Homrighausen was a very small village in the former county of Wittgenstein-Berleburg in central Germany. In the early 1700s, the peasants were moved by the Count so that he could build a hunting lodge there. However, the surname Homrighausen came from the name of that village and is widespread in that region. Some came to America as early as the 1700s, but more came in the mid-1800s to Iowa, Kansas, and other destinations. Some were from the extant villages of Wunderthausen and Diedenshausen. The spelling variations no doubt came from US officials who could not cope with German
