I am looking for people that might have heard the same or similare ones, so we might compare.
1) One Humphrey killed a man over his dog.
2) One Humphrey was a small part Indian.. so he went out west to a reservation to investigate his Indian roots!!!!
If you ahve heard these stories.. Please contact me, so we might get the family tales put in a written form for new Humphrey generations!!!!

Humphrey family Bible

We have a Humphrey family Bible passed down through the family. The Bible was purchased in 1803 by Benjamin Taber. The earliest Humphrey entry is Henry Humphrey, born 1763 (must be retrospective). The last entry is Elizabeth Foote, died 1862. The Bible came from Ann Peasley, my gg-grandmother. We believe Ann was a Humphrey. The later generations of the family lived in upstate NY. Information in the Bible is sparse, but we are willing to share.

I am trying to find information on George W. Humphrey 1859 - ?

I am trying to find information on George W. Humphrey. He was born in 1859 in Ohio. I have found him in the 1910 Census listed twice in the Coal Perry County Ohio Census and the Perry County New Straitsville, Ohio Census. George W. Humphrey would be my great grandfather and John L was my grandfather. George W. was married to Sarah F. Humphrey (maidenname of MacEachen from Canada). They They had 6 children: John L (Leo), George A., Mary L. Daniel L., Clarence J. and Margaret E., In 1920 they are in 1920 Census living in Columbus, Ohio. In all of the Census reports George's father is from Virginia and his mother is from New York and he himself, was born in Ohio. In the 1930 Census only Sarah F and teo children, Clarence and Margaret Elizabeth are living at the 1920 address. There is a woman staying there as a boader named Louise Gabler and she is some type of relative...I was born in 1955 and I do remember her name and that she was relations on my grandfather's side. I found a marriage certificate for George W. and Sarah F. for April, 1890. The maiden name of MacEachen is on the marriage certificate and my grandfather's (john L. Humphrey's death certificate. I am trying to find out the parents of George W. to trace them back, unfortuanely, all of my uncles and aunts have passed away. I found one thread that mentioned that a George W. Humphrey lived in Colubus and died here in 1927. I do know that George W. is not related to the George W. in Belmount, Ohio. Any help would be appreciated. I can be contacted by email at jhumphrey@ee.net Thank you and have a good day.

John A. Humphrey

I know that Thomas married Mary Ann Thorn in London in 1827 and migrated to Australia. He appeared in the 1841 Census in NSW as a farmer in Berrima, NSW. The next year he was listed as insolvent. He must have moved to Sydney as there he was again insolvent twice more.

They had Charles Isis Scott in 1836, Frederick Thomas in 1841, Alfred in 1843 and Harriet in 1851 (although her birth is not in the NSW indexes).

With his interesting middle name, I am hoping that others who are related will notice this entry.

Frederick Thomas Humphrey was a member of Parliament in NSW.

Thomas died in 1864 and Mary Ann in 1870. They are both buried in the Camperdown Cemetery.

Regards
Sue

Hi - Ancestry has the NH 'Genealogies of the Families of Acworth' by Rev. J. L. Merrill 1869 on line. Starting on page 230 is the family of Abel Humphrey and Sarah Watkins of Ashford, CT. It looks like Abel's parents are Samuel Humphrey and Mary Carpenter and Sarah Watkins are Amasa Watkins and Ann Works. As can be seen the family below, on RootsWeb.com, is missing lots of dates and places as well as spouses of the grandchildren.
I am tracing my grandfather's family and on one of the birth certificates the name "Wash" is added before Humphrey. I have been able to trace back to between 1870 and 1893 when the Humphrey family had a housekeeping named Wash. I am working on the assumption (??!!) that the Humphrey descendents are a combination of this relationship. However, I cannot find any further details. Can anyone help me please. Pam

Hi,
I've traced one of my lines to Samuel Humphrey born 1656 in Connecticut, and married, in 1686, to Mary Mills b.1662. The problem being I supposedly descend from their daughter, also named Mary, b. 1681. Hmmm...she would have been 5 years old when her parents got married. If anyone else is doing research on these lines, I'd like to compare notes. Thanks.

