I will be turning 70, and Chloe, my wife, wants to take me there.

I can take some pictures for you. if you give me your email, I will forward an email from John about George's "murder."
Hi, Doreen, and thank you so much for the info.

I met on the Internet Allison Hugill, now Allison somebody else after marriage, but she is my cousin. She filled me in on some of the offspring of George and Sophis, and I will double check your info you just gave me with her version.

In the meanwhile, I also met a fellow who is writing a book on the hugill family, and he told me of the murder of George. If I can help update your records, please advise. Tks. John

Hi Chriss,

this is truly very interesting to hear. I am completely stuck, just about where you have indicated. Yes we are related! If you have public access to your tree I shall take a look. I have William's father being another William bn 1733, his mother being Sarah born 1743 and dying Ellermire, Bilsdale age 83 years, does this sound correct?

Best, Alison

Thanks for the quick reply Nancy.
I have Daniel Jackson married to Hannah ?. Their daughter Hanna, born Marcy 19 1827, married William Walker on 25 Nov 1852 in Danby Yorkshire. They came to Whitby, Ontario with their sons Daniel and John Walker and Hanna's illegitimate daughter named Francis Hannah Jackson born 22 June 1850. William Walker died in 1859 and Hanna remarried to his brother John Walker on 18 May 1862. They had a daughter Eliza Jane Walker born 13 Sept 1862. Hanna (Jackson) Walker died in 1864 and John Walker remarried to Rachel Ann Moon. Rachel Ann Moon was born 29 July 1839 and died 28 Oct 1928 in Vancouver BC. Rachel Ann Moon and John Walker had two children both born in East Whitby, Ontario.
It's a very convoluted genealogy. I'm trying to identify Rachel Ann Moon's parents.
The Silver Wedding Anniversary photo I have of the Moon's is dated 15 Feb 1889 and says, Mr. Mrs. R. Moon. It is taken in front of a Victorian House with about 50 people posing.
Give me more details on which Daniel Jackson born where? Would this by any change be Daniel Jackson of Farndale Yorkshire who married Hannah MacClane whose daughter Mary Ann Jackson b 1810 married William Moon b 1800 in Kirkdale and moved to Whitby Ontario after having their children in Bransdale:
If you give me some data I might be able to link up a relationship. Also do you know who your Moons were? Any data, as in wedding year even?

Nancy

Thank you for this. I've looked at that Moon family of William's a few times and have wondered if there was any connection but I think it will be through a previous generation. Do you have any information on William Moon senior's parentage?

You may have come across a Christopher Moon who was a paper miller in Lealholm (not far fraom Bransdale, Ferndale and Glaisdale) and he had a son named George. There was an earlier George Moon who was from a little further north so maybe that is a connection. Thank you for this though. If you have anyone that you think might know more, who you could put me in touch with, I would be most grateful. Interesting about the cornish connection. I've long been immersed in west cornish records for my huge cornish family (Hosken, Woolcock, Donnithorne, Treweek, Tresedder, Nancarrow, Michell, Sampson, Williams etc). No Moons there though although they were mostly millers!

On the Moon side of the family,
Robert Moon and his wife Elizabeth Jackson had four children in the village of Orono, Clarke township, Durham, Ontario, Canada. These are Alice Moon b Feb 15 1836, Hannah Elizabeth Moon b July 29 1839, Robert Jackson Moon b Feb 15 1841 and William B Moon born May 29 1842.

Robert Moon married Betty Jackson on Dec 31 1833 in Lastingham, North Riding, Yorkshire.

Robert is the son of William Moon of Bransdale, who lived in Cornfield House, and built Moon Chapel, a small Wesleyan Methodist Chapel near his home. He was baptised June 19 1808 Kirkby Moorside. His mother was Mary Hugill. and his parents married May 19 1798 in Kirkdale.

My ancestor Mark Jackson studied Methodism with the father, William Moon, in East Moors, for many years, and so did others in the group that came to Canada.

