the 1871 census above. The younger siblings, aside from Mary Ann Phillis, include 4 year old Sarah and 2 year old James Whitlam. Sarah is in the 1881 census, but James is not.

The 1871 census transcription below is from the Origins.net subscription website:

1871 England Census

Reference details

Census 1871
TNA Ref RG10-1811
Image No 171
Folio No 85
Page No 56
Entry No 22

Location details

County Norfolk
Superintendent Registrar's District NORWICH
Registrar's Sub-District WYMER, EAST
Enumeration District No 18
Civil Parish ST MATTHEW
City or Municipal Borough NORWICH
Municipal Ward 7
Parliamentary Borough NORWICH
Town
Village or Hamlet THORPE
Local Board NORWICH
Ecclesiastical District ST MATTHEW
Schedule No 340
Street WEED'S SQUARE

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation, Where Born

Robert Whitlam, Head, Married, Male, 37, Whitesmith, Norfolk Norwich
Ellen Whitlam, Wife, Married, Female, 31, Norfolk Norwich
Ellen Jane Whitlam Daughter, Female, 14, Silk Worker, Norfolk Norwich
Robert James Whitlam, Son, Male, 11, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
John Gall Whitlam, Son, Male, 10, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
Mary Ann Phillis Whitlam, Daughter, Female, 7, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
Sarah Whitlam, Daughter, Female, 4, Scholar, Norfolk Norwich
James Walter Whitlam, Son, Male, 2, Norfolk Norwich
____

Below are the FreeREG transcriptions for Ellen Jane, Robert James, John Gall, and James Walter Whitlam. I didn’t locate either Robert or Ellen in the 1851 census.

But I did find a 9 year old Robert “Witlam” in the household of his parents John and Sarah in the 1841 census living in “Weeds’s” Buildings, Norwich. This may be a reference to the future father Mary Ann Phillis Whitlam Houghton.

John Witlam is shown to be a 45 year old tailor born in Norfolk. His 45 year old wife Sarah was also born in Norfolk as were the other children in the household, including 16 year old William, followed by 11 year old John, 9 year old Robert, and 6 year old Lydia. The 1841 census transcription below is from the Origins.net website:

1841 England Census

Reference details

TNA Ref HO107-0791
Image No 211
Folio No 7
Page No 7
Entry No 15

Location details

County NORFOLK
Superintendent Registrar's District NORWICH
Registrar's District EAST WYMER
Enumeration District No 10
Parish THORPE ST ANDREW
City NORWICH
Township
Place WEEDS'S BUILDINGS
Household Number 1591

Name, Age, Sex, Occupation, Whether Born in Same County

John Witlam, 45, Male, Tailor, Yes
Sarah Witlam, 45, Female, Yes
William Witlam, 16, Male, Yes
John Witlam, 11, Male, Yes
Robert Witlam, 9, Male, Yes
Lydia Witlam, 6, Female, yes
____

I didn’t find an Ellen Cates in the 1841 census.

I located a combination birth and christening index for a Robert “Witlam” at the LDS website. This may refer to your Robert Witlam. The index shows Robert was born on 6 May 1833 and christened in the Saint Martin at Palace Church of England, Norwich, on 19 May 1833. His parents are John and Sarah Witlam. The index comes with LDS microfilm and microfiche source information:

ROB WITLAM
Male

Event(s):
Birth: 06 MAY 1833

Christening: 19 MAY 1833 Saint Martin At Palace, Norwich, Norfolk, England

Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JN. You may also find more information about your ancestors at these websites than I did.

Best of luck with your research,

Dave Boylan
As part of my wife's genealogy, I have gotten this far back with fairly good proof, and most likely am certain about going back further. Here is what I know of her line:

Curtis E. Houghton, born Vermont, 1802 - 1889 m. Susanna R. Beckwith 1813-1890, and had the following issue:

John Curtis Houghton 1833-1837
Elbridge F. Houghton, 1834-1891
Susannah Houghton, 1841 - 1880
William Wallace Houghton, 1849 - 1930
Warren T. Houghton, 1851-1887

Her line continues through William Wallace Houghton:

William Wallace Houghton m. 1849-1930 who married first Lois Rebecca Kingsbury (1851-1916) and had the following children:

Clarence W. Houghton (1875 - )
Rosie Estella Houghton (1882 - )
Leroy K. Houghton (1888- 1980)

William Wallace Houghton then married 2nd wife Ada Estella Kingsbury (1848-1873) when her sister (first wife) died.

