Hunter, James, born in Scotland, died at Barton Twp., Wentworth, Co., Upper Canada on 24 Nov 1847. He married Sarah _________.
James filed an Upper Canada Land Petition in 1808 stating that he was a native of Scotland and that he had arrived in North Carolina in 1776 together with his wife and mother. During the American Revolution, he joined the Royal Standard in 1781 and served in the army under Lord Cornwallis until the army was defeated at Yorktown. James remained in North Carolina until 1794. He and his family suffered greatly for their attachment to their country. He came into the province with his wife, mother-in-law and seven children. James noted that his name was inserted on the United Empire Loyalist List and he received 200 acres in King Township.
James may have come in the 1794 party of Loyalists from Orange County, North Carolina led by the Davis family who also settled in Barton Township and in Windham Township, Norfolk Co. where James' son David settled. James himself, settled on Lots 7 and 8, Concession 7, Barton Twp., which he purchased from Abraham Horning.
All of James' children were entitled to file for grants of 200 acres of land as the sons and daughters of a United Empire Loyalist and the following filed:
