We've lost track of the Houstons. I'm digging "forward," to try to find their descendants. William had one son who had 3 sons, so maybe there's hope. My most recent Houston was my gggmother--the only thing that's save us is the longevity. We've had 5 generations living at times.

Am also trying to piece together branches through census data (using naming patterns) and allied families marriages--but, as you know, that's tedious and tough-going. There's more cemetery info and death certificate info coming online all the time. Maybe that will help. Thanks for responding.

P might stand for Purnell...there are several Purnell's in our line. However, I don't have middle initials for most of mine. I have a James Houston born in 1780 to Purnell and Mary (Carey) Houston. This was in Sussex Co. Delaware and he migrated w/arent to Mongolia county VA in 1790. He married Jane Eckles in 1807 and all 10 of their children were born in KY where she was from. They all moved to Monroe County IN around 1830, and that is where he died in or arond 1858-60.

I don't know if this helps...but, good luck. I have many other James in the family too, but less information on them.

I am not sure what the initial P "stands for," or where he was originally born. I assumed he lived in South Carolina because the birth certificate of one of his children is from South Carolina. However, PA could not be impossible. What more do you know about James P. Houston?

Have you tracked down one of your Houston male cousins to participate in the DNA surname study?

Do you know where in NC he was born? - I have many missing male Houstons from my line in that era - I am sure some died but I think others may have moved - with children's identities unknown before 1850c some of these will be impossible to figure out without DNA to at least get us looking at the correct family line.

William & Robert Houston - NC TN MO

William L Houston is born 1828 in NC, marries in Monroe Co TN, then moves to Dent Co MO, then dies 1862 in Civil War.

William L names his sons: Joseph P and James Armstrong

Joseph P names his sons: John, Joseph, Christopher

He writes in his bible the names George Weir Houston and Jane Kirk. Some believe they are William's parents. I think they must be close cousins--mostly because I don't find the Armstrong family name in George Weir Houston's line AND because neither William nor his son Joseph name any of their sons George. Nor do they use Kirk or even a "K" among any of their children. Some think William's middle initial "L" is for "Lee" which would be a family name--and, I think their are Blairs in the George Weir line. (Blairs and Lees intermarried in early Virginia and possibly beyond.) Joseph's middle initial "P" could be "Paxton," but could be "Peeler," his mother's maiden surname.

I'm thinking that if his parents are dead by 1850, and he and Sarah move alone to Missouri, then get caught up in the Missouri civil war (which had its own mini civil war), he might have noted in his bible a cousin who is next of kin for Sarah's benefit if something happens to him, as it did.

Supporting that is the 1850 Census for Monroe Co TN showing Robert Houston, aged 13, living with Wm and his wife. The most likely reason would be that their parents are dead by 1850.

More detail of above:

William L Houston married Dec 21 1849 Sarah Jane Peeler (dau of preacher Joseph Peeler) in Monroe Co TN. William and Sarah move to Dent Co MO with their two eldest (living) children between March 1856 and July 1857, then he dies in Civil War 1862.

His children are named:
Joseph P (b 1851 TN)
Margaret Jane (b 1853 TN)
Martha A Elizabeth (b 1855 TN d 1856 TN)
Nancy E (b 1857 in MO)
James Armstrong (b 1860 MO d 1862 MO)

1850 Census for Monroe Co TN has:

"Houston, W. L. 21(NC), Sarah 17(TN), Robert 13"

Also, in early civil war Missouri, a young healthy male of 32 would have been forced to take sides, or otherwise be murdered. This happened to the 21-year-old brother of their next-door-neighbor, even though he was the son and brother of two well-known preachers and conscientious objectors. William would have known that his best chance of surviving the war alive would be to enlist with either side to avoid the guerillas.

My sense is that there are a lot more Houstons than are accounted for by the known genealogy lines. Which means that the lines are confused by lumping discreet bits of data into a few family lines--leaving many out in the cold, so to speak.

