Re: William Hoxie, son of Samson Hoxie

I would like to update this record. Samson Hoxie was actually Lawson Hoxie. Lawson married Mary Jane Lovell in 1859 in Hastings County, Ontario. They lived in the Belleville area. They had at least one son named William who was born in 1863, served in the US Cavalry at Fort Walla Walla. William was a blacksmith, who moved to the Helena Montana area in 1888-9 where he married Mina Lundberg from Sweden. He appears to have left soon after his first child was born. I don't have any other information on him until July of 1922 when he travels across the border to Canada. In the Immigration document he says he lived in White Pigeon, Michigan. I would love to talk to anyone who may be a descendent of William or Lawson

Caryn-

These Hoxies are the last family to own the famous Hoxie House (17th century) on Shawme Pond in Sandwich Center.

Abraham Hoxie and the Pinkhams of Nantucket are somehow connected. The present day Cunninghams (of whom there are many) live largely in and around the Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts area. Indeed John Franklin Cunningham the fouth is in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

You will find the this line thoroughly researched in THE PERRY GENEALOGY available from the Bourne Historical Society in Bourne, Massachusetts.

Hope this is helpful.

Any living relatives/desendants of Paul Preston Hoxie and Nora

Rather than going too deep with family lines, I am inquiring of any relative of mine from the Paul Preston Hoxie and Nora(h) [Washburn] Hoxie family line. Paul is the son of Allen and Gulielma Preston Hoxie (she is misnomered in a few publications as 'Julie', but is really Gulie!) Paul married Nora Washburn and had five children...Allan [skipper of the Milwaukee Clipper], Dae (a V/P at Kirsch, Inc. in Sturgis, MI), Gulielma [my grandmother Miller] and Mae C. (who married a Robert Payne, a very distinguished accountant for the Scudder firm)...with the passing of a number of my relatives, I have had no contact with anyone from the Hoxie line...in fact, my family has not one picture we can get our hands on of Paul/Nora or the family as a whole.
Normally, in the past, I as many of you have asked to 'go backwards' to find more of our roots...but here I am just trying to get a handle on a relativly recent piece of my family history. If you are a niece/nephew or grandchild of any of the above named Hoxie's, or even an offshoot thereof, please contact me with any information you might have on this branch of the Hoxie family, it would help our family immensley. Thank you for listening and I hope you can help. JAM/a fellow Hoxie

Re: "The Hoxie Family, Three Centuries in America"

I am quite certain this is the book I read (my mother's) when I was a child (late 50s). It began with Ludwig (Lodowick) in Sandwich MA in I believe 1643.

The story is that Lodowick was a sash-maker and he took the contract to make the doors and windows for the Quaker meeting house and was arrested, because at that time - mid 1600s (at least in that locale) it was illegal to associate with Quakers - although they were tolerated. He spent a week in the hoosegow and was fined L4. When he was set free he joined the Quaker church - which is how the Hoxies became Quakers. I read a different story somewhere on here but along similar lines.

However, if he was living in Holland (from whence he sailed) the Hoxies may have been Quakers before coming to America; or perhaps Dissenters/Separatists -
so-called "Pilgrims" - as they went to live in Holland to escape persecution. Just an idea....

If we all descended from this one person, somebody(s) must have had a large family of sons in at least ONE generation as there seems to be a lot of us descended from Lodowick.

Anybody have any ideas about any of this?

Eli Goldsmith

PS: My Great-grandfather was C.D. Hoxie of Concord, MI who was descended from Ludwig (as he is called in our family)

Re: Captain Hoxie, b abt. 1840 (m) Zelia Ingersoll?

The only "Captain" Hoxie I know of was John Hoxie, a Texas Ranger probably born about this time. (??) Captain is a rank in the Texas Rangers. Family history says he went to Nome, Alaska (from Texas?) during the Yukon gold rush and owned a saloon with Wyatt Earp (1898?)

My mother (Doris Pomeroy - mother was Florida Hoxie whose father was C.D. Hoxie of Concord, MI) said he was her Great-uncle. I also think he was the one that she said called all of his dogs "Captain"; maybe because of his being a Ranger??

