No, I don't have any information on her. Just tried to help about a year ago when you initially posted the message. If you're a member here at ancestry, just go to the home page and search on first name Van* (using the asterick) and last name HOY. One of the results is the 1910 census which I mentioned in the previous message. That may be her...? Definitely something to look into.

Sorry for not responding sooner. I am not sure if my Vannetta Hoy is the same one you are reffering to but I do know her mother's name was Annie (and the maiden name was Sheetz - from what I've been told). Do you have any information?

Chris

I should have mentioned that the DC came from the pilot FamilySearch. Quite a few Ohio DCs, but this the only one I found with Talitha's name.

Have you read about this family in "A Centennial biographical history of Hancock County, Ohio" -- which can be found on Google Books?

If not, Google: "The story of Philip Hoy, founder of the family of that name in Hancock county" and it should take you right to James T. Hoy. Interesting information.

I'm interested in Peter Hoy, b ca 1804, Pennsylvania, d 1881, Delaware County, m/1 Lidia, STB born 23 May 1808, d Sept 1835, Fairfield Co. Ohio, children:

Catherine Barbara, b 26 May 1832, PA, m Charles Hensel;
John H., b ca 1835, PA.

Peter m/2 Maria(h) Catherine Yearick/Yerick/Urick, b ca 1815, PA, d aft 1880 (one source gave 1900). Surviving children:

William F., b 10 Aug 1841, Bloom Twp, Fairfield twp, d 15 May, 1909, Delaware County, Ohio.

Josephine S., b 12 Oct 1944, Bloom Twp, d 23 Sept 1921, Delaware Co., Oh, m Monroe Crego.

Cordelia J., b ca 1846, d aft 1860, Delaware County, Ohio. M Clay Connell.

Mary Elizabeth, b ca 1848, Fairfield or Delaware County, OH, m John Aller.

Henrietta R. b 7 May 1853, Delaware county, d 14 Sep 1927, Delaware County.

** Emma J[ane] b Oct 1855, Delaware County, d 13 Apr 1934. Columbus, Franklin County, m Charles A Aller. (their dau Edna m Edwin Irwin -- gggpts of my SiL)

Susan Yearick, b 7 Dec 1858, Delaware County, OH, d 8 Jul 1918, Genoa Twp, Delaware County, m. Budd.

I am unable to speculate on the parentage of Peter, as there were too many of them, and the records of early Ohio a bit scant.

I'd appreciate any leads.

Pat

Hello Mark,
I have begun a project I started a long time ago when I was a teenager. Nancy Agnes Hoy married James Maxwell Moore. A Moore married a McCormick (my maiden name). Anyway, I have always wanted to connect all the Hoys in the Garland Cemetery in a clear family tree. 25 years later I have set down to do this. If you are interested, please email me at compass@mindless.com. I'd be happy to share with you what I've found out so far.

Just wondering if anyone has any information on Jane Hoy who married John Boyce from Ballyrogan, in County Down, Northern Ireland around the 1820's. John Boyce died 13th of Feb. 1864. Written in his will is his wife Jane Boyce alias Hoy. The spelling looks like that? Their children listed in the will were:
James resided in America
William resided in America
Hugh resided in Greengraves
John in Killearn
Joseph in Killearn
Jane married George Purdy
Robert in Ballyrogan
Isabella Ballyrogan

Any information would be helpful in my research.
Hi Sue,

All I know about Samuel (William's dad) is his DOB 11/7/1819 Antrim, Carmoney, Ireland - He was a farm labourer. This information taken from LDS site Batch 7721751 - Source call 1059330 - notes SAML HOY as father.

William was born 8/1/1856 Antrim, Cork, Ireland - he married Mary Jane Dunseath - Came out to Australia via Scotland. His eldest daughter Eliza Ann Hoy was born 1879 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The rest of Williams children were born in Australia.

I don't know if William had a brother Samuel but he did name one of his Children Samuel. I also do not have William's mothers name.

I don't know if this info will help to see if we have a match. If so, I have heaps to share with you.

I believe the elder Ezekiel to be the son of James Hoy, also spelled Hoey, who was from Ireland. He came to SC in 1772 and received free land because he was a Protestant and unable to pay. I do not know what county he was from, but do know what ship and date he left and arrived. I would love to find out where in Ireland he came from. email me at Nachalink at yahoo dot com

Hello,
I have a copy of a story of Susan or Susannah Fish that claims that Her husband "Hoy" was a violent man and actually killed Susannah's 6 year old daughter. Susan joined the LDS church and ran away with her remaining chldren and settled in Southern Utah. It was said that Her husband, whom she had divorced, came after her and the chldren a number of years later, asking the grown daughters to care for him in his old age, offereing them his wealth. They refused and he reportedly left all his wealth to the Catholic church in Salt ALake City. He is said to be buried in the Salt Lake City cenetary.

