Humphries Ancestry

I am looking for any information on the Humphries family line. The line in particular is of John William Humphries b 1853. I have very liitle info on the male Humphries with the last person I have is:

John Humphries b: 1655 Middlesex, VA d: 1725 Middlesex, VA who married Ann North 1655-1730. Their son Joseph umphries 1702-1769 who married Elizabeth Tignor. Their son Uriah L Humphries 1740-1817 who married Nancy Burke. Their son Elijah U Humphries 1804-1881 who married Elizabeth Alexander. Their son Joseph N. Humphries 1828-1898 who married Mary McCullars. Which brings me back to John William Humphries. Out line continues with John married to Eliza Alexander. Their son Thomas S. Humphries 1898-190 who married Deamer Dodson sometime before 1915 when their son Cecil Franklin Humphries was born in Arkansas (my husband's grandfather). Cecil's parents Thomas and Deamer both died in 1920 in Anderson, New Madrid Missouri (I have both of their death certificates) and was raised by his grandmother and step-grandfather Elisa Alexander and Newton Lesley. Either in Missouri or in California, Cecil married Ruby Viola Brooks. At some point after 1930, but before 1945 he moved to Contra Costa County, California. His first son was born in 1945 Cecil Dale Humphries. Then they had 2 more children Sharon Kay and Eugene Benjamin Humphries before Ruby died in 1973. Cecil Dale Humphries sometime before 1966 married Daine Lynn Barton and had 5 children together before they divorced sometime in the 1970's. Their children are Gary Humphries b: 1966 (my husband), Denise b: 1968, Lisa b: 1969, Christie b: 1971 and Shawna b: 1972.

I anyone has any information about wifes, children, parents, grandparents and anything about anyone in this line it will be greatly appreciated!!

Can anyone help me as I am unable to locate the passenger list for George Humphries and his family who left the UK around 1893 - 1894. George was born 6/6/1854 Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire and was married to a Catherine Ellen Pictor, they emigrated with their children: Wilfred, Lottie, Hilda, Edith, Gladys, and Dorothy. I have managed to locate them on the 1900 US census and they appear to have moved to Sierra Madre, California. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would love to hear from any American relations.

Thomas C. Humphries abt 1849-1927

Thomas Cowell Humphries, aka Charles Humphries on one census, was born about 1849 in Canada, and died about Dec 1927, in Columbus, Ohio. He married Louise Augusta Albright and in 1878 had a daughter, Elizabeth Sophia Humphries, who married Frank Cloud. He may have lived in New Brunswick before coming to Columbus.

Is this sounding familiar to anyone?

Kathy

I hope someone can help me locate Uriah's biography. Some nice person shared it with me some time ago but I have since misplaced it. It was a treasure and spoke about his sturdy wife or woman who bore him several children and looked like she was able to produce more (maybe not in those words. It spoke about the men that worked for him and those that begged for corn, etc. It is something that showed the way of life in the early 1800's in the South and was wonderful reading. It in no way covered all he did in life but gave a wonderful retrospective. Thank you so much and you may use my email address bjchilders@onemain.com.

Humphries from Kansas to Lancashire

Although I have had some success in tracing my Humphries family tree back to late 1700s, I am not confident about the early life of my grandfather Charles (Charley) Humhries). Charles appears in the 1901 UK census living in Gorton Lancashire with parents William (born abt 1861 in Bilston, Staffs, England) and Priscilla (born about 1864 in Manchester, Lancs, England)Humphries. The census states that Charles (Charley) was born in `Kansis City` although a British Subject. Charles` siblings - Albert (born 1884 in Georgetown USA) and Edith (born about 1886 in Georgetown USA) are also identified as British Subjects which I understand means that they were born to British born immigrants to the US in the US. There were further siblings William, Priscilla, Lewis and Cora, all born in the UK. I have not been able to obtain a birth certificate for Charles from either Kansas City, Kansas or Kansas City Missouri (I think the children were probably born in Missouri as both Kansas and Georgetown are in that State). I also have not found a marriage certificate for William and Priscilla either in US records or English ones. I am querying whether the children were born to both parents or only one of them. I can trace William through the 1901, 1881, 1871 and 1861 UK census but not the 1891 census when I assume he was in the US. I cannot trace Priscilla back without a maiden name so have hit a dead end with her. Is there anybody who knows any information about this family..anything would help? Thanks Anne Jackson nee Humphries

Three Humphries / Humphreys Families of Mississippi

I am researching 3 Humphries / Humphreys families of Mississippi that I believe are related. My ancestor was Phebe Humphries Sutton (b. 1803 Jefferson County, MS, d. 1851 Tensas Parish, LA), and I am trying to find her parents. In the 1830 Jefferson County probate of her husband Thomas Sutton, a group of possible relatives of Phebe purchased items from the estate sale. These people are in Family #1 (shown below).