His being a Ranger was documented in a book I read as a cchild about the Hoxies. It was a family tree in book form. It started with Ludwig Hoxie in Sandwich, MA in 1643. Ludwig came from Holland, but I think he sailed from tthere and was English or scottish living there (a Separatist/Pligrim) or that was taken from a ships log. Sometimes ships sailed from England and stopped in Holland before crossing the Atlantic (for provisions, trade goods, passengers??).

I read a blog here that said the name came from Hawk's eye (eye pronounced long E; means island in ancient celtic, like Chelsea meaning Chells eye - SEE: the novel "London" by Edward Rutherford).

Hope this helps.

Eli Goldsmith

Hoxie family in New York

Gideon and Henrietta Lacey Hoxie had at least four daughters, and possibly a fifth daughter. The daughters were Angeline (b. 1839), Sally Ann (b. 1834), Martha M. (b. 1843), and Abbie (b. 1848). The possible fifth daughter was Henrietta (b. 1825). Angeline Hoxie married Ambrose Jordan Peaster. We refer to Angeline as Annie. She is my gg-grandmother. I am trying to locate information about her sisters. One of them married a Culver and they had a son named Elias, b. 1864. Do you have information regarding the Hoxie or Culver family?

WILLIAM HOXIE William L. "Bill" Hoxie passed away April 24, 2009, at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City. He was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Weldona, Colo. He was 89 years old. Bill was predeceased by his wife, of 67 years, Elsie Hoxie, who passed June 2, 2007. He is survived by his two children, Judy Craven (Wes) of Boulder City, and Robert Hoxie (Delfina) of Albany, Ore.; grandchildren, Stephen Hoxie of Palmdale, Calif., Samantha Hoxie of Corvalis, Ore., and Heather Doan of Simi Valley, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Brandon Doan of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Haleigh Hoxie of Palmdale, Calif., and Courtney Schulte of Los Angeles. Bill's parents were William and Maude (Mitchell) Hoxie, and he was raised and settled in Arvada, Colo. He married his wife, Elsie, Nov. 9, 1940, in Castle Rock, Colo. Bill was drafted into service with the U.S. Army Jan. 5, 1941, and was sent to the Asiatic Pacific Theater, returning back to the States May 1944, with the rank of first sergeant. He received medals from the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, American Defense Service and Good Conduct. Upon returning, the family stayed in California a short while, moved back to Colorado, and then eventually settled in San Fernando Valley, Calif. Bill worked for Sierra Distributing Company for 25 years. His hobbies were riding his Harley and Gold Wing motorcycles, riding his dune buggy in the desert and playing cards. He and his wife moved to Boulder City in 2001 to be near their daughter, Judy. He attended Grace Community Church in Boulder City and was a member there. After Elsie passed away, he went to live at the Nevada State Veterans Home until his death. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be just a family affair at graveside at the Boulder City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Nevada State Veterans Home, 100 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005, or to Grace Community Church, 1150 Wyoming St., Boulder City, NV 89005.
Inscriptions in two cemeteries

My granduncle Charles DeForest Hoxie died in 1907, place unknown. Inscriptions of his death appear in two cemeteries, Dale Cemetery, Ossining, NY with is wife Annie Florence Gorton who died in 1952, and Union Cemetery, Edmeston, NY with family members. Inscriptions on the family monument include his brother Robert Franklin Hoxie, who died in 1916 in Chicago and his parents Solomon and Lucy Hoxie and sister Jane, who died in Edmeston in 1917, 1928 and 1930, respectively. Is it common practice to inscribe the death of a family member on the family monument when they were buried elsewhere? If so Robert could be buried in Chicago. How can I find out where he's buried?

Yes, I am related to Wilbur T.Hoxie. My father, Wilbur J. Hoxie was, I believe, named after him. My gr. gr. grandfather was Silas P. Hoxie, brother or Isaac Hoxie. Isaac is, of course, Wilbur T. Hoxie's father. I have a picture of my father as a young man standing next to Wilbur T. Hoxies' grave marker. Ironically my father died in an automobile accident in his 30s and Wilbur T. also died young. How wonderful to hear from you. Any information you have about Wilbur T. or Flora would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I am most happy to help you with any information you would like.

