DNA Project to connect to 'cousins' and lost families

I am Al Howes V.P. of the Howes Family Association and with 20th Gen. "Cuz" Paul Howes of Norfolk, England (found through DNA) have been working together over the past few months to plan a DNA project. The aims of the project are:

1 - to establish the English roots of Thomas Howes, who emigrated to America in 1637

2 - to help individual Howes, Howse, Howe, How family members break through brick walls in their research

3 - to bring together Howes families from around the world, and add to the sum of knowledge about our family

4 - to examine whether there are common roots between Howes, Howse and Howe families

We have just obtained a 50% discount voucher for DNA testing kits from a commercial service. Yes, that's half-off, but the vouchers are valid only until July 30, 2008. So you will need to make a quick decision to benefit from this special offer.

A few words about DNA testing: it's a simple swab, which you rub around your mouth for a few moments and then mail back. The supplier then sends you an email some weeks later with the URL to your test results. Those results

will be available to my English cousin Paul, and myself, as administrators of the site, but you will not have to disclose your identity to us. Once you have your own DNA test results, you can do your own searches on the suppliers and other sites to find matches. I can provide anyone interested with a lot more information on the usefulness of testing if desired.

If you are interested in using the discount voucher, please write to me off-list. I will send you more background on the project, DNA testing and the voucher ID.

Many thanks in advance
'Cuz' Al Howes, Co-Administrator Howes DNA Project

I am looking for a Lord William Howe who died about 1780-1790. The story goes: Lord and Lady Howe sailed to North Carolina "on their honeymoon". Lady Howe was upset by the rough crossing and when William Howe returned to England to settle his business she stayed behind. He caught pneumonia and died. She had his son William Howe Jr. and later remarried in North Carolina. Her name may have been Mary. There was the family of Job Howe living in Wilmington, North Carolia at that time and they may have been related? This is not the Lord William Howe of the American Revolution.

Howe (also listed as Ellen B.), born September, 1829. Father of Milo Howe, Francis B. Howe, Flora D. Howe and Audley B. Howe. Residence in 1850 was Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, PA.

I'm trying to find the parents and grandparents of this Samuel Howe in order to determine from where in Ireland or Scotland or England this branch of my family comes. Any and all help would be MOST appreciated!

~Ken Dickinson

looking for Mabel Howe and children(blogett home 4 children)

I'm trying to locate my great grandfather second wife and her 4 children. I don't know the whole story but whats been told over many years is this. In nov of 1929, the howe children(kennett, betty born 7-10-23, dorothy, and Arthur) and one stage(frances charles) were placed in the Blogett home for children located in Michigan. In dec 1929, the 4 howe children were picked up by a Mable and Charles R. Stage. This I have proven to be correct according to Blogett home records. Now as the story continues and at this point unproven. I believe that this is both Charles and Mabels second marriage. I also believe by the way its written on records received from the home that Charles and Mabel are married at the time that the children were taken to the home. Frances was left behind and never returned home. He was released from the home and wandered from farm to farm working for room and board. I believe he saw his father on his death bed in 1972. from 1929 to 1972 he did not know where they had moved. I'm despartely seeking anyone that may have heard anything similar or may know who they are. Frances was married and his wife, my grandmother is not doing well and would like to find out who they are. any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

Howes and Wostenholme in Sheffield

Hello,
I am looking for my greatgrandmother's mother, who she thinks was called Isabel Howe. (my ggm is 90 and her mother died when she was ten, so her memory of that branch of her family is a little hazy).

She believes that Isabel was born in 1885, possibly in Sheffield. I have scoured the censuses and can only find a potential person in 1901: *nothing* in 1891 despite hours of trying all possible combinations!

She believes that Isabel had 14 brothers and sisters, of whom she can name these:
Marion
Betty
Marjorie
Albert
Horace
Victor
Matthew
Bertha
Agnes
Agnes went to Australia at the age of 16 and no one heard from her again.

Also, she thinks her grandmother's maiden name was Wostenholme.