Family #1: Elizabeth McDonald Humphries Family

(sources: Mildred Brady Venitucci, Melanie Nolan, and DeeDee ___ from RootsWeb.com)

Elizabeth McDonald, d. in Jefferson Co., MS, married ____ Humphries.
Children:

 John McDonald Humphries
 Margaret Humphries married Daniel Osteen in Jefferson County, MS, on 4 August 1828. Margaret was born about 1810-1815. Daniel Osteen purchased items from the estate of Thomas Sutton on January 5, 1831.
 Richard Humphries (spelled Humphrey, also purchased items from the estate of Thomas Sutton), died in 1837.
 David Humphries, married Elizabeth Allen. Known child: Elijah Jefferson Humphreys, b. 1825-1830 Jefferson Co. Elizabeth married second to Hampton Pennington.
 Mariah Humphries married Stephen Allen in 1829 Jefferson County, MS (Stephen also purchased items from the estate of Thomas Sutton. William S. Allen officiated the marriage of Thomas Sutton and Phebe Humphries in 1820, Jefferson County).
In 1820, Elizabeth McDonald Humphries remarried to Samuel Culberston Brady in Jefferson County, MS. At least one child: Stephen Alexander Brady.

The following information was posted by Glen Brady (descended from Stephen Alexander Brady) on the RootsWeb Humphries Board:
As best I can tell, Elijah Jefferson Humphries was the son of David and Elizabeth Allen Humphries, born in Jefferson Co, MS between 1825 and 1830. David Humphries died between 1830 and 1850. Elizabeth A. Humphries married Hampton Pennington between 1835 and 1840. At that time he was a widower. She apparently had family in the Livingston Parish, La. area who had migrated from South Carolina. I can not explain how the other family members ended up in La and how she ended up in MS. David Humphries' mother was named "Elizabeth" and her maiden name was either "Osteen", "Robinette", or "McDonald". I have not determined her first husband's first name. "Elizabeth Humphries" married "Samuel Brady" in Jefferson Co, Ms in 1821. Elizabeth’s children from her first marriage were 1) Margaret, 2) David, 3) Richard, and 4) Mariah. As best I can tell, her only child from the second marriage was Stephen Alexander Brady, my ggg-grandfather. Hope this helps you.

On April 22, 1835, Stephen Allen (husband of Mariah Humphries) and Phebe Humphries Sutton sold land in Claiborne County, MS, to John B. Thrasher. The land was “lot number one eight and sixteen section no. 26 township no. 13 of range no. one east containing 160 and 40/100 acres.” John B. Thrasher was a prominent lawyer in Claiborne County and, according to Tensas Parish land records, owned a plantation in Tensas Parish called “Yucatan”. John’s wife was Eliza Eagan/Egard, whom he married in Virginia.

According to DeeDee, whom I met on the RootWeb Humphries message board: in 1803, John Humphreys sold land to John Egard near Nathan Allen’s land in St. Helena Parish (which was part of the Mississippi Territory until 1810 when LA became its own state). John Humpheys has been mentioned as a possible husband to Elizabeth McDonald.

In 1851, Margaret Sutton (daughter of Phebe Humphries Sutton), now a resident of Tensas Parish, sold land to Henry McDonald (related to Elizabeth McDonald Humphries?) in Jefferson Co. Seventy seven and 94/100 acres being the east half of the north west Quarter of section no. fifty-five township nine range two east. In 1852, Thomas and John Sutton ( Phebe’s sons), now residents of Tensas Parish, sold land to Henry McDonald. The north east quarter of section no. fifty-five in Township No. Nine of Range No. Two East in the District of Lands west of Pearl River and containing seventy-seven 93/100 acres in Jefferson Co.

The following family is interesting because they lived near Thomas Sutton and Phebe Humphries, and they had family members named Phebe. Family members had a tendency to travel together in groups and to use the same family names over and over.
Family #2: Jonathan Humphreys Family
Source: Glen Brady, who is descended from Family #1
Jonathan Humphreys was born September 20, 1722. Phoebe Humphreys (his wife?) was born June 26, 1723. (source: “Bible of George W. Humphreys” from Pike-Amite-Walthald Library System, 114 State Street, McComb, MS 39648) . They were probably born in VA. Probable child:
• Eustace Humphreys, born November 25, 1753, died April 5, 1815, (according to Bible record). Married Mary _____. Bible record shows that Mary Humphreys died March 17, 1813. One of the earliest official references to Humphreys / Humphries was the 1792 Spanish Natchez Territory Census: Just Humphreys in Villa Gayoso and Eustace Humphreys. Eustace was granted 200 acres of land on Cole’s Creek in 1798.
Eustace Humphreys is an unusual name. This name is found in these sources:
 Hustis Humphrys, 1810 Mississippi Territory Census
 Eustace Humphreys, bill of sale to Cato West, August 24, 1802, Jefferson County, MS
 Hughstress Humphrey witnessed a land transaction of Lewis Davis to John Norwood of Edgecomb County, NC, 1757: “100 pounds gold and silver money of Virginia.”
 Eustis Humlphrey, deed of sale, 1745, Edgecomb County, NC
 Benjamin Lane to Hustriss Humphrey of Edgecomb County, 1745, “10 pounds current money of Virginia 100 acres.”

