Henry Edgar Hulse was my great grandfather. He married Hattie Nora Barton. Their children were: James Anderson (my grandfather), Emma Elizabeth, Mittie Oletha, Lora Frances, Henry Jefferson, and Virginia Jo. After living in a dugout, they settled in Wanette, OK. Henry was the justice of the peace in Wanette around the turn of the century. They raised my dad, LaWayne, and his brother, Dennis, for a few years before James Anderson remarried. Henry Edgar was born on a riverboat on the Trinity River in Dallas, TX. He called me his special "Dallas Grandbaby" because I was also born in Dallas. His father was Abraham Valentine Hulse. His mother was a portrait artist. She died when Henry was young.

I wondered if it would be possible for anyone to do a 1910 US Census search for me? The name I need to check is Edward Hulse (transcribed as Edward Hulke) born in 1882. Living at Emmet with Louise Cain and George A Hollenbeck.

I'm trying to find out if his birth place was England (Lancashire)

Many thanks

Hopkifam

My Josephine Brown's father was Joe Loman Brown, born in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, his father was Loman Brown, born in Chickasaw Nation, Mississippi and moved here in the 1830's. Josephine was an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation on their newborn roll. I don't know if there is any relationship between our two Browns, but it is coincidental about the name and area they lived in.

How interesting that there are so many near miss names in our trees. My Loman Brown was full-blood chickasaw and was born in Mississippi, then was moved to Indian Territory on the the trail or tears. His son, Joe Loman Brown, married Mary Ellen Hulse (daughter of Abraham Valentine Hulse and Elizabeth Cemantha Winters) and had my great-grandfather Odis Ludie Brown and his sister, Katherine Josephine Brown. Aunt Josie married Rich Graham and resided in Denison, Texas until she died at the age of 100. Odis died at the age of 19 from double-pnuemonia when my grandmother was 2 months old. Family rumor has it that Mary Ellen was disowned for marrying an Indian. I never heard if it was one or both of her parents. I have seen Abraham Valentine's grave in Ardmore. He is buried in the confederate section of the Rose Hill cemetery. I have not so far found much information about Elizabeth Cemantha Winters other than her father's name was Wesley. I don't know where she is buried but do know that Abraham had remarried. I don't have my paperwork with me but his second wife is shown on one of the censuses (maybe 1910 or 1920) along with Abraham and one of Mary Ellen's daughters, Alpha Davis. Mary Ellen Davis is listed as a widow with four children on the 1900 census in Woodville, Pickens County, Indian Territory.

I have not taken an autosomal dna test, however I have my relatives' roll numbers and some family photos. I also found some of their names in the old Chickasaw Nation Annuity Rolls of 1837 - 1860.

I have some other Brown relatives from the Barren county, Kentucky area. Isaac N. Brown's daughter Elizabeth Ann married John M. Chaney and moved to Texas, then Indian Territory. Their daughter, Theresa B. Robinson married Odis Ludie Brown, son of Mary Ellen Hulse.

Tennessee would be the right location for cherokee ancestry. I don't think we are related but it sure wouldn't hurt to keep an open mind. We may find a link yet. I live in Oklahoma City and my family is from the Lake Texoma area.

Good luck.

Lesa

howdy --

I live in Altus, Ok. My great grandparents were living in the Choctaw Nation (LeFlore Co) in the 1870s Chickasaw Nation (Stephens Co) from the late 1880s til statehood in 1907. They never signed up for Dawes, and moved to Tillman Co., Ok shortly after statehood. We are listed on 1900 Chickasaw Nation census as White. Anyone mixed race could claim any race. An autosomal DNA test I took came back showing we have Caucasian, Black, and American Indian blood all three.

you said --

Tennessee would be the right location for cherokee ancestry.

reply

For East Tennessee that is true.

