Hulton family from County Westmeath, Ireland, from 1790 to 1870.

I am searching for any information on members of the Hulton family from County Westmeath Ireland for the time period from 1790 to 1870. Here is what I have on an Edward Hulton, who I strongly suspect is my wife’s great-great-grandfather.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycatalogu...
EDWARD HULTON
Born FARAPILAGH, Westmeath
Served in 2nd Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 43
Covering dates 1823-1845

Note that there is no such place name as “FARAPILAGH” in Westmeath or anyplace else for that matter. This is most likely the Barony of Fartullagh, which is different by three letters from the spelling in the military records. In the Barony of Fartullagh there is only one town by the named Rochfort Bridge, which is also one of the four post offices in the barony. I will focus on the town and three remaining post offices.

I estimate that the Edward and Elizabeth Hulton in whom I am interested were married in 1845 and had five children (that I know of) who all were born in County Westmeath Ireland. In 1861 or possibly 1860, Elizabeth Hulton and her five children immigrated to New York City without Edward who may have died in Ireland. The names and birth dates of the five children were:

Catharine Hulton, born 1845
Garret Hulton, born 1846
Jeremiah Hulton, born 1847
Edward Hulton, born 1848
Patrick Hulton, born 1851

Here are some banking records from 1868 which establish County Westmeath Ireland as the origin of Elizabeth and her son Jeremiah. Elizabeth gave her birth date as 1818 but I don't have her maiden name.

Source: New York Emigrant Savings Bank
Name: Elizabeth Hulton
Record Type: Transfer, Signature, and Test Books
Transaction Date: 14 Dec 1868
Estimated Birth Year: 1818
Birth Country: Ireland
Other Birth Location: Westmeath
State: New York
Microfilm Roll Number: 11
Account : 68506

Source: New York Emigrant Savings Bank
Name: Jeremiah Hulton
Record Type: Transfer, Signature, and Test Books
Transaction Date: 14 Dec 1868
Estimated Birth Year: 1847
Birth Country: Ireland
Other Birth Location: Westmeath
State: New York
Microfilm Roll Number: 11
Account : 68506

Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland was conducted from 1848 to 1864 with the valuation of County Westmeath made in 1854. The surname Hulton only appears twice in Griffith’s, once for an Anne Hulton of County Down and the other for a Michael Hulton of County Westmeath.

[Broderbund Family Archive #188, Ed. 1, Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864, Internal Ref. #1.188.1.6773.1]
Individual: Michael Hulton
County: Westmeath
Parish: Rathconnell
Location: Killynan (Cooke)

The Hulton surname is extremely unusual in Ireland, with only two occurrences out of over one million entries in Griffith. So why do we have a cluster of Hulton’s in County Westmeath? The Irish estate of the Hulton family of Hulton Park was located in Bryanstown in Westmeath. It was quiet common for the British landed gentry to dispatch the younger sons, who didn’t inherit, to Ireland to manage the family estates. While in Ireland some sons married Irish girls and went native. In addition to managing the remote estates, another acceptable career for the secondary sons was the British military. The following two links establish the connection between the Hulton’s of Hulton Park and Westmeath.

Townships - Little, Middle and Over Hulton
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=52994

Lancashire Record Office: Records Search
http://archivecat.lancashire.gov.uk/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqIni...

The British national archives holds additional information on the Hulton’s of Hulton Park.

Hulton family, baronets, of Hulton Park
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView....

I am ordering documents from the British Archives and have a lot more research before I can establish that the Edward Hulton discharged in 1845 is or is not the Edward Hulton I am looking for. I would be extremely interested in information on any Hulton’s from County Westmeath.

Michael Ronayne
Hello Betsy,

Though I am not related to this family, I have been doing much research for another descendant of James Redmond HULTON of Wolfe Island, and while your story is very familiar, this is the first time I have heard that James and Mary Hulton had 11 children and I am curious of the source. My information includes the following 5 children:
John Henry Hulton, b. abt 1840, Ireland d. 13 Feb. 1881, Liverpool
Mary Ann Hulton, b. abt 1843, Gibraltar
Henry Hulton, b. abt 1849, Liverpool drowned off the Cape of Good Hope, 21 0ct 1867
Julia, b. abt 1852, Everton, Liverpool
Ellen, b. abt 1856, Liverpool
I have not seen the names Agnes, William, David, Margaret, Charles, nor Elizabeth for these parents. I also have never seen the mother, Mary, referred to as Mary Agnes.

