Hi there, William Huntington & Margaret Travers are of great interest to me. I tried your website and created a user account, but it hasn't been verified yet. And I couldn't see any info on the site at all, it's totally inaccessible to non-members.

Hazel Shearer
hazeshea@gmail.com

Hi Mike~ Yes, we have all but eliminated all direct connections to the Huntingtons in the US for my line that settled in Quebec.
Can you give me any sites or locations to find birth, death, cemetery, wills, or Bible records for Amy Standish and Simon (b 1710)Huntington's information? I too am trying to find hard evidence for these. Also looking for Simon (b 1740) Huntington and Lydia Huntington Groat's vitals. I have only seen reference to them in family trees, but I need documentation. Mary Forsythe does have a letter that ties some of these together. But I would love to find the documentation to clear it all up.

Another source might be land records where a wife is mentioned. In 19th century records in Ohio, I found a whole branch of relatives through land tax records, when parents gave daughters some land and all the relationships were right there! I don't know if it would work so early as 17th and 18th centuries because land ownership by women was much more constrained.
But I am in Virginia and it's quite a trek up there to CT, Quebec, MI, and Ontario.

Not sure if this went through so I will try again. After checking with family members I was able to find out that our branch is related to the original Simon who died enroute to America. He had a son whose name was also Simon (b 1629) He married Sarah Clarke and they had 10 children. One was Joseph the grandfather of Samuel the signer of the Declaration of Independence. Another was Samuel (b 1665).
He is the one that my family is descended from. My great-great grandfather is Samuel Adams whose father was Silas, the man you referred to who married Elizabeth Stewart.
I noted that Simon #2 also had a daughter whose name was Elizabeth (b 1669) but there was no mention of Lydia. He and Sarah had two daughters by the name of Elizabeth but the first died quite soon after being born.

Thanks for responding. Merry Christmas!
Kathleen in Oregon

Thank you so much for all of the work you have done. Every bit helps me in my search.
I am looking for the descendants of Simon Huntington and Amy Standish. I think that their son, Simon, might be my five greats grandfather and I need to prove that. It is difficult to find the history of the Huntingtons once they came to Canada. I don't know if they were United Empire Loyalists or New England Planters who came to the Maritime Provinces when the Acadians were driven out.
I am pleased to hear that others have noted the wife of Simon Huntington as Amy Standish, rather than Anne.
Elizabeth Huntington was married to William Marsh who was at Caldwell's Manor in Quebec. He may have been UEL. He became a baptist minister and established churches in Quebec. It is believed that Elizabeth is the sister of my 4 greats grandmother, Lydia Huntington who married William Groat.
Lydia's father is reported to be Simon Huntington. We have the forename 'Standish' in the Groat family. Also, it has been written that Lydia's father was the 'seventh man over the hill at the Plains of Abraham' battle.
And, Amy Standish's father was Israel Standish and William Marsh and Elizabeth Standish named their son 'Israel'.
Thank you to everyone who is trying to help me with this. It is a 'brickwall' in my family.
Mary

I have some information on the following from the 1880 census:
Isobella Huntington age 53, She is widowed living in Black Brook Clinton Co, NY
With Son John Huntington born 1858
James Huntington born 1860
Henry Huntington born 1863
Joseph Huntington born 1866
Also the following son, which leads me to believe she shows she was evidently a widow, I believe of Danial Pettigrew,
Andrew Pettigrew born 1848
Sarah His Wife born 1854
Emma Pettigrew born 1876, granddaughter
Danial Pettigrew born 1879, grandson
Anyone have this family in their family tree.. I believe that Amelia Pettigrew was a daughter of Isobella Huntington as is Andrew Pedigrew her son..
Thanks!
Mary

I do have some information on the earlier generations if you need. I am related through Simon's grandfather Christopher Huntington and Ruth Rockwell's son Christopher Huntington (married to Sarah Adgate had son Isaac Huntington)

I would love it if you come across it. I have an extensive database of Huntington data so any little bit might show up in my database and I can make a connestion to another family.

