Hello Claire, Let me explain. My name is Larry Dubois and I live in Lawrence. I am helping a cousin with genealogy on his mothers side. Marie Louise Dube married Joseph Houle. Her second marriage was to Joseph Catineau. A child of this union was Yvonne Catineau whom married Arthur Dubois. They are my cousins parents. So I am trying to put it all together. Sorry I didnt look here before now but I have been rather busy.
Larry

Claire & Raymond,

I have a bit of information on Antoine Cadiely/Gadelie/Godillei/Gadley, with sources, which I'm happy to share with you so you can check them out to your own satisfaction. His son, Joseph, & Ursula seem to be our common ancestral link.

I'm assuming your post, Raymond, relates to Claire's & my information exchange, since this exchange has been the only one posted since 2004.

My mother was Ann Houle, daughter of Felix Houle, grand daughter of Joseph Houle & Ursula Gadelie, G Grand daughter of Joseph Houle & Radegonde Gagnon, GG Grandaughter of Augustin Houle and Marguerite Racine, GGG Grandaughter of Joseph Houle & Marie Joseph Pontbriand/Brillant, etc. all the way back to Louis Houde and Marie Madeleine Boucher. I also have the maternal lineage in most cases back to France.

Send me a note at pdupuy@drizzle.com and we can exchange whatever information you'd like privately. Your note to me will have your direct email address on it, Claire, and Raymond's is included in his posting.

Paul
I'm apparently two generations older than you are. I have your Grandparents in my program, and George Houle is my 1C1R (first cousin once removed up one generation, but that's as far as I had researched. Not knowing the names of your parents I plugged in two generations of descendant unnamed children and did a re-calculation of relationships, and you and I are 2C2R* (2nd cousins twice removed younger generation). So, yes, we are related. Joseph Houle and Ursula Gadelie were my Great Grandparents. My Grandparents were Felix Houle and Marie Girard.

I am curious if you have any information on Antoine Cadiely (Ursula's father) who is your 4G Grandfather, and my 2G Grandfather. Besides the information that he was a member of the Meuron Regiment (a Swiss mercenary regiment used by the British in the war of 1812), I haven't found any point of origination in Germany or Switzerland that I can trace him to, nor any parents for him.

Are you near Drummondville where Antoine and Ursula were married in 1821?

My great-grandfather Francis X. Houle came from L Canada with his wife Sophie (Sofie on Ca census record). It is believed Sophie's maiden name was either Pepin or Massicotte. My grandmother Alvine Houle Clement was F.X. and Sophie's daughter. I have found on Ca census records both a Sophie Pepin and a Sophie Massicotte born in 1844 in Quebec, Canada.
They lived in Ishpeming and Ironwood, Michigan USA.
A Caroline Massicotte newspaper obit listed Alvine as a niece.
Anyone with clues or history, kindly contact me.
Hi Ginny,
Yes, you are correct on the David and John Houle. After carefully reviewing my info Ellen Laura Houle had the 2 brothers you are looking for:

David born April 10, 1829, died 8-18-1928 in Sturgeon Bay. He married Jane Stephenson in abt 1858.

John born between Aug 1, 1841 and June 21, 1842, died 2-21-1911 in Sturgeon Bay. He married Ida Seymour on 2-10-1859 in DePere.

They were the sons of Captain Joseph Clair Houde/Houle born Quebec and Josephte Carbonneau dit Provencal born Green Bay. Maybe Elizabeth was a middle name?????

Are you looking for living descendents of these 2 men? Do you think any of these photos have Captain Joseph and Josephte in them?

Regards,
Dale

Wow, that's a lot of information! Thanks!

I guessed his name would probably really be Luc, but...Ludger?

What's the Blue Drouin?

Is Choret ("ct notary Choret") a place name or the name of the notary?

Are there any...reasons (or dates)...for the name changes? (Elie, Helie, Hely, Frichet, Frechet, Houle, Houde)

Intriguing and confusing, all at once.

Thanks again for all the info.

T. Houle

PS -- The 1900 census indicated that they had 6 of 9 children who survived. Mary, Annie, and Emile transfer over to the US, plus William who was born in Massachusetts. I guess Henri stayed in Canada, maybe, and 'Harvey' became 'Alvin.' (As Alvin F. is older than Emile and younger than Annie and shows up on all the other censuses.)

Well, something to look into.

Luke Houle + Agnes Elie from somewhere in French Canada

Hi, I have really limited information that falls before Ancestry's border crossings and after the umontreal site info. I could really use some assistance.

All I know is that Luke and Agnes Houle arrived in the US from French Canada with four kids circa 1880 (but they are not on that census). A fifth child was born in Massachusetts in 1889.

In 1900 they were in Dracut, Massachusetts. By 1910 they were in Washington, where the family remained for decades.

Luke's death certificate says his parents are Michel Houle and Louise Bergeron.

Agnes' death certificate says her parents are Ephren Elie and Hurbest Hebert [sic].

This is all I know. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Dale,

My Gabriel Houle's parents were Gabriel Houle and Genevieve Castel; he was born 6 February 1820 in Nicolet, Nicolet, Quebec, Canada. Emily Cote's parents were Augustin Cote and Adelaide Couturier dit Verville. Gabriel and Emily were married 4 August 1845 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Green Bay, Brown County, WI. They had 12 children; my gr gr grandmother Angeline was their 5th child. Sometime between 1865 and 1970, the family moved to Shawano, Shawano Co, WI. Then around 1880 the family moved to Stephenson, Menominee Co., MI. Gabriel died 8 June 1886 in Stephenson Twp, and is buried in the Stephenson Cemetery, the old part. Emily died 19 March 1914, in Stephenson, and is buried next to Gabriel. If you would like more information, just let me know. Nice to meet another cousin, also.....Julie

They moved to Blenheim, Ontario where they had their first child Isaac Alexander BROWN in 1869. They then moved to Neligh, Nebraska where they had Lizzie 1872, Edward W. 1879, and Thomas J. 1886. They then moved to Carbon, Montana. Obeline Ellen died there 19 Nov 1906.

