Re: Glenn Dee Hurlbutt

I called someone in Iowa about 4 or 5 years ago who had corresponded years ago with my late mother, and she helped me put together part of this line. A complete descendant list is too long to post. Whomever I called is buried deep now in some box. I don't have Glenn Dee, just Glenn.

Anyway, what I put together is essentially Gideon Hurlbut m. Margaret ___; Gideon Hurlbutt m. Hannah Taylor; James Hurlbutt m. Ann Nancy Hayes; Henry Hurlbutt m. Almira Jennings; Gould Jennings Hurlbutt m. Julia W. Bacon; Grant C. Hurlbutt m. Vena Pagler; George Hurlbutt m. Neva Klar; then Glenn (may be living, shouldn't post) m. Living, Marshalltown, Iowa.

I've done much research on your earlier lineage which converges with mine at Gideon Hurlbut Sr., and found some really fascinating things; we have a gateway royal ancestor, Mary Allyn, and a Newberry lineage going back to the 900's, fascinating history, and a marvelous story(ies) about John Taylor and his son and grandson.

You may not be around these days to see my response because your post is so old, and I'm assuming you've made some headway since then. I shared my finds with a major Hurlbut researcher who has the most comprehensive Hurlbut database on the web. They should be in there, but not some of the ancient history I've tracked down these past few months.

PS. I got all the pages from Vol II of the "Hurlburt" genealogy so you don't need to send those.

Also saw reference that he came with his wife from England.

I still saw no mention of her surname so how did you get that?

One interesting factoid was that the name is perhaps an abbreviation of "Halliburton". Hello. I never thought of that. Maybe the English researchers who have tried to help could look into that. There have been so many spelling variations.

I can get any page from the Ancient History of Wethersfield, so please don't bother with that, but anything else you may have would be of great interest.

And thanks!

Wow, again, google brought me in here, didn't know the board existed and didn't know I was signed up for it, same moniker as one of mine on rootsweb. I seldom search the message boards any more, posted a lot back in about 01 on another one, now people just aren't interested or there are too many so often you get no responses any more, wasn't that way quite as much when I started shortly after 1997.

Am = America, often abbreviate. I would love to see your info, you can email me at aglessREMOVETHIS@earthlink.net. I keep everything that is in my direct line but often share with distant cousin John Hurlburt who maintains that massive hurlbut.info website. Do you not know about that?

I started with Edith Hurlbutt's (married a gr gr uncle? of mine) and she compiled "The Descendants of Nathaniel Hurlbutt", (DNR for short) watched her taking notes as a kid. Anyway, I got all that entered, well I haven't finished the later generations, then started picking off more info from John's site and comparing, then started helping him here and there find some lost ones, filling in gaps, interesting other material I find. So I would need your permission to share with him. I need it for myself, too, as I only keep my own line and as many descendants from Nathaniel as I can manage in my genealogy program and database.

Seems like all four volumes of that book (Ancient Wethersfield) are at ancestry but it is too slow today. I found a couple interesting tidbits, searched on nye and it only picked up one, no Sarah. There was an Ebenezer Nye in Tolland but that was too late, the 1700's.

I noticed there was quite a lag between the birth of Thomas' son Thomas and the rest of the children attributed to him. Now there is some controversy that there were three Thomas that should perhaps be only two. Won't go there now. I wondered if Thomas brought his wife with him from England or married in CT. First son Thomas b. 1630, that's the year he supposedly came here, says born in Wethersfield. Now I don't know how that could be since he was at Saybrook.

I've somewhat defended my ancestor as well concerning the Pequots. Thomas was awarded land for service in the war, his grandson John finally claimed and was given it, presumably after he died, but I can't find a roster of the soldiers for that war, there are some. I was thrilled to find so much about him in Lion Gardiner's journal and subsequent letters.

Better run. Oh, I think the only way I can read your info would be in .pdf format. Or regular text or .rtf. Hope you can wade through all this and make some sense of it.

