Classification: Query
Researched in 1953 by Lester VanAllen, my grandfather. I am looking for info prior to U.S. immigration. Quote:
John and Mary Hugh and family of five children along with seven or eight other Welshmen and their families from the region of Bala in Merionetshire, North Wales, set sail on the 17th day of April, 1698, for Philadelphia. They arrived ion the 17th day of July aboard the ship Robert and Elizabeth.
Dysentery claimed the lives of forty-five people, including Mrs. John Hugh. All were buried at sea. Two or three were cast overboard each day. Among those who were spared were Edward Foulke and his wife and nine children. One of the daughters, Jane, later married Ellis Hugh, son of John and Mary. The name Hugh was changed to Hughes a generation later.

The children were Rowland Hugh (m. Catherine Humphray), Mary Hugh (m. Humphrey Ellis), Jane Hugh (m. Thomas Ellis), Ellis Hugh (m. Jane Foulke), Gainor Hugh (m. John Harris).

Hugh/Foulke wedding 4/5/1713 in the Gwynned Meeting House, Society of Friends.
