John Houston + Mary Calhoun

Ancestry.com lists a marriage in Abbeville between John Houston and Mary Calhoun, 1774-1890.

According to 1823 Delaware probate records, my 3G-Grandfather, John R. Huston/Houston was married to Polly Calhoun/Calhoon, daughter of Elisha and Alice (Alcey) Calhoon of Sussex County, Delaware. Other than the mention in Elisha Calhoun's probate administration of "John Houston and Polly his wife", I have found no reference to this marriage in either the Delaware or Maryland archives.

I'd like to pursue the Abbeville marriage, but the date is given only as 1774-1890. Does anyone have any information on the Abbeville marriage of John Houston and Mary Calhoun, or where I could go to nail down the date? Thank you!

Andrew R. Huston

Alexander Houston and William Houston of Ballemeanaghe & Cullybackey'

Shirley,

For some reason your message concerning the subject individuals was removed from the message boards. Or at least I couldn’t find it. However, I'll try to restate the question as I remember it, along with a response.

(Q1) Who was the father of the Alexander Houston of Ballemeachan who married Anna Edmonstone and was he living at the time of the marriage?

(R1) I believe the father of this Alexander Houston was WILLIAM HOUSTON 4th of Cotreoch, who was married to KATHERINE VAUS. WILLIAM HOUSTON 4th of Cotreoch died, I believe, between Bet. 08 Jul 1645 - 13 Jun 1655, so he was living at the time of the marriage in 1625.

(Q2) Who was William Houston of Ballemeanaghe & Cullybackey' and what was his relationship to Alexander Houston of Ballemeachan?

(R2) I am not absolutely sure about this but I believe that this William Houston of Ballemeanaghe & Cullybackey who was living at the time of the aforementioned 1625 marriage, may have been the son of WILLIAM HOUSTON, 3rd of Cotreoch, (Alexander Houston's grandfather) and Katherine McCulloch, Lady Jedburgh.

Jim Houston
Captain Thomas Houston and Benedict Arnold, April 1779

Those who have Captain Thomas Houston of the Pennsylvania Navy in their family tree may be interested in a court case involving Captain Thomas Houston and Benedict Arnold in April 1779 documented in the Google Books on-line document titled, "Proceedings of a General Court Martial for the Trial of Major General Arnold", by Francis Suydam published in 1865 and available at http://books.google.com/books?id=pEgSAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA8...

I have not been able to tie my line of the Houstons with Captain Thomas Houston but I believe that his parents were Hugh Houston and Jean or Jane Ramsey both born in Scotland. Captain Thomas Houston was the father of Charles Houston a famous judge of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Texas
I am trying to find anything about William James Houston born abt 1864 in Missouri. His last residence that I know was Mt. Hope, McLean, IL, in 1910. I am assuming he died during that decade because his wife Urie and two sons Clarence (my grandfather) and Earl moved to Bay St. Louis by 1920. Any information would be wonderful! Thanks!

Hubbard of Greentop or Queen City, MO area in 1865. Had one girl...named Deliah Josephine b. 1868, and two boys...no known names. I believe Polly to have had father named Andrew Jackson and mother named Nancy Logan....but can't find data further back, or any siblings to Polly. Also believe some cousin relationship to Gen.Sam's original familyline.

He was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Philadelphia to David and Elizabeth Houston, graduated from the Wharton School and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. David began his career as a professor of insurance at the Wharton School and later held posts as professor of economics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Pennsylvania State University. In the early 1970s, he was a founder of Pitt's Alternative Curriculum. He was an active member of the Union of Radical Political Economists and became the managing editor of the Review of Radical Political Economics. Often contributing his voice and presence as an advocate for peace, he was active and outspoken about the evils of war. He is survived by his wife, Janice L. Carlino, and children, Penelope, of Oakland, Calif., Mark, of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, and Heidi and grandchild Laura, of Seattle. Visitation with the family will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in the home. He will be buried in Middletown, N.Y.
Annie Houston, born 1904 Poplar, London. England

Annie Downs, nee Houston, was my maternal grandmother; she was tragically killed in the Blitz in WW2, along with her 3 youngest children (Derek, aged 4 years; Margaret Rose, aged 3 years, and Iris, just 1 year).