Shelby Co, Tn, where my g-g-grandparents (Harriet Guess/t 1818-1886 and David B Brown 1822-1865) were married in 1841, is on the Ms River, and it borders Mississippi and Arkansas both. The Cherokee lived in E Tn, a long ways from Shelby County, Tn. I have found some Chickasaw "Guess/t's" in Marshall Co, Ms at least until 1836, and Marshall Co., Ms borders Shelby Co., Tn to it's south.

I don't know where the Chickasaw Brown's lived, though. I am at vhawkins1952@msn.com if you wouldn't mind sharing about the Chickasaw "Brown's".

thanks, :)

Vance Hawkins

He was probably born in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia and orphaned at a young age. The father stated on the 1920 census that he owned a railroad. In 1930 Frank Wilson Hulse III was a salesman for Standard Oil.

Hulse in Belize, Central America

The Hulse Family in Belize, Central America have been trying to trace its geneology for some time now and can use some help.
Hulse (Holtz, Hultz) There were different veriations of the name. Two brothers George Hulse and Stanley Hulse settled in Belize in the early 18 hundreds. I would like to know who has information on this and if this information is correct. They were the first of the Hulse to settle in Central America. Where did they come from?

Also, where was the name originated? It's German translation is Woods. I also have information that the family lived in Englan, Liverpool, Scotland. Can anyone help? We are putting the charts together and will be sending it to any Hulse interested.

Heneretta/Henerietta Maud Hulse sister of Margaret Elizabeth (Campbell)?

Notes from Vienna Emerson (Bennett) before she passed away stated that Henerietta (sp) was the sister to Margret E.Campbell ( why Campbell is a mystery!) but at least this has been verified to some degree, I have found out that Henrietta’s sister was Margaret Elizabeth (Campbell)?, daughter of John Campbell? born in Scotland and died in Belize.
She married Frederick Bolton from England. Their daughter Laura Bolton, b. August 1898 d. 1969 in Belize married John Esquivel of Belize. Their son Manuel Esquivel, was the Prime Minister for Belize. I have talked with Manuel and he was able to remember some of this.

Heneretta Maud married Herbert Walter Bennett, they had a daughter Ethel Maude Bennett who was mother to Vienna. Ethel moved to the US in 1910 leaving Vienna in Beliez with relatives, she later followed Ethel to the US.

The information is confusing I realize (Vienna called the same person 3 or 4 different names in the same sentence) but does any one have or recognize any of these names in connection with the other names in Beliez?

Hulse, Campbell, Bennett, Bolton, Esquivel

Re: Josephine Brown Hulse b. 1901 near Kingston, Pickens County, Indian Territory (Marshall, County, Oklahoma), USA

howdy --

Well that's interesting.

My great grandma's maiden name was Josephine Brown (1854-1932). She was b. in Arkansas and died and is buried in a country cemetery a few miles east of Manitou, in Tillman County, Oklahoma. She moved from Arkansas to LeFlore Co, Choctaw Nation in 1872 after she married Jeffrey Richey. They moved to Denton Co, Tx by 1880 and came back to live in the Chickasaw Nation in the late 1880s, near Duncan, Stephens co, Ok. They are listed as "White" on Chickasaw census of 1900, but I have taken an autosomal DNA test and it came back that we are mixed race -- also American Indian. I suspect Catawba and/or Chickasaw now, but once I thought Cherokee (isn't everyone Cherokee?:)

Josie's parents were David B. Brown and Harriet Guess/t. Both signed their marriage license with an "x". They were married in Shelby Co, Tn (present site of Memphis, Tn) in the summer of 1841.

One of Josie's sisters (Sarah Ann) married a Tarlton Bull and they lived in both Denton and Eastland Co Tx before coming up to the former Chickasaw Nation as well. Her other sister (Amanda called "Mandy") married a Knight in Denton Co, Tx. A brother John Henry Brown married a Bailey girl, is on 1880 census for Los Angeles, Ca and I haven't been able to trace him any further. Josie's parents (David and Harriet [Guess/t] Brown) also raised orphans surnamed Joiner, McNutt and Loony.

I was just wondering if your Brown's might be related to mine? I live in Altus, Jackson Co, Ok.

