Andrew Jackson Umphreys/Humphreys/Humphrey

My husband's great grandfather was Andrew Jackson Umphreys, Humphreys, Humphrey. He was born in Illinois in 1853 or 1854. The first concrete evidence I have is his marriage certificate in Moultrie Co. Illinois showing his marriage to Hannah Jane Willis on 23 Oct 1873. His name is spelled Umphreys. I also find an Andrew J Umphreys in the 1860 census (age 7) and a John Umphreys (age 11) living with Henry Snider and his wife, Elizabeth, in Moultrie Co. Illinois. I believe this boy to be the same Andrew Jackson.
Later, I find he and Hannah Jane in Texas and the last name is spelled Humphreys. During his childrens' lifetime, the last name is spelled Humphrey. I have enormous amounts of information on Andrew Jackson and Hannah Jane and their descendents from the time they settled in Texas and later in Arizona. Desperately need help finding his earlier lineage.
Isaac Humphries/Humphreys of Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama

Hello,

I am looking for information about Isaac Humphries who was enumerated in the 1830 census of Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. I am trying to determine if he is the Isaac Humphries who was the son of John “the Saddler” and Catherine McElroy Humphries who lived in Wake Co., North Carolina and then Pendleton District South Carolina.

John and Catherine McElroy Humphries lived in Wake Co. NC from the time of their marriage, about 1768, to around 1800. Isaac was probably born there between 1770 and 1775. Isaac’s father John received a grant of land in Pendleton District SC in 1800. He was living there in 1808 when he died, leaving a will that mentioned Isaac. Isaac appeared in several real estate transactions in Pendleton District around that time. In the middle 1810s through 1822, Isaac appeared in records of Morgan Co. Ga., where he acted as guardian for the children of his sister, Rebecca Humphries Thomas. He may be the Isaac Humphries who was in Walton Co., Ga. for the 1820 census. I can’t find Isaac in any Georgia records after about 1822, but he was probably still alive in 1833, when his mother Catherine died and named him as a legatee in her will. Unfortunately, the will does not state where Isaac was living at the time.

After Isaac disappeared from Georgia, an Isaac Humphries showed up in the 1830 census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. This one is the right age (50-60 years old) to be the son of John and Catherine Humphries. In 1831, Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama took out a mortgage on property that included blacksmith tools, possibly indicating his profession. (Humphries family members on this line were frequently blacksmiths, saddlers or wheelwrights.) In 1837 he became involved in a dispute with William T. Terrell over the ownership of some slaves. In 1839, an Isaac Humphries received a grant of land in what appears to now be Fayette Co., Alabama. I have not found any records of him in Alabama or anywhere else after that. Isaac may have been in Alabama as early as 1826 when a Catherine Humphries married William Embry in Tuscaloosa County. It may be that this girl was named after her grandmother, Catherine McElroy Humphries.

An interesting note is that a James O. Humphries married Sarah Simpson in Tuscaloosa Co., AL in 1859. This Sarah Simpson is supposed to be the daughter of Elizabeth (Humphries) and William Darling Simpson of Chester Co., S.C. Elizabeth Simpson was a second cousin to the Isaac Humphries I am searching for. Their grandfathers, William Humphries and Charles Humphries, were brothers. Could James be a son or grandson of Isaac? A prior family tie might explain how Sarah Simpson, a Humphries descendant born in South Carolina, found and married a man named Humphries all the way out in Alabama.

It may be possible to test the theory that Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama was the son of John and Catherine McElroy Humphries. Y-DNA markers for descendants of John and Catherine Humphries have been established as part of the Humphrey(s) family project of the FamilyTreeDNA testing service. If James O. is descended from Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co., AL, AND Isaac is the one born to John and Catherine Humphries, there should be a Y-DNA match between James’s all-male line descendants and known all male-line descendants of John and Catherine Humphries. Several other lines of Humphries families have been documented in the FamilytreeDNA Humphrey(s) project, so if there is not a match with this family, maybe another match will be made.

Anyone eligible for testing against the Humphrey(s) Y-DNA group (male, last name Humphries with an all-male Humphries line back to James O. Humphries), and interested in doing so, can contact me or Mike Humphrey, the Humphrey(s) project administrator (mikenhumphrey@aol.com) to see about participating in the FamilyTreeDNA Humphrey(s) DNA project. A 37-marker test usually runs about $189, which isn’t cheap, but sometimes the company runs sales at a lower cost. Also, a couple of related families on the same line could pitch in to pay for the test.

Hope to hear from someone. Thanks for your time.

Charlene
I was looking at the information I've gathered online, and I was wondering if you know that birth years for John and Elinor Humphreys, or the names of others in your family line. Maybe some information you have would help me put the puzzle together on this end, also. Did you know there are Humphreys buried in Lloyd Cemetery in Ebensburg? Some of the grave markers are not legible anymore...only partly.

