Samuel Howard was born in Evergreen Alabama on April 8, 1915, to Allie B. (Samuel) and Frank Howard. He departed this life on Tuesday, November 13, 2007. He married the former Mary Rankins, and to this union one child, Alvetta, was born. The family moved to Toledo, Ohio in the early 1940's. Samuel was a member of Third Baptist Church for over 50 years, and served on the Usher's Board. Samuel was an employee of Jeep/Chrysler/American Motors from 1948 to 1979. He also worked as a courier for the former Toledo Home Federal Savings and Loan for over 15 years. "Gramps", or "Uncle Sam", as he was known, didn't slow down upon retirement, however,. he enjoyed working as a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross, going to the J. Frank Troy Center, and traveling.
Preceding him in death by only a few months was his cherished daughter, Alvetta Y. Moore. Also preceding him in death were brothers, Clanford Howard, and Wilbert Howard; sisters, Anzella Fox Martin, Minnie Pitts, Evelyn Harbut, Augustine Woodson, and granddaughter, Cathy Yvonne Moore. He leaves to celebrate his life and the joy he brought, Mary Rankins Howard, his wife of 68 years; a son Lonzie (Cynthia) Greene, of Mobile, Alabama; son-in-law, John C. Moore, Holland, Ohio; brothers, Frank Howard, McArthur (Cora) Howard, James (Lavera) Howard, Edward (Roberta) Howard, all of Dayton, Ohio, and Robert (Wanda) Howard of MD; sisters-in-law, Cleo (Wilbur) West, Artelia Bradley, of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Howard (Shanon) Moore, Audrey Madyun, of Toledo, Ohio, Helen Greene and Brandon Greene of Mobile, Alabama; a host of other grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home, 572 Nebraska Ave., on Monday, November 19, 2007, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Third Baptist Church, 402 Pinewood, Toledo, Ohio, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2007 the wake 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio. Memorials can be made to the Cathy Y. Moore Scholarship Fund, in care of the Community Foundation of Toledo, or the Third Baptist Church Building Fund.
