Mike,
I am a descendant of W.R. Howsley's son W.D. Howsley. I recently found out that W.R. had two wives. Margaret Ann Taylor, the first wife, was W. D.'s mother. If you have any information on W. R. Howsley previous to this I would sure appreciate some help and can give you info that I have. Thank you. Carolynne

I have been told that W.R. was raised by his uncles, both Howsleys, but can't find anything to substantiate that. W.R. came to Texas to visit his sons about 1896,( letter to Albany News). Did you find that he moved to Texas? Nice to meet ya, Cuz.

Ruth White Howsley Yorkshire>Lafayette Co Wisconsin>Sutter Co CA

Ruth White Howsley was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret March White who immigrated from Yorkshire to Lafayette County WI in 1845. Ruth married first William Howsley with whom she moved to Gold Hill Nevada. After the death of William, Ruth Howsley moved to Sutter County CA where she married William's brother George. Ruth White Howsley has a large number of descendents--many still in the Sutter County area.

I have collected information for over 25 years about the family of Thomas and Margaret White who immigrated to White Oak Springs in Lafayette County, Wisconsin in 1845 from the North Riding of Yorkshire. I have finally managed to get it organized into a website. Included in the website is a summary of what is known about the ancestors of Thomas and Margaret and a bit about their descendents along with scans of photographs and family documents and some anecdotes about family members and/or events.

The introductory page to the website can be seen at
http://www.contexo.info/Thomas&MargaretWhite/index.html From there you will find links to the other pages.

Of special interest to a more general audience are transcripts of a set of letters to Thomas and Margaret White in England from Margaret’s parents George and Sarah March who had already settled in Wisconsin. The letters contain some details of their daily life in the early 1840’s and some very interesting instructions from Sarah to her daughter about what to bring on the trip to America.

Those transcripts can be found at http://www.contexo.info/Thomas&MargaretWhite/George&...

(The URL ends in Marchletters.htm.)

I hope the site will be of interest and enjoyment to all.

Nancy White Custer
From what I was told by my uncle a few years ago, the difference in the names, ie Howsley & Housley came around in the 1600s in England. Apparently, there were two brothers (details as yet still unknown), who had an almighty breakup. To dis-associate himself from the other, one of the brothers changed his name from Howsley to Housley. This has still to be proven, and could take quite a while.

Hello Richard,

My name is Jennifer Howsley, and I am currently looking for information concerning some of the American Howsleys. Any hope of obtaining information from your compilations or do they only concern the UK?

Thanks!!!!!!

Sorry for the delay, I've had a full computer re-build. We are building up the family tree here in the UK. As far as we know, although not 100% confirmed yet, is that all Howsley's around the world are related one way or another. We have some branches of the tree that go back to the 1600's in Derbyshire, UK, but further details from then are very vague. A Howsley (my great great uncle) emigrated to Australia in the early 1900's. Searches there are not very forthcoming. I hope this helps. Regards..... RIchard
