The NEHGS record states that his parents are James and Mary and that he was born in Ireland - no specific place in Ireland mentioned. Most of the Irish entries are like this too.

He died of Typhoid Fever, 3 weeks at age 45 at City Hospital. His occupation was Blacksmith. He was married.

Hi Sherry
I see your posting for information was back in 2001. I have recently begun to look at my ancestry . My great-great grandfather was also Michael Patrick Howlett. I beleive he was born around 1848 and came to the Us in the 1860's. He was from New Ross Ireland and had a dredging and shipping business in Philadelphia. I am looking for information on his marriages and children. My great grandmother was Catherine Agnes Howlett. She married Joseph A. Wilson. I beleived they in near Camden, NJ. They had 11 children. Their oldest was my grandmother Mary Margaret Wilson, who married John Robinson. They lived in Philadelphia and had 5 children. The Howletts, Wilsons and Robinsons had regular family reunions in NJ. I have additional information. Hopefully, you have had some success in your search. I would like to chat further. Sincerely, Joe Robinson

My Hurrell was a typing mistake and should be Murrell.
Re the disability, I would not take that as definite and there is probably no way of finding out. I wonder it is purely a cross making a spot on the page or for some other reason.1901 Census has Alfred Goddard 37 Navy b/Brighton,
Caroline Goddard 27 b/Brighton,Winifred Goddard 6 b/Brighton & Florence N 3 b/brighton. They may have just shown Brighton for all,and I have not checked FreeBMD
to find out if Brighton was their birth place.
Note Winifred was born before marriage, wonder if Alfred was mrd previously.
1911 Census shows their address as Romford, Essex. If you do not have Ancestry wonder if you will have access at your local library, our Library has paid for Ancestry.
were you aware of Winifred, and if not might be worthwhile
checking for any mge/family which you might be able to locate.
Assume they may not always show deceased.
Will let you know if there is anything I would like.
John
Hi John, Thanks again for the info you sent, much appreciated. It's no wonder I could not find the family on 1881 census, because of the error, in the spelling of the name, again, so thanks for finding that. As Samuel was on CAROLINE HOWLETTs marriage cert, in 1897,(and does not say "deceased"), he must have been alive then. But do they always quote "deceased", not sure on that one, do you know? I also came across CAROLINE HOWLETT, working as a servant in Reigate, in 1891, but under the disability section it has a cross besides her name. I'm thinking, surely she could not be disabled, if working and had children later on in life. Do you know if a cross means a disability? It's making me very curious, on this one. Have you found any further info on your Samuel, from Hunts? If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for your help. Joan Harvey, from Erith, Kent.

Hi John, many thanks for replying. Yes it is confusing, "does your head in", but it makes you more determined, to find out more!! I think it is the bad writing on census papers, that does it. There are HOWLETT, HEWLETT, HOWELL etc. Also MURRELL, you have quoted HURRELL. But on my gt grandmothers birth cert, CAROLINE HOWLETT, born 26 May 1874, West Street, Redhill, Reigate, Surrey, it has her father as SAMUEL HOWLETT, a farm labourer, and mother (under the maiden name section) Eliza Howlett, formerly, Murrell. On CAROLINE HOWLETTs marriage cert (married ALFRED GODDARD, 17 Mar 1897, Brighton, Sussex), her father SAMUEL HOWLETT is a general a labourer. Thanks again for the info on Samuel and Eliza, which I did not have. It is a great help. I am sure our Samuels are different, because of him (I think), coming from Woolpit, Suffolk, and your Samuel from Hunts. But, you never know, could be long lost cousins, maybe!!!
Joan Harvey (nee Hands) from Erith, Kent.

Again Isay your Howletts are most confusing.
Found an Eliza Hurrell b Dec 1844 Richmond Surrey, do not know if that is her.
1871 Census shows Samuel Howlett 31 b/Wolpet, Suffolk
Eliza 24 b Thackham, Surrey, Mary Ann 5 (b Sep qtr 1865 Reigate,George 3 (b/Dec qtr 1867 Reigate, John 1 (b dec qtr 1869 Reigate, and Caroline is born after 1871 in Sept qtr 1874 Reigate.
1881 Census shows them by mistake as Hamlett with
George 39 Laborer b Woolpit,Eliza 37 b/Golstone,Mary Ann
15 b/Earlswood Surrey(Dom Servant), George 13 b/Redhill Surrey (Errand Boy),John 11 b/Redhill,Surrey.
1891 Census shows a Caroline Howlett 16 servant for Molin Family in Reigate b/Redhill, Surrey. Do not know what happened to Samuel & Eliza.
1901 Census shows an Eliza Howlett mrd 52 Charwoman b/Redhill, Surrey living Reigate also with her an Agnes Murrell niece aged 10. Do not know where Samuel was.

