LOL So are what are we to each other?I am Martha Jane Hylton Lancasters granddaughter. My Mom is Goldie Jane Lancaster and so forth.Well this is really very wonderful,to bad I cannot get anywhere with the other side of my family.Nice to meet you cousin???My name is Lori by the way and I was born a KOHAL.I was told by my great aunt Ruby Hylton that when Jacob and Louisa left west virginia in a cattle car with their livestock that Louisa was preggers with my grandma Martha and when they arrived in Oregon and stepped off the train car that the snow was up to the bellies of their horses. My Mom Goldie did at one time have a picture of the cabin they built and where Martha was born before it got so old it fell.My grandfather Albert Stephen Lancaster was Martha's 2nd marriage, the 1st husband was BOYER and they had 2 children both males. My mother did do a great deal of the Lancaster side and got as far back as England. The sad part is that for whatever reason (no one will tell me and mom died with it)my grandfather in 1947 sighned my grandmother Martha into the Oregon State Hospitol and divorced her,at that time my mom was 6 years old.Martha was finally released the year I was born in 1967.I never even met Martha until I was about 9.I still have the faintest idea why!!At one time there was talk of a mental illness and she was taking medication for it.And I know that Simmie Oliver Hylton did time in prison,I have no idea why.I have a picture of the Hylton family reunion here in Oregon. It has Martha's sister Ruby in it,and all her kids and such. There are more but I cannot remember all who is in it.
you might be a part of my great grandpa Hylton's other family. My mother told me he had another family at the end of the rail line that he kept secret. We've always wondered who the other family is. Apparently someone found out. I've never heard of Sillin or Kidd. Yes, his daughter was living with him. She was my grandma's sister and hard of hearing.

There can't be that many Maston Hyltons who died in Southern California at the age of 99 in the 50's or 60's.

Please call me or let me call you. We'll work on the details. My Uncle did an extensive geneology on the Sillin branch of the family and knows about Mary (his mother) & Maston Hylton (his uncle).

Both of us can learn something from him.

I'm 71, apparently a generation ahead of you. When I visited Great Uncle Maston's family, I believe he was living with a daughter. Does that sound possible? Do you have older relatives who might know about the Sillin branch?
Does the last name Kidd ring a bell with you? I'm not sure if that's who we visited or not.

Well, I could babble incoherently on this subject, but we won't get anywhere until we have a chance to talk.

Maston Sillin, Jr
Grand Prairie, TX
214-477-4975 (Cell)
972-262-6606 (Res)
mastoman@att.net

I've never heard anyone mention a Mary Virginia Hylton. The Maston I'm talking about had a brother. But I don't know much about his family and I never met any of his siblings. The story I'm told is that Great Grandpa Hylton was born on Kickapoo Island.

Your Great Grandpa, Maston Hylton, was my Great Uncle. I met him in California when I was a kid, perhaps age 12 or so.

While on that trip from Kansas City, KS I remember visiting a boy, about my age, who was part of that branch of the family. I was fascinated by watching Gorgeous George wrestle on that new thing called "television". Also, I remember the boy's scaring the wits out of me by insisting we listen to "Inner Sanctum" on the radio.

Maston Hylton's sister, Mary Virginia Hylton (Sillin) was my Grandmother. As I understand it, both she and Maston were born in Virginia and relocated to Kansas.

My father, Maston Sillin, Sr. was named aftr Maston Hylton.

Please let me hear from you.
Susannah Slusher Hylton wife of Elijah

I am trying to locate a father or sibling for Susannah, wife of Elijah Hylton. Has anyone looked at other Slusher/Schlosser families in the same areas to see if Susannah might be associated with them? I found the following Slushers in Virginia in the 1787 reconstructed census.
Frederick Slusher, taxed on self, 6 horses and 16 cattle;
Christopher, taxed under Frederick ( probably over 18 and under 21) and
John, taxed on self, 1 horse, 1 cattle.
All living in Frederick Co.

The census records have been lost, but were reconstructed using tax rolls.

Also, I'm looking for a place of birth for Elijah.
George, his father, lived in Fluvanna Co. for a while and his brother George was married in Fork Union (Fluvanna Co.).
Would it be possible for Elijah to have been born there or is more likely that it was Goochland where his parents were married or New Kent where George was born?
Any thoughts?
Janice

Hello, I was going through some very old emails and came across this one. (YOU may already have found your information if not maybe I can help) You say your father is/was Douglas Ray Hylton...can you tell me when he was born and maybe where you new that he lived. And your mothers name would be great. Sometimes it takes that just to find what you need to get started. I did find a Douglas in the 1930 census and he was 6 yrs old then.

barbduncan@yahoo.com

Samuel Edward Hilton of Pine, Missouri b. abt 1910, Howard Hilton, Harris Hilton

Known as Edward Hilton. Documentation shows him in Helena, Arkansas in 1944 at the age of 34 and that it states that he was born in Pine, Missouri. I found a 1920 Census of a Hilton family in Chelsea Twnshp, Rogers County, Oklahoma. Ed-37,head; Jennie-25,wife; Edward-9,son; Harris-7,son; Howard-5,son. In 1930 Cesus for Pine Twnshp, Ripley County, Missouri, it shows Howard listed as "nephew" as if he returned to live with relatives. I can't find Edward after 1920 Census. Are Samuel Edward, Harris, and Howard brothers? Is there anyone who can share family history?

Re: John Hilton of Bristol England

I am following up on my previous post to clarify that it was not my intention to criticize or disparage Paul Hilton in anyway. He and I have been corresponding about the likely origins of John Hilton of New Kent County and I thought that readers of this thread might be interested in our exchange.