As published in:
The Daily Advocate
Newark, Ohio
12-27-1882

Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey, widow of Jonah umphrey, died November 26, 1882, at the residence of James Dustheimer in Franklin township, at the great age of 92 years, 6 months and8 days. She was born in Loudoun county, Virginia, June 18, 1790, was married in 1810, removed to Ohio in 1817, and spent the last twenty years of her life in Licking county, having previously lived near Goshen church in Muskingum county, where she was buried. While a resident of this county, she held her membership in the Friendship Baptist Church. Her family name was Harrison, remotely related to the Virginia Harrisons of revolutionary fame. The venerable subject of this sketch had a numerous posterity, most of whom are still living. As near as can be ascertained her surviving descendants embrace 7 children, 42 grandchildren, 114 great grand children, and one of a still more remote generation, being of the fifth. (For further notice of her see our County History).

Humphrey Family of VERMONT (Goshen / Corinth) 1780's

I am looking for descendents of Arthur Humphrey, b. June 9, 1735 in Woodstock MA (now CT) d. 1812 in Goshen, NH, which I now understand is Goshen VT, not NH. Near Corinth. Moved to Goshen, NH in 1781 with his wife Mary Kingsbury, daughter of Josiah Kingsbury of Oxford, MA (they wre married on July 14, 1758).

Arthur above was the son of Ebenezer Humphrey b. 1741 d. 1784 orignially of Woodstock, MA (CT) and later Oxford, MA.

Chilren were:

Nabby (Abigail) b. 1759
John b. 1760 d. 1769
Ebenezer b. 1764
Bertha b. 1766
Josiah and Thomas Humphrey b. 1768
Arthur b. 1770 d. 1807 (Holland NY)
Molly b. 1772
Samuel b. 1774
Kate b. 1777

I have been able to trace the family back to what I believe is the original American ancestor of my line - but I am missing the VERMONT family connection! Would seem the line starts in Roxbury, MA in 1680's, then moves to Woodstock, MA (now CT), then Oxford, MA, then Goshen, NH (now VT), then to Holland, NY in 1807.

Family walked from Corinth / Goshen area of Vermont to Holland NY accompanied by oxcarts in 1807.

I once had some communication with a Humphrey from Vermont, but I told him my line had settled in NH. Now I realize that it probably was Vermont after all.

Arthur Humphrey

Humphrey Sanders theory

I am working on a theory in its very early stages: I think that my g-g-g-g-grandfather Sanders married a Humphrey in NC in the early 1800s. Then he and some of his family and some of the Humphrey family came to Dubois Co. Indiana in a wagon train. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

(see)
-Wales>Montana>Ks emig 1855 yes
-He emigrated to the United States in 1855. He settled in Youngstown, OH for 2 years prior to moving to Kentucky in 1857. The following year, he traveled to Little Stranger, Leavenworth Co., KS. In the spring of 1859, he went to Wabaunsee Co., near Wamego, and filed a land warrant. On 5-2-1859, he joined a Pikes Peak gold expedition. He had to pay his share of $40 and drive a team of oxen across the plains. When he arrived in Denver, he met up with some old friends. They convinced him that the gold expedition was a “humbug” so he turned around and went back home. His next trip took him to Emporia in August 1859 and then on to Burlingame where he worked on opening a coal drift for Joe Marple. After becoming ill, he quit and walked back to Leavenworth. An old friend happened along and convinced him to travel to St. Louis with him. Lewis labored in coal mining there until after the Civil War.
-In March 1866, he took a steamboat for Fort Benton, MT. It cost him $140 for cabin passage and he arrived there on 7-1-1866. Upon arriving, he traveled to Helena and then onto Virginia City where he mined for gold. In September 1869, he traveled to Lawrence, KS via Ogden, UT, Omaha, NE, and St. Joseph, MO. After arriving in Lawrence, he sent his gold dust to the US Mint and he earned $6000.
-While he was in Lawrence, he heard about the Welsh colony at Arvonia. While traveling through Osage and Lyon county, he thought about getting into the stock business. Once he arrived in Arvonia, he bought the supply store and eventually built a new store room across the street. He also kept the Post Office and had the only store in town for about a year. About 3 years later, he bought out the hardware stock of E.W. Burton & Johnson.
-1895 Arvonia farmer
-He was one of the leading men in Arvonia.
-He bought out James A. Whitaker’s store in Walnut Hall in 1870 and built his own store. It was a 2-story building.
-He served as a banker, postmaster, on the Township board and the treasurer.
-He would rather spend money on others than himself.
-The Arvonia school was held in the 2nd story of his store sometime in the years of 1870-1871.
-In 1871, the Methodist church met in the 2nd story of his store.
*C.R.
Need info on the family of Samuel Humphrey & Sarah Clough m. abt 1803 likely NH