William's oldest son, John Moon 1798, stayed behind in Cornfield House,

the second son William Moon 1800 came to Whitby, Ontario after 1841 with his wife Mary Ann Jackson, whom he had married 26 Aug 1834 in Kirkby Moorside (Charity Jackson c/0 Dianel and Hannah Jackson, was one of the witnesses) and at least four of their eight children born in Bransdale. William 1800 died in Whitby in Jan 30 1872. After his death his wife Mary Ann remarried and moved to Clarke Township, durham, Ontario near my Jacksons.

the daughter, Ann Moon b apr 4 1806 Bransdale , christened in Kirkdale married William Scarth of East Moors and stayed in Yorkshire they lived in Cott House.

Mary Ann Jackson appears to be the daughter of Daniel and Hannah Jackson

Betsy Jackson appears to be the sister of my Mark Jackson of Bonfield Gill farm in East Moors.

I am looking at some other Moons in Whitby. The Richard Moon family in Hope Ontario comes from Cornwall.

On my tree at GenesReunited I've posted photos of the Jacksons and also of Moon Chapel and Bonfield Ghyll Farm.

Others are better qualified to help you on the yorkshire side of things, but I have letters and news articles and documents to back up the Canadian based information.
Nancy

Nothing on Moons.
There is quite a group of Snowdon in Stokesley researchers; try googling "Snowdon Stokesley" if you are interesed, a guy called Ian Hall holds a website for all the work.
regards,
Stuart

Hello John
I WaS very interested to read your post about the Hugill family. The family features throughout a book myself have just wrote about our local villages during the Great War and after. Your own father, John Thirlaway Hugill, and your grandfather George Wass Hugill both have stories in our book. Below is a little about our book, if you would like to know more please contact me.

Best wishes
John.

Keep The Home Fires Burning is a monthly diary of events both at home and overseas concerning five villages in East Durham.
Sherburn Village, Sherburn Hill, Pittington, Littletown and Shadforth suffered greatly during 1914-18; in the years following the Armistice, their hardships continued, despite promises that a better World would grow from the war to end all wars; the book also covers the aftermath years 1919-1923.
Myself and my good friend Kevin Stock have put the book together after years of research. It has been a labour of passion for us both and is part 2 of a 3 part project that began with us designing, raising funds for and dedicating a new civil war memorial in the centre of Sherburn Village last November 11th. Part 3 of the project will be a similar book to this one, but covering the lives of our ancestors during 1939-45.
Specialist Military Book Publishers, Woodfield Publishers in Bognor Regis took on the book on its own merit and have been working hard to make it available for the first anniversary of the memorial on November 11th 2008.

The published price for the book is approx A4 size, 250 pages of text (over 155,000 words), plus large sections of monochrome, sepia and colour photos, many of which have never been seen before, is £25.00 per copy. The book can be ordered direct from the publishers at:

http://www.woodfieldpublishing.co.uk Tel. 01243-821234

Or contact the author(s) on 0191-3723849 – 0191-3722845.

Any net profit made from the sale of book is to go to Sherburn Hill History Club

Dear Nancy,

I've read right through this thread and realise that I'm a little out of date. I'm interested in this Hughill name as it seems to crop up quite a bit in my research for MOON and SNOWDON ancestors. I'm also quite interested in the fact that you mention the GARBUTTs as well - also related to the Snowdons.

My 5xG.Grandmother was Hannah Snowdon born 1753 in Stokesley and she married my 5xG.Grandfather George Moon (possibly born c. 1755 somewhere around that part of North Yorks or maybe a bit further east towards Whitby) in Stokesley 8/5/1779. She had the Garbutts in her ancestry and there seems to be some evidence to suggest that maybe even more than one Moon married Hughills. I think there was one (possibly a William) marrying a Hughill lady over towards Fylingdales or Whitby way.

I'm pretty stuck with my Moons. In fact I couldn't quite believe it when I read someone's message on the Moon message board saying that there weren't many Moons in Yorkshire!! If only that were true!! My lot of Moons seemed to have been millers as well as farmers. In fact George was the miller at Ruswarp in Whitby during the 1780s when he had my 4xG.Grandfather Jonathan in May 1780 and other children Mary in 1783 and John in 1786.

