Next time you are heading towards Salem, let me know ASAP. Maybe I could meet you there? I usually try to drive by a few times a year and just check on things, make sure the fence is intact, the grass is getting cut, the stones are upright, etc.

I know where the old brick kiln was, where the barn stood, where the house was, etc.

Would love to pass this to someone who has a real interest...

thanks

Hi Joretta,
I have the lineage between John Henry Houtz to Lorentz Hautz abt 1600. I also have about 5 generations of descendants of John Houtz, one line goes to the mid 1960's. What kind of information are you looking for? He was born in Virginia and died in Champaign Co. Ohio. They were married 10 Oct 1841 in Clark Co. Ohio.
Regards,
Vernon Houtz
Lawrenceburg, KY

I live about 80 miles from this site, but worked with the City of Salem on the restoration of the cemetery with a family member of the Houtz clan.

I have a large file on the restoration of this cemetery. I will try to find it in a day or two - have a busy day tomorrow - it is in a storage box. I do not remember the Gish name, but it has been several years since I worked on that project. I am still in contact with a childhood friend, who is a Houtz, which is how and why this all started. I worked mostly with a cousin who was elderly and I am not sure of his status now; I have not chatted or corresponded with him for a while. I recently cross passed paths with a new Houtz friend, who is prob. a distant relative, too. cindy romano at hot mail dot com is my personal email - think you can figure that out - feel free to contact me there - but I will also post on here for others who may be searching! I HAVE PICS of this cemetery, too. Only one person was interned after the civil war - this is a very old one!

Is there someone I could call/email, etc about getting a list of names or something so I could see if we have family there? Can you put me in contact with anyone that can do this? Or can you do this? Is the property under management on premises?
Many thanks!

The Pennsylvania Dutch are Germans from the upper (southern) Rhine valley. Germans do not call themselves "German" but call themselves "Deutch". Americans heard this as "Dutch". The words "German" and "Germany" are Latin words, the names the Romans applied to the lands and peoples east of the Rhine

My first thought would be that the name comes from the French for "high". Looking in my dictionary, I see a location, Haute Normandie...a metropolitan region of NW France with the chief city of Rouen. Since a few of the Houts, Hauts, etc. are from Bavaria, then from the mountains? But Hassloch is on lower ground, so were they transplants from another location in Europe? I did look at a Michelin map one time and they show quite a few Haupts, Hauts as geographical locations in the mountainous areas of France. If you have a Dutch background as opposed to a Deutche (German) family history, then maybe this might give you an indication of where to look for clues.

This little cemetery is located near the Lewis Gale warehouse. Coming from Lewis Gale, turn right at the light just past Sheetz going toward GE. The road takes you to a set of warehouses on the right. Nestled between 2 buildings is a little fenced area with the cemetery. The stones are quite old.

Our beloved Dad and Grandpa Vincent Robertson Houtz passed from this life Friday, September 23, 2005, peacefully with family members. Dad was the youngest son of Heber Hall Houtz and Isabell Calista Robertson, born April 26, 1932 in Springville, Utah. He served in the Northwest States Mission; upon returning he married Joan Grant in the Salt Lake Temple September 20, 1956. He worked for Hercules for several years and was retired from the Salt Lake City Corporation. Dad was a little league and Babe Ruth coach and umpired baseball for several years. He was an avid BYU fan. His church service included former Bishop Taylorsville Fifth Ward, former High Councilor, taught Gospel Doctrine for 26 years, served in the Salt Lake Temple for 25 years, and served in the Bishopric at the State Women's Prison facility. Dad loved the Savior and he led his family and friends by his example. We will miss his love for life and for the people that he knew. He loved his children and found great joy in his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Michael Vincent (Susan) of South Ogden, UT; Craig Steven (Connie), Fort Collins, CO; daughters, Julie and Jolene, both of Taylorsville, UT; and Bradley Joseph (Nicolle) of South Jordan, UT. Sisters, Mildred Bray, Marjorie Larsen, and Vera Meriwether; and his 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Grant; son, David Kyle; daughter-in-law, LeiLani Skinner Houtz; granddaughter, Amy Houtz; his brothers, Merlin, Keith, and Rex; and sister, Lois. We look forward to being together again, one day, as a family! Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 12 noon, at the Taylorsville Utah Stake Center, 4800 So. 1365 W. Family and friends may visit Monday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road, and Tuesday at the church, 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment, Redwood Memorial Estates.
Published in the Salt Lake Tribune on 9/25/2005.

The cemetary is in the Intervale Industrial park not far from where the Explorer Park "Houtz Barn" originally stood. Just stay on the main road and it will be straight ahead after you make the first left. It is surrounded by a metal fence provided by the city of Salem. My father restored the graveyard about 5 years ago. He reports that there is a Catherin Gish buried there. (I think I have misspelled the first name.) It is interesting that the Gishes and Houtzes were close as there are some Gishes buried in Roanoke Illinois near some Houtzes. If you have any questions, I will try to find an answer. We have 16 Gishes in our Family Tree records but I could not find Catherin.

FYI - John Houtz in Perry Co. PA - 1846

I have an order of sale of land dated November 1846 for a John HOUTZ, deceased, in Greenwood Twp. Perry Co. PA. Administrator for the deceased is Abraham GRUBB. The sale was for 25 acres in the above township. My ancestor Frederick FRONK made a bid to purchase but was unable to pay. There is no other information on John Houtz or family in this order of sale. I actually mistook HOUTZ for PFOUTZ, a family which a FRONK married into.

Hope this helps someone,

Marcia Fronk

I came across it at the Perry County Historians when looking into records for Frederick Fronk. The Perry County Historians have the Orphan's Court records on micro film.
John Houtz dies intestate and the land is being sold to pay debts. Abraham Grubb Adm.
The date of the sale was Friday Oct. 27th, 1843
Hope this will help.

Looking for any information on a woman named Nannie Ann Houtz. She was born Oct. 13, 1889 and died June 24, 1968. Also looking for info on a Nancy Ann Houtz who was born April 18,1887 and died Dec. ? 1962 in PA. Both of these ladies were born, reared, and died in PA. Huntingdon county is a very likely county but the twps may vary. One lady is said to have resided in Petersburg. I am a cousin of these gals through the McCardle side of their family. John Curtin McCardle was my Ggrandmother Julia McCardle Vaughn's twin brother. John C. was Nancy's "father'. She is also mentioned in his household along with he and his wfie in the 1900 census as John C.'s neice. Soon afterward she is also tied with the surname Miller. We are trying to get this story straight for our records. Anyone out there who can help clear up this old family mystery?
HELP PLEASE.........................................
Pam Vaughn Richmond
