Dear Pamela

I am currently researching my family tree and came upon your site! its fantastic. What an immense amout of work you have done!

My great grandmother was a Kate Maria Newman (nee Hudgell), Born September 1887 in St Giles she died on 06/03/1928. I thought you might like this information to add to your tree?
I wondered if you had any ancestry information relating to Kate? (it would be much appreciated) The information in this line of my family is very limited. Do you have any information as to whom her parents might be?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Davinia West.

Thankyou for that feedback, much appreciated.
I was under the impression that a " Journeyman " was a master of all trades, with regard building work, I was unaware of the term journeyman referring to baker.
Just a point of interest, my late fathers father was listed as being a journeyman on his sons ( dads fathers ) wedding certificate.
How I came across william and emma cleary in my research was after I questioned the address on the wedding certificate of my grandparents, it was a local studies person who suggested that the address was an address of convenience, then when I later discovered williams and emmas names on dads baptism record the jigsaw pieces snapped in, so to say.
Cork is of significance because as far as I am aware, assuming that I have the correct ancestory information, my fathers great grandfather was from cork, he married an elizabeth maide ( different variants have been used ) and settled in chiswick.
What you say about times being hard is very much correct, it is documented that my late father was born in a workhouse too.
Your suggestion about them going back to ireland is an interesting suggestion I guess, but in as far as I am aware, the relationship had broken down when my father was placed into care, the relationship had broken down some years previous to my father being born, dad had a sister who was born in 1919, she was placed into care in 1922, there was a period of seperation before dad was born in 1926.
Thankyou very much for your feedback, it has given me a different angle to look at, thankyou.
Pam I would dearly love a picture of emma, thankyou for your offer.
All the very best for christmas to all and a happy new year.

Sincere regards.
Re: william cleary

I am not very good at family research but I can tell you that william cleary was born in Marylebone Workhouse - both his parents, William and Julia (nee Maloney (sometimes Moloney/Malony/Molony, depending on the spelling preferred by the recording clerk at the time) were immigrants from Ireland, Co. Cork, Newmarket area. This may tie in with some of the information you already have about David John and Florence Hearne.
Julia died when her son, William Cleary, was 11. Her widower, William, returned to Ireland with his two sons, William and Patrick, but left Johanna (sometimes spelt Joanna), his daughter in London at the Orphanage of the Convent of St Vincent de Paul.
William, the son, does not resurface in England until 1903: the family may have popped backwards and forwards from Ireland to England quite regularly, but I can find no trace of him until 1903. I do not know what happened to Patrick.
William was a baker (journeyman). So the connection could be geographical - a shared history with Ireland, in particular Co. Cork, mutual friends, or even through work. William and Emma were exceptionally generous and shared whatever they had with whomever was in need, so your grandparents would not have been the only ones to find a helping hand at their door.
I can also tell you that addresses of convenience were often used by members of the Cleary family. Several members of the family would enter the workhouse to give birth, or when times were particularly desperate, despite having a home address: I think life was exceptionally harsh for many people at that time.
You may find that David John and Florence Hearne may have also gone back to Ireland (Co. Cork (?) or even Dublin (?)-where I believe William Cleary spent some time, and they may never have had the opportunity to return to England.
If I come across their names in my research I shall let you know.
I hope this may be of some help to you - it is all just fragments and scraps of information - I am sorry I don't know much more and wish you every success in your search. Ireland is a closed book to me research wise I'm afraid.

Have a good Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hello there, thankyou for your reply regarding william and emma cleary.
Firstly,I am the son of david john hearne, since deceased,he was the child that william and emma cleary stood sponsors for, on behalf of his mother florence hearne, nee bennett.
The address 14d clapton buildings appears on my fathers birth certificate.
It states that he was born at 182 westmoreland road walworth, i have since learned that this was the address of the workhouse.
You say that they are members of your family, in what capacity are they so?
It would appear that the address 14d clapton buildings was used as an address of convenience by his parents, as my research leads me to believe that his parents were not actually registered tenants there, only william and emma cleary were, I can only assume that my dads parents were friends of william and emma, which explains why they were the sponsors for the baptism at southwark cathedral.
I am trying to find out what happened to florence and david hearne senior as my father, like his sister before, were placed into homes at very young ages, my father never did find his father and mother despite attempts by him.
Thankyou for replying, I would certainly welcome further correspondence if you feel you may have information,no matter how insignificant it may seem.
Thankyou again and all the best for xmas and a happy new year.
Sincere wishes,
William Hearne.
Firstly please accept my apologies if I have chosen the wrong category concerning the classification, but this is the first time I have communicated with anyone via Ancestry.com.
I note the names william and emma cleary of 14D Clapton Buildings - dates you give are relevant. These are members of my family. I don't recongnise the names David John and Florence Hearne, however Southwark Cathedral makes sense from a family point of view.
Please let me know if there are any points which I may be able to help with.

Best wishes.
william cleary

Hello Pam, I am researching my family tree.
Of interest to me are william and emma cleary.
They were sponsors for my late fathers baptism at southwark cathedral in 1926.
Dads parents were david john and florence hearne, nee bennett.
I am wondering if the william and emma cleary that you mention are the same ones that are recorded on my late dads baptism record.
The address given on the record is 14D Clapton Buildings.
When I followed up this address I was informed that there was no record of david john and florence hearne living there, indeed it was william and emma cleary.
Further research of the address lists children william, kathleen and annie may cleary.
It could be pure coincidence but the cleary names that I have very closely match the ones that you mention.
I am working on the belief that william and emma cleary were close friends of david john and florence hearne, who were married in 1919 at southwark registry office.
My dad was born in 1926 and was placed into the care of the crusade of the rescue in 1928, I am trying to establish what happened to my dads parents, my dad did try to trace them but with no luck.
Best Wishes.

Hiya

I have been researching my HUDGELL/HUDGILL family tree now for over 20 years and have now over 3,300 names of the family and their decedents and am still looking for more, I have put them on a website www.hudgill.co.uk and all of the names that have married into the family are there, if you would like to have a look and then get back to me it would be much appreciated, some names are in Herts. and some cross over into Essex but mainly they are - Sawbridgeworth, Birchanger, Stanford Rivers, North Weald and Epping, others go into Suffolk, Middlesex and London, but we are all related, if you are I would love to hear from you,

Thanks so much,

Pam
www.hudgill.co.uk

I have a John Hodgell in my family that was born in either Britain or Ireland in 1826 and came to the US in 1850. I also know he fought in the civil war and have some info on that. It is thought that maybe the original name was John Hodge II as in the second but somewhere it turned into hodgell