Since finding this Hoy Island on Google Earth map that is located on the northern part of Scotland, I was surprised to find another Hoy Island on the southwestern side of Scotland. I am not sure if it is in the far northern Irish Sea or not. North if Ireland are some Scotish islands, the one on the east is called Arran Island. About a mile or so east of Arran is a tiny island less that 2 miles long, maybe a mile wide that is called HOY. It is about 17 miles across this body of water to Ayr Scotland.

I do not know if this will help you at all, especially since I am just getting started myself. However, what I can tell you for certain is that my father was Roy Herschel Hoy Jr. (Born 1951, Died 2000), and was born in LaCygne, Kansas.

My grandfather was also from Miami county (I think it may have been previously named Linn county), and his name was Roy Herschel Hoy Sr. (Born c. 1916). I have to check with my mother, but I think he might have been born in Paola. However, I figured the location you listed was too much of a coincidence to ignore, so I decided to post this to see if it might be of any use to you, although I must admit that I could not find a Lakorn on the map to see how close it is to Lacygne.

Re: Hoys of Ky & Va, 1677 to 1906, with a side order of Johnsons

Edward Davidson, Junior, a son of Edward Davidson, Senior, was an overseer for William Hoy in Buckingham Co., VA, per the 1773 Buckingham tithe list. Edward Davidson, Senior (born circa-1715; he was a constable in Buckingham) was married to Agnes Mosby, and Edward "Senior" died in Campbell Co., VA around 1794, leaving a will at that time. Edward "Senior" did not mention any sons in that will, except for his son Charles Davidson, so I expect that his son Edward "Junior" had died by 1794 (and another son named David Mosby Davidson had left his own will in 1793).

An Edward Davidson died about 1777 in Anson Co., NC, and a George Davidson attended to his estate. In 1778 in Anson, a William and Rebecca Mask deeded three plats of land to a Captain William Hoy, and a George Davidson and a John DeJarnett were witnesses. In 1800, a younger George Davidson, as well as a man named William Hoy Davidson, appeared on the Anson Co., NC census (both men were in their 20s or so).

Was the above Captain William Hoy in Anson in 1778 the same man who had been in Buckingham five years earlier (and who went to KY later)? I wonder if Edward Davidson, Junior (or possibly the older of the two George Davidsons...whoever he was) had married a daughter of William Hoy and fathered a son named William Hoy Davidson? I wish I could find what happened to William Hoy Davidson and/or the younger George Davidson who were on the 1800 Anson Co., NC census. I have traced this overall Davidson family back to James City Co., VA in the 1680s. Note: There was also another (and unrelated...as proven by DNA testing) Davidson family in Anson Co., NC in the early-1800s. Comments on any of the above?

I've checked my notes and realized they are not brothers. My William Hoy was born 1849 and died 1918. I also made the mistake their father's name was "James Hoy" who married Jane Reid 05 Aug 1841 Islandmagee, Antrim County, Ireland. I was researching a William Hoy for a while until I discovered it was the wroung family - I checked my notes and he to is a different William Hoy then the one you are looking for. This is from the Islandmagee gravestones- William Hoy who was drowned at Troon 19 Sept 1869 aged 19 years. Hoy erected by William Hoy in memory of his beloved wife Margaret who departed this life 30 Nov 1879 aged 29 years.
Sue

Hi Lisa
Sounds like they could be brothers to me. My Samuel's father was Samuel Hoy and his mothers name was Jane Reid married 05 Aug 1841 Islandmagee, Antrim, Northern Ireland.
If these are your William's parents then it would confirm they are brothers.
Sue

You are welcome to send me a ged.com file of all the information you wish to share. I am slowly working on getting the Cemetery records for Letcher into my genealogy program for Letcher. I have been slowly getting the information gather that is in a book about Letcher from 1983.
There are family stories but many of the families that use to live here didn't get their stories added.
I look on the web at free genealogy sites to see if anyone as possible matches barring that I try to post to message boards.

I welcome information and stories related to people that at one time lived in this area.

Thank you for providing the information that you did. It will help with getting the cemetery records and the area history more up to date.

Hello

This is probably a long shot as I don't know anything of the HOY family. My grandmother born 1878 in SUNDERLAND was called SARAH HOY OLIVER DIX. The name OLIVER came from her grandmother (SARAH HOY OLIVER)who was born in SOUTH SHIELDS CO DURHAM. I am assuming that HOY was a surname from an earlier generation.

Does this mean anything to you?
Regards
Enid Atkinson
