Thank you for responding. I do have the information that you mentioned about the family. Louisa B. Vance died on June 7, 1920 while living with her daughter's family in Oakland, Calif. She was not a widow as her former husband didn't die until 1937. I have Louisa and William's marriage certificate that states he was divorced and had no children from his previous marriage. I also have the California voter registration records for William H. Vance. In 1900 he was living at 3111 Fillmore in San Francisco while Louise and Thelma was living at 12 Ford St. in San Francisco. William was on the voter registration lists of 1910, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1934 and 1936 in Hornitas Precint, Merced Falls, Mariposa County, California. I also noticed on the 1930 Census he was listed as a veteran of the Spanish American War, but I couldn't find him on any of the lists of soldiers.

Sorry I've taken so long to get back to you. My Hutchens/Hutchins line traces from Maryland to Virginia, to Tennessee, to North Carolina. In the time frame you're inquiring, they were in Tennessee. I don't have your Sarah Hutchins in my line, or in the Hutchens/Hutchins files I'm working on. I did some checking, however, and found some conflicting information. You mentioned that on William Henry Vance's death certificate, it stated that he and his parents were born in South Carolina. If the information I've found is correct, William married Louisa Bernadine Wingrn, who was born in Sept. 1856 in Sweden, and they had a daughter named Thelma, born in Feb. 1893 in California. In 1900 and 1910, Louisa and Thelma were living in San Francisco. (In 1910, their names were recorded as Lillie and Alma.) In 1920, they were living in Oakland, Alameda Co., California. Thelma was married to Walter G. Westman. On the 1900 and 1920 census, it was recorded that Thelma's father was born in Georgia. Is this the right family? Also, on the 1900 census, Louisa was enumerated as married (for 8 years), and on the 1910 and 1920 census she was enumerated as widowed.

I also found a William H. Vance, born about 1851 in South Carolina, both parents born in South Carolina. In 1880, he was living in a boarding house in San Francisco. His occupation was "Pedestrian." He isn't found in 1900. In 1910, he was living in Township 2, Mariposa Co., California. He was a farmer. On the census report, he was enumerated as divorced. He isn't found in 1920, but in 1930 he was living in Township 1, Mariposa Co., California. He was enumerated as "single", and had no occupation. No marriage record is found to show who he was married to.

In either case, William isn't found on any of the census reports prior to 1880, nor are his parents. Neither is Sarah Hutchins found on the 1850 census. However, she and James were likely married by the time the 1850 census was taken.

Sorry I couldn't be of help. If there's anything else I can do, just let me know.

Hal

My husband's great grandfather was William Henry Vance. On his death certificate his parents' are listed as James Vance and Sarah Hutchins and that all three were born in South Carolina. Do you have any information on this Sarah Hutchins? I am looking for her parents' and possibly some siblings. William was born in either 1849 or 1851, February 3rd. He died in Merced, California on August 30, 1937.

On 24 Dec 2000, you responded to someone's inquiry about Thomas Hutchins (1575), who married Ann Anderson, beine from Towcester, Northamptonshire, England. In your response, you mentioned that you descend from Thomas Hutchins and Elizabeth Vestal. Could Thomas' name acctually be John Thomas Hutchins? Reason: In my research, I have a John Hutchins, b. 30 June 1777 in Cedar Creek, Hanover Co., Virginia, who married on 1 July 1802 in Surry Co., N.C. to Elizabeth Vestal, b. 17 Apr. 1785 in Virginia. (Ref.: North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004 Record, and 1850 Federal Census, Surry Co., N.C.) The children and grandchildren of John Hutchins and Elizabeth Vestal match your descendancy as you outlined it in you posting noted above.

Thanks for your help.
Hal Hutchens
halhutchens@yahoo.com

No doubt, you probably have the missing information regarding John Hutchins' (1611) wife by now. Just in case, he married abt 1639 in Virginia to Mary "Polly" Strangeman, who was born in 1615 in Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, and died in 1684 in Virginia. She was the daughter of Hugh Strangeman and Norma Gossett, and the granddaughter of Edward Strangeman and Sarah "Sally" Oates.