Looking forward to hearing from you. I have recently connected with families of the siblings of James Redmond Hulton who remained in England and have many descendants.

By the way, I saw that you had posted a similar query about Ellen REDMOND. Ellen was the 2nd daughter of Lawrence (Laurence) Redmond, who was born in Ireland, Wexford, it is believed. Ellen mother's name is unknown. She had a sister, Kate, and two brothers that I know of.

Sheila J.
London, ON
CANADA

Hulton emigration

I am searching for Thomas Hulton b.1840, Pilkington, Lancs. I now have him on every census except 1901 aged 54, where I can find his wife & some of his children but not him! I have his death aged 86, in Bucklow, Cheshire 1925. A chance conversation with a cousin has suggested that one of his daughters, Ada, emigrated to Canada (poss Australia but doubtful). She along with a son, Thomas, are the missing children in 1901 aged 20 & 16 respectively. Has anyone any links to Canadian Hultons who may be decended from Ada & poss. Thomas?

James Hulton

Looking for any information on a James Hulton who was born in 1805 in Prestwick, Lancashire, England & died in 1871. I have that he married a Mary Agnes (unknown maiden name). They had 11 Children: Agnes, William, David, John, Margaret, Charles, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Henry, Julia & Ellen. Of these 11 I only have information on John - who married Ellen Redmond. John was born in 1838 in England & died Feb. 13, 1881 in Liverpool, England - buried at Anfield Cemetery, public plot 12,866. Ellen was born in 1842 in Ireland & died on Jun 4, 1883 in West Derby England and is buried in Ford Cemetery public plot SV.1109 - they had 5 children - Catherine, Emeline, John Henry, James Redmond, & Henry Alfred. It was my understanding that John & Ellen passed & the children were given to an Uncle who put them in an orphange. James & Henry came to Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada & they lived with Peter McGrath & a Greenwood. I am a descendent of James Redmond - any help would be great appreciated. Email me at BtsyAPyn@aol.com.

Thanks
Betsy

Paul & Ruth married on 1 January 1913 in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, USA.

As I research my families widely, both for my own family tree purposes and as a gift to friends and their families, I would really appreciate any family tree and relevant research copies from anyone in any country who is researching the HULTON name, or perhaps some leads to already existing websites where this type of information can be found.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer
.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone.

Writings of Henry Hulton "Sketches"

Please contact me with any information: Neil L. York [Neil_York@byu.edu]

I am interested in locating an item written by Henry Hulton, father of Thomas Hulton Preston, the 1st baronet. According to Wallace Brown in his piece “An Englishman Views the American Revolution: The Letters of Henry Hulton, 1769-1776” Huntington Library Quarterly 36 (1972):2, Henry Hulton wrote “Sketches, with a View to Fix Right Principles in the Minds of Children, and Lead Them to Just Sentiments, and a Virtuous Conduct.” It is undated, but almost certainly dates from the 1770s or early 1780s. According to Brown, the “Sketches” were still in the family’s possession at that time. Is that still the case?

I ask, because I have been given permission by the Princeton University library to edit Henry Hulton’s manuscript “Account” of the American rebellion, now kept there. I also have access to the two volume Hulton letterbook at the Houghton Library, Harvard. I am trying to find out everything I can about Henry Hulton for the lengthy introduction I will compose as a lead-in to the transcribed text (essentially, on Hulton’s life, the navigation system and the customs service, and the setting in Revolutionary Boston).

Much—too much—about Hulton’s life is hazy to me at this point, particularly the early years. I have seen (and copied) the 1790 will, I know that the Hultons lived in Burcott before moving to Andover after they left Massachusetts, but I still feel I know little more than what the editors included in their introduction to Anne Hulton’s Letters.

I have just plunged into the project and will not be back in England until roughly this time next year. In the meantime, I would appreciate knowing whatever you can pass along.

Sincerely,

Neil L. York
Professor of History and Department Chair
Brigham Young University

Oakmont became a borough in 1889. there was considerable support for naming the town Hulton."
pg. 9 "By 1834...only 15 people...the Hultons, the Lees & other early settlers...James Hulton, started his ferry service...RR began operating in 1853.
pg. 14 photo "James Hulton, operated a ferry from his home on the bank of the Allegheny River at the foot of what is now Hulton Road. Individuals were ferried across the river by rowboat while cargo & wagons were carried on a flatboat. Shown in this 1897 photograph are two female family members sitting in the porch while two men work nearby. The river is seen on the right"
pg 15 "In 1883, when Oakmont still was part of Verona" Just a tidbit for research purposes.
I do not see a family history nor a Leath. But I just noticed that the cover has 4 people in a rowboat. "A rowboat of Hulton's Ferry is shown transporting passengers across the Allegheny River. The ferry, operated by James Hulton, also used a flatboat that accommodated cargo & horse drawn wagons." So you should buy this book.

My great grandfather Jacob Hines married Mary Hulton in Hulton, PA in 1875. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Ann (nee Nuttal)
and she had eight siblings (brothers and sisters). According to my information, they were married in Philadelphia, PA ~1815. Ann Nuttal's sister-in-law was, also, named Rachel, who was the wife of Peter James. This Jonathan and Rachel's parents were Jonatan and Mary (nee Taylor), who were married on April 9, 1792 in Lancashire, Parish of Dean, England.
If this information confirms with your family
Hi Cousin.

HULTON's in Canada

I don't know if anyone is searching for Hulton's in Canada, but I recently found references to the following in the National Archives of Canada. www.archives.ca

Western Land Grants 1870-1930
HULTON, Charlie
THOMSON, Andrew Hulton

Postmasters - Henry J. HULTON (Winnipeg)

These are not related to me.

I also found a couple of cemetery references in the London, Ontario region.
Medway/Decker Cemetery, London Township, Middlesex Co.,
HULTON, James William
infant son of Jack & Margaret (SMIBERT) HULTON, died Feb. 1947 (no age) in Tillsonburg.

St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery, Arva, London Township, Middlesex Co.
HULTON, Frederick B. 1886-1958, beloved husband of Mary A. TAYLOR 1886-1978 "At Rest".

Again, none of these are related to my Hulton family that I am aware of, but I have never seen the surname in the London area before and would be interested in hearing from anyone related to these people.

Hope this helps someone's search.
Regards,
Sheila Johnston
London, Ontario
Canada

I looked more into my notes. Peel Hall, Wychevies. Southeastern end of Deane Parish, three estates Kenyon Peel Hall, Wharton, and Pell hall known as Wychevies, near the Ellenbrook. (Astley)

John de Hulton 1301
Richard de Hulton 1335 Wychevies, Peel Hall
Richard de Hulton 1383 was married to Margaret daughter of Thurstan Gillibrand. Peel Hall passed to the Gillibrand Family. I don't know if this will help, but this is what I have.

Deborah Nouzovsky

Jordan, John, and Isolda de Hulton

Jordan , John, and Isolda de Hulton were at Sandypool, Bedford(Leigh), Lancashire from at least 1231 to 1259. Eve de Hulton married Henry de Shuttleworth and in 1329 they were granted a Coat of Arms. Thomas de Shuttleworth was at Sandypool in 1292. Any info on Jordan, John, and Isolda would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to figure if Jordan is a seperate person or whether he is Jorwerth(Iowerth) de Hulton.

Deborah Nouzovsky

New George Hulton Info

David,
Quite by accident I came upon the graves of George and Esther Hulton. A little surprising info. Her birthdate is listed as 1842, not 1840. His birthdate is listed as 1818 instead of 1830. I have also found a George Hulton who was christened in England in 1818. I am attempting to verify all three pieces of information.

There are also a couple of other Hulton graves in the same cemetery. Which of George's children are you related to?

My last message may have been confusing. In researching the Cunning side of my husband's family, I also came across the name Doll as related to George Cunning. Are you related to them?

You asked me to email you, but I don't have your email address. Mine is sjohnson-labnet@att.net. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