Thats about all I can give you.

John
Caroline 6 b/Redhill

Hi Many thanks for your reply. Yes we have different Samuels, but you never know they may be distant cousins somewhere down the line. I also came across the marriage of Samuel to Eliza Slow. On my gt grandmothers birth cert, it has Eliza Murrell as her mother, (under mothers maiden name) But do you think this could be her single name, then she had been married before Samuel, so Slow would be her first married name. Can be very confusing, at times, and frustrating. Also thanks for the info on Caroline Howletts brothers, I did not have this info. Was this from the census records of 1871. I would be very grateful for any other help you may have, as I am quite new to geneology. Many thanks once again.
Joan Harvey (nee Hands) from Erith, Kent, England

Hi
Thanks for your reply, and it appears that we have two different Samuel Howletts. I have Samuel b say 1857 Gt.Staughton mrd 1881Dist Pancras, London to Mary Ellen Sleep and I know of 3 children Archibald 1882 Gertrude 1884 & Bernard 1886.

Re your Samuel b c 1841 mrd Eliza Murrell and no mge cert, it is interesting that a Samuel Howlett mrd Dec qtr 1864 Reigate to an Eliza Slow which fits in timewise to Caroline b c 1874 & her brothers ? Howlett b c 1865, George b c 1867 & John b c 1869. I assume your name Murrell is correct, however thought it worth mentioning the Slow marriage.
Wish you luck with your research.
Hi, My gt gt grandfather is Samuel Howlett, not sure if we are connected. His daughter, is my gt grandmother, Caroline Howlett,(b.1874-1960), born Redhill, Reigate, Surrey. She married Alfred Goddard on 17 March 1897, in Brighton Sussex. Their daughter, Florence Nellie Hubbard (nee Goddard) (b.1898-1987), is my maternal grandmother. I have Caroline Howletts birth cert. and marriage cert. It has Samuel Howlett as her father and her mother is Eliza Murrell. But I cannot find a marriage cert for Samuel and Eliza, been searching but, no luck as yet. Do you know any more about Samuel Howlett, as I haven't got any further back than this. I would appreciate it, if you have any info.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Joan Harvey (nee Hands) from Erith, Kent
A little further investigation shows that there may be a number of John Howletts of about the same age. On the 1891 Census there was the John Howlett age 37 in Wood Dalling (b. Bunwell) with wife Georgianna and son Ernest (2), but also a John Howlett age 35 in Bunwell, also with wife Georgianna and son Ernest (12) - as well as a John Howlett (35) in Carleton Rode, living with his father George Howlett.
On the 1861 Census there was:
John Howlett, s. George & Sarah of Carleton Rode, 5, b. Carleton Rode
John Howlett, grandson of John of Bunwell (65), age 5, b. Bunwell
John Howlett, s. of William of Wymondham, age 12, b. Bunwell.
In some cases, one man may have been listed twice - but I think you will need to do some careful documentation to sort these people.

The 1891 Census shows in Wood Dalling, Norfolk an Ernest Howlett, aged 2, born Wood Dalling, as son of John Howlett, an agricultural labourer, aged 37, b. Bunwell, Norf. John had a wife Georgiana (37, b. Carleton Rode), and elder children Alice (13, b. Bunwell), Water(12, b. Bunwell), Arthur (9, b. Bunwell), William (6, b. Bunwell), and John (4, b. Hardwick). Bunwell and Carleton Rode are adjacent, just south of Wymondham. The father might be the John Howlett shown on the 1871 Census in Carleton Rode as aged 14, b. Carleton Rode, as son of George Howlett (51, b. Pulham Market) who had wife Sarah. Is this your line?

Clarifications: I have now determined that Riches Howlett was the son of Thomas Howlett bp. 27 Jan. 1718 N. Tuddenham, lived in Hingham, but bur. N. Tuddenham 2 Sep. 1792, who married (second) in Hackford 2 Jul. 1746 Elizabeth Parke. Riches Howlett seems to have been named for Riches Parke, who may have been Elizabeth's father.

Yaxham is next to Mattishall. The Howletts were a numerous and important yeoman family (that is, they owned land, but were not landed gentry) in Mattishall and North Tuddenham since at least the 16th century. I have a lot of information on some branches of the family and would be glad to help as you get back further.

Sorry, I don't know your Thomas' parentage. The 1851 and 1861 Censuses of Yaxham show that he was born in Billingford, Norfolk. There are two Billingfords in Norfolk. One, referred to as "Near East Dereham", is a few parishes northwest of North Tuddenham and Mattishall. The other is near Diss. The first seems most likely for Yaxham. Unfortunately, neither has been extracted past 1812 on FreeReg. Thomas was one of the most popular given names in the North Tuddenham branch of the family (going back to a Thomas Howlett who left a will in 1607), so a connection there might be a good bet. Have you examined the Billingford parish registers? Billingford extracts through 1812 don't show any Howlett baptisms in the 19th century, so the family may have been only briefly there.

