DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Spc. Rachael L. Hugo, 24, of Madison, Wis., died Oct. 5 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. She was assigned to the 303rd Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, U.S. Army Reserve, Jackson, Mich.

Edward and Mary moved to what is Now Floyd County Virginia around 1790.
Edward died in Floyd County 30 june 1830
Mary died in Floyd County 21 March 1835

The following is from their marriage document:
"These are to certifie. Whom it may concern that Edward Gray and Mary Hugo were lawfully mared on the thirtenth day of Mar. in the year of one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight 1778 be me John Diemer.
God gave yoe grace for to live to his ...... and prayse. that you may obtain the eternal rest through our Lord abd Savior Jesus Christ witch God grant for Christ sake Amen.

My 4th Great Grand mother is Mary Francis Hugo.
In 1805 Anna C Gray copied the following entry from the family bible of Mary Hugo Gray:

To escape persecution of Romans the Hugo family came to Southampton, England in 1685. Brought young boy, Robert Lewis Hogo, with them. He married an English woman in 1705. Don born in 1706, James Robert. He married an English in1727, son born 1729 - James Hampton Hugo.
In 1751 he married a French woman and they had a daughter born in 1753 - Mary Francis Hugo.
Edward Howard Gray and Mary Francis Hugo married in the state of Pennsylvania in March 1778 by Rev. Deimer.
Son Joseph Howard Gray born in March, 1779 in Pennsylvania.

Later a second son, Edward Gray was born in 1786 also in Pennsylvania.

Do any of you have any information on this family.
Did Mary Francis come to america with her parents and if so when and where did they arrive?

What were the names of any of her female ancestors?

I'm still looking for a connection to the Victor HUGO family, but back a number of generations. Specifically, Jean Hugo b. 22 Jun 1648, married to Catherine Mansuy b. 1659. Married 10 May 1673 in France. They had six children. I don't have all children's names. I'm interested in Joseph Hugo married to Anne Simon 1715 Domvallier, Voges, France. Anyone have info on Joseph Hugo or Anne Simon family??

I have a William Hugo from Veryan, Cornwall, England he had 9 children. His son Edward Hugo Sr was born in England and he had 8 children. His son Edward Jr was born in England and died in Pittsburg PA. He had 7 children and a son Jenkin Thomas Hugo was born in England and died in Evansville IN. Jenkin had 4 children. A daughter Alice was my GG Grandmother she married a Charles Johnson. If any of this sounds familiar please let me know.

Researching Otto HUGO (b. 1850 Hannover, Germany), enumerated 1880 census at Fort Halleck, Elko, Nevada. Otto HUGO is possible brother of Charles Hugo (b. 1855) Germany> NY> MA.
Charles wrote that he had received a letter "from my brother in Nevada who informs me that he is going to be married to a widow who has a ranch & a herd of cattle & also 5 children ranging from 7 to 17"

I am trying to identify a Victor HUGO who is buried in my ancestors' family plot at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. The cemetery records plainly state that the gravesite belongs to Margaret Crout (my g-g-grandmother), and along with Potters and Crouts, there is Victor HUGO and Edward & Cora DRAKE. Victor was buried 7/30/1890. The records do not give a date of birth or his age.

I saw some references to the Anchor Bay area for HUGOS on this message board, this is where my g-g-grandfather Frank POTTER died - am wondering if this explains the connection. Because I am not sure I have identified all of his children, I am wondering if a daughter married this Victor HUGO. If any of this seems to connect with what you're researching, please contact me.

Searching for Info about Irving and Amanda Hugo. Irving was b in Bavaria, was in York PA following the Civil War, where he marr 1) 1869 Barbara Bergman, and 2) 1873 Amanda Schmidt (Smith). Shortly after his second marriage, is said to have moved to Decatur, Illinois, then to Denver, Colorado. Here he is said to have become a cowboy who died (date unknown) in a gunfight. Amanda appears 1900 in census of Pueblo City, Colorado as a widow, whose 16 children were all dead, running a boarding house. Any leads would be most welcome. Email hesh@pa.net.