I may be wrong, but I saw the same happen in my Blands of Virginia. After 20 years of going in circles, we're now untangling the confusion by paying close attention to wives' and daughters' names (just like the males) and family surnames used as first and middle names--with the added help of DNA.

Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have seen Mathilda Hustion and her family, too, on the same page as John and Mary Jane Hogan, but have never been able to make a connection. I have always thought there was a connection. I even thought since the boy listed had the name of Drury maybe that was a family name and could be Mathilda's maiden name, but so far I have not been able to turn up anything. Thanks again for answering my query.

Not sure if this helps or not but in the 1860 Census for White Oak Township in addition to the John Bunyan and Mary Jane Hogan family you mention below appears the name "MATHILDA HUSTION" listed as head of family and born in North Carolina but age not specified. Under this name also appears the names Dionnah M. Hustion, aged 25, "Drury R. Hustion", aged 23, and Sarah E. Hustion, aged 18. I suspect that the "Hustion" should be "Huston" and that Mathilda was a widow and mother of Mary Jane, Dionnah M., Drury R., and Sarah E. Huston (all the children listed in the 1860 census were born in Tennessee)

Jim Houston
Mary Jane HOUSTON - b. 1829 TN

I am interesting in finding my great great grandmother's family. She was Mary Jane Houston born around 1829 in possibly Marshall Co., TN. Her husband's family came from Marshall Co., TN. She married John Bunyan Hogan in 1851 in Jackson Co., Arkansas, then they moved to Jefferson Co., Arkansas, and had four children: Elizabeth Ellen, Nancy or Mary D., George Anthony, and Sarah Narcissus. Sarah was just a baby when the family travelled to Illinois. Around Bellville, IL, Mary Jane died and was buried along the trail. The little family settled in Jefferson Co., IL. The children did not know anything about their mother's family, so today, I am still trying to find where Mary Jane fits into the Houston family. I see where you mention a Christopher Houston being from Marshall Co., TN and I am wondering if you know if he could have had a daughter, Mary Jane. Thank you!

John Houston, Sr.(1690-1754) - GGGrandfather of Sam Houston

Do you know if the gggrandfather of Sam Houston (1793-1863)--who I believe is the subject John,Sr-- had a brother Christopher born ~1790. This Christopher's father was supposedly named Robert. This line also came from Scotland via Ireland to PA ~1735, then migrated to Rockbridge Co,VA. My line ended up marrying into the Walker family, moved to western NC then to Russell Co (now Scott Co) VA.
Any help appreciated. If my line ties in with yours would be glad to share any info.

Thanks for the reply. They are probably from the same family. My Christopher(1686-1726) died in PA prior to the migration of some of the Houston's to Orange Co,VA (Became Augusta Co in 1738 Rockbridge Co in 1777).In the early 1740's a John Houston a Robert Houston acquired considerable property on Timber Ridge in what is now Rockbridge Co,VA. By 1778 there were several Johns,as well as a James,Samuel,William Henry on the list of tithables---but no Robert. It is possible,if not probable, that Robert was among the Houstons who migrated to Rowan Co,NC prior to a move to the Russell Co,VA area--which was formed out of Washington Co, VA in 1785.
Along with the Houston's there were Walkers Porters who migrated PA > Augusta Co,VA > Rowan Co,NC >SW VA. My line comes from Ann Houston (~1710- ~1774) who married John Walker III (1705-1778). Ann was supposedly the d/o Christopher Houston(1686-1726) sister of Robert, Samuel,Margaret, Martha Jennet"Jean".
I will do more searching in Washington Co,VA ( TN) Knox Co,TN for more clues. I will also keep an eye out for your Daniel Haston(Huston/ Houston)
Thanks again for your help. Jack

Thanks for your response. Gen. Sam Houston belonged to the fraternity commonly called Masons. My lodge, Spring Lodge #1174 A.F. A.M., which is in the Houston, Texas area, will be hosting 33 Scotsmen, who are from the Union Crown Lodge #307 and Thistle Rose Lodge #166 both in Glasgow Scotland.
Re: Houston - House-ton

