Having read through the various lines here, I thought I'd jump in at this point.
I am currently researching Capt. Joseph Huddart, his father was William Huddart, Mother Rachel. Only child.
However, his father William lived in Allonby, so too his siblings Joseph, John and Hannah Huddart. Their Father was John Huddart, Mother possibly Barbara.
Hannah married James Sharp and it is from their daughter, Barbara Sharp who married Ebenezer Scott, we believe our Huddart line originated.
If anyone has certificated proof of the above, that would be great.....My cousin and I have taken years to get to this point. The Memoirs are now online, so too other pieces about Capt. Joseph Huddart. But not much about his ancestors.
Would love to hear from anyone interested in this Branch.
Robyn
Australia

Sounds interesting, but not sure how the Sutton fits in. I have a lot of first names and offspring and dates of birth and death etc, but an even larger bunch of holes.
Seems like my family started up in Cumberland and the moved nearer London for work. My grandparents each had 'only children. I have great great uncles who served during ww's and one who went to Aus and another to S Africa and yet others who went to Canada and the States.
Grandfather Herbert Huddart, married to Ethel Mary Frape late 1800's London, was a teacher

G'day Tricia

If my research is correct, your Charles Huddart is my 9th cousin, both of us being descendents of John sutton who married in Westmorland in 1650.

I've a log-on to Ancestry in order to use the Message Boards, but I don't have a subscription. Perhaps we can discuss further by direct email.
I am tracing back my mother-in-law's father Harold Parker Huddart born 1890 born in Cockermouth. I believe your father was Harold P. Huddart's brother. I believe their father's name was Joseph Pearson P. Huddart and their mother was Elizabeth; does this match your tree? I have additional information to compare and would love to hear from you. Also, Harold P. Huddart died here in the states.
thank's for replying. good point, were they employed or were they living in duke street in 1870, answer is, i'm not sure yet, haven't explored. i have got the b cert. for stephen & janet's(richardson) son, john joseph,b 1876 in Wigton. They must have moved.

Interestingly, on their m cert in 1870 stephen lists his father joseph as a labourer, & living.

This is as far as i've managed to get so far.

any good?

Are you saying your ancestors worked at the same address on Duke Street (Whitehaven) or that they lived at the same address as my ancestors (29 Duke Street). My gr-gr-gr grandfather was living at that address in 1864. I'm not sure when he moved there as he and his family were living at 33 Senhouse in 1861. My gr-gr-gr grandmother passed away in 1863.

I have 3 Josephs in my files: one born about 1800 in Muncaster (I have no additional info on him), one 1825-1897 married to Mary Elizabeth Parr and four of his children, and the third one born about 1865 in Muncaster and married to Maria Ainsworth.

I have some more information on Charles Huddart that I'm hoping will fit with someone else's research. Charles was the son of John Huddart and Margaret Strachan. He was born in 1869 and married Annie Ashton in 1894. Their children were Minnie (1896) and George Bernerd (1899), however I strongly suspect that George was actually the child of Annie's later partner whose name was Bernerd. John & Margaret also had a daughter, also called Minnie in 1871, who went on to marry Fred Flood.

Can anyone give me more information on John Huddart? I still haven't been able to find out what happened to Charles either. If anyone had any information on when or where he died, I would be very appreciative!

Jess

Hi,
I now know James Huddart 1827 (mariner) was son of Henry Huddart 1774 (mariner) and Anne Hodgson 1788 of Bridekirk, Cockermouth, Cumberland. Henry was one of at least 9 children born to John Huddart 1741 of Bridekirk and Dinah Tickell c1740 of Lorton, Cumberland. Does this please ring any bells?
Thanks Pauline

All I know at the moment is that Charles Huddart was born c. 1870. He attended school in Carlton in Victoria (but I can't find a record of his birth here) and he married Mary Ann or Annie Ashton in 1894. We were told that his father was a seaman who sailed in the orient. We actually have a couple of vases that he apparently picked up somewhere (China I think) on his travels. So, yes, it does sound like it fits, but I'm not sure how yet. I will order the marriage certificate at some stage and see if that has any more information, but I have more certificates to order than I have money to spend on them at the moment!

Jess

Hi Jess,
I went through my tree and I don't have a Charles Huddart in Australia, however, that doesn't mean we don't have a connection.

Peter Huddart (my gr-gr-gr uncle) was the master mariner who first went to Australia...but he died back in England in 1904. I don't have any record of children for Peter and his wife Elinor.

James Huddart, my gr-gr uncle, is actually the more famous one of the two. James followed his uncle to Australia where he met and married his wife. They had 5 children (two daughters and three sons). It is James'first born son that I have no record of. (Of the other sons, one was killed in the Boer War and the other in WWI.)The first born son, also named James, was born in Australia in 1872. Beyond that I have no more detail on him. Perhaps he stayed in Australia and had a son Charles? In my records I only proof that the two youngest children (the two men killed during wars) returned to England with their parents prior to 1897.

Huddart is not that common a name and particularly in Australia. It would certainly be plausible for us to have a connection. I hope the info above helps. Let me know if I can check anything else for you.