Possible children of Eustace Humphreys, according to Humphreys listed in the “Bible of George W. Humphreys”
• Ann Brighty Humphreys b. Sept. 14, 1773
• Stephen Humphreys b. Sept. 5, 1775
• Joel Humphreys b. Sept. 22, 1777, died March 4, 1813.
• Lewis Humphreys b. March 19, 1782
• Mary Humphreys b. May 20, 1784
• Uriah Humphreys b. Friday, March 18, 1788, died Friday, October 5, 1860. According to Jefferson County courthouse records, Uriah Humphries married Nancy Atwood in 1811. Nancy Humphries, wife of Uriah Humphries, is listed in an 1817 obituary form Clark County, GA. Uriah married second to Catherine C. Brown on Oct. 23, 1817 according to Bible record. According to Bible record, Catherine C. Humphreys died Aug. 20, 1858, 64 years old. Uriah was born around 1788 in Mississippi, according to the 1850 and 1860 censuses. In the 1840 census, he was living near the Mrs. P. Sutton household, and was living next door to Jonathan Humphreys. Uriah’s parents were probably living in Jefferson County in the central to eastern portion at the time of his birth in 1788.. This area was referred to as the “Scotch Settlement” because it was settled by the Scots as early as the 1760’s. Uriah first appeared in the censuses in 1820 in Franklin County (NOTE: Thomas Sutton, husband of Phebe Humphries, first appeared in Mississippi in 1820 in Franklin County). Possible child:
Catherine Humphries, married Daniel Patterson. Uriah sold this land to this couple in the 1840’s: NW ¼, Section 12 / T8N-R3E, Jefferson County (NOTE: Phebe left land to her children, which was located in Township 9).
Uriah Humphries is an unusual name. Another Uriah Humphries served in the American Revolution in Botetourt County, WV, and is in the DAR Patriot Index. In Botetourt County, he is listed in the Order Book from 1771 – 1792, performing many services for the county. This Uriah was the 5th child of Joseph Humphries and Elizabeth Tigner of Northumberland County, VA. Uriah’s wife’s name was Nancy Burts. He is found in Clark County, GA, from 1805 until his death in 1816.
Family #2, continued:
RootsWeb Message Board, Mike Hillman query
Query: Looking for relatives of Uriah Humphreys (b. 1700), Jonathan Humphreys (b. 1722), Eustace (Eustice) Humphreys (b. 1753) married Ann Brighty (Brighton). Eustace and Ann Humphreys had the following children:
1. Stephen b. 1775 married Sara Smith
2. Joel b. 1777
3. Lewis b. 1782
4. Mary b. 1784
5. Uriah v. 1788 married Catherine Brown
6. Jonathan b. 1792 married Lodotia Woolly
7. Phoebe born 1793
8. William born 1795

