Hello,
There were still Humphries in Wales in the twentieth century. My Grandfather, Arthur Hunphries came from Tiger bay, Cardiff to Poole, Dorset. He had brothers who became 'navvies' on the railways in South America. My Father George Lloyd Humphries worked in Yeovil, Somerset.
I was Cynthia Phyllis Humphries, I've been a Black for 40 years.
Also check our Exmouth in Devon, there are a number of Humphries families here. Possibly from the Honiton connection, as Exmouth is about twenty miles from Honiton
Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama

Hello,

I am looking for information about Isaac Humphries who was enumerated in the 1830 census of Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. I am trying to determine if he is the Isaac Humphries who was the son of John “the Saddler” and Catherine McElroy Humphries who lived in Wake Co., North Carolina and then Pendleton District South Carolina.

John and Catherine McElroy Humphries lived in Wake Co. NC from the time of their marriage, about 1768, to around 1800. Isaac was probably born there between 1770 and 1775. Isaac’s father John received a grant of land in Pendleton District SC in 1800. He was living there in 1808 when he died, leaving a will that mentioned Isaac. Isaac appeared in several real estate transactions in Pendleton District around that time. In the middle 1810s through 1822, Isaac appeared in records of Morgan Co. Ga., where he acted as guardian for the children of his sister, Rebecca Humphries Thomas. He may be the Isaac Humphries who was in Walton Co., Ga. for the 1820 census. I can’t find Isaac in any Georgia records after about 1822, but he was probably still alive in 1833, when his mother Catherine died and named him as a legatee in her will. Unfortunately, the will does not state where Isaac was living at the time.

After Isaac disappeared from Georgia, an Isaac Humphries showed up in the 1830 census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. This one is the right age (50-60 years old) to be the son of John and Catherine Humphries. In 1831, Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama took out a mortgage on property that included blacksmith tools, possibly indicating his profession. (Humphries family members on this line were frequently blacksmiths, saddlers or wheelwrights.) In 1837 he became involved in a dispute with William T. Terrell over the ownership of some slaves. In 1839, an Isaac Humphries received a grant of land in what appears to now be Fayette Co., Alabama. I have not found any records of him in Alabama or anywhere else after that. Isaac may have been in Alabama as early as 1826 when a Catherine Humphries married William Embry in Tuscaloosa County. It may be that this girl was named after her grandmother, Catherine McElroy Humphries.

An interesting note is that a James O. Humphries married Sarah Simpson in Tuscaloosa Co., AL in 1859. This Sarah Simpson is supposed to be the daughter of Elizabeth (Humphries) and William Darling Simpson of Chester Co., S.C. Elizabeth Simpson was a second cousin to the Isaac Humphries I am searching for. Their grandfathers, William Humphries and Charles Humphries, were brothers. Could James be a son or grandson of Isaac? A prior family tie might explain how Sarah Simpson, a Humphries descendant born in South Carolina, found and married a man named Humphries all the way out in Alabama.

It may be possible to test the theory that Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama was the son of John and Catherine McElroy Humphries. Y-DNA markers for descendants of John and Catherine Humphries have been established as part of the Humphrey(s) family project of the FamilyTreeDNA testing service. If James O. is descended from Isaac Humphries of Tuscaloosa Co., AL, AND Isaac is the one born to John and Catherine Humphries, there should be a Y-DNA match between James’s all-male line descendants and known all male-line descendants of John and Catherine Humphries. Several other lines of Humphries families have been documented in the FamilytreeDNA Humphrey(s) project, so if there is not a match with this family, maybe another match will be made.

Anyone eligible for testing against the Humphrey(s) Y-DNA group (male, last name Humphries with an all-male Humphries line back to James O. Humphries), and interested in doing so, can contact me or Mike Humphrey, the Humphrey(s) project administrator (mikenhumphrey@aol.com) to see about participating in the FamilyTreeDNA Humphrey(s) DNA project. A 37-marker test usually runs about $189, which isn’t cheap, but sometimes the company runs sales at a lower cost. Also, a couple of related families on the same line could pitch in to pay for the test.

Hope to hear from someone. Thanks for your time.

Charlene
Here is the information that I found:

On March 16, 1627, 23-year-old John Humfrey (Humfreys) testified that while he was aboard the Plantation, he saw Robert Cooke and Thomas Lawley fight, and Lawley's chest was badly injured. In September 1656 John Humfrey's will was proved. He was from Honiton, in Devon, but died in Virginia. Adminsitration of his estates was given to his brother, Henry Humfrey (MCGC 145-146; EEAC 31). (Virginia Immigrants and Adventures, 1607-1635)

Hi. We may be working th same line. My info ends with John who married Anne North. Both born 1655 Middlesex Va. Seems like a lot of others have traced to that point and then it stops. Wondering if they had emigrated at that point. Planning to go overseas if I can nail down some more info. My work shows on this website. Harry Hobson Humphries was my grandfather. Thanks Mike Humphries