Searching for information on the family of Samuel Humphrey and Sarah Clough. Her parent, Nathan Clough born abt 1754 of Brentwood, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and died 1806 Francestown, Hillsboro Co., NH and Sarah Johnson, were married 13 Jan 1778 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and had three children there, Nathan born 10 May 1778, John born 17 Aug 1780, and Sarah born 28 Jan 1783. This family must then have moved to NH and likely had more children. What happened to them after they left Woburn? Daughter Sarah and Samuel Humphrey married abt 1803 and had at least one daughter Mary born 1804/5 in NH who married, his third wife, Nathaniel Goodspeed Oct 1851 Puntney, Windham County, Vermont. Mary died 1857 and is buried in Clark Warren Cemetery, Marlboro, Windham County, Vermont with Nathaniel Goodspeed and his other three wives. I would appreciate any help with the family of Samuel Humphrey and Sarah Clough. When and where was Samuel born and who were his parents? When and where did he die? When and where did Sarah die. Did they have any other children? Thank you dave.richardson@mindspring.com

Marriage date for grandparents Humphrey/Anderson

Bringing my request up to date. I am looking for the marriage date of my grandparents, Henry B. Humphrey (could be listed as Bert) and Cora Lee Anderson. They are from Ballard Co., KY and their first child, my mother, was born there in Dec. of 1912. There is no record of their marriage in Ballard Co., therefore they must have gone elsewhere to marry. If there is anyone that can check what ever records that might be available for the year span 1912 to 1916 I would be most appreciative.

I have not been able to find them in the 1920 census and have checked in all states where they might have been. The story my mother told is that she was 7 yrs. old when the family arrived in CA. The last child to be born out of the state of CA was born in Ohio, Mississippi Co., MO Oct. 1919. Perhaps they missed the census because of traveling, but would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

I am looking for any information on Adelade Jenkins Humphrey. Father is listed as Phillip Jenkins, whom I have located in Larue County in both the 1860 and 1870 Census Records for Kentucky. Adelade is listed as the mother on the death certificate of a David L. Humphrey Born 1867 in Hart County, KY and Francis Marion Humphrey born in 1860 in Hart County. Other sons may include Elbridge, Ben, Hausley? and Elijah. Father is listed as Ben on Marion's death certificate and Reuben Suddeth on David L's. Adelade is suppose to be buried at or near Sonora, KY. She died in Louisville in 1914. I have not located them in the 1870 census but Josephine and these same children show up in the 1880 Hart County Census so they may have been missed in 1870 census taking.
OBIT Elizabeth Humphrey, 11-26-1882, Franklin twp, OH

The Daily Advocate
Newark, Ohio
December 27, 1882

Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey, widow of Jonah Humphrey, died November 26, 1882, at the residence of James Dustheimer in Franklin township, at the great age of 92 years, 6 months and 8 days. She was born in Londoun county, Virginia, June 18, 1790, was married in 1810, removed to Ohio in 1817, and spent the last 20 years of her life in Licking county, having previously lived near Goshen Church in Muskingum county, where she was buried. While a resident of this county, she held her membership in the Friendship Baptist Church. Her family name was Harrison, remotely related to the Virginia Harrisons of revolutionary fame. The venerable subject of this sketch had a numerous posterity, most of whom are still living. As near as can be ascertained her surviving descendants embrace 7 children, 42 grand children, 114 great grand children, and one of a still more remote generation, being of the fifth. (For a further notice of her see our County History).