Almost forgot. None of mine got into NY. A lot did go there. My first Nathaniel went to Hanover, NH in about 1783. From there in about 1840, Hurlbutt, Wilder, and Osgood went to Knox County, IL. We have used the 2 t's for generations now, but some revert back to one t or a census taker or record keeper makes a total mess of the name. That's why it is difficult to research whereas you would think it would be easier because it's not that common of a name.

Thanks so much for your response, never expected it, look forward to hearing from you.

Alice

Wow, your inquiry was a surprise. My wife says she made that 2004 response and I never knew.
Apparently we started from the same Thomas. Sounds like he had a first born named Thomas. I only know of his son Samuel, born 1644, married Mary Good in 1668, and died in 1712, apparently all in Wethersfield. I can tell you that when Mason sailed down the Ct River recruiting for the Pequot massacre Thomas supposedly declined, feeling he was too old for the trip. (Ironically I have worked for the Pequots for the last 17 yrs and I let them know that they shot my grandfather Thomas "through the thigh" in one, if not the first encounter, in a cornfield at Saybrook, according to Lion Gardiner's diary. I can tell you that Thomas married Sarah Ney. The History of Ancient Wethersfield Volume 1, Sherman W. Adams and Henry Stiles will tell you a lot about Thomas. I can fax or Adobe the relevant pages if you like.
Samuel had Stephen (first, not surname) born 12/27/1668 in Wethersfield, came to NL around 1690, married Hannah Douglas and the rest is my family history.
Our myth is that Squire Hurlbut 1807-1886 added the second ‘t’ because he “thought it finished it off”. Apparently he wasn’t unique in that logic.
I have a wealth of info on my side but nothing on the second Thomas. Where is “Am”?
Some of my early descendants moved to Wyoming, PA and Genoa, NY, perhaps following yours?
I never knew his surname was Stephen. Where did you come up with that? He is the progenitor of a huge Hurlbut/Hurlburt/Hurlbutt line in Am. They are hard to track because they keep changing the spelling from one generation to another, it's been Hurlbutt which is my maiden name for about 6 generations now but some of the descendants changed it again. And census takers, etc., often got it wrong.

Mine (original Thomas) came with Lion Gardiner and fought in the Pequot wars, Ft. Saybrook then settled in Wethersfield, then to NH, IL and spread out. I'm trying to find little bits of info that may have been missed by previous researchers, may have succeeded a little, nothing earthshaking.

Anyway, my line is Thomas>Thomas>Thomas>Gideon>Nathaniel>Nathaniel>Alba>Frederick Augustus>Frederick Nathaniel, then my father and me.

I thought I found his wife's maiden name but think it may have been wishful thinking on somebody's part, maybe not.

The bat for hurling was called a 'clubbe' or 'hurle-batte' This view makes the case for Spring-bat meaning 'cudgel'. Whether this is a correct guess I do not know. In 1897 she married Elmer (who may also have gone by Robert) Shoemaker in Lycoming County, PA, where she died on 12 Apr 1948. She may have lived for a time in Canandaigua, NY. She had a brother named Charles and at least one sister. My main interest is in Elmer Shoemaker, so I'm hoping someone who knows of Alice may know when and where he died.

Hi Gail - This branch of the Hurlbutt family (the same branch as that of Kathie White nee Hurlbutt that you corresponded with- we're cousins and recently got in touch for first time since childhood) uses the spelling with 2 tts. However, I've now discovered some records of the 1800s when the name was spelled incorrectly: William Hurlbutt (b. 1826 somewhere in Connecticut- does anyone know where?) shows up as Harlbutt in the 1881 British census - I think you put me on to that one. It's definitely him and his family, perhaps the census officer misheard the name because of William's Amercian accent. Also in his marriage record in Leith, Scotland, (to Robina Sclater of Kirkwall, Orkney) he is show as Hulbut. I understand this type of error was common at that time.
No, I don't have any documents which link the name to the mediaeval origins that I referred to. The information is purely word-of-mouth down the generations. My father and grandmother are now dead so I cannot ask for any more details. But if I get any more info in my searches I'll post you a message again.
Best wishes, Meg, London, UK