Annie's widower, William Mark Downs, remarried in 1943, but this was not a happy outcome for my Mum and she left home when she was 16. I never knew any of my Mum's family, and have never even seen a picture of my grandmother or grandfather, so I am desperately seeking any relative (especially one who has any photos they would be happy to copy for me).

This is the first time that I have done any research into my grandparents, as the loss of her Mum and baby brother and sisters is something that is still, after 67 years, incredibly raw and painful for my Mum. She has never had a photo of her Mum and I would dearly love to find one for her. PLEASE HELP, if you can.

Many thanks

Mel
Reply Report Abuse Print

indicates an unread message
The well has been christened "No. 1 of the Chandler Oil and Gas Company" by Miss Ethel Houston, a school teacher. She conceived the idea of taking her pupils to see the initial work of the drillers and before she left climbed the derrick and broke a bottle of wine on the upright. When the board of directors heard of her feat they voted to send her to the World's Fair this summer, to furnish a free pass and pay her expenses for thirty days while at the exposition.

Emily Margaret HOUSTON -- b. 1833 TN

My great grandmother was Emily Margaret Houston, born 1833 in Maury Co. Tn. Her father was Richard Franklin Houston (some records have him as Franklin Richard Houston) b-1794 in Iredell Co., North Carolina. Family lore has maintained for a century and a half that her Houston line was closely related to Gen. Sam Houston, possibly a cousin. Emily married Elbert Green Betts (1821-1876) in DeSoto Parish, La. in Apr 1853. I have a copy of their marriage certificate. They eventually moved to leon. Co. Tx. where they had 9 children, six of whom lived to adult life, my grandfather, Franlin, being one of them. e believe Emily's grandfather to have been James Franklin Houston (1747-1819. Can you shed any more light on this "tradition" or help us put it to rest? Thank you, robertbettsnj@comcast.net

Luther Houston, Killed by Horse Thieves, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 27 November 1902, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

KILLED BY HORSE THIEVES

The Man Found Dean Near Swan Lake, Oklahoma, Has Been Identified

Guthrie: An unknown man was found dead recently near Swan Lake, in Caddo County. His hands were tie behind him and a rope was around his neck. It was announced he was a m ember of the Casey gang of horse thieves. Now it is ascertained he was Luther Houston, a citizen of Chickasha, I. T., who left home three weeks ago with several horses. The supposition is that Houston fell in with the horse thieves, who killed him. He was identified by his mother.

David & Mary HOUSTON of Rowan Co., NC

"Hello Cousins!"

Am hoping that one or more of you may be familiar with the family of David and Mary (MORRISON) HOUSTON of Rowan Co., NC. David (1718-1762 NC) and Mary (1719-1781 NC) had a dau. Jean, who is referred to in her mother's will as Jean WATSON.

Might any of you know for a fact that Mary's estate packet has been searched and the identity of Jean (HOUSTON) WATSON's husband revealed? Some WATSON family researchers are most confident that Jean HOUSTON was the wife of James WATSON (1738-1802 SC), while at least one other researcher has stated that she married one David WATSON.

Who married Jean HOUSTON? James, David, or still another yet unidentified WATSON? Any and all assistance in resolving this question once and for all will be most appreciated!

Thank you "Cousins!"

TTYL

Craig

William Henry Houston, b. 1824 MS

I too am looking for Wm. Henry Houston in Arkansas in late 1880's. This Wm. H. Houston was born in Miss. ca. 1824. Married __? date unknown, had a son Charles b. ca. 1852 in Miss. Wm. Houston and family ended up in Texas before 1864, as he has a new wife and 2 children born there. This 2nd wifes name was Harriet__?. They then came to Independence Co. AR ca. 1868. They had 5 children, plus Charles. The children by Harriet are: Harriet, Nancy, W. A., J. S., J. G. and a R. Richards, orphan age 3 was living with them in 1880 census in Independence Co. AR. Do any of these names sound familiar? Charles Houston married Teresa "Tressy" Smith ca. 1877 in or around Indpendence Co. AR. My line comes through their daughter Dovie Houston/Simmons. I don't have Wm. H. Houston's 1st wife's name and I haven't been able to find a death date on Wm. Henry or Charles Houston. The W. A. Houston above could be WM. A. Houston, b. 1870 AR.