Family Bible records show that our Ann Humphreys was the daughter of William and Marry Humphreys. They were both born in Wales. Ann was born 4/13/1849. She married Thomas Bumford, (born 7/22/1843)son of Richard and Jane Bumford. Thomas and Ann were my husband's great grandparents. According to the 1860 Cambria County census that I found online, at that time, William and Mar(r)y had 6 children. There was also a John and Eleanor Humphreys in that census, who lived in Cambria Township, and had 5 children living at home. The 1850 census shows them having 3 more children still at home. I'm thinking maybe John was a brother of William?? A relative, at least, I would think. Very interesting! If I can help you with anymore information from what I've gathered, please let me know. Maybe you have some that I don't have, also. Thanks for the reply!

Do you have any link from your Ann Humphreys to her ancestors? I am descended from John & Elinor Ellis Humphreys who immigrated from Wales to the Ebensburg area circa 1841/1842. Their son David is my GG Grandfather. He migrated from Ebensburg to Clarion County about 1846/47.

Humphreys in Cambria County, Pennsylvania USA

My husband's grandmother was a Bumford (Myrtle). Her father was Thomas Bumford, a Civil War veteran. Thomas was born 7/22/1843, the son of Richard and Anne Bumford. He married Ann Humphreys (daughter of William & Mary Humphreys) on 11/7/1867. They had 8 children, and just after the birth of their youngest, Annie (6/5/1891), Ann(his wife) died. Thomas remarried on July 3,1895, to Jennie A. Walters (she had never been married before). There were no children to this marriage. Thomas died 1/28/1928. His first wife Ann died 6/24/1891 at the age of 42. (She was born 4/13/1849). They lived in "Cambria" and in Ebensburg, PA (Cambria County). Thomas' and Ann's children were William Richard(8/9/1868 - 8/8/1945), Ida (1871-1886), George Washington (1873-1957), Cora (1875-?), Myrtle (1883-1977), Webster (1885-?), Burley (1888-?) and Annie (6/5/1891-3/17/1922). All birthdates for the first 5 siblings were obtained from a family Bible, as was the wedding date for Thomas Bumford and Ann (Humphreys) Bumford; also the marriage date for Thomas and Jennie, except for the year, which appears to be 1895. Thomas, Ann and Jennie are all buried in Lloyd Cemetery in Ebensburg, PA, along with many of the Humphreys. Myrtle married William Stormer and they lived just outside of Ebensburg most of their lives. They had 9 children, all deceased now. Cleofa(Dolly), the oldest daughter, just died in 2009, just weeks before turning 100 yrs. old.
Good evening, Mark. Thank you for answering my message. I don't know what else I can tell you about Eupha Humphreys Carson. I only met her a couple of times. She didn't not have a relationship with her son, my husband Gordon. She either lost or gave up custody of him after his father joined the Army and was shipped to Europe. He was raised by his paternal grand-parents, Charles and Georgia Cheffings. From what he told me, he did live with his mother later but I don't know if it was during the war or some time after that. I don't know how long he lived with her. When I met him, he hadn't seen his mother in a number of years and she lived just sixty miles from Eugene. I don't believe I saw her half a dozen times after Gordon and I got married in 1972. I really don't know what else I can tell you. I would appreciate any information you might have about Eupha, her parents, grand-parents or brothers. Thank you again for contacting me.

Nancy A. Cheffings
cheffings@earthlink.net

PS: Would you be kind enough to tell me where you are located?

I believe this your John D. HUMPHREYS is the same one as I have researched.

He married Mary JOHNSON, 24 June 1840, Vigo county, Indiana. His brothers and mother (America D.) appear on the 1850 Coahoma Mississippi census. His father, John, died in 1850 in Indiana; in his Will, the eldest son is listed as "John D. Marks Humphreys." His brother, Felix Van Buren HUMPHREYS, listed being born 1837 in Vigo IN on his Civil War registration. My direct ancestor is their brother Joshua Badger HUMPHREYS.

John D. HUMPHREYS was pastor of the Christian Church in Unionville. He reorganized the Union Church in 1873. Many more entries can be found online for him doing weddings, etc.

I have not yet tracked John HUMPHREYS and America D. HUMPHREYS back to TN. There are many HUMPHREYS/IES/EY in White, Dickson, and other counties.

I trust this information will be helpful to you. I hope you receive it.
Thanks
It looks like the one, One of his sons John Harvey Humphreys is my grandfather. John H. married Rhonda Lloyd in Cedar County, Missouri and they had 2 sons and 3 daughters. From what my mother told me John D. lived in Missouri also and was a "Baptist preacher". John H. and family moved to Oklahoma and then on to New Mexico and then back to Minco, Oklahoma where he farmed. My mother Mary Elizabeth her 2 sisters Mable Clair & Helen stayed in Tucumcari, NM where I was born. Will and Otis went to Oklahoma and became farmers also.
I have a lot of info on them. Also a lot of unanswered questions. If you want to correspond directly my email address is jrbaum@sprynet.com. I've lived in Alaska since 1972.
Thanks again

If you go to Ancestry.com and do a search for Humphreys you'll see our correspondence. Below it is another posting which I'm going to copy and paste below.

