Re: George Hulbert, Civil War vet

My husband and I have traced this George through his Civil War and deaths records to be my husband's gg-Grandfather from Bradford Co., PA. He was the son of Amos Hulbert and Betsey Coolbaugh of PA. The only known child was Merritt Hulbert who was born in Tomah, WI in Jan. of 1875. The census of 1875 in Tomah shows two females in the household, one being a possible sister to Merritt. George had married a Sarah Cown/Cohen, Cone?, whom we have not yet been able to identify. Sarah apparently died at a young age because Merritt was living with neighbors in the Census of 1880.

Honorable John Calvin Hulbert: Saratoga

I am looking for information on the first wife of John Calvin Hulbert born Feb 12, 1817 in Pittsford, Rutland Co, Vt. He worked as a lawyer in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Co, NY. On June 21, 1848, he married a woman named "Mrs. Sarah Cross" in the city of Albany, NY. The 1855 NY Census recorded she was born in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. Before Sarah's death on Dec 11, 1863, they had one daughter Jennie born in abt 1858. On April 17, 1866, John then married Katherine Amanda Benedict by whom he had a daughter Mary Vernon Hulbert (1870-1957), who was known as Mamie. I am looking for any information on Sarah. Thanks!

My great grandmother was Nellie Hulbert B:1866 in Michigan,
married George B. Houliston, her father was C. Hulbert B:1838 in New York, mother's name was Helen "maiden name unknown" B:1840 in New York also and a sister Jennie B:1869 in Michigan. Taken from the 1900 US Federal Census, under Minnisota. Hellie F. Hulbert "Toole"'s daughter Helen R. Houliston B:Mar 1894 in Minnisota is my grandmother. Helen R. Houliston married Claudius B. Toole B:1888 in Montana. My father Clark Booth Toole was born 1912 in Montana. A little more detail can be found in my Family Tree under Richard Warren Toole.

Best of luck with your search!
Need lookup in RG Hulbert's Hulbert Family

I need a lookup of two pieces of information in RG Hulbert's Hulbert Family.

Both concern the wives of William Hulbert II, son of the emigrant. His second wife was named Howard. His son Obadiah defended his mother's Howard interests in something or other. Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John states, in two articles on William Hulbird I and descendants, that William II married a third time to Hannah Whitaker, widow of John Hulit of Concord. Then the Great Migration Begins cites the Passengers of the Mary and John as a source for that idea.

The Passengers of teh Mary and John articles name three general sources for their Hulbert family information, and none of this is in the other two sources that are mentioned. Also from what I've seen online, I think that both statements come from R.G. Hulbert's Hulbert Family, 1937.

If someone has access to that book, PLEASE lookup what it says on William II's wives, and on Obadiah's defending his mother's Howard interests; including all source information. Thanks!

He had a brother called Joseph. He married Maria Comely in 1861 in Melksham and had 3 children, Elizabeth, Arthur James and Sydney and died in 1897. Sydney my ggrandfather was born in 1875 in Trowbridge and later moved to Surrey.

Hope this helps
Jackie

George Hulbert, Civil War vet

From the Hayward Republican newspaper Sept. 20, 1894
"Mustered Out"
George Hulbert, an old veteran familiarly known to most of us, was found dead in bed at the Frank Lavell stopping place on the Spider Lake road Tuesday. He retired the night before apparently in good health and spirits. The authorities here were notified and Coroner Smith, with a jury of six men and Dr. Trowbridge, repaired to the above-named place where, after a thorough examination, was discovered that the man had died from heart trouble. The remains were brought to this city and taken charge of by the G.A.R., assisted by the Sons of Veterans and Drum Corps, gave him a decent and respectable burial yesterday afternoon. Little is known of the deceased, except that he was an old timer and a member of the 42nd Wis. Vol. Inf.

This George appears on the 1890 Veteran's Schedule as a resident of Sawyer County who served his country from Feb. 9, 1865 to Sept. 7, 1865 as a private in Company E. He was discharged on disability.

