I have a connection to the Hurlburts in Michigan that I'm still trying to put together----my ancestors were in Michigan for a short time and then on to Wisconsin (Ansel Hurlburt Odell)

But I'm wondering if you also have a connection to the Dailey family? I'm asking because I have another ancestor whose name was Theron Dailey/Daley. Those people were in Pennsylvania in the 19th C. for a while.

Maybe just a coincidence....but one never knows.

wives of William Hulbird (Hurlburt) of Windsor CT

I am looking for source information for the notion that William Hulbird of Windsor Connecticut, son of William Hurlburt who was a founding settler in Windsor, married three times, and his third wife was Hannah (Whitaker) Hulet, the widow of John Hulet of Concord.

I've seen references to two articles in the Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John, but I haven't found any citation of the source of the notion, which almost certainly was not the Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John, nor for any proof of this notion.

The second article I saw cite this idea claims that tehre is no proof of any of his marriages (except I suppose the christening records of his children).

Does anyone have more information?

One other thing. Anne, the widow of Samuel Allen of Windsor, an early or founding settler, married William Hurlburt of Windsor, a founding settler. William Hurlburt than moved to Northampton, taking Anne and her children by Samuel with her. Her son settled in Deerfield which had serious Indian troubles and was killed in a battle with the Indians, and two of his sons, Samuel and Joseph, went to Enfield, settling near the Windsor town line. Apparently William Hurlburt's son William by Samuel's and Joseph's great grandmother headed in that direction too - if this isn't confusing enough already. It wasn't like Allen's customarily married and had children at age 15. Joseph married Mary Hulet, who may have been Mary Hulet born in 1703 in Concord, Massachusetts, to John Hulet and Mary Whittaker, who married there. They also had a son named John who, allegedly of Rehoboth at the other end of Massachusetts at the time, showed up, bought land next to that of the Allen family, then after two years returned to Rehoboth. I've found no further record of John and Hannah, the parents, and no idea what their daughter would ahve been doing in the middle of Connecticut in the back woods. I have found several references, one of them in Great Migration Begins, to the notion that William Hurlburt Jr married, apparently in Windsor (or Enfield), as his third wife, after the alleged death of wife #2 in March of 1709 or 1710, "Hannah Whitaker the widow of John Hulit of Concord". Mind, I could use any documentation on the death of that second wife, since according to the Great Migration database, there is no evidence of any of William's marriages. (She apparently died in New Haven.) Marriage of Joseph Allen and Mary Hulit did not take place until around 1723. The marriage occurred in whatever genealogical black hole William Hulbird married in and the Hulit's lived in if they were there, because as far as I've been able to learn, no record exists, nor of Joseph and Mary's first child.

The second article I saw cite this idea claims that tehre is no proof of any of his marriages (except I suppose the christening records of his children). If the whole thing is true, then Joseph married his great uncle's stepdaughter. Never mind if it was coincidence; is it likely to have happened?

Yours,
Dora Smith
tiggernut24@yahoo.com

Hi MaryKay, Although this is an older thread, I am hoping it is still an active one. I am looking for any/all information for Hurlburt's in Nova Scotia, Canada in the early to mid 1800's. Also, do you have a copy or perhaps portions of your Hurlburt family book posted anywhere for viewing? Thank you.

Leonard Hurlburt
quixcar427@hotmail.com

Theron,

My name is Leonard Hurlburt. I am a direct descendant of John L. Hurlburt. John L. (Lavin) Hurlburt 7/26/1858 - 1/11/1936, was my great grandfather. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Powley of course, was my great grandmother. I've been doing some recent research of my own and have a moderate amount of information on this branch of the Hurlburt's and the Powleys starting with that generation. I am currently researching who John's parents were and where they may have come from. John by the way was one of thirteen kids. I would be happy to share any infornation I have with you. If any of this sounds interesting to you, please contact me.
I am hoping that you can help with my search. My great-grandmother was Emily Hurlburt, born abt. 1861 in Mo. She married Lilly Bridge Kennedy about 1882. He was from Ohio, but am not sure where. I'm stuck on him as well. They lived in Mo., I am assuming, their entire married life, but can find nothing on them. I have found that Emily's father was Josiah Hurlburt, Born 11.25.1822 in Ohio and married Mahala Hunsaker in 1846. My grandmother Edith Sarilda Kennedy was born in Novelty, Mo., so am assuming that is where they lived most of their married life, but am not sure. Can you help with my search? Thank you for any help you can give.

Oklahoma

By the mid 1830s, they were in Grand Rapids, MI, where they remained the rest of their lives. I know who Catherine's father was (a Frenchman, surname presumably POUILLY), and I know about a brother's family.
Hurlbut Connection to Hulbert thru DNA

While DNA testing of descendants have shown immigrants Thomas and William were not closely related, new results have connected Thomas with a descendant of Samuel Hulbert b. 1712 Bowden England.
The results are at
http://hurlbutdna.pbwiki.com/
This information strongly supports the connection between the two surnames in at least part of the family. There is an additional Hulbert tracing his line to William Hulbert b. 1836 NY who also has a close DNA connection.

We encourage other males whose lines have not been identified to consider DNA testing. Reviewing the surnames already tested at FTDNA, we find a Hurlbut and a Hurlburt not accounted for. We hope they will get in touch with the DNA Project.

I actually hadn't found that record...Thank you! It was them...Robert's middle name was Gordon...I had had his mother down as Susan E., however...Maybe the E stands for the Elizabeth? And Downie must have been her maiden name.
Mattie L. is Samantha. The census had one of her children down incorrectly, though. James Gordon is correct, but there was no son named Mildred. I have no idea how that was put down. The birthdate, May 1900, was correct, though. Mildred was really Victoria Elizabeth Hayward.(My Great-grandmother)Samantha and Robert also had another child in 1903 named Charles Robert Hayward.
Samantha must have used a lot of nicknames! If you come across any information on Samantha in any old family records or anything, I would love to hear about it! I've come to a roadblock where her parents are concerned. I do have pictures of Samantha and her children if you are adding those to your tree. Let me know if you'd like copies of them.

I just read your post. I too am related to Truman Bates. My grandfather was Truman Bates b. 25 Mar 1875, he would be Cora Bates Clum's sister. There were several other siblings, being Anna or Emma Bates Moyer, Lewis, Elisha, John, Frances Bates Bonnett, Harriet, Samuel, and Newell. It is my understanding that my grandmother, Catherine Frances Sullivan Bates married Truman approx 1913. Catherine was Truman's 3rd wife. being approx 22-23 yrs diffrence between them. Truman's other wives were deceased. Or so I have been told. My mom was born in Cornwall, CT. Sorry, I don't know much about Polly Hurlburt, but would like to talk to you about the Bates/Clum relationship. Thank you.

I was looking for a gravestone and decided to take pictures of all that was there, being that there were only a handful. Email me, and I will send directions to the Cemetery, if it would be helpful.

Wife of
B. F.