I found some information on Silas Huntington at http://huntington.laurentian.ca/index.php?file=founder_e.htm... He was born 19 Feb 1829 in Kemptville, Quebec, Canada and married Elizabeth Stewart on 21 Jun 1854 in St. Andrews, Quebec, Canada. He died 03 Aug 1905. This Silas had two more wives: Harriet Emmeline Agar and Annie Isabella Anderson. Elizabeth Stewart died in 1891. The site said that there were five sons, but only three are named: Samuel A. Huntington; J.W. Huntington; Hugh Stewart Huntington (born in Canada; died 1890 in Berlin, Ontario, Canada; married Annie Laura Mills.)
You will find more information on this family, at least the ancestors, on the Huntington Family Association site.
My Huntingtons were also in Quebec--Elizabeth Huntington married Rev. William Marsh, who was a United Empire Loyalist. Elizabeth's sister, Lydia Huntington married William Groat. We know precious little about Elizabeth and Lydia Huntington, except that their father was likely a Simon Huntington. It is also rumored that we are related to Samuel Huntington who signed the Declaration of Independence, but I haven't found any connections for 'our Simon Huntington'. There was a Simon Huntington in Quebec who may have been a United Empire Loyalist. However, I haven't found his parents yet.
Mary in BC, Canada

David Low HUNTINGTON & Martha Annie ALLEN

I'm researching the descendants of the Rev. Bishop James RICHARDSON, D.D., first Methodist Episcopal Bishop of Canada. He is buried at the Toronto Necropolis and I've just bought a book of monumental inscriptions. On three sides of the RICHARDSON grave are names and dates which are familiar to me, but on the fourth was a surprise:

Martha Annie
ALLEN
Wife of
David L.
HUNTINGTON
And
Grand daughter of
James
RICHARDSON D.D.
Died Nov. 8th 1861
Aged 24 years.

Some quick searches of the usual suspects (IGI, Ancestry, Rootsweb) revealed that a number of researchers show that one David Low HUNTINGTON married Annie Martha ALLEN in Pennsylvania on 9 May 1860. The death date of Annie Martha matches the death date of Martha Annie from the grave in Toronto. These trees show that David remarried in September of 1861 (unlikely, as his first wife was still alive) or, more likely, 28 September 1869 in New Mexico to Elizabeth Gertrude SHOEMAKER.

The book, "The Huntington family in America : a genealogical memoir of the known descendants of Simon Huntington from 1633 to 1915" mentions only Gertrude as his wife, with a marriage date of 28 September 1869 in Santa Fe, NM.

What I'm trying to discover is whether this is the same David HUNTINGTON who married Martha Annie (or Annie Martha) ALLEN or whether two men with a similar name have been accidentally combined in a family tree and the mistake repeated elsewhere. Do any HUNTINGTON researchers have the details of his marriage to Gertrude SHOEMAKER -- was he a widower? Has anyone seen the Pennsylvania marriage record to Martha Annie ALLEN? I'm afraid I don't know the names of her parents; as her grandfather was James RICHARDSON, presumably her mother was a RICHARDSON and her father an ALLEN, but this would be a previously-unknown daughter in the RICHARDSON family tree. The other possibility is that Martha was a widow at the time of her 1860 marriage and ALLEN was her first husband's name.

It's early days yet for me so I haven't any more detailed information on David, but am quite happy to share anything about the RICHARDSON family if we can discover whether this Martha Annie ALLEN on the grave married the same David Low HUNTINGTON who married and had a family with Gertrude SHOEMAKER.

Thanks!
Holly

Hello,
Can anyone tell me the names of the sons of Silas Huntington, the famous minister who has a college in Canada named after him, and his wife Elizabeth Stewart? My grandfather told me about a preacher who kept on preaching on a runaway trolley in the family. Not sure if this was his father or his uncle. He also said we were related to Samuel Huntington who signed the Declaration of Independence in the US. Did any of the descendants of Simon Huntington who died on the way over from England move to Canada? My grandfather was born in North Bay. He married E.Clay born on Vancouver Island, in Ladysmith. They had 5 sons, one of whom is my father. All were born in Tacoma, WA.

Thanks in advance.
K.L.Huntington

Looking for information on the parents and any siblings for William Huntington. William was born 8/8/1844 in Philadelphia, PA, son of William Huntington and Elizabeth (unknown last name). His father was probably born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Connecticut. According to the census, they were not married before the 1840 Census and appear not to be listed on the 1850 Census. William was listed in Hartfort, CT in 1850 working as a blacksmith for Henry Weller. William joined as a private in Company "L", 1st Regiment of the Connecticut Heavy Artillery and fought in the Civil War. William mustered out in 1865. He went to Jefferson, NH, where he met and married Sarah Hight. They traveled across country and settled in Ukiah, CA.