I have invited you to my Ancestry family tree as that might be useful to you.
Good luck in the UK, I plan to do it one day myself. I would be interested to see how you go (I originally thought you were in the UK!).
Have fun with your research and if there is anything else I can help you with please let me know.
Right then what would you like to know? I don't yet know what happened to Matthew Howlett. I think he may have died early on as I have found a Mrs Sarah Howlett living by herself in Perth until 1933 (WA PO Directories).
Ellen Mary Howlett had a child in 1886, Victor Hugh Howlett(illegitimate - my g grandfather) at 18yo. She married in 1886 to Victor's father Patrick Murphy (Victor then became Victor HH Murphy)in Irishtown, Northam, Western Australia, Australia. They went on to have another 6 children - Edward Basil b. 1887 Northam. Rose Alma b. 1897 Southern Cross, WA. Lily Gertrude b 1890 d.1891 Yilgarn (Southern Cross) WA. Norman Felix b. 1892 Southern Cross WA. Grace Ethel Rose b. 1895 Southern Cross WA. Patrick John b.16/8/1899 d. 13/09/1899. Ellen Mary died in childbirth 16/08/1899. Ellen and Patrick John are buried in the Southern Cross Cemetery Anglican Grave #3. Patrick Murphy died in Oct 1900 from a blasting accident at Calooli (4 miles west of Coolgardie) leaving the remaining children orphaned. I think the orphans must have gone to Perth and were raised by Patrick's parents, Ann and Felix Murphy. During the time that Ellen lived in Southern Cross there was very little water or infrastructure and there was a lot of typhoid. Lily Gertrude may have succumbed to typhoid but I am yet to prove this. I have been researching Ellen and Patrick the most so far and so far I haven't investigated properly the rest of the Howlett children in depth but I can tell you that Moss Rose married William Maxwell in 1900 in Perth. She had 3 children: Leslie John Maxwell b. 1900, Lillian Beatrice Maxwell b. 1903, Nellie Maxwell b. 1905. Ernest Thomas married Isabella Margaret Wicks in 1901 in Perth. They had 2/3 children. Gladys Isabel Howlett b. 1905, James Rueben Wicks Howlett b. 1903, ?Pearl Elizabeth. He died 20/10/1961 at Leederville WA at 89yo. He is buried at Karrakatta cemetery. Maurice Frederick Howlett m. Udy Eliza Claremont in 1879 in Sussex. They had 2 children Henry Maurice Howlett b. 1899 Busselton WA and Rose Sarah Cracknell Howlett b. 1903 Sussex. He died in Collie WA 1963 and is buried at Karrakatta cemetery. Arthur Edward Howlett died 8/8/1953 at 83yo at Victoria Park WA and is buried at Karrakatta cemetery.
I hope this helps your research. I can put you on to some websites in Perth that may help you further. They are free.
Births Deaths and Marriages: www.justice.wa.gov.au
Post Office Directories: www.slwa.wa.gov.au
Cemeteries: www.ozgenonline.com.
Now I would like something from you! Can you fill me on the ascendents of Mathew and Sarah?
Kind Regards
Sue

She married Mathew and both were born about 1843 and the other names are the names of their children (Ellen, Maurice, Moss Rose, Arthur Edward and Ernest Thomas).
I don't have any photos to compare them with either, but if any of these names match up I would certainly love to have a look

Was Eveline A. Howlett born in Massachusetts about 1859 / 1860 ?

I have the birth certificate of William Augustus Slater, b. 20 Nov. 1887 in Killingly, Connecticut. William Augustus Slater's father is listed as William (S. ?) Slater, age 45, born in Killingly, CT - farmer. William Augustus Slater's mother is listed as Eveline (middle name LOOKS LIKE Alwjlder) Howlett, age 28, born in Foster, Rhode Island.

Number of child is listed as "3", so William Augustus Slater has siblings.

I, also have the Marriage License for William A. Slater - age 18 at time of marriage - (married Alice E. Keach - age 17 at time of marriage) and the name of his mother is "Eveline" NO MAIDEN NAME, birthplace of mother is, "Mass." The name of William A. Slater's father (on his marriage license) is William A. Slater, birthplace of father is, "Mass." Alice E. Keach and William A. Slater were married on 3 June 1905 in Danielson, Connecticut.

I believe that the William A. Slater that married Alice E. Keach is the same William Augustus Slater that was born on 20 Nov. 1887. Since Alice E. Keach is my Great Grandfather's sister, I am seeking information to verify this - particularly looking for info about William A. Slater's mother, Eveline A. Howlett.

There are quite a few William Slaters' and I think that by concentrating on Eveline A. Howlett I can find some answers.

am researching George Edward HOWLETT who married Sarah Ann MEAD in 1903 in Kilburn, London. George & Sarah had 2 children and eventually moved back to Norfolk to settle.

Do these Howletts fit in with your family? I am curious as my family are also Howletts from suffolk. I am not convinced that they didnt originally come from outer space as all was well in the tracing until suddently nothing... no trace at all. I got as far as JOhn Howlett Married Clarentinna Crumpthorn!! in Norwich. (I mean I ask you is that an earthly name?)

Regards Wendy

Hi Sue. Mathew was the eldest of Thomas (abt1819-1874) and Sarah (nee Hornigold 1821). Mathew 1843, Phebe 1846, Jane 1849, Francis 1851, Frederick 1853, Ellen 1857, Shephard Thos 1859, George D 1861, Cara 1864 and Edward 1866. Thomas was a coal and corn merchant employing 8 men. On his death Frederick became the Head of the house and business. May be the reason why Mathew decided to leave for Australia. Thats as much as I have, but I'm heading to UK soon and plan a trip to Norich and Yaxham.
Mathew's son Ernest Thomas Howlett (my great grandfather) married Isabell Margaret Wicks. Ernest was an Engine driver and lived in Leederville WA. They had 4 children; Gladys Isobella, Hazel Irene, James Reuben Wicks and the youngest Thomas Howlett 1910-1997 (my grandfather). Thomas married Kathleen Rose Jecks 1910-1997. The Jecks trace back to the first settlers for the Swan River Colony Perth in 1829. Thomas and Kathleen had 3 children; Ernest John (my father), Patricia and Alan.
Mathew's eldest son Arthur 1871-08 Aug 1953 was a labourer and casual hand until he was admitted as a blind inmate to the Society for the blind in Victoria Park WA.
I hope this has helped. I've only just started tracing my family tree and appreciate your help.
Regards
Tracie

Re: Irish connections to Howletts

Thanks for inquiring about Nova Scotia Howletts. My family came to N.S. from Boston in late 1800's (originally from Ireland) After my great grandfather Michael Howlett died, his wife brought their 2 sons Joseph (my grandfather) and his brother Jim to Halifax. They settled in Wellington, N.S. where my grandfather was a CN telegrapher. Margaret was one of Joseph's daughters as was my father, George. Many of my Howett uncles, cousins as did my father worked as telegraphers.
I am afraid I know of no connections to Howletts in Guysborough county.

Justin

My name is Mark Howlett. My grandfather Harry came to Australia in 1949. All the relatives I have tracked down so far are from south London (Lambeth, Bermondsey, Rotherhithe) and most were lightermen/watermen on the wharves. Would be interested to know whether there was any connection between us.

South London Howletts

My grandfather Harry Howlett came to Australia in 1949. He lived in Rotherhithe, south London and worked on the wharves as a lighterman. I have traced my family back to about 1809 and it seems that they were all lightermen/watermen living in south London (Lambeth, Bermondsey, Rotherhithe).

Would love to hear from any Howletts or related families to see if we have connections.

Re: Was Eveline A. Howlett born in Massachusetts about 1859 / 1860 ?

The 1880 census has a William and Evaline, along with daughters Helen and Evalina living in Killingly. William works on a farm, was born in RI, and his father was born Ct, but mother born in RI. Evaline and her parents were born in RI.They appear on the census page right after 71 year old Brayton Slater, born in CT, and what appears to be his (other?)children Helen, Susan and David.

In 1900, William and William Jr are living together in Killingly. Father is a widower; son dob is listed as Nov 1888. William Jr is listed as born in CT, as was his mother. Father is listed as born in RI.

In 1910, the father has a new wife, Gertrude, and the likely son is married to Alice with a daughter Beatrice.

I did not find a birth record for an Eveline Howlett in MA. I would probably believe the 1880 Census record, which showed Evaline as 20 years old.

I suspect this is her in 1870. Unfortunately the relationships are not included back then.

1870 United States Federal Census
about Evelina A Howlett
Name: Evelina A Howlett
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Age in 1870: 10
Birthplace: Rhode Island
Home in 1870: Killingly, Windham, Connecticut
Race: White
Gender: Female
Value of real estate: View Image
Post Office: West Killingly
Household Members:
Name Age
Willis H Shipper 48
Laura Shipper 32
Willis H Shipper 5
Leonora L Shipper 3
Lebbens Graves 57
Evelina A Howlett 10

Good luck.
John

The letter was written by a Sarah. I will have to dig out the letter and the photos again. Most of them are not labeled and I am trying to find out who is in them. I will try to scan them and post them and maybe you will recognize someone. Do you have any pictures...maybe we can match them up. I haven't spent much time lately doing research.
