My Bauravilla ancestry has one mention of Hourihane that I know of as follows: Philip Barry came to Bauravilla from Schull (no idea of date). James Barry (1797-1887) married Ellen Crowley (1800-1898) and lived in Bauravilla. Their daughter Eliza Barry (1850-1934) married Patrick Donovan (1835?-1915) Feb. 25, 1868 in Keillienleagh RC Church in Skibbereen and lived in Cooragannive. Their eleventh child Elizabeth Marie Donovan (1885-1987) emigrated in 1904 and came to Springfield, Massachusetts. She is my grandmother.
My grandmother's first cousin is Julia Anne Barry O'Donovan,(1874-1967) daughter of John Barry and Julia Hourihane of Bauravilla. Julia Barry married Denis O'Donovan (1871-1911) - moved to Dublin. Julia Barry O'Donovan is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Hourihanes needed for DNA projects!

People named Hourihane are cordially invited to join the O'Hourihane DNA projects. This will be my only announcement. Hourihane has historically been associated with Cork in Ireland, however there are possibilities that some could have actually been O'Brien, or that they could have been Horan, Horgan, Horrigan, or Hanrahan.

The project home is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~skibbgirl/...
Shortcut: http://tinyurl.com/HourihaneDNAProject

I am looking for people of Irish descent named some variation of Horan, Horgan, Horrigan, Hanrahan, Hourihan, and even Howard to join the project. Due to a number of factors, there is a possibility that these surnames have historically been confused with each other.

The project is looking for Y-DNA test participants and also autosomal DNA test participants. If you are a Hourihane descendant and have NO CLUE where your ancestors were from in Ireland this project could over time shed some light on your research. The project contains a background; goals; a surname distribution map and other items of interest.

Hourihane Y-DNA and A-DNA projects

I just submitted a request to FTDNA for a Hourihane DNA project.

The project would be focused geographically on Co Cork and Munster, Ireland, and on names such as Hourihane, Hourican, Horrigan, Horgan, Horan, and the Americanized Irish Howard. Men with these surnames are invited to take a Y-DNA test, and anybody with these names anywhere in their direct ancestry can take the A-DNA (Family Finder) test.

Once the project is OK'd there will be more details on the project page. http://www.ftdna.com

My mother's maiden name was Heirene and during my research the Heirene name seems to disappear with John Heirene who would be my Gt Gt grandfather. Further research suggests that John was in fact John Hourihan who changed the family name in S Wales. Family folklore has always said that there was a name change in the past

HOURIHANE family in Wigan

I'm researching my mother's Irish roots. John and Alice or Ellen HOURIHANE left Cork by 1851 with children Patrick, Mary, Ann, Rose, John, Michael and Margaret all born in Ireland between 1834 and 1848. The girls all married in Wigan and became Mary Kennedy, Ann Glennon, Rose Green and Margaret Farrimond. The youngest, Margaret was my gr gr grandmother. I've searched half of the west cork Catholic parishes and had no luck. Has anyone else come accross this family.

By 1871 they have changed the family name to HORAN which was a common name from Mayo in the Lancashire coalfields at this time.

I hate to add to your difficulties but there are also numerous Hourihan(e)s in Caheragh parish. You might be best off by starting with the Tithe Listings which predated the Griffiths Valuation (mid 1850s) to determine possible Hourihan families.
My ggggmother was a Mary Hourihan, b.c. 1821, daughter of a John Hourihane and Mary Harrington, possibly of Bauravilla, Caheragh.

Thanks Fay for your advice. I did make a few finds, but sadly didn't see your message till I got back.

I've just spent my three days in Dublin searching for a 'needle in a haystack' for Margaret, daughter of John and Ellise or Ellen Hourihane born somewhere in Cork c. 1847. Her family moved to Wigan, Lancashire by 1851 where she is the youngest daughter with siblings Patrick, Mary, Anne, Rose, Michael & John. By 1871 they were all known as HORAN.

The nearest I found was Margaret daughter of Curly HOURICAN & Ellen TOBN of Gorladoo 25th May 1846 in Durras RC records. I also found a Margaret d.o. John HOARIHAN & Norri HAURHAN 2nd January 1848 of Rossmore in the same parish record.

Does anyone know if Curly could be a nickname for John or Norrie for Ellen?

The saddest record I found was in Castlehaven & Myross where the priest has written in August 1847 'a dreadful year of famine', and in November 1847 'all are dying of starvation'. There were very few births that year. This put my own fruitless search in perspective.
My grandfather John Regan's mother was a Mary Hourihane from Cork. A Hourihane from Ireland told me that the Hourihanes came from 3 townlands. Knockavoher(Kilmacabea parish), *Tullig (possibly Kilmacabea parish) and
Corran. "Corran" from Dunderrow parish, "Corran Beg" from Kilmoe parish and "Corran Middle" from Kilmacabea parish.
*Tullig is also in 6 other parishes; Bregoge, Kilerohane, Whitechurch, Drishane, Kilmaloda and Durrus. Keep these parishes in mind when you do your searches.

I have not proven that these townlands are correct. However, I did find a Tim Hourihane in Griffith's Valuation in Kilmacabea parish, location Corran North.

Hourihane from County Cork to Wigan, Lancs

I'm descended from John and Alice (or Elise) HOURIHANE from County Cork. They left Cork between 1848 and 1851 where they are on the 1851 census for Wigan, Lancashire with several children (Patrick, Mary, Ann, Rose, John, Michael, Margaret) born between 1834 and 1848 in Ireland. By the 1871 census the family name has changed to HORAN, and John has died in Wigan. I'm descended fom their youngest daughter Margaret. I suspect that the Hourihane family in Wales were related in some way.

I'm visiting Dublin in a few weeks to search the Catholic Church records available for Cork in the National Library. Can anyone advise on which parishes I should be looking for? I've only got one day and a long list of Cork Parishes!

Hi
To all Hourihane and O’Brien families I had a email from a lady today who told me that an Irish 'genealogist' told her that all 'Hourihan/e's from West Cork would originally have been 'O'Brien's'. As Hourihan was a 'sept' name -used for a particular branch of O’Brien’s. If this is true and can anyone give me any more details.

Hi Louise,

Just thought it might be worth contacting you as my grandfather was Daniel Hourihan, but changed his name to Daniel Howard. His father was Mortimer Hourihan. Daniel spent some time in America, returned and married my grandmother Mary Canty also from around Clonakilty. They ended up living in East Cork, where I was born and raised.
If you had any information it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm now living in Australia.

Regards,
Cathy