My ggrandmother was Elizabeth Hoxie, daughter of Joseph and Mary Hoxie of Sandwich, MA. I'm new to this, but have info from Lodowick in the 1640's on that my father investigated. I'm really interested in information about grants or anything that may be available to descendants in purchasing an ancestral home. Ours had to be sold in 1995 after being in the family since Lodowick himself. Anybody know about that?

Hoxie family around Madison County, NY

I am trying to trace my grandfather's mother, Edna Mae Hoxie. She was married to George Jasper Stanton. George was the principal of Richfield Springs High School around 1930, when my grandfather, Rexford Hoxie Stanton, would have graduated. George was also principal of Highland High School around Poughkeepsie, NY. Edna Mae Hoxie had 10 children, 9 survived to adulthood, her son Robert dying at age 2.

Rex, my grandpa, passed away in 1999 after marrying Elvira Lucy Tuttle and having 5 children, James, Michael, Judith, Elizabeth and Jean. Elvira still lives in Madison County, NY and is 85. My grandfather was not in contact with his siblings and this is about as much as I know about the Hoxies and Stantons.

We are descended from Edwin McMasters Stanton but I'm not sure exactly how. Thanks in advance to anyone who could give me any new info or leads on how I could go about obtaining new facts!

It's almost a full year later and I am not making any headway on finding Joshua B. HOXIE's parents.....Now I do believe that he is a grandson of Joshua Bill HOXIE and his wife, who is still unknown..... But who is the parent of my Joshua, and/or the children of Joshua HOXIE, the son of Joshua Bill HOXIE?......Can ANYONE help me sort out this missing link? I know with all these Joshua HOXIE's it is a real confusing issue....But I think that the answer lies in solving which of these Joshua HOXIE's is with whom and where in the time frame (1800-1831), where there seems to be my generation gap.
I did find Joshua Bill HOXIE on the 1800 census in Stanford, Dutchess County, NY....But since Joshua Bill HOXIE died in March of 1812,that would make one generation gap between Joshua Bill's death and my Joshua B.'s birth of 13 October 1831, also in Stanford, Dutchess County,NY......Could he be the son of Joshua Hoxie, who was one of the sons of Joshua Bill HOXIE.... Can anyone tell me more about this son, Joshua HOXIE, the son of Joshua Bill HOXIE? I haven't been able to find much about him either, and in my gut, I feel that there is some connection of all these Joshua HOXIE's...Please HELP ! ! ! .......Gail Remick Veve

Joshua B. HOXIE;

Hello fellow researchers. I have a HOXIE relative that I can't seem to find any clear parental lines. Joshua B. HOXIE born 13 Oct 1830 in Stanford (I believe), NY; married Delia E. DAVIS (AKA--"Adelia") the daughter of Henry Josiah DAVIS and Cynthia A. (COOK) Davis. This family is highly suspected of movement between Dutchess county NY and Litchfield county CT during the early and mid 1800's. I have my whole line of "COOK's" from my mother's DAR application. However, I can't find the rest of the HOXIE family lineage to my Joshua B. HOXIE. I have seen several of "Joshua B. Hoxie" but the dates are off ex; b. 1722; then there is one for 1803. But I can not find a connection for the Joshua B HOXIE who was born 1830 and died 20 Sep 1884 and is buried in the Sharon burying field which is near Armenia NY. Can anyone help me with my HOXIE line? I seem to keep coming up empty or going in circles with my research. I can be reached at < gail_veve@yahoo.com>. I am willing to share any information I have from this DAR application/lineage. Thanks in advance for any time and help. Gail Veve

My Three-Greats Grandmother Hoxie (Hoxsie), Amy Johnson...