I was interested in the mention that was made in this thread (by you possibly?) of Robert Moon who was writing to his brother Christopher trying to persuade him to come over to Canada. There was a Christopher Moon who was the son of a Christopher Moon milling in the 1780s in Lealholm (in the parish of Danby just overlooking the moor to Glaisdale - a paper mill was there as well), and this Christopher had a son called Jonathan and a son called George. I have often wondered if this Christopher might have been the brother of my George.

OK. so, do you know of any Moons in your records and Garbutts and Snowdons and Hughills marrying into any of those families? A very big ask I know but if you or anyone else out there can help me tease some sort of sense out of all the many William, George, Robert, John, Charistopher, Isaac, Joseph and James Moon millers around North Yorks in the 18th and 19th centuries I would be extremely grateful. I just get the feeling that the Hughill name (along with Garbutt and Snowdon) may hold some clues for me.

Thank you very much and huge apologies for hi-jacking a bit of your Hughill thread.

Thanks for your message - sorry to take so long to get back to you. My connection is through Nellie Hugill, she was my husband's great aunt.

We knew nothing about her except through some old photos belonging to my husband's father. I did lots of searching and thanks to help from Shannon Mark, my friend in BC, Canada I tracked down Robert Haynes and the children of Mary Haynes (now deceased). We converse by email and we visited Montreal just over 12 months ago and met the family. One of Mary's daughters and her partner toured Europe last year and stayed with us briefly.

I posted the message regarding Arthur when I couldn't find anything about Nellie, all I had was the name of her husband and children.

Lucky find eh?

Chrissie

Reply for William 1832

In the journal of Mr. J. Dixon's voyage from Whitby to Quebec on the "Columbus" in 1832 he mentions "6 May William Hugill preached to the satisfaction of most who heard him" Later in a letter home he mentions "June 7 William Hugill who went from Glazedale and ourselves tok a house to put our goods in (in York)" also "William Hugill has friends in the Gore of Toranto (sic) about 18 miles from York" and "William Hugill took up his abode there"
If WH "preached" and was a Methodist like Dixon there might (just possibly) be a connection with the Hugill family branch of Hawnby, Yorkshire, England who were among the founders of Methodism there.
Hope this helps and is not a "red herring"

I have recently been researching my family, and have noted that my grandfather James Hugill b 1886 was taken to Weir City , Kansas, aged 2 or 3 by his parents. There is a 1889 record in the New York arrivals list of the family, parents Henry + Emily and his brother Joseph. Weir City was a mining boom town in the 1880s + 1890s, and the 1881 census says Henry was a miner before they went. They must have returned to England by 1896 when sister Ethel was born. My grandfather James was killed in the 1st world war in Belgium in 1918. I recently found some letters he had written to my grandmother from France in 1918, which make interesting reading. Last year I viewed his name on a memorial wall (no grave)in the Tynecot military cemetery near Ypres. As far as I know, his parents were still alive then, living in Gateshead, but not absolutely sure about that

Hi Nancy,

Incidentally, one of our Wm HUGILLS, born 1838, married a Mary CHAPMAN. This Wm was born Bilsdale Midcable, North Yorkshire.

His father, also Wm, who worked Norwoods farm all his adult life, was one of my Great Grandfather's brothers, who were born Ellermire farm also in that area.

Maybe that CHAPMAN is one of your relatives?

Regards,
Alison HUGILL (married FLEMING)

Still working back and trying to find how the two HUGILL families who worked the two residences that made up Ellermire, are related. Must be further back somehow. If I might help you with info or you might be able to help me with info, it'd be lovely to hear from you.

Best regards
Alison HUGILL (married FLEMING)

This couple were my grandparents, from Gateshead and Durham, England.

My Father was John Thirlaway Hugill, and upon marrying my mother, did not contact his family further. I have no knowlege of them. I have learned through Allison Hugill who posted here that he had a brother Joseph William Hugill
Born: 16th October 1905, Felling, Gateshead, Counties of Gateshead and Durham, United Kingdom who emigrated to Australia.
My father emigrated to Brazil, where I was born.

Does anyone have any knowledge of any more offspring?

Thanks so much.
John