Descendants of Thomas Hutchins (1753-1843)

I have either just concluded 30 years of research or opened the doors wide for continuing research, hopefully the latter. I've worked hard over the years on the descendants of Thomas Hutchins (1753-1843) who came from Wake Co. and settled in Rutherford Co. NC. The descendants of course spread through several places, but those who recognize the name should be pleased. I hope that this really helps us all work together on these families. Rutherford, Wake, Yancey, Mitchell and Cleveland are some of the most populated counties with descendants in them as well as Washington Co. TN and Clay Co. KY, but again, they've spread far and wide. Take time to visit the site www.hutchinsfamilytree.com and let me know what you think. The site is not entirely complete and eventually will only allow subscribers to view it. Here are the most common surnames listed in the tree

Hutchins, Waters, Weaver, Yelton, Smawley, Green, Toney, Guffey, Biggerstaff, Sweezy, Towery, Epley, Farris, McMahan, Allen, Holder, Bradley, Davis, Johnson, Earles, Melton, Beatty,
he was my great-great-grandfather. He fought in WW1 or there abouts and lost a leg. he was married 5 or more times to Eva Nelle Keel, Jennie Rogers, Lizzie Cullie Holt, Ida Mae Richardson and Bonnie (Unknown). He only had two children by Eva Nelle but had plenty of step children.
I need any information that you might have. My ggrandmother said his name was Noah Henry, but I can't find any records anywhere with that name. I did find on ancestry.com a William Henry Hutchins in North carolina who married a few ladies named above but I don't have a ancestry.com account and can't verify that. Could I ask someone who does have an account to look for me?
Thanks!
John Webster Hutchins (?-abt 1912)

Hello! I'm looking for information about John Webster Hutchins. He was supposedly born in Illinois, but we don't know when. We know he was dead after 1911/2-ish. He may or may not have died trying to stop a bar fight. I find this story to be a little farfetched.

John married Ladonne/Ladonna/Donnea/Donna Allhands (depending on what census decided to spell it however)

They had two children, Aroma Webster (1909-1966) and Clara Ruth (1911-?). Aroma married my great grandmother, Dorothy True. Clara married someone with the last name Martin.

I think at some point they lived in MO, because that's where Clara was born.

The Allhands were from Champaign Co, IL.

In the 1920 census Ladonna is listed as a widow in Centralia IL with Aroma and Clara.

I read an old thread on the message boards on Ancestry.com where you stated that your ggggrandfather(Elex/ Alex) Hutchins was from Leake County and that you were from AA descent. My ggggrandfather was from Attala county
Mississippi, which is right next to Leake. Other counties of interest are Yalobusha & Water Valley. In latter years, Marshall, Benton, Tippah & Alcorn counties. My gggrandfather moved his family to Memphis, TN around 1888. Oral history says that Alex was a slaveholder who had a lot of children with a slave whome he loved very much (my ggggrandmother), Henrietta (Morgan?). One of whom was my gggrandfather, Tobe. I don't have info prior to 1870 census. I'd like to collaborate with you on any family stories you might have. I hope you are still at Ancestry.com.

Benjamin Perry Hutchins

I am looking for information on Benjamin Perry Hutchins (particularly interested in his parents). Benjamin Hutchins was my great grandfather who was born in Orangeburg Co, SC approx Aug 1846. He was married to Susana with whom he had 5 sons; Jeff T., Ben G., Jessie B (who was my grandfather), Quilley and Samuel Dibble. Benjamin Hutchins died in Bowman, SC on 1/28/1915 and is buried in Bowman cemetary. I have a copy of his death certificate but his son Samuel did not know his grandparents name at the time of his fathers death. I would appreciate any information you may have. Thanks

Joseph Edward Hutchins - Elizabeth Jaquest

Looking for ancestry information for both Joseph and Eliz - they wer born in England 1848 and 1850 in the Middlesex region and immigrated 1st to Canada and then to Fall River Mass, USA. They were married in 1871 in England. I have a pretty complete history forward but don't have anything other than Eliz's Parents are Edward and Sarah with siblings of John, Frederick and Edward (could be others as the census record shows them already to be young adults).

I am looking for info on William Hutchins, b. in Dorchester, Dorset, England.about 1748 and died 11 Nov. 1832 in Colchester, ON, Canada and is buried on Family Farm Cemetery in Essex County, ON. Land Grant application of 1796 states that he "served his King and country for a period of 16 years as a seaman and ship's carpenter." He received 141 acres on Lot 82 running down to Lake Erie at Colchester.ON.
William may have been joined in British Navy by brother Charles. William was in the Niagara area in 1788 when he married 14-year-old Amy Tamar Dennis, formerly of Bucks County,PA. The Dennis family were Quakers but no further Quaker records appear as Amy married out. I have been searching for many years for the family in England from where William originated.
Re: Amelia Hutchins

I am also looking for information on this young lady. She seems to match the bits of information that we have for my husband's birth mother.