Hello: This is, truly, a Hoxie request...although the name above is of the maternal line...I have earlier given an extensive link here (and I have one also in the Johnson link as well)for my 3-Greats Grandmother Hoxie, Amy...second wife of Zebulon Hoxsie (the "s" seems to come and go in the family), and mother of Allen K. Hoxie, my 2-Great Grandfather. I have seen bits and pieces, both on this site (the person who seemed to have some detail must have quit or was phased out in time, as was my first link, I think)and others...I am truly desperate to find out about Amy...her name is too "of the norm" (a/k/a 'common', like Miller, my name)to search the normal Ancestry sites...the closest I come is her birth sometime in the later 1700's in or around the area of Rhode Island or so. I really would like if someone has any, any information at all about Amy Johnson to let me know of what you may have. I do not know if this makes any difference, but I am in possesstion of 'the book', if you need assitance in part of your line. If you truly come from this lineage, let me know and we can talk and share what each of us may have. Lastly, in summation, I would like to know if anybody...anybody at all knows the true orign of our forefather, Lodowick Hoxie (a/k/a Laudowick Hauksie)...is he from Scotland, or England, or elsewhere?...if you have any idea, and it is definitive, please let me know as well. Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon. From the family...that is uniqually Hoxie...James A. Miller///a Hoxie through and through.................

Hello: I belive we are related...Allen K./Julie E. (actually, it is Gulielma, I have found out from the 'Book of Hoxie') are my Great-Great Grandparents Hoxie...their last child (before Gulie (Julie) died) was Paul Preston Hoxie, named after Paul S. Preston, of Penn. Great-Grandfather Paul married a Norah Washburn, I believe also they lived in Iowa for a while...and they had four (4) children...Allen Hoxie, who later skippered the Milwaukee Clipper for many years...Dae W. Hoxie, Vice-President of Kirsch, Inc. in Sturgis, MI...my Grandmother Gulielma Hoxie (named after her Grandmother), and Mae C. Hoxie; who married John Payne...a very infulential accountant residing in Chicago, IL.
The Hoxies later settled in the late 1800's in South Haven, MI. It is there that my Grandfather Miller, John Cleveland Miller, met Gulielma, and they married sometime prior to 1908 or so.
I have strived for years to find out more about the Hoxie's...I have no family pictures...the closest things I have are the wedding photos (and such) of John & Gulielma, my grandmothers bible, given to her in 1899 when she was 12...and mixed photos with the Miller family.
I would like to converse with you to see if you have any older photos/info. on the Hoxie's...I would be more than willing to share what I have. Let me know if you are interested, and we can go from there.
I have not looked at the Hoxie's for a while now, but thought to give a glance with my other families tonight...and I am glad I did. Hope to talk to you soon.
A fellow Hoxie..............

Preston (named after his grandfather (Probably Paul Preston or Samuel Preston), a Quaker who came to PA in 1703):
http://www.dcnyhistory.org/books/munhank.html (do a word search for "Preston")
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/bucksp/davistoc.htm
-Shows Preston coat of arms & map of land in Bucks Co.,PA
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/bucks/history/local/...
-Text that documents Prestons from England to PA in 1703.

It's confusing because the names Paul & Samuel were given out to sons and their sons/nephews, and it appears that Paul may have had a second wife (or his son/nephew married...) Using "Jr., Sr., and I, II, III, would've helped alot!) Anyway, it should be cool to go back to Beeston, St. Lawrence, Norfolk, England and Bradley, England, in your search! The surnames of their some of their wives mentioned were Taylor and Fisher. Good luck!

I don't know if this will help, or not.

My Great Aunt is Hattie Boyer. She was born in Hooper, Dodge County, Nebraska Sept., 1892. Her family lived in Nebraska until after 1900.

At that point the father, Franklin Boyer it appears died. The family dispersed at that point.

Some of the family went to Ohio and Hattie Boyer ended up in Michigan. She appears in the 1910 census for Detroit, MI, working for the Blamber (sp?) family.

I haven't found any information beyond that, except that I know that my aunt married someone named Hoxie.

I knew my Grand Aunt and vaguely remember meeting her husband. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name.

The other conformation I have of the last name is when my Great Grandmother died, Mrs. Hattie Hoxie is listed as one of the children. If I have it correct, Hattie Hoxie died in 1983 in Ohio.

If any of this rings true for you let me know. I'd like to pick up more information on the Hoxie side of the family.
