Many thanks. I wonder if it is your daughter that is coming up as a DNA match to my wife's father Cornelius O'Sullivan?

She knows she is somehow related to the Keohanes in Clooncugger. Her family were living there from around 1833 until the 1860's and there are Keohane sponsors on the baptisms. One side of that family are Sullivan Prettie and the other is Harrington Caska

This project has now launched!

People named Hourihan(e) are cordially invited to join the O'Hourihane DNA projects. This will be my only announcement on this board.

Hourihane has historically been associated with Cork in Ireland, however there are possibilities that some could have actually been O'Brien, or that they could have been Horan, Horgan, Horrigan, or Hanrahan.

The project home is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~skibbgirl/...
Shortcut: http://tinyurl.com/HourihaneDNAProject

I am looking for people of Irish descent named some variation of Horan, Horgan, Horrigan, Hanrahan, Hourihan, and even Howard to join the project. Due to a number of factors, there is a possibility that these surnames have historically been confused with each other.

The project is looking for Y-DNA test participants and also autosomal DNA test participants. The project contains a background; goals; a surname distribution map and other items of interest.

Hourihane Y-DNA and A-DNA projects

I just submitted a request to FTDNA for a Hourihane DNA project.

The project would be focused geographically on Co Cork and Munster, Ireland, and on names such as Hourihane, Hourican, Horrigan, Horgan, Horan, and the Americanized Irish Howard. Men with these surnames are invited to take a Y-DNA test, and anybody with these names anywhere in their direct ancestry can take the A-DNA (Family Finder) test.

Once the project is OK'd there will be more details on the project page. http://www.ftdna.com

I am sorry to say the specific names do not ring a bell or ring too many bells since those are names common to the area of Caheragh. I will keep them in mind. Assuming you know the time periods, have you tried the 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland (which may be too recent) or the civil birth and marriage records now on Ancestry? JK

Hi
Just seen your post. My ggf was Thomas Hourihan married to Frances Mary Lynch Droumgarriff, Glengarriff, Co.Cork. He was a labourer. They had several children, Mary (Molly)b.1878,Julia b.1880 Patrick, Lizzie b.1887, Frances 1889, Thomas b.1893 Michael b,1894. Thomas Hourihan died sometime before 1901 census. A couple of the sisters stayed in Glengarriff and remained unmarried. One of the sisters is my ggrandmother, she died young and her sisters reared her two sons. Love to hear from you.

Hi Marion
Thanks for your post, unfortunately not the same Julia I have since found that that Julia was born in Shoreditch in 1878 but her mother died in 1881 and her father sent her to live with relatives, she appears in 1891 census in London age 14 living with patneral grandfather and aunt. My late father was told by his mother that she came to London aged 21 from Glengarriff so maybe she was sent to live with relatives there. Her father was John Hourihan c1848-1911 Bricklayer/Labourer and his father was Timothy c1813 or later and he was a farm labourer. I do not know of any siblings for John or who his mother was.
On the 1901 Census of Ireland, My GGrandfather, Timothy Hourihane (Tim the Tailor) is shown in Bredagh, Tooreen, Ireland with wife Hannah (nee O'Donoghue), daughter Mary - 4 years old (my grandmother Molly Hourihan Guinane), sons John (2 - died in Irish Civil War) and Jeremiah (10 months), and mother Anne (nee Kelly), widow.
There is also a Timothy Hourihan aged 12 listed as a nephew and born in the USA. I have Tim the tailor's brothers as Patrick, John, and Jeremiah. Who would this nephew be the son of and why was he in Ireland at the age of 12? Any info would be appreciated.

I have a Catherine Hourihan who arrived in Pt Adelaide, South Australia on the 6 Jun 1882 aboard the CLYDE. There do not appear to be any other HOURIHAN'S aboard; she would have been 18 years old, as she was born in Caheragh, Skibberdeen 7 Feb 1864, daughter of Timothy Hourihan (born about 1838) and Elizabeth Attridge. There was one other known child - a son Timothy born 16 May 1868, but I do not know what became of him or if there were other siblings.
Does anyone have this branch in their tree? It seems we must all be related.
It would appear that your gggfather John would be the brother of my ggmother Mary who married Nicholas Keohane referenced in my earlier post. That would indicate that I am a generation older than you.
There may be three properties in Bauravilla involved, one of which was jointly held by a J. Hourihan in 1828, in 1832 it is listed jointly by Peter, Julia and Cornelius Hourihan; 1850s Peter; 1889 Anne Hourahan; 1928 Richard Forbes; 1930 Cornelius Cadogan. The second property may be a subdivision of the first and in 1880 is listed to Julia Hourihan; 1901 John Hourihan, this may be what shows in the census, 1910 Anne Hourihan, then Forbes-Cadogan. There is also the National School of which a Peter Hourihan was the lessor until Jeremiah McCarthy took over about 1871. McCarthys were teachers in Caheragh as I thin were Hourihans.