Does anyone know anything about any of these people?
Does anyone know anything about Howes in Sheffield in general?
Does anyone have any ideas of new ways for me to search for them? (That's the other thing: names like Horace and Victor are quite uncommon, but i can't find them ANYWHERE!!)

Thanks for reading this novel!
Lydia

William H. Howe of Perkiomenville, PA, executed Fort Mifflin 1864 - Info & Descendants; are you related?

I am not related to this family, but I am posting the results of research on William H. Howe, who was executed on 26 Aug 1864 at Fort Mifflin, PA. I would be most interested in hearing from any descendants of this man.

GENERATION ONE

1. William H. HOWE, b. abt. 1839, Pennsylvania; d. 26 Aug 1864, Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Married to Hannah UNKNOWN (b. abt. 1831, Pennsylvania; d. poss. aft. 1880, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania) in 1860 at Perkiomenville, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. Children of William H. HOWE and Hannah UNKNOWN:

i. 2. Charles M. HOWE, b. Nov. 1861, Perkiomenville, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. bef. 1942, Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts.

ii. 2. William H. HOWE, b. Feb. 1863, Perkiomenville, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. bef. 1930, prob. Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.

NOTES for William H. HOWE and Hannah UNKNOWN: William was one of only 164 Civil War "deserters" (among the thousands who deserted) who was executed by the government for this crime. He was also convicted (after two trials) for the killing of one of the bounty hunters who attempted to break into his home and arrest him. William was imprisoned at Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, PA, and, at the age of 24, he was the only person ever executed there, leaving behind a wife and two young children. The identity of his parents remains a mystery, but research indicates that he was probably of Irish descent. He was present at the disasterous battle at Fredericksburg. Suffering from severe illness and unable to obtain medical treatment, William left the army and returned to his farm in Perkiomenville, where his wife nursed him back to health. When two bounty hunters came to his home in the middle of the night and attempted to break in, William shot one of the men in the insuing scuffle, testifying later that he did so in defense of his family. Although his lawyer appealled William's case all the way to President Lincoln, the appeals were denied and Howe was executed by hanging. William's widow, Hannah, is last found living with her sons in Norristown, PA, in 1880 and is not found there in 1900. She may have died, or remarried.

GENERATION TWO

2. Charles M. HOWE (William1), b. Nov. 1861, Perkiomenville, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. bef. 1942, Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts. Married to Emily H. UNKNOWN (b. Jun. 1862, Pennsylvania; d. aft. 1942, prob. Springfield, Hampden Co., Pennsylvania) in 1889 at Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. Children of Charles M. HOWE and Emily H. UNKNOWN:

i. 3. Maurice Charles HOWE, b. 27 Sep 1890, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. Died UK.

ii. 3. Pauline E. HOWE, b. 26 Jan 1897, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. 9 May 1979, Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts.

NOTES for Charles M. HOWE and Emily H. UNKNOWN: Charles worked as a cigar maker throughout his life in both Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. He is last found living in Springfield with his wife and children in 1930. He is not mentioned as a next-of-kin on his son's WWII draft registration, which instead lists Emily, so it is likely that Charles had died sometime before the draft in 1942.

2. William H. HOWE (William1), b. Feb. 1863, Perkiomenville, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. bef. 1930, prob. Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Married to Laura J. UNKNOWN (b. Jun. 1868, Pennsylvania; d. bef. 1920, prob. Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania) in 1898 at Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. Children of William H. HOWE and Laura J. UNKNOWN:

i. 3. Luella HOWE, b. May 1890, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. UK.

NOTES for William H. HOWE and Laura J. UNKNOWN: Records indicate that William and Laura had one other child, born between 1900-1910, that died in Norristown before 1910. William worked as a carpenter throughout his life, and owned a carpentry shop in Philadelphia in 1920. William is a widower in 1920, so Laura had died sometime between 1910-1920, probably in Norristown, but possibly in Philadelphia.

GENERATION THREE

3. Maurice Charles HOWE (Charles2, William1), b. 27 Sep. 1890 in Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. UK, poss. in Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts.