Houston Cousins,

On pages 5-10 of the Google On-Line book titled, "Letters of Royal and Illustrious Ladies of Great Britain"***, is a transcription of a letter from Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland, widow of James IV, to Cardinal Wolsey, dated 21 August 1526.
James Houston, Marksman at Siege of Londonderry

All,

In the book, "Christopher Houston, 1829-1892", Compiled by Kenneth Houston and published 1973 in Chicago by Adams Press, it is claimed that James Houston the marksman who killed the king's standard bearer during the siege of Londonderry in 1689 is the grandson of Anthony Houston of Drummaston and his wife Susan Murray. This Anthony Houston of Drummaston, son of WILLIAM HOUSTON, 4th of Cotreoch, and KATHERINE VAUS is, I believe, my 9th great-uncle.

Unfortunately, the author of the book did not provide any documentation validating a connection between Anthony Houston of Drummaston and this James Houston. Anyone out there have any documentation one way or the other on this connection?

Jim Houston
William Houston of Cotreoch, Notary Public for the Privy Council in 1585?

All,

Thought you all might find this transaction I found in the document, "Register Of The Great Seal Of Scotland", Vol III, 1578-1585 interesting. This is the second time that I have seen William Houston referenced as a notary public (the first may be found on page 19 of the document titled, "Scottish Record Society, Charter Chest of the Earldom of Wigtown, 1241-1681"). This document includes the notation, "Trottreoth (?Cottrouthe), like perhaps there was an transcription problem in the original record. This appears to me to be quite close to "Cottreoch" which is a common spelling of the manor which the Houstons of Cotreoch occupied in Whithorn (or Quitherne), Wigtownshire. So, what do you all think? Am I barking up the wrong tree or could this possibly be our William Houston of Cotreoch?

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Texas

=========

" Registration of band of caution in £10,000 by Alexander Stewart of Garlies, as principle and Sir Patrick Vans of Barnbarroch, as surety that the said Alexander, and those for whom he is obliged by the general band, shall faithfully serve the King, his lieutenant or warden, in the pursuit of Johnne, Lord Maxwell, Robert Maxwell, and their accomplices, and theta the said principle shall enter before the Privy Council of the Justice when required upon fifteen days warning. The band I subscribed at Quitherne and Edinburgh, 29 April and May 1585, before these witnesses: John Gowne (McKgowne), provost of Quithern, notary pubic; William Houston of Trottreoth (?Cottrouthe); Petir McKdowell; fiar [sic] of Machirmoir: and James Adamsoun, minister at Quithern.”

HOUSTONs -- Brick Masons and Ministers

I am also looking for the branch of Houstons (Huston back then) who were brick masons and where they originated. I find them in Washington, PA in the 1800's. They also seemed to be involved in the Presbyterian Churches of the Deciples of Christ which later bacame the First Christian as ministers. Brick trade is still in the family to this day.

Searching for the parents of John HOUSTON. His father supposedly was William HOUSTON and his mother Elizabeth KELLY, Susannah LONG or ??? John born in Hendricks County, Indiana, 1801. Have been unable to locate birth record or death record, 1862, which might have been in either Clinton County, MO or Lucas County, IA. He and his father were somehow associated with a Danville Academy in Danville, Indiana. John is in the 1840 Hendricks County, IN census and in the 1860 Clinton County, MO census listed with his second wife, Harriet Shannon Crow. Have been unable to locate him in any 1850 census. John's son, Thomas Chase HOUSTON was my ggrandfather.

Frank HOUSTON/HUSTON possibly from OH died 1907

I am looking for information on a Frank HOUSTON, possibly/likely from OHIO. The only information I have is that he was married to my great-grandmother, Olive "Bessie" MARTIN, probably about 1905, probably in OHIO and that they had one son, LaDoit Marion HOUSTON b: 16 AUG 1906, possibly in VanWert Co., OH. According to information I have from another descendant, Frank died in 1907. My great-grandmother was born in 1888, so I am guessing he was born somewhere around that time. She was from the VanWert Co., OH area, although I have not been able to locate her on the 1900 census, so she could have been living somewhere else at that time. I believe her and her siblings were farmed out after their mother died in 1896.