Hi!
I'm trying to determine where my paternal great-grandfather, David Horswell Jesse Humphries, hailed from. All I have to go on is my Grandparent's marriage certificate. I know he died in his 80's in December 1940 and is buried in Feilding New Zealand. He was a Baker & established the Bunnythorpe Bakery in 1893.
His wife was Mary Stevens. She was 80 when she died in 1936.
My Grandfather, Percival Alan Humphries was born in 1885 in Feilding NZ. He was a painter. He died in 1930 or early 1931 shortly after my father was born. His wife was Minnie Augusta nee Voss of Halcombe New Zealand.
My father was Ian Percival Humphries born 12 October 1930 & died 9 July 1978.
My father had 3 sisters, Rene, Evelyn & Lola. All are now deceased.
My father married June nee Ross in April 1953. They lived in Palmerston North New Zealand. My mother is now 76.
We have had virtually no contact with any other Humphries from this family as my paternal grandmother was of German decent & considered "The Enemy" during the 1st & 2nd world wars!!
I am Megan Jane Humphries born 23 May 1962. I have 3 siblings. Carl Robert born 20 Jan 1954, Dianne Peta born 22 June 1955 & Kevin David born 17 Dec 1956.
I have 2 children. Elliot Jack O'Donnell born 10 July 1979 & Sophie Hannah Scott born 24 Sept 1984. My partner of 26 years is Robert William Scott of Feilding NZ.
I hope this is useful information for you & that you may be a help to me also.
Regards,
Meghann (yes I changes the spelling of my name)Humphries

Re: John Locke Humphries b. 1836; KY > TX

What I have so far...corrections and additions welcome.

JOHN LOCK HUMPHRIES, judge of the county court of Erath county, Texas, is a native Kentuckian, the son of Charles and Mary Humphries. Both father and mother are native Kentuckians, but the respective families were originally from Virginia and South Carolina.
The subject of this sketch, John L. Humphries was educated in his native State, and was graduated from the law school from Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1871.
Before he left Kentucky he served as sheriff of Trigg county in 1867 and 1878, and practiced law there for two years. He was tendered and declined a renomination. He was also tendered a nomination by the Democracy of Trigg county for the Legislature (which would have amounted to an election) which he declined, and then commenced reading law, graduating in 1871.
In the war of 1861-5, he served in the Second Kentucky Conlederate Cavalry, in Forrest's command until after the battle of Chicamauga, and consecutively with Wheeler's and Hampton's Cavalry, and at the close of the war in the Kentucky brigade, and was in all the battles fought by the commands with which he served. He came down into Georgia with President Davis.
Judge Humphries came to Texas in the fall of 1872, and commenced the practice of law in Fort Worth. He then removed to Kaufman county, and soon afterwards to Erath county, in 1884, where he settled permanently and engaged in the practice of his profession. He is at present (1889) the judge of the county court of Erath county.
He has taken an active part in politics and represents his county in Democratic conventions. He was chairman of the executive committee of the anti-Prohibition party for Erath county, and made a number of able speeches on the subject.
He is a deacon of the Baptist church, and in 1874 he was selected by the ablest men of the church from every section of the State, among them the Rev. Dr. Burleson, of Waco, to preside over the ecclesiastical court which adjudicated the case of Elder A. Fitzgerald. His decisions were marked by accurate knowledge of the law and legal acumen and were highly satisfactory.
In his recent race for judge of the county court he was nominated at the Democratic primaries by a majority of five hundred, but he was opposed by the Union Labor party. Knights of Labor, the Alliance, Prohibitionists and Republicans, all the isms combining on a so-called Democrat, and his majority was one hundred and ninety-one votes. He is highly capable and perfectly equipped legally to discharge the duties of his office. He has the esteem and confidence of the people of Erath county. From a book:Personnel of the Texas State Government, with Sketches of Distinguished Teaxns. By L. E.
I found James, in the 1860 Census for Alabama, Tuscaloosa Western Division Lovington? post office. Dated 26 July.

James O Umphryes age 26 estate worth $250/880 born Alabama
Sarah age 17 born in Alabama

I'm still looking for him, in 1850. Yes, the Humphryes/Humphries/Humphreys/Umphreys/Humphress, etc. name is hard to research. This is not my direct line, but I like to research all that pertains to this surname.

Ethel

Sorry about the bad math, this Marianna would have been 24, in 1862. That's what I do when I get too many irons, in the fire.

Anyway, I found another person, Adalaide Humphries, who would fit her age, in Alexandria County, but it seems this girl died, in 1861. I know that Mary Ann had to have been somewhere, in 1850 and 60 and I do understand the problem that you've had, in finding, for certain, her parents. It is possible that she went by another name, during those years. I've found that to be so, in my own family. I will keep looking, though.