Their only child was Oscar Wallace Houghton (1872 - 1934).

Line continues to Leroy Kingsbury Houghton, Jr. (1888-1980) who married Ethelyn S. Williams(1894-1990) and had one child, Leroy Kingsbury, Jr. (1916-1989).

Leroy Kingsbury Houghton, Jr. m. Nancy Wentworth (1921 - present) and had
the following children:

Beth Houghton
Judith Houghton
Norman W. Houghton
Warren Houghton
Leroy Kingsbury Houghton III

Then Norman W. Houghton m. Joan Irene Fraitag (1948 - present) on 2 Aug 1969 and had 3 children:

Kimberly Jean Houghton (1971 - Present) m. John V. Berry (1971 - Present) in Maryland in 2000.

Kelly Beth Houghton (1973 - Present)

William Kingsbury Houghton (1976-Present).

That is it so far. Best of luck..

John

Thank you for your posting, that I just came across, in 2009!

I have John Fulcher being born on Feb. 1, 1789 in England, and dying on Aug 3, 1854, still in England. He married a French Huguenot woman, Ann Dezarr/Dezart/DeZaar, born 11/10/1789, died 9/18/1863; she's apparently buried in the Fulcher plot #30308, Section 196, Greenwood cemetary in Brooklyn, NY.
Their daughter Mary Ann Fulcher was born 2/12/1825 in the parish of Bethnal Green, Middlesex, London, England. She was naturalized March 18, 1879, in Brooklyn, NY, and died 12/16/1889.
Mary Ann married Alfred Houghton on May 8, 1852, at the Sand Street Methodist Church, 19 High St., Brooklyn, NY. J.B. Wood, pastor.

So, thank you for your information that helps me fill in a few gaps!

I am researching Thomas Houghton of Hopewell New Jersey, 1700-1760. According to ancestry.com records, he was married to Mary or Maria Mershon, whose mother was Ann Houghton (1680-1738). But Ann was Thomas's sister, which would mean he married his niece. I hope not. I would like to correct the family tree, if possible, or else learn more about this interesting story.

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 28 April 1893 ...

Judge B. R. Houghton

The death of Judge B. R. Houghton at Sherman, spoken of in the last Intelligencer, removed from the state an old Texas. He was born in Kentucky in 1815 and came to the state about 1837 from New Orleans, and he and his partner erected the first custom house building in Galveston. Several years afterward he located in Fannin County and there married, and after the death of his wife he moved to Farmersville, Collin County, where he was for many years the leading merchant, and he subsequently carried on the mercantile business at Terrell. At Farmersville he married a daughter of Col. Reid, and his widow and her two children remain at home in Sherman, to which place he moved about three years since. He was interested in street railways in New Orleans, bank stock in Texas, etc. In his dealing honorable and upright with a pure character and highly esteemed by all who knew him, he will be greatly mourned by a large circle of acquaintances and friends.
Death of Judge

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 7 Arpil 1893 ...

Judge Houghton Dead

Mr. S. A. Shortridge on Wednesday received word from Sherman that Judge Houghton, whose serious illness we noted two weeks ago was worse and that he could scarcely survive through the night. Mr. Shortridge left for Sherman Wednesday evening.

Later - Judge Houghton died at six o'clock Wednesday evening. The end came painlessly and the good man passed over the river as peacefully as one falling to sleep, surrounded by his family and immediate neighbors. Mr. Shortridge arrived too late to see his aged friend alive.

Judge Houghton was a resident of Terrell for more than a dozen years being for a great portion of that time engaged in the hardware business. He was well known not only to the people of Kaufman County, but to the people of adjacent counties as well, and by them all was held in high esteem for his stanch integrity, sound business sense, and brusque and sturdy character. He was a splendid financier, always managing his vast property interests personally and in such a manner as to bring him liberal returns. Although having removed from Terrell several years ago he was still interested in a business way in the city, being a stockholder in the First National Bank.