Family #3 is one of the oldest and most prominent Humphreys families in Mississippi. They lived north of Jefferson County in Claiborne County. I included this family because 1) family #3 and family #2 both named children George W. and David for several generations, and 2) Phebe Humphries Sutton sold land in Claiborne County in 1835. I wondered if she inherited the land from relatives in Claiborne County.
Family #3: George Wilson Humphreys Family of Claiborne County, MS
(source: Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, published in 1891)
The Humphreys family is an English family, and the name has been traced back to the 11th century. “The family was early divided into six branches, each one of which had a special coat of arms, all of which may be seen in the Herald office at London, where they have been since 1340.” (p. 983)
Generation 1
Col. Ralph Humphries was the son of Ralph Humphries of Virginia and North Carolina. Col. Humphries married in 1768 to Agnes Wilson of VA. She was the niece of James Wilson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Col. Humphries and Agnes settled in Hampshire Co., WV, and later moved to South Carolina. Col. Humphries served in the American Revolution. After the war, he left his wife in SC. She sold the plantation an went to Tennessee, sailing down the Tennessee, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers in 1788, landing at the famous Grindstone Ford landing of the north fork of the Bayou Pierre river on September 10 (p. 980 and 983). The country was under the Spanish governor, Gayoso, at that time. Ralph died a few months after the move in 1789. His wife remarried to Col. Daniel Burnett, a Spanish officer. The plantation is still owed by G. Wilson Humphreys (see Generation 4).
Generation 2
1. Ralph, accidentally killed at the age of 14 when he was thrown by a Choctaw pony.
2. Capt. G.W. (George Wilson, p. 980) Humphreys was born in SC on March 23, 1771 and died December 15, 1843. Married Sarah, daughter of Capt. David Smith, “who came from her native state of TN to MS in her girlhood, settling near Clinton.” Married on January 17, 1792. She was born January 19, 1776 and died December 20, 1817. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church “as were most of the Humphreys”. (Note:Her sister married Hiram J. Reynold, 4th governor of MS.) They had 3 sons and 3 daughters who lived to marry, the rest dying in childhood.
Generation 3
David G. Humphreys was born May 17, 1794 and died January 11, 1871. Married Mary Cobun in 1820, “a native of this county, a descendant of an early settler of this region, Samuel Cobun, Sr.” She was born July 31, 1794, died July 19, 1874. David and Mary are buried at the Hermitage in Claiborne County. They had 5 sons and 2 daughters, “the eldest son and daughter who died young.”
Generation 4
1. G. Wilson Humphreys, born on Oakland Plantation on which he is still living on September 16, 1819. “One of the oldest and most successful planters, as well as one of the oldest settlers of Claiborne County.” Married Cathrine B. Prince who was born August 24, 1824, a graduate of Port Gibson female college. Died November 24, 1870. Members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Seven children:
1.Benjamin (died October 7, 1878 of yellow fever at age 20 years, 8 months, and 20 days)
2.William P (born November 9, 1845, died November 6, 1863)
3. Catherine B. (born December 29, 1863, died September 16, 1870). Married F.F. Myles
4. Mary Coburn (born August 7, 1860, died September 13, 1863)
5. David George (born Feb. 18, 1847). Lives on Hermitage Place.
6. Samuel C. (born March 4, 1849). Lives on Ashland Farm.
7. Bayless E. (born November 23, 1851). Lives on Oaklawn Plantation.

2. Benjamin Humphreys born February 1827, the fourth of nine children. Married Mary Scott Jeffries on November 6, 1850, “at Scogy the old family homestead of the latter”.

Cecil F. Humphries - Dead end searches Please help.

I am researching the Humphries ancestry for my husband and I keep coming to a dead end. If anyone has any more information that I do not or cannot find would be greatly appreciated!! This is what I know.

On the 1920 Census Cecil Franklin Humphries was living in Anderson, New Madrid, Missouri with his parents Thos & Darrice Humphries. on the 1930 Census he was living with his grandparents Newton & Eliza Lesley. I was about to find out through my husband's father that Cecil's parents did die young and was raised by his grandparents. Other than that information, I am unable to find any other information. I cannot find Thos & Darrice in another records or searches. I am unable to confirm that Newton & Eliza are Darrice's parents (I believe that they are her parents, because the last name is different). Any information on Thos and/or Darrice Humphries and/or Newton and/or Eliza Lesley would be great! We just found out that Cecil F. Humphries dies in 1998, so we were unable to get any information from him.

Any information on Humphries Ancestory

I am doing research for my husband. We was adopted very young and does not know much information about his birth family. There is very little that he does know and would like to know more. This is what he knows.

Birth mother is Diane Lynn Barton (maiden name)
Birth fater is Cecil Dale Humphries (goes by Dale)
Paternal grandfather is Cecil Humphries.
He was born in Martinez, CA in Nov. 1966. He has 4 younger sisters from the same parents. He can only remember 3 of their names, Shawna, Lisa Ann and Denise. The last we heard Lisa Ann was married and living in Arizona. Diane was 19 in 1966 which means she was born around 1947 and Dale was 21, so he was born somewhere around 1945 and the last we heard he was living in Montana with a woman named Terri. His grandfather was living in Rodeo, CA in 1976 and that was the last he heard of him.

Any information that anyone has would be great. This information is for personal use only. With the little information that we know, we cannot find much.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Shade Humphries

I have information on a Shade or Shadrick C. Humphries. He was born March 1836 in either in GA. A S.C. Humphries at the age of 24 enlisted on September 25th, 1861 in Person County, North Carolina as a Corporal. On October 29th, 1861 he mustered into "E" Co. North Carolina 35th Infantry. He became a Comm. Sergeant on August 27th, 1864. He lasted through the war and surrendered on April 9th, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. I am not sure whether this is Shade or not. Shade married a Mary Jane Murphy possibly in Alabama. They had a son William Shade Humphries born August 1873. I got my information on Shade after the Civil War from a Richard A. Rainey in 1997. My husband’s family is descendant from Shade’s Great-Uncle James Humphries.