Ethel

I found one researcher that says that Mary Ann Humphries, who married Charles Griffeth, in 1862, is the daughter of Abner and Lucy Ann Dillon. Abner seems to have died in the 1840's. Now, I did find the following:

1850 Virginia Alexandria County, Alexandria City

Reuben Johnson 40 Lawyer $4000 VA
Mary E. 28 Maryland
Elizabeth 32 VA
Ann E. 9
roseanna Medella 21
William Stabler 55
Deborah Stabler 54
Rachel Hener? 76 Pennsylvania
Marianna Humphreys 12 Virginia
Lilly (Col) Woman 28

So, if she was orphaned, at an early age, this may be her. The age fits, because she would have been 20, in 1862.

Abner Humphries born 1812, King George County, VA married Lucy Ann Dillon 18 July, 1838, according to the above mentioned researcher.

Abner is said to be the son of John S. Humphries and Lucinda H. Grant. It is very possible, that this Grant is where the Cherokee Indian comes in. I have some, who it is said married into the Coody family. Not a direct line, but the Coody, of my branch is Cherokee.

I do hope, that this helps a little.

Ethel

Patti,

I have some information, on the Humphries, in Louisiana. May I ask, who did your Mary Ann marry? This will help me, to possibly get you some information.

There is a Mary Humphries, born in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, about 1845, daughter of John Humphries and Sarah A. ? John is said to have been born about 1808, in Tennessee and Sarah A, born about 1818, in Mississippi. Siblings, of this Mary are John Jr. born about 1842, in Louisiana and Francis [female] born about 1848. John, was a Mechanic. Ref: 1850 Catahoula Parish, Louisiana Census.

I found this info, for James Humphries, 1850, Liberty County, Texas: James Humphries born about 1815, in Louisiana. A farmer. Jane, wife, born about 1815, in Louisiana. Children: Pricella 16 born TX; Ellen 14; Loretta 12; Elizabeth 10; James 4; Mary Ann 2. [all born in Texas].

Daniel Humphress, also had a daughter born about 1838, in Louisiana.

Ethel Coody

Ethel: Actually some of what you sent me i believe points to my Mary A Humphries. I was on ancestry.com last night checking out what you sent me and found a whole TREE that included my Mary married to Charles Naylon (I knew it was an 'N') Griffith etc., parents listed and all - Only difference was that Mary A's father Abner, had 1/2 siblings: Abner's father was John S Humphries and Mother was Lucy Ann Dillon. Lucy must have died and John re-married Lucinda GRANT and had children. I sent an email out to the person who's TREE it was - and am awaiting a responds. I what to know where he got his info on the Marriage of Mary A Humphries and Charles N. Griffith....
You have been a trememdous help and i truly appreciate everything you've done - Let me know if you find anything else - and i will do the same. Thanks so much again, patti
Ethel:

Now your name is interesting - as one of Mary A Humphries' sons had a daughhter "Ethel".

But back to Mary A. She married Charles Griffith in May 1862 in Alexandria VA. I have a copy of the Certificate. He was in VA enlisted for the Union - Civil War. The certificate has no parents listed and Mary A Humphries claims to be 20 Yrs Old. Other cencus records list her at different ages and born in multiple places: VA, PA, MD. Somewhere in our ancestry this is a female Cherokee Indiana. Though my mother doesn't believe it to be this Mary - who knows. Unfortunately, I can't even verify any Mary A Humphries i find, as i have no info on her prior to this marriage, other than she supposedly was from/born in VA. ANYTHING you can offer would be a hugh help, and has already left me thankful for what you already have shared. does this info help at all? The also by 1870 on lived in the Plymouth Meeting / Norristown / Black Horse area in PA. Thanks again for all your assistance. Patti
Deborah - was reading your post from April 8, 2008 and noticed that you mention a grand-daughter of John Humphries: Mary Ann Humphries. I have been trying (in vain) to locate information on a Mary A Humphries who married Charles Griffith in Alexandria VA in 1862. He was there due to the Civil War. This Mary has claimed to be born in Virginia, Maryland and PA. And her birth year could be any where from 1838 and 1841 ish. She could have also had Cherokee background.
Do you have any info on 'your' Mary A Humphries, or have any suggestions where i might find info? Thanks so much - Patti pattigd@saxonyllc.com

He was married to Sadie Bell Brown she died before him. They had no children. But he did have a brother William and a sister Lucinda.Lucinda is my ggggggrandmother.

My lineage goes back to 1800's.Pelham Humpries left Tennesse in 1834 or there about, with wife Sadie Bell Brown. They received a land grant ,for what was then part of Spain.I have a copy of the deed.He was killed by William English in 1835.His land later became the Spindletop oil field.(1907).Our linage was traced by the firm of "Brooks and Baker" from England. They also trace the family trees of Preidents and Royals. This story would make a great book! I hope to write it one day!