NOTES for Maurice Charles HOWE: Appears as both Maurice and Charles on various records. Maurice was still unmarried, at the age of 38, at the time of the 1930 census, and at the time of his draft in 1942, so it is possible that he never married or had children. A death record was found for a Maurice Charles HOWE in Florida, but it is uncertain if this is the same man. Maurice served in both World War I and World War II.

3. Pauline E. HOWE (Charles2, William1), b. 26 Jan. 1897 in Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. 9 May 1979 in Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts. Married to Unknown PHELPS (b. prob. abt. 1895; d. bef. 1920, either in Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania or Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts) abt. 1918 at either Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania or Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts. No children.

NOTES for Pauline E. HOWE: Pauline's marriage occurred sometime between 1910, when she is living with her parents, and 1920, when she is again living with her parents as a widow. It does not appear that she ever remarried or had children.

3. Luella HOWE (William2, William1), b. May 1890, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. aft. 1930, prob. Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.

NOTES for Luella HOWE: Luella last appears, at the age of 10, living with her parents in Norristown, PA, on the 1900 US Census. As her parents indicate that they have a living child on the 1910 census, it seems likely that Luella married sometime between 1900 and 1910. If there are any living descendants of William H. HOWE1, they would have most likely come from Luella and her husband.

It is possible that Luella HOWE married Norris Milton ELWELL (b. 27 Mar 1886, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. aft. 1930, prob. West Norriton, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; son of Edward E. ELWELL and Margaret J. UNKNOWN) about 1909 in Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. This couple had two children: Norris E. ELWELL (b. 26 Aug 1910, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. Dec 1981, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania) and Victoria L. ELWELL (b. abt. 1914, Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; d. UK). The marriage between Norris E. ELWELL and Luella HOWE needs to be confirmed.

If you think you are related to this family, or have more info, I would be happy to hear from you!

Maj. Church Howe Worcester MA, Sheffield, England

The following was published in the Worcester Daily Telegram on Tuesday, April 7, 1903 (obtained from microfilm at the Worcester Public Library):
____________________________________________________________

MAJ. HOWE GETS MEDAL.

Services at Critical Moment in American History Recognized.

Maj. Church Howe, United States consul in Sheffield, Eng., formerly a Worcester man, has just received a medal in recognition of his service at a critical moment in American history. When the Civil war broke out in 1861, Maj. Howe responded to President Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers, and several hours after the order was issued, Howe was with the 6th Massachusetts regiment on his way to Washington.

Recently the Massachusetts legislature granted medals for the minute men of 1861, and distributed them to eligible volunteers everywhere they could be found living. Now word comes in the latest issue of the Sheffield Daily Telegraph that Maj. Howe has received his medal.

The consul received a cordial letter from the assistant adjutant general of Massachusetts in which was said: -

"It is my especial privilege and pleasure to be the medium in placing the medal in the hands of a loyal soldier and representative of my country in a foreign land."

Maj. Howe was 19 years old when he enlisted.
____________________________________________________________

I have no further information about this person. I have posted this as an act of genealogical kindness. Good luck in your searches!

November 24, 1888 Page 3

George Woodward, of East Saginaw, is said to have struck Thomas Howe on the head with an axe cutting a hole that may cause his death. Woodward was the bartender in Tom Kern's gin mill and Howe was a carpenter who went there and got into a fuss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Sault Ste.
Joseph HOWE, wife Emma nee POLIQUIN Pawtucket, RHODE ISLAND 1900 - 1930

I'm researching our POLIQUIN branch. I am seeking the names of the parents for Emma POLIQUIN who was married to Joseph HOWE.

Thanks to the gap in records presented by the loss of both the 1890 federal census and the 1895 RI State census, I am having trouble finding her. I don't know if she died or married in that lost period of time between the 1881 Canadian census and the 1900 US census. The family arrived in the US & RI sometime between 1883 and 1885.

I have looked at all the repertoire/vital records from 1881 to 1886 for Notre-Dame-de-la-Victorie in Lévis, Quebec where the family was from and found no burial for her. Since there is no evidence of her death while the family was still in Quebec, I am going with the assumption that Emma was still alive when the family arrived in RI.