THICK BRICK WALL, Need Help! Humphrey

Hi,
My father had an uncle by the name of Alfred Jessie May, Alfred was born May 24, 1881 in Seattle, Washington, the son of Samuel May and Virginia (White) May. Samuel May and Virginia White married in Seattle about 1880.

Samuel May was born in England about 1855

Virginia White was born in England about 1859

Following Samuel May's death in about 1890, Virginia moved to Nebraska where she met and married a man by the name of John Humphrey. We think that Virginia (White) May/Humphrey might have passed away sometime around 1924 and is buried somewhere in Nebraska.
There is a possibility that Alfred had siblings by the name(s) Helen, Mary, and Samuel, however we do not know if they were his natural siblings and went by the name of May or his step-sibblings and went by the name of Humphrey.
Alfred, using his step-father's last name of Humphrey, and giving a false date of birth (May 24, 1878) inlisted into to United States Army during the Spanish-American War on June 27, 1899 at St. Joseph, Missouri.
On a 1900 Military Census, while serving in Manilia, the Phillippine Islands, listed as Alfred Humphrey, he gave as his residence in the United States: Lincoln, Nebraska.
Alfred was discarged from the United States Army on June 26, 1902, at Fort Wayne, Michigan. From there he moved to Minnesota where he met and Married Virginia (Owsianny-Lawrence) on April 10, 1907 in Minneapolis. Alfred worked for Western Union in Minneapolis. He passed away on January 6, 1947, and is buried in Minneapolis.
If there is anyone out there who might have some information on Alfred's family either the May's or Humphrey's. Please contact me.

Thank you, Keith Lawrence

Lucinda Jane Humphrey

I have also seen her listed as Lurinda Humphreys & Lurrinda Jane Humphery. I have a marriage record dated 11/11/1890 for Effie J. Hatfield & William L. Walker, who lists her parents as C.P. Hatfield & Lurinda (or Lucinda) Humphreys. The marriage took place in Neal, Cumberland Co., IL. I have also found a marriage record listing for a Christopher Halfield/Lurinda Humphreys on 4/2/1870 that took place in Sullivan Co., IN. Research has turned up another marriage listing for a Christopher Paghish Hatfill/Lucinda Jane Humphrey with the same info. Lucinda's parents are listed as Wiley Humphrey & Miss Comes-in the 1870 census-Christopher & Lucinda can be found along with a Riley Humphrey with a wife named Jane. I think Riley is Wiley. I feel that this is the right family, but I can't find any record of Christopher & Lucinda having a child named Effie born in 1874. Any info would be appreciated as to who Effie's real parents are?
Martha

Humphreys in Mount Hope, or Pax Branch, WV

I have started researching my family history and can not seem to get any information on my maternal great grandparents side. My great grandfather went by the name of "Ward Humphrey". He married my great grandmother Fannie Woolwine (her maiden name was Fannie Swadder). She was a Native American Indian. They had my grandmother, Goldie Humphrey in 1903 in Mount Hope or Pax Branch, WV. My grandmother Goldie Humphrey married Lanta Pruitt and had 2-daughters, Dolly Marie Pruitt and Francis Pruitt. Dolly is my mother. If anyone has any information that could help me, please email me at: rockinreeds@ohiohills.com Thanks

(3) Jenifer Humphrey Eva's g-daughter, Netta, Evan Humphrey Geo. widow, Elsie with her g-daughter on her legs. July 2, 1959." (4) "Larry Sadler, Paul Sadler, Susan Lynn Sadler, Jenifer Humphrey, Joy Humphrey - Warren's daughter." (5) "Sept. 1918 Kentucky - Horace and Ellsworth."
One of the letters is addressed to Ellsworth Humphrey and is signed "your father, R.M.
HUMPHREY, Delia C. m. CONGDON, David P at Hartland, Niagara Co., NY

ISO: Proof of marriage between CONGDON, David P. and HUMPHREY Delia C.