My husband is a descendant of the Northeast Florida HOUSTON line. His great aunt once told us that the reason they changed the pronunciation to "Hughes-ton" after moving to So. Florida was that they got tired of correcting people. It was originally "House-ton." This family came to the Jacksonville area by 1811 from the St. Luke's Parish, Beaufort District, SC area (as far as we can tell across the river from Port Royal and current-day Paris Island). They were in that area of SC during at least the latter part of the Rev. War. We know that there are connections to a John HARVEY who owned a lot in Savannah and passed it to his daughters, Jane who married John Carroll HOUSTON and Mary who married William ASHMAN. Both the HOUSTON/HUSTON and ASHMAN families are listed in the 1790 census in Beaufort District. Would love to connect to the HARVEY and ASHMAN lines. Descendants eventually spread down the east Florida coast through Mayport, Eau Gallie/Melbourne, and on to Lemon City and Miami. Will gladly share the huge database of info we have gathered.

I found out yesterday from Mr. Allen R. Leach, noted historian of Lincoln Co. Both he and his wife lived and died at their 300 acre land settlement just east of Stanford KY and are buried in that vicinity. Stephenson Houston, however, had a son named Nathan and it was this Nathan that lived at Hustonville.

Mr. Leach also has several of the Houston tombstones from the old Hustonville cemetery in his garage and is hoping that Houston descendants might be interested in having them.

Mr Leach lives west of Hustonville.

Carol,
My records show that Sam houston was born 3/2/1793 in Timber Ridge, Rockbridge Co., Va. and died in Huntsville, Texas in 1863. His father was Major Samuel Houston and his mother's name was Elizabeth Paxton. His Grandfather was Robert Houston, son of John Houston Jr., brother of Thomas Houston who is my direct ancestor. He is of Scottish decent. My information is that this line of Houstons came to America between 1730-1750 from Ireland after having to leave Scotland for political reasons.
Hi Dick,
I to believe that misinformation is not a good thing and it is for that reason I am replying to your message. If you will check your records a little closer you will find that General Sam Houston was born in the year 1793. John Houston II was born in the year 1690 and died in 1754, some 39 years before the birth of the General, therefore he cannot be the father. John Houston II did indeed, according to records, sire a son Samuel but this is not General Sam Houston.
I too am a Houston descendant in the direct line of Thomas Houston, brother to John Houston II. I am sure you do indeed appreciate the correction.

Jack,
My records do not show that John Houston had a brother named Christopher. The brothers I have listed are Thomas, George, William and James. I suppose Christopher could be a middle name (???). I hope this has been of help.
Oh, by the way, my records show that your John's father was also named John, which would make him a Jr. Something to think about.
Ray

Gen. Sam Houston's parents -- Incorrect Information

Your information is incorrect. General Sam Houston's parents were John Houston II and Margaret Mary Cunningham. I am related to them both on a direct line on two different occassions. They appear in my pedigree on both the Russell line by way of the Henderson and again thru the Kennedy line. If you would like to continue this dialoque please e-mail me at richard_t_peix@yahoo.com I don't mean to sound like an ass by making such a correction but I am sure I am right in this and missinformation is not good for anyone so please forgive me for butting in but I would appreciate the same if I were incorect.

Ann Houston - John Walker

Jack, I am descended from Ann Houston and John Walker. Their dau.Martha m. Alexander Montgomery 11, they had Alexander 111, who m. Mary Elizabeth Johnson. Their dau. Isabel m. John Cole b 1780 in Montgomery co. Va. They had son, John Cole jr. who married Caty Minix in Floyd co. Ky. Two of their daughters are in my Grma columns. Cynthia m. John Watson and Melissa was with Wiley Salyer. This part of Floyd became Magoffin co. Ky abt 1860. ANYWAY--- I have the Walker/Rutherford info but nothing on Ann Houston (for sure.) I've seen Samuel and Christopher listed as fathers for her but no documentation. I suppose they were from Ireland, there were a lot of Houstons from there and The Walkers were "Scotch Irish" from County Down. I'd appreciate any info You have.