The Emma POLIQUIN I am looking for was b. 17 Apr 1873, Notre-Dame-de-la-Victorie, Lévis, Quebec. She was baptized with the name Marie Aimié Josephine POLIQUIN. She was the daughter of Benjamin POLIQUIN and Clarisse ROGER. On the 1881 Canadian census she appears as Ema.

Emma POLIQUIN doesn't appear on the 1900 RI census with her widowed father and her brothers. The last place I've found her is with her family on the 1881 Canadian census for Lévis, Quebec prior to coming to Rhode Island.

I've found in Ancestry's database, RI Marriages 1636 - 1930, a marriage of an Emma POLIQUIN (POLIKEN) to Joseph HOWE on 31 Oct 1899. Unfortunately the nature of this database is such that no names are given for the parents of either party in the marriage.

Emma and Joseph appear together on the 1900 census in Pawtucket, Providence Co, RI. They are just married, no children. Joseph HOWE is listed as being b.Aug 1874 in England. Arrival in the US - 1876 and a naturalized citizen. Occupation - engineer, plan shop.

Emma gives her birth as Feb. 1877, Canada French, no arrival year, no occupation. Her birth doesn't match the Emma I'm looking for but it wouldn't be the first time I've encountered conflicting information on a census so I am considering this Emma as a possible candidate for my Emma.

1910 census - Joseph and Emma are still in Pawtucket, RI. Joseph says he arrived in 1877 and is naturalized. He gives is occupation as engineer, wood mill. Emma says she is the mother of 4 children with 2 living. They have in their home a daughter Lilly 3y b. abt. 1907 and a son Arthur 1y 7mos b. abt. Sept. 1908.

1920 census - Joseph and Emma are now separated and living apart. Both are still in Pawtucket, RI.
Joseph is boarding, marital status still listed as married, says he arrived in the US 1874 & was naturalized in 1912. Lists his occupation as engineer, construction. With Joseph are sons Arthur 11y and Joseph 7y, no occupations for them.
Emma's entry finds her also a boarder, her marital status is given as married, she says she arrived in 1902 and is an alien; her occupation is worker, cotton mill.
Daughter Lilly, who would be about 17y at this point, is no where to be found.

1930 census - Both Joseph, Sr, and Joseph, Jr. can not be found. Son Arthur appears to have married and is living in Pawtucket, RI with wife Bertha E, a son Arthur J. 2y, *mos and daughter Virginia E. 1 mo. Arthur's occupation is rob***g, cotton mill.
Emma is still living in Pawtucket, RI in her own place; she gives her marital status as "D" - divorced, says she arrived in 1900 and is naturalized, her occupation is drawing tender, worstered mill.

Does anyone here on the HOWE board recognize the above individuals?

Are the Emma POLIQUIN who married Joseph HOWE and my Emma POLIQUIN born in Lévis, Quebec the same individual?

Does anyone have the names of the parents of Emma POLIQUIN who married Joseph HOWE?

Thanks for any and all help.

Thomas HOW(E) in Barrington and Rochester, NH

My g-g-g-g-grandfather was James HOWE, born 1771 in I think Barrington, NH. He married 1793 Mary BOODY, was in Barrington in 1800 census, Lebanon, NH in 1810 and then moved to Vermont.

His father was probably the Thomas HOWE, who enlisted 1777, age 44 in the Revolutionary War, served at least two enlistments, and died 15 Oct 1838 in Rochester, NH (according to his widow's Bounty Land application). I don't know who his first wife was, but he married 2) 1832, in Rochester (or Barrington) Mrs Betsy Nutter (same application).

I would like any more information on these people. I looked in the cemetery transcriptions for Rochester & Barrington, in NHGEN, but no Thomas HOW(E). Particularly I would like to find a gravestone for Thomas, find who was first wife, confirm age, etc.

