During a recent trip to Vermont, I obtained the following additional information about Ruth Hurlbut:

1. The marriage records in Pittsford state that Ruth was born in Bromley, Vermont (now Peru, VT) in 1778

2. The town records in Peru list two male Hurlbuts living in Bromley/Peru in the late 18th and early 19th centuries: Ebenezer Hurlbut and Simeon Hurlbut. The first recorded town meeting of Bromley was held in 1802 in the home of Ebenezer Hurlbut, at which Ebeneber was elected a Selectman and Simeon was elected Surveyor of Highways.

3. Marriage records show that Peninah Hurlbut - probably a sister of Ruth - was born 04 Jan 1772 (no birthplace stated) and married James Drury on 22 Sep 1790 in Bromley. The parents of neither are listed.

It appears on the surface that Ebenezer might have been the elder of the two male Hurlbuts, since the town meeting was held in his home and we was elected to a higher office. Thus it would be probable that Simeon was a son to Ebenezer and brother to Ruth (and Peninah). If he were born around 1775, he would have been about 27 at the time of the 1802 town meeting and certainly old enough to hold the office of Surveyor of Roads
