Oliver Otis Howard was born on 8 November 1830 at Leeds, Maine. He was the son of Rowland Bailey and Eliza (Otis) Howard. His family was of modest circumstances. His father died when he was nine years old and he lived with his Uncle, John Otis for the next two years. He graduated from Bowdouin College and Later West Point Military Academy in 1854. On 14 Feb. 1855, Oliver Otis Howard married Elizabeth Anne Waite, daughter of Alexander Black Waite of Portland Maine. This couple had seven children: Lt. Col. Guy Howard who was killed at Rio Grande River, Philippine Islands 22 Oct 1899; Maj. John Howard; Maj. J. W. Howard; Chauncey O. Howard; Harry S. Howard; and daughters Grace Ellen Howard and Elizabeth (Bessie) Howard. He enjoyed a brilliant military career, taught at West Point, and was a writer. He died on 26 Oct 1909 at Burlington, Vermont.