Thanks

Howe - 1772, PA

I am looking for information on the ancestry
and family of Archibald Howe, born 1772 in
Washington County, PA. died in Wayne County,
OH 1827. It was reported he was a brother to
British General William Howe - I cannot find
reference to him anywhere. It was suggested
he may have been a cousin rather than a
brother.

Archibald Howe had 12 children, one of which
is Peter born 1805. He had 9 children one of
which was Hiram born 1839. Hiram had 5 children
of which one was Mary Catherine, born 1866.
She married Elias Acker and they had one
daughter - Maud.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Sharon
Winnie Howe of VA maried a Mr. Smith

According to several charts on RootsWeb World Connect, George Howe and Mary Landman had a daughter named Winnie Howe (born about 1752). She is shown to have married an unknown Mr. Smith and to have had children named Winnie Smith and Ann Smith.

There was a Mrs. Winnie Bennett in the Essex/Middlesex Co., VA area who had an apparent son named SMITH Bennett and a daughter named Mary Bennett (these children would have been born circa-1780s). The daughter named Mary Bennett married a John Brown in Middlesex Co., VA in 1805, and they had an apparent son named SMITH W. Brown (who may have been adopted, per DNA testing). A living male descendant of Smith W. Brown had his DNA tested, and he turned out to be a "blood Smith," not a "blood Brown." The Smith family that this descendant matches was also in the Essex/Middlesex Co., VA area (that Smith family had been in that area since the 1600s).

The Howes lived across the river from Essex Co., VA in Richmond Co., VA, and I can't help but wonder if the unknown Mr. Smith who married Miss Winnie Howe was from the same Smith family mentioned above. I also can't help but wonder if Miss Winnie Smith became Mrs. Winnie Bennett (note: the given name of Mr. Bennett is not known, but Smith Bennett named his first son William).

Does anyone have ANY additional information on Mrs. Winnie (Howe) Smith and/or her daughter Winnie Smith (the daughter named Winnie supposedly married someone somewhere in 1787, per a few of the charts on World Connect.....MAYBE she was the Winnie who married a Mr. Bennett). Thanks!

I am looking for information on John W. Howe (1813-1883)and his wife Caroline (1818-1890). They are both buried in the McIntosh Cemetery in Ward, Tioga, PA.

According to census records, they were living in Burlington, Bradford, PA in 1850, and in Ward, Tioga, PA in 1860 and 1870.

Children listed on the census records include Emily (b. abt. 1836), Judson (William J.)(b. abt. 1838), Scott (J. Scott)(b. abt. 1840), James H.(b. abt. 1843), and Sarah E.(b. abt. 1845).

I am a descendant of George Howe (b. 1861, Tioga Co., PA). George's parents were unknown, but handwritten notes handed down from the family indicate that he had siblings named Judson, Scott, and Sarah, and that he was raised by his sister Sarah. This information seems to fit with the family of John W. Howe of Bradford and Tioga Counties, PA, but I have not been able to find any records to indicate that George actually belongs to this family.

Please contact me if you have any information concerning this family and a connection to George Howe.

Thank you

"Mr. Ezra Howe, an old gentleman over sixty years of age, a resident in the town of Wheaton for a considerable period, died very suddenly last night at about the hour of nine o'clock. The cause of his mysterious and unexpected taking off is quite a mystery, except for the supposition that the breaking of an abscess in the lungs may have been the occasion. Mr. Howe had been a resident of Mondovi for some time, and is well known in this city."

"Sudden Death," Eau Claire (WI) Weekly Free Press, 22 Dec. 1881, p. 3.

A Howe family were colonists at the Lost colony, in 1587. Are you descended from them?

First the Lost colony project is a non profit Organization.