Hi I'm also descended from the Bauravilla Hourihans. My ggggfather was John Hourihane from Bauravilla married to Mary Hourihane. Their son John my gggfather had a farm in Inchinagotagh, a neighbouring townland and later moved to Poundlick, just outside Skibbereen. Another son Cornelius is listed in the 1901 census as a farmer in Bauravilla so I'm guessing he inherited the family farm. I suspect we're all connected somehow but not sure exactly.
Conor

Since posting I have found my grandmother was actually born in London but there is definitely a link to Glengarriff which I have yet to prove.
Regards

Teresa

My family comes from Caheragh. I am interested in your post because of my connection. My line goes through Caheragh, my GGGfather was Patrick Hourihane from Caheragh, he was married to Nellie Collins from Killingleigh. Their children included (not complete list) Margeret, 08/01/1948;Mary, Aug 6, 1851; james, May 13, 1855; John April 27, 1857 (My GGF); Neil, AUg 4, 1862, Patrick Feb 25, 1865 and Cornelius, Nov 1, 1867.

Our two lines may be linked based on names you are looking for, they seem to recur each generation. If that is the case, we are looking for same family that produced Patrick and Mary, they could be siblings born around 1820's. Let me know if I helped.

Hello, I am looking for my great, greatgrandparents family who came from Ireland maybe Limerick around 1850/60. There names are Daniel (d.o.b aprrox 1835) and Julia (d.o.b approx 1836) Hourihan and they settled in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Daniel worked in the steel works. He and Julia possibly had seven children who are welsh by birth. I hope someone out there can help me put my Irish family on my family tree. All the dates could be wrong by about 5 years as the census dates could be incorrect. Thank you for taken the time to read this.

Some of my Hourihan(e) ancestors from Tooreen, Caheragh, County Cork, Ireland, emigrated to the US and lived in the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara area. I have been able to track down three brothers of the four brothers - Lawrence (Laurence) Hourihan, b. about 1861, who married Mary Donovan. He was in Santa Barbara, Township 4 in the 1900 census, San Luis Obispo Huasna Precinct in the 1910 census, Branch Precinct in the 1920 census and Branch Precinct - Arroyo Grande Township in the 1930 census. His brother Michael, b. 1869/1870, married Margaret Hill. He was in Santa Barbara, Township 4 in the 1900 and 1910 census, Santa Barbara Santa Ynez Precinct in the 1920 and 1930 census. A third brother, Patrick Emmett Hourihan, married Lilly Ontiveros. The fourth brother, Thomas, (may have been in Alhambra, Contra Costa, in the 1900 census) apparently went to the San Diego area and I believe he returned to Ireland. Do you think there is any connection between your Lawrence Hourihan and this family?

I'm researching my mother's Irish roots. John and Alice or Ellen HOURIHANE left Cork by 1851 with children Patrick, Mary, Ann, Rose, John, Michael and Margaret all born in Ireland between 1834 and 1848. The girls all married in Wigan and became Mary Kennedy, Ann Glennon, Rose Green and Margaret Farrimond. The youngest, Margaret was my gr gr grandmother. I've searched half of the west cork Catholic parishes and had no luck. Has anyone else come accross this family.

By 1871 they have changed the family name to HORAN which was a common name from Mayo in the Lancashire coalfields at this time.

Trying to figure out the connection between the RI Hourihans and the O'Donovan/O'Sullivans who lived in Skibbereen, Co. Cork and emigrated to Providence, RI early 1900's. There were Hourihan and McCarthy cousins in Providence.

Jeremiah O'Donovan and Katherine Farr had at least two daughters, Annie c.1859, married John O'Sullivan Bear (d.1897),they lived in Skibbereen and had 5 children. Nellie (Ellen) b.c. 1864, never married.

Hannah Hourihan arrived in Boston in 1902 with cousin Katherine O'Sullivan. Both listed their local sponsor as their Aunt, Nellie Donovan.

One of O'Sullivan girls may have married an O'Brien in Skibbereen

Hanna Hourihan married John J. Healy in Providence, RI in 1908.

Mary Ellen Hourihan married Thomas Heffernan in Providence on April 24,1918.

John J. Hourihane died in WW1. There was a memorial mass for him in Providence on Dec. 2, 1918. Attendees included, the O'Sullivans, Agnes O'Brien Harvey, M. Buckley, Del. Moore and Mary O'Brien Mansfield (Mary was also an O'Sullivan cousin. She lived in Dorchester, MA and visited Drimoleague in 1906).

Were Hannah, Mary Ellen and John J. Hourihan siblings?
Was their mother another sister to Nellie O'Donovan and Annie O'Donovan O'Sullivan?

How are they all connected to the O'Briens and the McCarthy's.

Can anyone make a connection?

The 1900 census places them in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo, California. They had 2 children, Helen and Katie (murdered in 1906 at age 16). Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hinchion ancestry

James Hinchion, my great, great grandfather came from Co. Cork around 1849. His daughter, Ann married Dan Sullivan in 1856 in Watertown. James, with his sons went out to Wauchon, Iowa and produced a number of Hinchion families out there. I have a more detailed family history of the descendants of this James Hinchion.
Julia Hourihan c1880-c1942 Bantry-London

I am trying to find out any information about my grandmother Julia Hourihan she lived in London, Shoreditch but was born? in Glengarriff Bantry. I do not know her parent/siblings names but she was from a large family. I have found a possible family on Wales census 1871,1891 with a Julia of the correct age and wish to eliminate (or not) this family living in Merthyr Tydfil. One of her sisters married a Riordan (not sure which way they spelt it as there are several spelling variations). Some of the family went to USA.
