From a family letter... Spelling in this transcription was Hylund, but all other spellings mentioned in family documents were Hyland. Andrew (the first Hyland mentioned) was the father of Julia Ann (nee Hyland) Keating, my g-g-grandmother. Any cousins out there? - John
Andrew Hylund was born in Dublin. He was the son of an only son for three generations. His father George was also born in Dublin in the same lovely home of his father. It was located where the courthous now stands on one of the principal streets. George was educated by the Jesuits and at one time he and his son Andrew both wished to become priests but both changed their minds.
Originally the Hylands came from Scotland and settled in the City of Dublin. They claim three generations.
Andrew was a merchant--his father's trade--"Mens cloth and suits, called Cassimere".
His (Andrew's) wifes name was Elizabeth Moore, born in Dublin. Her father was John Moore. He was a cow Dr. by profession. He died young leaving a large family- 7 boys and 6 girls. Her mother Kathleen Clarey, also born in Dublin.
Uncle Patrick was an adopted boy brought up by our grandparents. The older boys were soon in Stamford, Conn. and were well equipped to take their places in the business world. In a few years Uncle George found himself at the head of a large construction Co.
Uncle Thomas opened a dairy in Plainfield, N.J. and continued in it all his life.
Uncle William had a grocery store. He used to visit us frequently in Frostburg, was the life and joy of the house when there, Sang al the Irish songs.
Uncle Patrick also lived in Stamford and ran a dyeing business.
Within a year they had a home for their dear mother and the younger children, James, Joseph, John, Catherine, Mary, Elizabeth and Emma(Irma?) They arrived in the spring and the following winter my dear grandmother died and Aunt Catherine and John and Joseph died soon after to share their mother's happiness.