Marg

This thread has been really very interesting! My great-great grandfather was Charles Huddart of Melbourne. We know very little about him as he and my great-great grandmother divorced and she later remarried. My grandmother always wondered about the Huddart family and what happened to Charles Huddart so I've just started researching it (literally only hours ago!). Once I can establish if Charles was part of Peter Huddart's family I'll give you the Australian branch.

Jess

Hi Pauline,

I have a very extensives Huddart tree. Unfortunately, I do not have the people in your posts. In the time periods you mention I have two James (b 1816 and O fell into the mariner category. My gr-gr-gr grandfather had a shipbuilding firm first in Whitehaven and then in Workington. One of his brothers was a sea Captain who travelled to Australia and one of my gr-gr-gr grandather's sons followed his uncle to Australia where he founded a fairly famous shipping company "Huddart Parker". So the sea life was definitely in the blood of my lines. If you come up with any other details feel free to contact me. You can also email me off line if you like at meldrum@sympatico.ca. Marg

His father is stated on his marriage lines as Henry, a mariner. However, I can't sort out which Henry this may be, as I don't know James' mothers' name, and cencus info doesn't seem to help as Henry was probably at sea at the time or deceased.
Can anyone out there help me?
Hi Marg,

You will find just a few Huddarts in the IGI and all seem to be from the same area of Cumberland in the north west of England. There is also a lot of information on the East India Company on the internet.

If you want a copy of the photo of the gravestone, just let me have your contact details. There was a small booklet which gave details of the Old Protestant cemetery in Macao but, interestingly, those who had died and had been buried elsewhere initially, including your William Huddart are not listed among the tombstones [there were about a dozen gravestones which I noted, none of which were listed but all were from before the cemetery was 'announced' so I guess the people had been recently buried outside the walls of the city [the Portugese did not initially allow Protestants to be buried inside the city walls].

Happy to help out if there is something you might need from this side of the pond

Colin

Hi,

I came across the Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao during a recently working spell in China; the stone gravestone which is relevant is in the upper terrace and is cemented into the wall. The graveyard wasn't formally opened until 1814 and then some of the protestant graves from outside the city walls were brought into the cemetery [the Portugese controlled the city at that time and only allowed catholic burials inside the city].

The insciption is in script rather than printed and reads:
To
the Memory of
Captain William Huddart
Commander of the York East Indiaman
who after a long and painful illness
which he bore with utmost fortitude
departed this Life in Macao Roads
on his passage to England
March 29th 1787
Aged 24 years

I have a photo of it [though not digital] and if you have a connection confirmed I will be happy to send you the photo [I am in UK]

Colin

I would love to see the information. There could be something in it to follow up on. My 5x great grandfather was born in 1754 in Cumberland which is about the right time frame for your William. My ancestor's name was John, however, he named his oldest son William (my 4x gr grandfather). I know William is a common name and this is a huge stretch but, none the less, it is fascinating that "Huddart" was in China in the 1700s and I would be grateful so see the transcription. My maternal grandfather, Joseph Huddart (born somewhere in Cumbria around 1896), had a brother Jim, and Jim had a son William. I believe William eventually moved to the USA.

My grandfather lived in Yorkshire after he married (in the Barnsley/Darfield area). I believe Jim also lived in that area.
Well, well, well! I'm always happy to meet another relative...and we are related. The earliest of your husband's ancestors that you mention (Peter married to Elizabeth) was the son of Peter Huddart and Mary Tyson. That Peter was the son of John Huddart and Isabella Sherwen and that is as far back as I know. John & Isabella had 9 children including my gr,gr,gr,gr granfather John (married to Jane Anderson). Co-incidentally of all of John and Isabella's children your husband's line is the one, other than my own, that I have the most information on. The reason for this is met one of his descendant (originall via the interent) later in person (we are fast friends to this day) back in 1997. You mention that Adam had a son named John Harold. I have information on 4 of Adam's children...but no John Harold. If you would like to contact me at my regular e-mail address (above) we may be able to exchange a good deal of information.

I have recentley stated to trace my husbands family tree online and was very interested in your messages on the board.

My husbands line goes back to the Huddarts of Arlecdon in Cumbria. In particular to Peter huddart born 1828 approx and his wife Elizabeth Bird. This seems to be my husbands Gt. Gt. Gt. Grandfather.

His Gt. Gt. Grandfather was also a Peter Huddart married to an Elizabeth. Who had approx 8 children. One of whom Adam is my husbands Gt Grandfather. He moved from Cumbria to Nottinghamshire.

Adams son John Harold Huddart lived and worked in the Mansfield area until his death in 1979.

My husband and I would both be very grateful for any information anyone has on the Arlecdon Huddarts.

Gwen and Danny Huddart MBE

Hi John,
I am also reseraching the Huddart/Chrystal line. Could you please tell me what date and location in England Joseph Huddart & Elizabeth Chrystal married? I don't have much on this line yet, but I do have that Elizabeth was born in 1875. I also have three boys being born to this union: John W. Huddart b. 08-12-1896, James H. Huddart b. 01-11-1898, and J. Parker Huddart birth date unknown at present. Elizabeth had a younger brother named Henry who married Carrie Munn. Thank you for your time. Gloria
