I am researching William Kendall Hurd, son of William Hurd and Mary Kendall. I do have most of William K. Hurds info and children too. I am stuck on his son James E. Hurd. Williams bio says he was in Missouri but cannot find a trace of him anywhere. Would you happen to know anything about this line forward or backwards. I would like to find the ancestry of William Hurd and who his forfathers were. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hurd Family Bible -

I have recently found an old bible that once belonged to Leet Hurd and his wife, Wealthy Redfield. This is a marvelous find for the Hurd and Redfield family historians as it lists Leet and Wealthy’s family as well as Leet’s parents Caleb and Mary Griswold. This 1809 bible is in poor shape, but the three pages of family information are clear and written in fine penmanship.

As a hobby I attempt to find such old items and connect them with descendants or extended family members. Please contact me at Suemanz.graham@comcast.net if you are interested in this bible.

Regards,

Sue
Polly,

I'm researching the Moore line. I believe Lockey's parents were Samuel Moore and his 2nd/3rd wife, Jane Rogers Moore. I believe that my maternal gr-gr-grandfather, PHANIRY Moore is Lockey's 1/2 brother.

Note that David Hurd/Herd and Lockey have a son listed as PHINIRA, so I strongly think there is a family tie there.

Also, in the 1850 Scott County VA census, my Phaniry "Venira" Moore has a son named "Winrite".

Your thoughts please, anyone!

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned this. Simeon actually had two daughters named Rebecca. The first may have died. (There's a Rebecca Hurd death in 1769 in Woodbury -- probably her.) The one I am concerned with was born in 1775 (per the Dena Hurd Genealogy). And that's the time period that seems to have no birth records (for Roxbury anyway). I think the Hurd genealogy only says she was born in 1775, but there are several LDS postings that give a specific date: Sept. 16, 1775. What I want to find out is where did that date come from? It's apparently not from town records.

Thanks for your efforts, by the way, and for your interest.

Yes. I have checked Barbour for both Woodbury and Roxbury. Unfortunately, the birth records for the part of Woodbury that became Roxbury are missing. There are Hurd death records for the 1770s(recorded in Roxbury) but no birth records for most of the Hurds in either town.

Anyone have information on Simeon Hurd, son of Benjamin, b. 1725 in Woodbury CT, d. 1806 Sandgate, VT? I am particularly interested in his daughter, Rebecca, said to be born Sept. 16, 1775 in Roxbury, CT. I cannot find a source for her birthdate. The History of Woodbury (which included Roxbury) says that early birth records for Roxbury are missing, yet somebody came up with that date. Is it in the Dena Hurd genealogy?

Agnes was the daughter of John Nathan Jordan and Lavinia Davis Jordan. ( Her younger sister, Georgia Jordan Decker was my grandmother.) I have been unable to locate information on Hazel (Hurd) and Robert Nolting and also on your family Carolyn - the Kautzers. All I have is record of your birth and that of your siblings. Would be happy to share whatever information I have on Smiths, Jordans....

My information on Simon Hurd is from "A History of a Thomas Family." He was a Chaplin in the Rev. War and in civilan life was a Preacher. He and his wife Ruth Hickok m. 1750, and had 12 children. The first Rebecca was b.31 Dec. 1752 d.26 Dec. 1769, The listing for their last child is as follows, "Rebecca (again), b. 16 Sep. 1755 bp., Roxbury, Connecticut." After Ruth's death in 1777 Simeon married again. I don't have a name for that wife. My line goes back to Rebecca's sister Dorcas who married Jacob Thomas, Sr. There are a number of sources listed in my Thomas book for the information on the Hurd family but none are for Rebecca alone.
I should have sent you the sources listed in my History of a Thomas Family. The compiler of the book passed away a number of years ago and I am not familiar with the sources. I hope that they are helpful. They are as follows: "Family bible of Mrs. Daisy Hurd Decker, great-great grandaughter of Simeon and Ruth; Hurd Thaddeus B.; Sandgate Land Records; Renner; Barbour; Sandgate pp 15, 16; Cothren 2: 572, 574-5, 622; Hurd, Dena D., pp 34, 43, 241; DAR-PI p 357; DAR 20: 163; Connecticut, pp 81, 235; C.S.A.Mil. Record of Rev. Simeon Hurd; Hickok, p 35; Agustus; DAR-App, 425942, and 19439."

Yes, I've seen those LDS patron reports too. They claim twelve children to these parents, including two Rebecca's, with a death date for the first following birth of the second (1832, Hillsobo, New Hampshire)?

Barbour's Collection also includes a Rebecca Hurd b.25 June 1777 in Stratford to Andrew and Mary.

The longer I research Hurd's, the more I run into the names Hard and Herd being interchanged by researchers without explanation.

Yes, your Cooley Hurd was the son of Cooley Hurd, Sr. who died in Aurelias, Cayuga County, NY. Cooley Hurd, Jr. wrote a deposition in his father's widow's pension application--based on Cooley's Rev. War service--which proves that Cooley Hurd, Sr. was his father and gives some good genealogical info. about the family.

(Cooley Hurd (Sr.) married twice. Cooley, Jr. was a son of the first marriage. There are some postings about Cooley's first marriage at www.genforum.com. Cooley's (Sr.)'s second wife was Sarah Prout, whom he married on 11 Feb 1813 in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont. Cooley Hurd, Sr. died in Aurelias, Cayuga County, NY on 23 Apr 1837. His widow was living in Springport, Cayuga, NY at the time she applied for a widow's pension based on Cooley's Revolutionary War service.

All of this info. and much more is detailed in Cooley Hurd (Sr.)'s fascinating Rev. War pension application and his widow's pension application. (Not all Rev. War veterans fought in actual battles, but Cooley did. He was severely injured and made a P.O.W. at the infamous Sugar House in New York.) Note: much of his pension and his widow's pension is available through HeritageQuest, which is available online, free at many public libraries; however not all of the pension app. was copied by HeritageQuest. Several additional pages which yield some genealogical information are available online at www.footnote.com (fee-based service).

Hurds of Sandgate VT, Erie NY, Medina OH

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

We start with Thaddeus Hurd (b. 1775 d. 1845) and his wife Sarah Hurd (b. 1776 d. 1865), in Sandgate, Bennington, VT. According to their son Clark's biography in Erie NY, they have five children:

Russell
Hiram b. 1805 VT d. 1865 Hinckley, Medina OH
Clark W. b. 1806 VT or CT
Sally
Harriet

At least Thaddeus, Hiram, and Clark moved to Erie NY before 1830. Hiram (and maybe the others) also lived in Amsterdam, Montgomery NY for a few years because one of his sons, George Wilson Hurd, was born there. Anyway, Hiram married Louisa Sherburn ca. 1823 (her obit says in VT, but that seems unlikely), and had six children:

Ira L. b. 1825 NY d. 1862
George Wilson b. 1827 NY d. 1898 Hinckley m. Abigail C Brown
Lucy M. Hurd b. 1830 NY b. after 1880 MI m. Dexter Carpenter
Harriet Hurd b. 1834 OH
John L. Hurd b. 1843 OH d. 1864
unknown daughter

Hiram & Louisa, Ira, George & Abigail, and John, are all bured in Bennetts Corners Cemetery in Brunswick, Medina, OH.

Info on any of these people would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