We know that his birth mother died shortly after his birth in 1971 and that she was married to a man (not the birth father) serving in Vietnam when she gave birth to him.

In searching the records on Ancestry.com, a woman named Amelia Hutchins seems to match all the infomation we have on his birth mother. Amelia Hutchins was married to a John C. Ready in 1969. I have not been able to locate information about whether or not John Ready was involved in the Vietnam war or not.

If anyone has additional information on these individuals or their family, please share it.
Simon Hutchins

Searching for information on Simon Hutchins, wife and children. This is what I have:
1800 census: Kinston, Lenoir Co NC
Simon Hutchins: 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26.

1801 Summons for Simon Hutchins to appear and testify against Hardee Croom and others, 15 July 1801, Lenoir Co NC

1810 census: Lenoir Co NC:
Simon Hutchings: 00010, 10010, 0

1820 census - there is no Simon in Lenoir County - however, I pick him up in Jefferson Co GA
Simon Hutchens: 000110; 11010
in 1820 there is also a Elijah Hutchens in Jefferson Co, GA: 110110,00100

Jefferson Co GA marriages:
Elijah Hutchins married Polly Carlisle, 14 Mar 1819
Christian Hutchins married John Bass, 11 July 1832
Henrietta Hutchins married Hamrick Phillips, 3 Mar 1813
Lucinda Hutchins married Charles Coalman, 26 Feb 1833
Nancy Hutchins married James Spradley, 10 Oct 1830

1830 in Jefferson Co GA
Elizabeth Hutchins:1 male 10-15 and 1 female 30-40.
Simon Hutchins: 1 male 50-60 and 1 female 15-20 and one female 50-60.
no other Hutchins in Jefferson Co, GA.

1838 Macon County GA tax digest:
next door to Henry Melton

1840 census: Macon Co GA:
Simon Hutchins: 1 male 60-70 and 1 female 60-70; was 4 lines away from Henry Melton

1850 census: Dist 757, Macon Co GA:
301-301 Simon Hutchins, 72, farmer, 1000, NC
Mary, 50, NC
(no other Hutchins in Macon Co GA in 1850)

1860 census: Militia Dist 814, Macon Co GA (Lanier Post Office):
255-255, Mary Hutchens, 56, farmer, 300, 100, NC
Jane Schism, 25, SC
Kizan (female) Schism, 23, SC

I don't see Mary in 1870 census - she may have remarried.

So from this information:
Simon Hutchins
born ca 1778, NC
married twice, first marriage unknown. Second marriage to Mary -----, b ca 1800, NC.
died between 1850-1860, probably Macon Co GA
Children - only from first marriage:
1. male born 1794-1804 - married or deceased by 1830
2. female born ca 1804-1810, married or deceased by 1830.
3. female born ca 1810-1815 (I believe this to be Nancy who married Henry Melton.

It said that a Nancy Hutchins married Henry Melton - and it is also said that Nancy Hutchins married Matthew Melton. Matthew and Henry were brothers.

Nancy who married Matthew Melton was born 24 Oct 1800 in either SC or GA and she died 10 Aug 1868, Marion Co GA. While she could have been the second child of Simon and his wife, I do not believe this is so. Not only do the ages not match, but the place of birth would not match as Simon and his wife were living in North Carolina then.

However, the Nancy who married Henry Sampson Melton was born ca 1812 in North Carolina - matching up perfectly with
the third child of Simon. This Nancy died after 1880 as she is shown in that census - in Terrell County GA with parents born in North Carolina. Plus, Simon lived in close proximity to Henry Melton.

Of interest too is Henry Melton was administrator for the estate of James Spradley starting in 1834 in Macon Co GA and applied for letters of dismission May 29, 1839 in Macon Co GA. And, there was a Nancy Hutchins who married James Spradley, 10 Oct 1830 in Jefferson Co GA. First child for Henry and Nancy was born in 1833 - so I wonder if Nancy Hutchins was married briefly to James Spradley in 1830, and then remarried to Henry Melton?

So, who were the other children of Simon and his first wife? Who were the Schism women who were living with Mary Hutchins in 1860 census in Macon County, GA? Who was the first wife? Where is Simon buried? Is there a probate or land records for Simon?

Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima, Lawrenceburg, TN
