We do have a connection. Are you John, son of John and Edith? Was your grandfather called John as well? They lived in Scunthorpe. If so, he was the eldest child of Lizzie Ann and Thomas Hoyes. My grandmother was one of his younger sisters. She was called Margaret and I was named after her.
My grandmother and John had lots of brothers and sisters, Abraham, Hilda, Charles, Albert, Herbert, Olive, Edith to name the ones who lived beyond childhood. I met all but John. I would love to see the bible. It must have lots of details about the family in it.
Please get in touch. My email address is margaret.coote@ntlworld.com

I have just discovered a family bible which in which I wrote my name in 1955, aged 8. The bible's original owner was Lizzie A Smith of Benniworth. The name Smith is altered to Hoyes.Do we have a coonection here? I think my grandfather was born near Louth in Little Grimsby, married and then lived in Scunthorpe.

Your grandfather was my grandmother Margaret's eldest sibling. Their parents had 13 children but only 9 of them survived. I can remember all of them really well, except for your grandfather, but I remember his daughter Edith and her husband John Blackburn. They had a son Simon and he got married a few years ago and invited my parents to his wedding. Simon now lives in Doncaster. I apologise for not replying earlier but I use genes reunited now more than ancestry.
Please get in touch and we can compare a lot of our research. All of our grandparents siblings are dead now, but there are several of their children alive still. Are you Eric's son?
My email address is Margaret.coote@ntlworld.com.

Hi, My great grandfather was George Hoyes (b1841), son of Thomas, master baker in Harlaxton, Grantham in mid 1850s. Do you, (or any other reader) know about the link to the Scots? The Moray area seems to have had quite a few, but I can find no clear evidence of their moving south to Lincs where most UK Hoyes come from. Some Hoyeses (possibly the Scots?) went to Jamaica and other Carribean islands and founded another branch there. Any knowledge of links would be appreciated. Lesley

She is a HARDY from Lincolnshire and her grandmother is Caroline May DAUBNEY (known as May) born 6th May 1916 at Thimbleby. We believe that her parents were George & May DAUBNEY (poss nee COOK?) of West Ashby (waiting for birth certificate to confirm this)

George is poss son of William & Susan DAUBNEY of Highfield Farm, Hemingby born ca 1882 Hemingby but this is not confirmed as yet

Does any of this sound familiar?

Penny, maybe you can contact me via the good old email but I'd have to do some searching to find out about John Hoyes. It seems that there are two major Hoyes' families in Britain but I can only assume that it was all one 'clan' at some point considering that the name appears to originate in the islands of Scotland and therefore the origin of the name is probably Viking - I always wondered what those bumps on my head were for!!!! Send me an email on: phoyes@abidjan.oilfield.slb.com

Have a nice day.

Peter

My Mother is getting on in years and she asked me last week to try to recreate our genealogy.
She is a Hoyes and I would be interested in in seeing if our lines merge somewhere.
Most recent connected surnames to my mom's
Hoyes lines are Clancy and McCallister. my Great Grand Father
was George Franklin Hoyes. it's only been a week since I started
and am concentrating on running the McCallister line but will be working
on Hoyes soon.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you but I
got a big break and was able to trace one of my lines all
the way to the 1600's England! Anyway, here is what I have which isn't much right now.
My grandfather is Eugene Hoyes his father is George Franklin Hoyes.
Now the rest I am taking out of a letter from my mom's Aunt Minnie from many years back.
Eugene's Grandfather was also named George Franklin Hoyes
Eugene's Grandmother was Jane Rook.
Jane and George had 4 boys, 1 girl->George-William
-John-Walter-Jane.
Son George had 10 kids including Eugene-6 girls, 4 boys
Son William had 6 kids- 4 boys and 2 girls
Son John had 1 girl-believed to be named Mae Whitlock(?)
Son Walter never married.
Young George's sister Jane married a man named Kenney(Kennedy?)
They had a girl named Mary. It is rumored that in the later years
Jane Rook had a habit of smoking a pipe while
rocking in her chair. She passed on somewhere in her 80's.
Young George married Mina Adell Clancy Aug 18 1887. And passed on Dec 9 1939.
Mina had two sisters and a half-brother named Mathew. Her father was also named Mathew.
No mention of her mother's name. Her mother died when her dress had caught fire and
she ran outside around a tree which kept the family from putting her out.
Mina's sister Clara married Chris Mooney. Mina's other sister Mary married a Joe Keith.
Jane Hoyes Kenney is mentioned to have been in Indiana. Also something about a "little Harry Cross" (???).

What line are you related to? Also if you have researched these two lines a little farther
would you send me some information?

Thank You
Greg
bonecrusher@cyberdude.com

Peter, Thanks for the reply to my message. I havn't done much research into the Hoyes side of the family yet, having been concentrating on my mother's family. What I do know is that my grandfather, Frederick Arthur Hoyes, was born in 1906, d.1932 and was from Brimington Common, near Chesterfield. He was a railway worker. This is all that my father, Douglas Arthur b.1931, knows very little about him. The only other information that I can give at the moment is that from our point of view, the name is extinct. My father has only half brothers and sisters, and I have only a sister, who is now married. I also know that, apparently, the Arthur is a traditional name in the family, and I wondered, having read your reply to Cindy, if that possibly links the families more closely than you thought! Any other information would be gratfully accepted. Thanks again. Val

Derbyshire Hoyes'

Val, from the somewhat limited knowledge I have of the Hoyes' family in Britain
it would appear that there are basically only two families - one of which seems to have been from the
north of Lincolnshire ( the mob I'm associated with ) and the others from the Leicestershire / Derbyshire area.
It would seem that the families origins are from the northern islands of Scotland and as the name is certainly not
Scottish or derived from the Gaelic names it's almost sure that the origins of the name is Viking. The idea that
the Hoyes' name was or is associated with the American Indian is therefore highly unlikely. Val, at the moment I'm looking
around for some info for Cindy and therefore if I learn anything about the other half of the family I'll let you know.
Have a good day,
Regards,
Peter

Hoyes et al

Cindy, I just saw your request regarding the Hoyes family in Lincolnshire and maybe the following could be of use to you. From the information I have there are only two Hoyes families in Britain - one originated from the Lincolnshire area ( Lincoln/Horncastle ) and the other from the Leicester area.
My father, Arthur Hoyes, was born in Horncastle in 1906 and was one of a family of 14 children. My grandfather was, as my father, a baker. The links to Skegness are not likely although one of my uncles does live in a small coastal town just north of there. From what little information I have the name seems to originate
from the islands of Scotland and therefore, given it's definitely not a name of Scottish origins, it could be considered to be of Viking origin? Certainly the Hoyes name in Britain is very rare ( less than 0.1% I'm told) and every Hoyes that I know is related to one of the two famlies - that being said there was a
marriage of a Hoyes to a Hoyes some years ago.

If the info is of any help let me know and maybe I can dig up some other details.

With best regards, Peter

PS. There was a Hoyes that was Sherrif of Nottingham for a brief period in the 1600's!!!