Please forgive the long post. I have no primary-source proof of
marriage, which might name David's parents. According to a
secondary source "Humphreys in America," David P. CONGDON (b. abt. 1817 in VT or NY) m. 28 Aug 1839 at Hartland, Niagara Co., NY, Delia C.
HUMPHREY (b. 2 Mar 1821 at Orwell, Addison Co., VT).

Delia was the daughter of William Marcellus HUMPHREY and Maria/Mariah HALL. (William d. 26 Jan 1856 at Somerset, Niagara Co., NY. Maria/Mariah d. 12 Jul 1874 at Somerset, Niagara Co., NY, at the home of her son
Hon. Guy Carlton Humphrey).

Earlier Congdons were Quakers. Earlier Humphreys were Church
of England. I have not found church records for Niagara Co.

Any help with this marriage, especially if it yields the names of David's parents, will be sincerely appreciated and an offer of assistance is given in
return.

Thank you, Stephanie Schlick
Robert Charles Humphrey and Sophronia Bailey Humphrey

Robert Charles Humphrey reported to be born in TX c 1875 but I am unable to locate him until the 1910 census in Oregon with Sophronia. Trying to locate them in TX or New Mexico or Arizona pre 1910. First son Clyde Ernest Humphrey stated he was born in New Mexico. Sons are Clyde 1899NM-1977 Hilton 1903-1903 Guy 1906TX-1984 Robert 1907AZ-1988 Hugh W 1909AZ-1981 Daughters Annah 1911-1911 and Hellen 1913- ? Robert Died in Ukiah Calif in 1957 and Sophronia in Ukiah Calif 1948. Sophronia Bayley (Bailey on death certificat) listed in the 1880 Census in Denton Texas age 5 born in "Indian Nation" witch fits the story she told the family. She also told her daughter that Robert was wanted in Texas and changed his name. There is one photo of Robert standing in front of the Tombstone Meats Co. with a butcher's apron and a clever so it appears that they were in Arizone between 1900 and 1910. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

OBIT Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey, Newark, OH, 12-27-1882

As published in:
The Daily Advocate
Newark, Ohio
December 27, 1882

Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey, widow of Jonah Humphrey, died November 26, 1882, at the residence of James Dustheimer in Franklin township, at the great age of 92 years, 6 months and 8 days. As near as we can be ascertained, her surviving descendants embrace 7 children, 42 grand children, 114 great grand children, and one of a still more remote generation, being of the fifth.

George Wilson Humphrey

He is the son of John and Elizabeth (Lufkin) Humphrey; was born in Cumberland county, Maine, June 8, 1834. He left the school of his native town in 1852, and came to California. The first two years he spent in the Sacramento valley, clerking a portion of the time. Early in the spring of 1854 he went to the mountains, and drove cattle for two years, living at Forest City. . He then clerked for a time at Smith’s flat, near what is now Alleghany. In the spring of 1855 he had been employed on Langton’s pioneer express as a rider, and after a time established a saddle-train business on his own account, carrying the mail and express until 1859, when he moved his headquarters to Sierra valley, and ran a stage line to Virginia City, connecting with his saddle-train to Downieville. These he conducted until the completion of the Central Pacific railroad over the mountains. In 1864 he purchased and began to reside on the ranch he now owns. It consists of 1,500 acres of land, and he handles from one to two thousand head of cattle annually. Mr. Humphrey was married October 27, 1862, to Edith A. Lockhart, daughter of William and Mary A. Lockhart of Crawford county, Pennsylvania, where she was born September 18, 1844. Their children are Henrietta Elizabeth, born October 10, 1864; John E., September 17, 1866; Frank E., July 9, 1868; May Josephine, July 28, 1870; Herbert, January 3, 1872; James L., January 16, 1874; Jacob Butler, April 22, 1876; Susan Winnefred, March 22, 1878; infant daughter, July 7, 1881. Mr. Humphrey’s present residence and buildings were erected in 1879, a view of which may be seen elsewhere.

Illustrated History of Plumas, Lassen & Sierra Counties, with California from 1513 to 1850. - Fariss and Smith, San Francisco, 1882. p 266