From the Administrator of the Project:

Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is
Roberta Estes and I’m the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for
Science and Research. (_www.lost-colony.com_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/) )
Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists.
For those of you who don’t know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here’s
a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men,
women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the
New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists
were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like
gold.
In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in
present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food
supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back
to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring
of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy,
impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval
service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included
his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke
Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists
had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The
Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John’s departure, he
had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress.
There were no crosses.
John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists.
Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived
and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if
so, who are they today?
In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent
archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did
survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of
those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent
advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the
mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to
solve the mystery. However, we can’t do this alone. We need the help of the
families who have been identified as “families of interest”, being either
roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the
original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.
In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested,
we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept.
7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be
held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at
_http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html_
(http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html) .
Given that your surname is one of those on our “Names of Interest” list, I
hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping
from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to
achieve the following:
1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular
surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings, requests and
research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC
(or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage,
are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones,
etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing,
and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for
your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing
that avenue.
To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project,
please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the
Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your
pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help
you with your testing plan.
If you can’t attend the conference, you can still join the project.
Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website.
We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members
only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is
being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as
well.
If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please
contact me at _restes@comcast.net_ (mailto:restes@comcast.net) .

Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html
The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

I will be on vacation from now until July 24th. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colonial Counterfeiter Joshua Howe
Joshua Howe and Doctor Seth Hudson were Colonial Counterfeiters and were convicted, fined and punished in Boston in 1762. While searching in Google Books, I found reference to a book "United States Criminal History-Being a True Account of the Most Horrid Murders, Piracies, etc." and on page 37 it mentioned that Joshua and Seth were brothers-in-law. Now I am trying to determine how they are related...thru wives, sisters, brothers, etc. I believe the Joshua Howe mentioned was born 11 October 1716 in Sudbury and died in 1806 in Wells, VT. Dr. Seth had a son, Seth, who was appointed a guardian to a Silvanus Howe of Petersham when Seth was 14 years of age. Perhaps Joshua and Silvanus were related? If any Howe or Hudson researcher have any information to share, will very much appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.
Erastus HOWE Biography, b. 1829 NY to WI
From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 856 - 857.
Town of Barre
ERASTUS HOWE was born June 22, 1829, in the town of Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N. Y. When 4 years old, his mother died, and when he was 8 years old, his father married again. He lived with his father until he was 22 years old, then started in the world for himself. Was married to Mary Jane Burton Oct. 12, 1851; then worked for her father the first winter, and in the spring of 1852 bought 25 acres of timber land, and cut away the brush. His wife, then his only helper, burnt the brush, and in a few days they had a spot ready to build a big shanty in the hemlock timber; cleared 2 acres the first year. In the fall built a comfortable house, with four rooms, and battled on with the old hemlocks. On Feb. 27, 1854, welcomed their first addition to the family. When hearing so much of the Western prairies, they concluded to sell their land, and, with $230, started, April 17, 1855, and landed in La Crosse on the 27th of April, and had $140 