Hi again Gail - ( I thought I'd posted a reply to this but can't see it so here goes again)
My father, son of Annie Hurlbutt from South Shileds, UK, told me the origin of the name was as follows:
In mediaeval times, when broadswordsmen were taught to fight, one of the people involved in the training was a Hurlbutt, a person who would throw pieces of wooden logs towards the trainee, who had to practice chopping at the 'butts' of wood with his sword.

Stephen Thomas Hurlbutt was the earliest of my ancestors who came over from Engalnd with Lion Gardiner and settled in Saybrook. The family made it's way to what is presently known as Gales Ferry, but this was known earlier as Hurlbutt's Ferry. There is a lot of information in this area on the Hurbutt's. There's a cemetery in town on Hurlbutt Rd (right off Rte 12) with lots of Hurlbutts. The local Methodist Church on Chapman Lane was founded by Sqire Hurlbutt.

My grandmother Annie was a Hurlbutt and her grandfather (?William or Andrew) was said to have run away from his home in Connecticut at the age of 15, and settled in North Shields, England about 1850. He was accompanied by an artist friend called Hinman: this name has been used as a middle name in subsequent generations. William/Andrew was said to be a descendant of Thomas Hurlbutt, b 1610, who went to Taybrook, Connecticut in 1635, with wife, a female servant and 10 men, to build a fort to protect the English from native Americans. The line in between Thomas and William/Andrew is what I am looking for. Any relevant info?

Federal land Patents show Willard as getting land in Humboldt Co in 1877 & 1878. Fank was born there and married Helen POOLE (my line).
Also listed in the land patents are the following HURLBUTT's
Walter A., Beldon G., Elmer W., Fred A. Frank L., Harry E. Lewis S. & Nathaniel. I have not tied thm all in yet but I know some are sons of Willard. I spoke with a Fred HURLBUTT living in Humboldt Co. last week and he said his great-grandparents were Willard and ______Lovejoy HURLBUTT.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Meg,
The meaning you give makes perfect sense. Now I'm wondering if your family spelled the name with one "T" or two?
Also, from what you write, the Hurlbut name is an old one that has roots in Medieval times.
Hi Meg,
Thanks for the information! The William Hurlbutt you speak of may, indeed, be the father of the William Hurlbutt I am searching for. My William was born in 1846 or 1847. I have a document which gives his place of residency in 1902 as living in Troy, NY, however, as in your family, the story has been passed down, and that he was from Memphis, Tennessee. The document further states his occupation as that of salesman.

Beyond this, my information is sketchy. That your family spells the name with two t's seems to distinguish separate families though. Wouldn't you say? Those who used only one t and those who used two t's. I wonder why this is?

Thanks, again, for your help!

Gail Herter

Which branch of the Hurlbutt's did he come from? Ran away from home in Connecticut, at the age of 15, to settle in the port of North Shields, England, about 1850. Became a master mariner. Had a son called Andrew Hinman Hurlbutt. William may have returned to the US.

Hurlbutt/Hurlbut Name Origins

Would anyone have information as to the origins of the name Hurlbutt/Hurlbut? I've done a bit of research and see that it's origins are English and the original name was Hurlbatt. Recently, however, I have seen that Hurlbutt is also Irish. Has anyone else run across this?

Gail Herter

I am searching in CT for the Hurlbutt/Hurlburt line. The earliest ancestor I can document is Elisha Hurlburt who married Phebe Carter May 1750 in Windham. Their son, Alfred, was born there in Dec 1756. He is my gggf. Any info on the line would be most appreciated. Thanks.