I have Oren Hulbert as having 5 wives:
Julia Ann Ames, Barbara Ames, Helen Searles, Sylvia Caroline Dirst, and Clarrisa Payne.
Sylvia Caroline Dirst was a daughter of John Dirst, my Great, Great Grandfather. Sylvia and Oren were married on Sept 20, 1894, probably in Joliet, Will Co. Illinois. Sylvia died March 13, 1897 and is buried at Seward Mount Cemetery, Kendall County, Illnois. Helen Searles, Oren's 3rd wife, was a sister of Caroline Searles Dirst, who married John Dirst. I do not know of any children of Oren.
HOPE this helps.
Charles F.
Hi Stephanie
Sorry for the very long delay in getting back to you.
Yes, I am still interested in finding any information on the Hulbert family of Trowbridge. My great grandmother was a Hulbert.

Her dad was Joseph Hulbert born about 1843. He married Sarah Wicks born about 1837.

Josephs dad was John Hulbert born abt 1798 and he married Sara Rose in Hinton Charterhouse. John died about 1868.
I have put on my tree that he was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, not too far from Trowbridge. If this is correct, then his dad was James born about 1770 in Biddestone, but that is questionnable.

Would love to hear back from you.

Tracey
I am not familiar with the names, but it's possible that they are descendants if Benjamin Hulbert II who came to Bradford County in 1802-3 from Elisabeth, NJ with his brother Amos I. Amos I was the first to be murdered in Bradford Co. at 23 years old and was my ggg grandfather.

They are descendants of William Hulbert I who came from Wales on the Mary and John in 1630 as are most other Hulberts. Many say he was brother to Thomas Hurlbut who came in 1637 but we proved that wrong by matching another known descendant of William and my DNA with some known descendants of Thomas Hurlbut. This is a FamilyTreeDNA project.

An easy way for a Hulbert to find out if their ancestor is William they only need to get $100 bucks together and a male family member to get a little DNA from inside their cheek. (It's completely painless)

Hulbert Connection to Hurlbut thru DNA

While DNA testing of descendants have shown immigrants Thomas and William were not closely related, new results have connected Thomas with a descendant of Samuel Hulbert b. 1712 Bowden England.
The results are at
http://hurlbutdna.pbwiki.com/
This information strongly supports the connection between the two surnames in at least part of the family. There is an additional Hulbert tracing his line to William Hulbert b. 1836 NY who also has a close DNA connection.

We encourage other males whose lines have not been identified to consider DNA testing. Reviewing the surnames already tested at FTDNA, we find a Hurlbut and a Hurlburt not accounted for. We hope they will get in touch with the DNA Project.

I am currently researching the Hulbert family who originate from Kilby, Leicestershire. The first reference to the surname Hulbert in the parish records is the marriage of Richard Hulbert (Hulbard) to Mary Hazzael in 1802. Although Richard is described as being 'of this parish' he probably came from elsewhere.

Can anyone shed any light on where he might have come from? Do you have a Richard Hulbard / Hulbert, possibly around Leicestershire, born around 1777?

Hope very much that someone can help.

Marc Hulbert

I'm hoping that we can find a connection here! My father's name is Warren Hulbert (family name?) His grandfather's name was Homer ALONZO Hulbert, and his great grandfather was Charles who hailed from Gallipolis, Ohio which I believe is Gallia Co.?

Is there any connection that we can find? I have very little information on Charles.
Dear Tracey
It looks as if we are not related. I do not have a Joseph Hulbert at all and my John is nowhere near the date of yours. I have no James anywhere near the right time either, so I think our Hulbert trees are completely different. The surname Hulbert originated in Wiltshire, I have read, so there must have been quite a few families with the name. I suppose if we could go far enough back we would eventually tie up, but the furthest I have gone is to a marriage in 1830 between Jacob Hulbert and Millicent Grant. My 3rd great grandfather was another Jacob Hulbert and he fought in the Peninsula wars, was wounded and eventually became a Chelsea Pensioner - living in the Chelsea hospital and wearing the red coat.
Sorry, we cannot help each other,
Stephanie

Dear Tracey
Are you still interested in the Hulberts of Wiltshire? Mine came from near Trowbridge, but there were a great number of Hulberts around. Have you any more information since you last posted your message? My earliest Hulberts came from Melksham.
Stephanie