Vance Hawkins

Have you tried looking up Hulse ClanV. There is all the research you probably need.

I am out of line of AV Hulse. My great grandfather was Thomas McKinney Hulse. He married Margaret Zoie Holsonbake. My grandmother, Tassie, was one of their children. Thomas McKinney's father was James Peart(l) Hulse, a circuit riding Methodist preacher, in West Central Texas. Love to hear from you. I am a retired (20 years) teacher, special education through graduate school administrator and instructor. I was a psychotherapist and owned a clinic for kids (all ages-adulthood)and their families, who had learning disabilities....real bright kids who just couldn't read. My husband taught 43 years highschool through 28 years in college teaching Mathematics.

On my way to Thanksgiving festivities. Gotta get the ham and turkey out of the frig and get started! Linda Peveto, lpeveto@yahoo.com

Lorraine,
To which Samuel Hulse/Hults are you referring?

Samuel Hults (12)
b. 1767, South Hempstead, New York
m. Mary Gritman, 8 November 1789
d. 1830-1840, Hempstead, New York (?)

Samuel Hultz (12)
b. 1790, South Hempstead, New York
m. Sarah Akerly, 9 January 1819
d. 1840-1850

My great-grandfather was
Samuel Hults
b. 16 September 1828, Hempstead, New York
married Nancy Jane Clifton in Iowa

All of the above Samuels are descended from the immigrant

Richard Hulse (12)
b. ca 1640, England
m. 1st, Abigail __________ presumably in England
m. 2nd, Hannah Beardsley, 1675-1681 Brookhaven
d. July-August 1698, Brookhaven Township, New York

As to inconsistencies in spelling, this was largely due to the way the writer at the time heard the name pronounced. In the 17th century "Brookhaven Town Records, " for example, we find "Hulse, "Hulc," "Hulce," "Hule," and "Huls." In Hempstead, in the 1698 Census we find "Huls;" in the 1790 census, "Hultz;" in 1800, "Hults;" in 1810, "Hults;" in 1820, "Hultz" and "Hulls;" in 1830, "Hulse" and "Hulce;" and in 1850, 1860 and 1870,"Hults.”

There is a Hults family reunion held in Iowa/Minnesota/
South Dakota every two years (the next in the summer of
2010)

To the best of my knowledge all 18th and 19th century, Hulses (by whatever spelling)in Orange (I don't know
about Sullivan -- never researched it) are all descended from the immigrant Richard. There is, so I am told, a Hulse cemetery in Suffolk County

cpsonnichsen@gmail.com

Samuel b1843 & Hannah b1847, both in Frodsham, Cheshire, married 1868 Frodsham, having (at least) 9 children. My grandfather was Alfred Hulse (b1884, Runcorn). Looking for descendants of their other children - James (b1869 Frodsham), Frederick (b1870 Frodsham), William (b1875 Frodsham), Arthur (b1880 Runcorn), Clara (b1882 Runcorn), Samuel (b1886 Runcorn), Bertha (b1888 Runcorn), Ethel (b1892 Runcorn). I'm asking because I only recently found out that my grandfather had any siblings at all. Thank you. Robin Hulse.

Re: Kisi Ann Hulse m. William Miller in 1811 in NJ

If you search this board there is a reference to their son Ichobod Thomas Gordon Miller and his son, Benjamin Anderson Miller. That entry is at this location.
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

There is also a family file with Ichobod here: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/HULSE/2007-10/11930...

This family file adds the child, Archibald Thomas Gordan MILLER:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

This one adds the child Rachel Sawyer MILLER:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

Kisi Ann's first name has a lot of variations and I suggest that you search using Willis Miller and Hulse. There seem to be some family files that list Kisi Ann as the daughter of John Hulse and Abigail Williams, however, I happen to have "The Hulses in America" by Lynn Harper and it shows that their daughter Koziah was married to a HUBBART. I haven't researched this branch and do not know who's in error.

Good Luck!!!