left; lost their trunk, and was obliged to use some of the money to buy soom goods before they left town. Then started for La Crosse Valley; in the town of Barre, found a piece of land and bought it. It had a shanty, 10x12, and it was covered with basswood bark, and when it rained, the streams were larger indoors than out. In this they lived till fall; their furniture was a couple of benches made of slabs, and their first table was a stable door, and many a day it was surrounded with new friends to eat the wild game, for they had plenty of that, and they all seemed to enjoy their new home. They had only a few neighbors, and they were of the best. Bull snakes were the only visitors they did not like. Sept. 13, 1855, the oldest daughter was born, and a terrible rain set in, and day after day there was not a dry place in the shanty to lay down, and all that could be done was to sit up and catch the water in dishes. Mr. Howe says: "This is what I called hard times. I had not one dime to fix the shanty; I could not get more than one day's work in a week, and then go four or five miles to get that." That same fall, he cut timber of his own, and built a good log shanty, and made shakes, and covered it, and then added more furniture, and, as Mr. Howe says: "After we had settled in our new shanty, we felt richer than to day in a brick house, and plenty of furniture and all the comforts of life. We could see now and then three or four deer at a time cross from one place of timber to the other; wolves were plenty; if we had fresh meat they knew it, and would get up a great howl, but a couple of rifle-shots would give us peace for awhile." At this time he had no team, but he used his neighbor, Martin Allen's. After struggling along with no team, no tools, and paying 12 per cent on borrowed money, he obtained a loan of Robert Smith, and bought an ox team. He then took 30 acres of land about four miles from his home to work on shares; then paid Mr. Smith, and commenced work on his own land. He hewed out timber, built a barn, hog-pen and corn crib, and then built a good house. Lived six years on this farm, then I bought 38 acres in Bostwick Valley, and moved there. Rented his old farm two years, sold it, and bought 80 acres of land and 40 acres of timber, adjoining the 38. Here they lived eleven years, then moved to West Salem; went in partnership with Robert Rand for one year, making bricks; then went to Sparta, and bought 20 acres, and a brick-yard on it; carried on the brick business for seven years, and in this time purchased a good brick house and lot in the city of Sparta; then purchased 30 acres in the limits of the city, also another 78 acres, and has 2 acres in the city of La Crosse, bought in the fall of 1880; moved back on the farm in Bostwick Valley, where he now lives.
[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]
I was told my lineage comes from Edward and Elizabeth Howe who arrived in the new world in the 1600's.
I have traced my family back to a John Howe whom married a Harriet Carpenter in New York. This family is shown in the 1850 Jefferson county census living in Wilna with 3 children.In 1860 Harriet is living with her father in antwerp with 2 small children both who were born in Antwerp, Two of the others are living with her brother E. A. Carpenter in antwerp.
The Carpenter family moved to Antwerp from Montgomery county New York.
Does anyone have any information that can help me in my research.
thank you
Bernard Howe
Also is there a DNA group going on the Howe line?
HOWE, Theodore b. 20 Aug 1887 NY married Martha DEBOW of NY
I'm looking for information on Theodore HOWE who married Martha DEBOW sometime between 1910 and 1920 somewhere in New York.
I can't find a Theodore in 1910 with a birth year of about 1887 but Martha is located living with her mother Alice DEBOW, widow, and her sister Minnie DEBOW in Brooklyn at 351 Pacific Ave.
By 1920 Theodore and Martha have married. Where and when the marriage took place, whether in Brooklyn or Port Jervis is unknown.
But, they are living in Port Jervis, Orange Co, New York in 1920. Theodore is a fireman with the Erie Railroad and Martha runs a boarding house on East Main St. where the couple also reside. Living with them are Martha's mother Alice DEBOW who has remarried to a man named Samuel SMITH. They are listed as mother-in-law and father-in-law to Theodore who is the head of the household.
In 1930, Theodore and Martha are still in Port Jervis but now on Franklin St. Theodore's occupation is listed as fireman, railroad. Also in Theodore and Martha's household are Martha's mother, Alice DEBOW~SMITH, once again widowed and Martha's sister Grace A. LAMBERT, also a widow, and Grace's son Albert LAMBERT.
Theodore's WW I Draft Card states his birth date as 20 Aug 1887. Since I downloaded Ancestry's enhanced viewer, I haven't been able to view the WW I Draft Card images; I can only access the text portion of the results. So I don't know what Theodore might have given for his place of birth or his nearest relative.
It appears that Theodore and Martha had no children unless some were born after the 1930 census which seems remote given that Martha was age 40y on the 1930 census.
Hopefully, I would like to learn the following: The names of Theodore's parents and any siblings. Where in New York Theodore was born and his family lived. When and where Theodore and Martha married. Any children that may have been born to them post 1930. When Theodore and Martha died and where they might be buried.
Thanks, I know this is a big request but any little bit of information could help lead me to the rest of what I'm searching for.
Warren Lewis Howe - Julia Ward Howe Relation?
I am looking for the names of the parents of Warren Lewis Howe, my great-grandfather. I have been told that I'm a descendant of Julia Ward Howe, so I'm trying to figure out the lineage. Warren would have been born anytime between 1860-1890. I'm hoping that he is the son of Henry Marion Howe, who is the only surviving son of Julia Ward Howe and Samuel Gridley Howe. I know that Julia and Samuel were in Boston, but no idea where Warren Lewis Howe was born. His son, Warren L. Howe JR resided in Portland, OR.
Please let me know if you have any information! THANKS!!!!