Anyone have a Frank HOUSTON in their family tree that might be a connection?

Send off for John Houston of that Ilk, Late Provost of Glasgow, circa 1610

Page 29 of the Google online book titled, "Memorials of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1599-1850" (http://books.google.com/books?id=xU8BAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA29&am... ) , describes an elaborate and expensive send off for John Houston of that Ilk who took his own life circa 1609 (brief abstract included below). The word "bowelling" below apparently describes the embalming process performed on John Houston. Embalming was unusual at this time and one wonders if the embalming process was required because John had committed suicide.

Jim Houston

29

“Two years later we come on a minute regarding him, dated 26th May, 1610, which need not be quoted in full, but the essential part is here given. “The said James Braidwod debursit and gaif furth the said sowme [‘fourtie poundis money’] to maister Petir Low, pairtlie for his fey and pairtlie for the expensis maid be him in bowelling of the lard of Howstoun, lait provest; thairfoir the said James be this present act is dischargit of the said sowrne resauit be him as said is, and siklyke ordanis ane warrand to be direct to Robert Hogisyard, thesaurer, vnder subscriptioun of the clerk, to ansuer Mareoun Steward of the sowme of xxxvij ii xs as for wyne and vthir expenssis furnist and maid be hir the tyme of the said provestis bowelling.” The minute requires a word of explanation. Why it was that the defunct Sir John Houston, late Provost of Glasgow, was not allowed to sleep with his fathers without being subjected to the procedure of “bowelling”; in what that process consisted; and why in connection therewith there was incurred such a considerable bill for wine and other et cetras, as if the occasion had been something of a gaudeamus or an Irish wake—these are points on which the minute quoted throws no light.”
Cicero 'Irvin' HOUSTON m. Martilla WARREN -- GA > TX

Seeking more information on this family and contact with living descendants to exchange information. (I am from the Warren line).

Martilla WARREN (b.3 July 1852 Heard Co., GA d. 6 Mar 1927) m.ca. 1870 in Heard Co. GA, Cicero ‘Irvin’ HOUSTON b.27 Apr 1849 Heard Co. GA d. 27 Aug 1899 in Panola Co. TX . She was 17 and he was 21 when they were first farming in Franklin and Enon Grove, Heard Co. GA. As of June 1870 they had no children yet. ‘Irvin’ Houston was the son of Samuel F. Houston (1821 GA) and his wife Frances Houston (b.1829 GA daughter of Oliver Houston and Cynthia Flournoy. They were cousins.) Samuel Houston, Irvin’s father, was first in 1850 in Coweta Co. GA. Then he is found in 1860 working as an ‘Overseer’. By 1870 he is farming in Heard Co. GA. He later moves to Meriwether Co. GA by 1880 and is last found living with his son in law John Chappell in 1900 in Coweta Co. GA. Martilla (Warren) Houston lived with her husband in Georgia where a number of their children were born, but by Nov 1885 they had moved their family to Panola County, Texas and were farming.
James Houston -- Siege of Londonderry (1689)

I Found this text on page 378 on the book, “A History of the Irish Presbyterians”, by William Thomas Latimer published in 1902

“The Rev James Houston of Ballindrait received his training in this seminary [academy at Strabane]. Mr. Houston was descended from James Houston a celebrated marksman, who killed the standard-bearer of King James as His Majesty approached the walls of Londonderry. Mr. Houston’s son Christopher, a boy of nine years old, was with him during the siege. That boy, afterwards became the father of three sons; one of these was the grandfather of the Rev. James Houston, Ballindrait; another was grandfather of Messrs. Ross Houston, Edergole, James Houston, Lifford, John Houston, Ballynahatty, and Patrick Houston, Beragh; and the third was the great-grandfather of the Rev. John Houston, Ballynahatty. “

Anybody have additional information on this James Houston, his ancestors or descendants?

Jim Houston