I discovered a website on the Houle family that might be useful to all researching the Houles: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/a/m/Stephanie-S... . This page has JOSEPH HOULE who married JOSEPHINE "JOSETTE" CARBONNEAU DIT PROVENÇAL July 06, 1812 in Nicolet, Quebec, Canada and many pages of that family (both ancestors and descendants). I believe the information on the site was compiled by a descendant of Jean/John Houle (son of Joseph and Josephine above).

Ginny Haen

I have just a little bit ... but every little bit helps in putting the puzzle together. Here's all I have

ETIENNE HOULE, son of Louis Houde and Madeleine Boucher, was born 04 Apr 1682 and baptized the next day in Ste. Famille, QC. He died 27 Aug. 1750 and was buried on 27 Aug 8 at St.-Louis de Lotbinière, QC.
He married Elisabeth-Ursule de Nevers (Boisvert), daughter of Etienne de Nevers (Boisvert) and Marie-Jeanne Lemay, on 16 April 1708, at Sainte-Croix- de-Lotbinière [source: Manousien, vol. 9, no. 2, p. 5 - mag. of HOULE assoc].

Their children
(1)	Joseph Houde/Houle
(2)	Etienne Houde, married to Marie-Josephte Piché, daughter of Pierre Piché and Marie-Anne Sylvestre on 26 Nov. 1731 at Sainte- Croix. [Manousien, vol. 9, no. 2 p. 5]
(3)	Louis-Michel Houde/Houle, married Marie Geneviève Lemay, daughter of Michel Lemay and Geneviève Marcot, on April 7, 1739 at Bécancour, QC. They had at least one son, Joseph, who married Elisabeth Leroux on April 22, 1781, at Les Cèdres, QC. [Manousien, vol 10 no. 3, p. 5]
(4)	Antoine Houde/Houle, married Charlotte Leblanc-Labrie on Feb. 11, 1743 at Becancour, QC (Mes Aieux, family #597176)
(5)	Angélique Houde/Houle, married Antoine Provencher-Ducharme, on Sept. 06, 1745 at Becancour, QC (Mes Aieux, family #597176)
(6)	Marie Ursule Houde/Houle, baptized 5 Sep 1728 at St.-Louis, Lotbinière, QC. She married Louis Champou.

There is an association for the descendants of Louis Houle at http://www.famillelouishoude.com/english/
The Manousien referred to above is the offical magazine of the association.

Laura HOULE & Willie BENOIT family

WHAT I KNOW for the WILLIE BENOIT-LAURA HOULE family
------------------------------------------
Laura HOULE, born 20 Mary 1887 in Nicolet, QC, daughter of Amedee Houle and RoseAnna Doucet, (baptized Marie Emma Laura Houle) was my grandfather’s younger sister, and has been a mystery in more than 12 years of researching. Some info has been found through letter-writing, but what I have is very limited. She had a serious drinking problem and the family apparently cut off contact with her, so that my mother and my uncle had only vague memories of them, even if they lived only blocks away.
(1) Laura married Willie BENOIT on 28 May 1906 in Ludlow MA where both worked in mills. (full name, Joseph William Benoit)
(2) Census reveals that in 1910, they lived in Springfield, MA and had one son, Freddie. Census of 1920 shows them living in Lawrence, MA. They’ve added 4 children, 2 born in Canada. I have baptismal/birth records for the 2 born in Canada (Irene, Edward), but not those born in US (Rita, Edna). The 1930 Census of Pontiac MI shows another daughter (Gladys), born around 1922 or 1923 (she’s 7 at the census), living with a bachelor uncle, her mother’s brother Emile.
--------------------------------------------------
WHAT I NEED:
(1) Gladys BENOIT, the youngest child. Looking for her BIRTH, most likely in Lawrence,MA and/or baptism (Ste Anne’s in Lawrence, I would guess). My mother (deceased) recalled vaguely that she was 4 or 5 years younger than her, putting her birth year at 1922 or 1923. Also, 1930 census gives her age as 7.
(2) Births of two siblings, Rita BENOIT (age 3 11/12 at 1920 census, so born around 1916), and Edna (age 9 mos at 1920 census, birth in 1919).
(3) DEATH of the mother, my aunt Laura HOULE. One e-mail correspondent thought she had seen that name at Sacred Heart Cemetery in No. Andover, MA. Since Gladys was living with her godfather, Laura’s death would be between 1923 and 1930. Would love to find an obit, but need date of death first.
(4) Where was Willie BENOIT in the 1930 census? And the other children? My mother recalled that her cousin Freddie had run away with the circus. He would have been 21 by then, so it's quite possible! Would he show up in census data elsewhere?
(5) In the 1920 census, Laura is a naturalized citizen. She was not in the 1910 census. Any chance I can find that record somehow?

Thanks for whatever help you can give
Sister Therese Gregoire
Lacombe, Louisiana
The Curbelo name changed due to the fact that the family was hiding or trying to blend in with the French in Louisiana. They family started to change the spelling to sound more French so as to blend in better.