Walter M. Humphreys born in Tennesse
HumphreysOKTX (View posts) Posted: 24 May 2009 3:07AM

Classification: Query
Surnames: Humphreys/Jones
This is my grandfather, Walter Humphreys, I can tell you that he was born March 20, 1881 in Tennessee. He was married to Nora Elizabeth Jones born May 15, 1888 in Arkansas. I was able to find his draft reg. card 1917-19-18.They lived in Oklahoma at that time and that is where my father was born, in Tulsa. My father was his only son, his name was Eugene (Gene) Chesley Humphreys born Dec. 1916-1978. There were also two older daughters. The daughters didn't have any children. So in my family my father was the last of the Humphreys as I have only sisters also. Walter and Nora were divorced when my father Gene was young and they lost contact. I would so appreciate any information, just to know where we came from ect....

Or you can find it by going to:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.humphreys/mb.ashx

This is all I have to go on.

Walter McClen Humphreys married Nora Elizabeth Jones(before 1909), don't know where.
He was born in March 20, 1881 Tennessee
She was born May 15, 1888 in Benton Co. Arkansas
They had three children:
Velma Clorene Humphreys born Jan. 21, 1909(Indian Territory)
Violet K. Humphreys born Aug. 25, 1912(Indian Territory)
Eugene(Gene) Chesley Humphreys born Dec.31,1916 Tulsa Ok.

Some time after(1918) they all moved to Houston,Texas. Walter and Nora divorced a few years later. I did find a draft registration from 1918 showing they were still married and living in Oklahoma and also a 1930 census showing Walter as single, living in Houston Texas.I don't know anything else about Walter. I have alot of information on Nora.In another 1930 Houston, Texas census, she had married a Olin W. Climax, shows my dad Gene as 13 years old.I know about Nora's parents and siblings ect... My grandmother(Nora),Aunts,Velma,Violet and Father Gene all died in Houston Texas.I do have all of their death dates.
Murder of Alvin Humphreys

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 26 May 1893 ...

The Payne's Store Tragedy

Alvin Humphreys Knocked in the Head With an Axe - His Wife Suspected

Alvin Humphreys, a citizen of Payne's Store about fifteen miles north of this city, was killed at his home last Friday night in a most blood curdling fashion. His head was battered into a jelly with an ax, and James Williams, a farmhand is under arrest charged with perpetrating the awful crime.

It was developed at the coroner's inquest that two years ago Humphreys married a Mrs. Paston, but a separation followed soon after their marriage. Humphreys went west and his wife continued to live on the farm. James Williams, the man charged with the crime, worked upon the farm during the interval of their separation. About a week before the tragedy, Humphreys returned from the west and joined his wife. They were living together at the time of the killing.

Last Friday night Mrs. Humphreys went to the home of her brother, about one mile and a quarter distant, and aroused him. She related the following story to him: About 11 o'clock she heard a knock at the door while she and her husband were in bed. She asked who was there. "It is me," was the reply, "and I want my coat and vest," in a voice she recognized as James Williams. She then went to the door and opened it, and allowed him to enter. She then started to light a lamp and her husband was in the act of getting out of bed, when Williams struck him on the head with an axe. She immediately left for her brother's place and gave the alarm. It is said that this version of the affair is at variance with the one she gave to the coroner. To him she stated that there were two men instead of one.

The Accused Attempts Suicide

Williams was arrested Sunday at the home of his brother. Upon his arrest he asked to be taken to Mrs. Humphreys'. The request was granted. When before Mrs. Humphreys, she said, "Jim, you killed him, you know you did. Why in the name of God did you do it?" Williams shook his head and walked away. Shortly afterward he borrowed a pocket knife from a bystander and raising his manacled hand Williams plunged the knife into his own throat, and when the knife was taken away from him by the officers he tried to enlarge the would with his fingers. He was securely bound and taken to Greenville and jailed. Williams proclaims his innocence of the crime. He states that he can prove an alibi and that the Paston boys are the guilty parties. He says he attempted suicide because he abhorred the idea of being locked up. It is believed that the killing of Humphreys is the result of a conspiracy and Mrs. Humphreys is suspected of being an accomplice. She is under arrest, also her two brothers, Jess and Bob Paston.

The murder has created a deep feeling of indignation among the citizens of Hunt County, as it made the third tragedy which as occurred in the county during the short period of one week. Williams had a preliminary hearing at Greenville Tuesday and was remanded to jail without bail.

Baptism or parentage of ELLIS HUMPHREYS born 1766/8.

Does anyone have any information regarding the baptism or parentage of ELLIS HUMPHREYS born 1766/8.
He married Dorothy Williams at Llanrhaiadr y Mochnant in 1794 and the family lived at Bwlchsych, Hirnant. He died 1851. Surviving children were Jane (1796), Elizabeth (1798), David (1803/4), Ellis (1805), Elinor (1810), Humphrey (1815).
The 1841 census indicates he was born "in the county" (Montgomeryshire) but the registration could well be over the border in Denbighshire or even Merionethshire or Shropshire.
