I am trying to find the link between John Howland 1481-1550 and Harriet Howland born 1784. My father was Arthur Howland Jackson and I was always told that Howland was an important family name so have been trying to establish this branch of my family tree. I know that some of the Howlands sailed to America but assume some must have stayed in England. From what I can find Harriet was born in Cantebury

Hi,
Wow, you bringing up Mary Jane brought back a few memories. Nikki, her sister, my mother, had given me a photo album once when we had reunited and there were several pictures of Mary Jane in there. I didn't know she was an artist.
Maybe we can correspond through email, if that is alright, since some of this is personal regarding addresses for mailings. I don't know where Mary Jane is, but I do know Nikki's address and I know she will love to receive it.
Thank you so much for all the time you took to help me out.
Tammy
MYSTERS190@aol.com
Tammy, I am so glad to find your posting on this message board. I have been researching your family on Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com, hoping to find some path to contacting your Aunt Mary Jane. I would like to return a portrait that she once had done for my brother around 1966. It's lovely portrait done in light oils and it belongs with her or a family member rather than stored in my closet. I look forward to any information that you might provide that will allow me to see this portrait safely home. I must tell you that I did search for your brother Robert M Howland, but didn't find any links to him other than his birth record. Sorry!

First of all let me say, I have found a lot of misinformation about this line in several family trees on the internet. BE VERY CAREFUL IN WHAT INFO YOU GET. I try and not use anything that I have not verified first. We can all pool our info and share what we have. I do try and make comments on different sites when I find the info is wrong. Hopefully if someone else sees it they just won't take it for their tree. I have collected documents, obits and pictures when I can. Will be willing to share and hope you will too. Some of you I have been in contact with but would love to hear from others. June

Re: Mayflower John Howland

John Howland was quite a guy. He signed on to the Mayflower as a servant of the first governor of the Plymouth colony. He is recorded by Governor Bradford as the 13th signer of the Mayflower compact, the actual order is lost to history. After Governor Carver and family died during the first winter at Plymouth, his obligations as "servant" were satisfied and he became a significant member of the Plymouth community.

He was present during the first indian fight when the Pilgrims were exploring the coast for the place for them the establish their colony. He would have been familiar with firing a matchlock musket and have trained with a sword.

John also attended the first Thanksgiving, a meal cooked by the surviving 4 adult women in the colony. Elizabeth Tilley was likely one of the older teenage girls left alive after the first winter. IT must have been quite a time.

Unfortunately, without further information, it is going to be very difficult to assist you. Location of your ancestors, dates that they lived, will help others match up to the family line. John Howland has many hunderes of thousands of living descendants at this point. There are somewhere between 11 and 15 generations between you and John so there are many lines to follow down. The 1850 US census is the first to name all family members. The last currently available US census is 1930. Many of John's lines have been traced down to 1850. If you can be more specific on your lines from 1930 back, someone is likely to be able to get a link going back further.

Roger
