The following information appears in the Historical and Biographical Record of
Tulare Co., page 1581
DANIEL P. SHIPPEY - with the exception of five years Daniel P. Shippey has been a resident of Visalia,
Tulare Co., since 1872, and by the many sterling traits which distinguish his character, he has won the confidence and esteem of all with whom he has come in business or social contact. As a farmer and carpenter he has spent the greater part of his life here, but in 1902 he became interested in the milling business, purchasing the Hubbs Planing Mill, now known as A. B. Shippey & Co., his two sons, A. R. and A. B. Shippey being equal partners in the concern and the practical managers.
A native of Pomeroy,
Ohio, where he was born December 27, 1836 (should have been 1835), Daniel P. Shippey was taken to
Illinois when three years old, his father then locating in McDonough county near Macomb. In 1842 he went to
Missouri, where he was reared to young manhood by J. H. Dice, a farmer of Cedar county. He received his education in the common school in the vicinity of his home, after which he was apprenticed to learn the trade of carpenter, being located in St. Clair county, Mo. At the breaking out of the Civil war he left his personal pursuits and in April, 1861, enlisted from that county in the first company of Loyal Home Guards. In December of that year he joined the first battalion of Yates Sharpshooters, comprising five hundred and forty men, and equipped for service by the war governor of
Illinois, being a part of Company A, Sixty-fourth
Illinois Regiment. His enlistment was for three years, and he served until January 15, 1864. He afterward re-enlisted for three years more, out of which time he was allowed thirty days as furlough, and went to Ottawa, Ill. There his regiment was re-organized with recruits from other companies and called the Sixty-fourth
Illinois, comprising nine hundred and sixty men, rank and file. At the close of the war, when mustered out in Chicago, it numbered only one hundred and fifty, Mr. Shippey being one of nine of the original company in which he enlisted. During the time that he served he was in seventeen important battles, including those about Atlanta, the March to the Sea, through the Carolinas, the capture of General Johnston, and the march to Richmond. He was in the Grand Review in Washington, and received his honorable discharge in Louisville, July 15, 1865. Mr. Shippey entered the army as a private and in the course of time received the promotion to the position of corporal, then sergeant, up to the first duty sergeant, and won much commendation for personal bravery.
After being mustered out of service in Chicago, Ill., Mr. Shippey returned to his home in
Missouri and engaged in farming and the prosecution of his trade until the fall of 1872. In that year he came to CA and located in Visalia, where he followed the same occupation until 1881. Removing then to Umatilla county, Ore., he engaged in a general merchandise business in Willow Station until July 4, 1886, when he returned to Visalia and once more followed his trade and general farming operations. Since 1900 he has withdrawn entirely from the latter occupation. In 1902 he purchased the Hubbs Planing Mill, which, with his two sons, he now conducts, and also owns other city property, among which is his residence and five lots on South Court street.
The marriage of Mr. Shippey united him with Amanda Melvina Hurt, a native of
Missouri and they are the parents of four sons and four daughters. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a member and the quartermaster of Gen. George Wright Pos, No. III, G.A.R., of Visalia. Politically he is a stanch Republican.

The following was written to

Poe Shippey:
A biographical line of ancestry of your father from the early formation of the thirteen (13) original colonies. Three brothers came over from England in the early days of the colonies before the Revolutionary War. One settled in Rhode Island, one in MA and the third somewhere not known. The one who settled in Rhode Island whose lineal descendants is recorded here. Your great grandfather, Thomas
Shippey, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and fought for the independence of America and so on down the line, many of the descendants have offered their lives for the preservation of Old Glory and national freedom. Your great grandparent Thomas
Shippey, Born Dec. 27, 1747, signed the first Declaration of Independence of Rhode Island in 1775. The first colony to declare its independence.

Albert R. Shippey served the the
Spanish American War.
Chester A. Shippey, nephew of Albert R. Shippey tells the story, that one day, Albert (Uncle Bus) just got up, took half of the money he and Ovitte had in savings and went to Alaska, where he went to work hunting for the government. One day he just quit and returned to Visalia where he commenced to build the duplex unit at 321 North Giddings, Visalia,
Tulare Co., California. He died in one of the units and his brother, Alvin
Shippey found him dead in bed.
Albert had a big hole under his right arm as a result of a frozen lung operation. It never closed.
When he went to Alaska, it appears that he went up White Horse pass and then went down into the Yukon as one of the pictures he took was from the top of White Horse pass. I took the same picture in 2004 from the train at the top of the pass. (Marian
Shippey Cote). He must have also spent some time in Arizona as there were some pictures that Chester
Shippey once had of some indians dancing with snakes in their mouths. I have never been able to locate these pictures, but was fascinated by them as a child.

Grandfather Alvin and Grandmother Ethel
Shippey lived together until their children were grown. Grandmother once told me that she told Alvin, you will stay here until Mervyn gets out of school and then you can go where you want. He lived in Sonora, CAfor a number of year's as he was an outdoors man and loved to hunt.
In later years he was sick and was sent to the Veteran's Hospital in Boise, Idaho where he died there. He is buried in the Visalia Public Cemetery District. Grandmother is also buried there, but she is buried next to her mother, Minnie Clair
Abbott HAMILTON. One day when we were discussing various things, before she died, she said "don't bury me next to Alvin, I want to be buried next to my mother.
Grandmother
Shippey was a very prim and proper lady and I can thank her for a lot of good manners, which I thought at the time she was teaching me, was a bunch of hoey. But to this day, I thank her for all the good things she taught me. (Thoughts by Marian

Alvin B. Shippey
In and around Visalia stand many monuments to the enterprise ofd good taste of Alvin B. Shippey, Architect, Contractor and builder. Mr. Shippey ia a native of the capital city of Tulare county and was born March 28 1874, a son of Daniel P. and Martha W. M. (Hurt)
Shippey, both of
Missouri birth, who came to Visalia in 1872. A carpenter by trade, Daniel P. Shippey operated a planing mill and worked at his trade in Visalia and has long been well known in connection with contracting and building interest in this city. Here some of his children were born and all of them grew up and were educated. The eldest is Mrs. Eva
SANDERS. The others are Mrs. Lela White, Walter of Porterville,
Wilbur of Utah, Albert of Los Angeles, and Alvin B. of Visalia. After his graduation from the public school of Visalia, Alvin B. Shippey learned the carpenter's trade under his father's instruction: in fact, he began to learn it long before he left school, for he has driven nails since he was thirteen years old. He began his business career as a partner with his father and brother in the
Shippey planning mill at Visalia and in 1902 branched out for himself as a contractor and builder, making a specialty of doing architectural work and drawing plans for his buildings. The following products of his artistic handicraft should be mention here as a part of the record of his busy life to date: The James Crowley home, a house for John Frans, the Co-operative Creamery building, the home of L. Scott, J. B. Simpson, John Daly, O. P. Swanson and L. Lucier, the North Methodist church, the new cannery building, the Palace in Lindsay, the ranch house and barns of E. O. Miller, the Fred
HAMILTON residence, the Prairie Center school house and the redince of Louis Felder. In 1902 Mr. Shippey married Miss Ethel
HAMILTON, a native daughter of
California, whose father J. Hamilton was an early settler in the state, and hey have two children, Chester and Mervyn.
