Was reviewing HOWE posts am offering the following from my research. Despite the book by Wm. P. Howe's granddau which states Rufus's son Rufus was the first, I believe that is wrong. I have found data which place him as the sixth child of Rufus Long and wife Chloe Coburn/Colburn.
1900 Census of Owego Village, Tioga Co., NY showed Rufus Howe, age 76, born May 1824, living at 40 West Main St. alone. Sons Rufus C., Jonas L. Lincoln Howe also lived in the village. This Rufus matched Caton census data from July 1850, age 26, June 1855 state census, age 31, born in Steuben Co., NY. 1865 state census also listed him born in Steuben Co., NY. Local Tioga Co., NY researcher found his TS "Rufus Howe 1824-1913" at Tioga Cemetery in Owego.
Brother Harry N. Howe was born in Chenango Co, NY per 1855-1875 state censuses. Ages in censuses suggest he was born ca 1816-1817 which would make him the third child. I have not found his death/burial data. A 1891 Gazetteer lists wife Martha as "widow of Harry." Last census find was 1875 in Caton.
As posted before, William P. Howe was born Oct. 16, 1813 in Guilford, Chenango Co., NY. His death cert. lists age at death bp. Supported by state census listing Chenango Co. as bp. TS listing. This makes William the first known child.
Since Chloe was born July 16, 1796, she was 18 when son Wm. born. Her bp variously given in censuses. 1855 state census son Wm's 1892 death cert.list her born in Chenango Co., NY. 1850 1870: b. Mass. (Rufus.b.VT) 1860: b. VT (Rufus b.Mass)-probably reversed. She died March 17, 1871 before death certs available. 1893 marriage record of son John list his mother as Chloe Coburn as does dau Adeline's death cert.
Second child of Chloe and Rufus was son Harvey C. Howe b. 1815 per his ts in Caton which lists him age 77 at death on Jan.21, 1892. Ages in censuses support that. State censuses list bp as Chenango Co., NY. He died unmarried and left a lengthy will and probate record in Steuben Co, NY.
Chloe's dau Sally was born ca 1818 in Chenango Co, NY per censuses. She mar. Smith Spencer Jr. She died in Corning on Feb.5, 1899.
Dau Elsitha Howe b. ca 1822 in Chenango Co., NY. Mar. Elias Fuller who died bef.July 25, 1850 census and she did not remarry. She died in Caton on Feb.5, 1878, having kept house for unmarried Harvey Howe.
Joseph H. Howe b. July 24, 1826 in Steuben Co. NY followed his brother Rufus' birth. He died on April 26, 1903 per information on file at the Chemung Co.,NY Historical Society. He lived in Elmira in 1900 census.
Next born was Mary E. Howe ca 1831/1832 in Steuben Co., NY and died Feb. 19, 1895 per Steuben Co., NY clerk though a family researcher lists 1894. She mar. Horace W. Norton ca 1863. She was a plaintiff in a 1893 court case filed in Steuben Co., NY in which she sued her siblings over land! Genealogy goldmine!
Adaline Howe was born June 11, 1836 in Steuben Co., NY. She died July 24, 1912 in Corning City, Steuben Co., She mar. John Tator bef 1860 and he "killed in battle in Sept.1864" per military data in 1865 state census. (Do NOT have any more info on this.)
Adaline mar.2nd to Samuel Burt bef Feb.1892 as shown in 1892 state census.
Harrison Howe b. 1841 in Steuben Co., NY. Died April 2, 1895. Buried at Hope Cemetery, Corning per cemetery database at Corning library.
John T. Howe b. Aug.1842 Caton, Steuben Co, NY. per censuses, d. 1917 in Caton per his TS.