My primary concern here is to rebut the assertion that John Hilton was born in Bristol, England in 1665. Until someone can come forward with evidence of this, we have to consider this claim completely "bogus." Because this information has now circulated widely, we have to aggressively point out its lack of substance.

What follows is an edited excerpt for one of my subsequent exchanges with Paul Hilton that elaborates on this issue.

Paul

Right now I am primarily interested in tracking down the details of the life of John Hilton, who was apparently the first in my family line in North America. Thousands of us can trace our ancestry back to him, but for the moment, the line seems to stop there. Most of what you have posted on Ancestry, com is consistent with the sources of which I am aware. However, I felt that your mention of his coming to Virginia at age 9 was based on faulty information, so I wanted others who use the site to be aware of this. I am also not sure what records pertaining to him were destroyed in the London fires of the 17th century. Unless he were born in London, records pertaining to his life would be in the country and parish in which he was born. These records were not centralized in 17th century England.

I suspect that you came up with age nine by substracting 1665, the alleged date of his birth, from 1674, the date of the Bristol indenture. The problem is that there is no proof that he was born in 1665. Moreover, such an interpretation is inconsistent with the indenture records that survive in Bristol. Because of the length of his indenture (four years) he had to be at least 17 years old in 1674 which means that he must have been born no later than 1657. My guess is that he was likely born some time in the early 1650's, given that he was "retired" as the church sexton around 1720 and died shortly thereafter. This, of course, assumes that the John Hilton indentured in 1674 was the John Hilton of New Kent County. Circumstantial evidence in the land records for York and New Kent County suggests that the two are one in the same, but we do not know that for certain.

Someone came up with the idea that John Hilton was born in Bristol in 1665 and unfortunately posted it on the Internet. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence for this claim. I have no idea where it started, but as far as I can tell, it is completely baseless. I asked you repeatedly if you had any hard historical evidence to support this, and you could not produce any. I think it is important that we not post claims about the Hilton family unless we can verify them. It is unfair to mislead people, even when we have the best of intentions. However, I certainly never meant to imply that you knowlingly "faked" anything. I was just trying to suggest that you made the mistake that many people make--they find something on the Internet and they assume that it is true. Often it isn't. That is why professionally trained historicans always insist on proof.

Best wishes

Gordon Hylton

Below is the text of an email I recently sent to Paul Hilton who has been extremely generous in sharing his information with me.

Paul

Thanks for the link to the My Family site. There is a wealth of information there. However, I find nothing to support the claim that our John Hilton was born in Bristol in 1655 or 1665. It really isnt fair to others to post information on the Internet unless you are sure that it is true, or unless you identify the sources on which your speculation is based. To simply say that you learned about it from someone in England really isnt enough.

I will keep you posted on my own research. The English parish records that have been compiled by the Mormon Church contain the names of a number of John Hiltons born in the mid-17th century. Unfortunately, John Hilton/Hillton/Helton was a fairly common name in England in the 1600's. Anyone of these could be our John Hilton. On the other hand, he may have been from a parish whose records did not survive or which have not been catalogued. What we are lacking is a clue.

If he was the John Hilton was was indentured in Bristol in 1674, then he could not have been born any later than 1657--the indenture was for four years. Had he been younger than 17 the servitude period would have lasted until he turned 21, and would have been for more than four years. The circumstantial evidence in the Virginia land records indicate that that John Hilton came to the York/New Kent County area. (Unfortunately, the New Kent deed records were destroyed during the Civil War but the York records survive.)

A strong circumstantial case can be made that the John Hilton who was indentured in Bristol in 1674 and our John Hilton are the same person. However, we appear to have hit a wall when it comes to finding information about his life in England.

J.
WOW!! Paul you sure have done a lot of work. I've been doing my family research off & on since I was 12 or 13. My grandmother used to tell me stories of distant family members coming over on "potato boats" I think that she was pulling my leg. And now that I'm older I don't know where my family on paternal grandparents side came from. I don't have a lot of info but after seeing how many names you have just wondering if you could pick up anything and help me a bit? I live in NC and my grandparents were from southern MS. Okay, here goes my 2nd great-grandmother was a Hilton. She married a Leonard W. Smith in about 17 DEC 1874. Now here is where my troubles are. I've been told by my grandmother that my 2nd great-grandmother was Native American that to this day remaines to be seen. But some where I've seen that her father was a John James Hilton. My 2nd great-grandparents are buried in Brookhaven,MS. Since I've seen so many English Hiltons I thought that maybe I should ask you if most Hiltons are English?
Thank you for any help or a place that you can point me in. And thank you for all the work you have done.

Cindy

Re: John Hilton of Bristol England

Good Evening FRIENDS. I am Paul Morris Hilton of New Brunswick, Canada. I have 85 pages of Genealogy on John Helton which is the name he would probably go by. There are approx. 20 spellings of the surname Hilton. I have one family in this Genealogy who has 5 different spellings of the Hilton Surname. He would have been 9 if age and dates are correct - when he came to Virginia. I received my Genealogy from a Cousin in California who actually was born in New Kent Co., VA. and seems to be a relative of John Helton. He was indentured upon comeing to US. Bristol would probably be the port of departure for John and the other passengers and not the place of birth- but we are not sure of this. The fires of London of 1666 and 1679 caused the great loss of documentation. We have not been able to
find the parents of John Helton or Hilton. He probably left Durham or another North Eastern area ( Sunderland). I am not in contact with Eric Lamberton any longer as his observations seem to ahve changed for most of the documented data which he previously had different feelings or thoughts on. He is at present trying to change the History of the Maine Hiltons- musch of which has been documented already. The basis of religious belief would not jibe with age and date of birth. It is the feeling of
some of the family that he was probably adopted or took the name of a Helton or Hilton with whom he lived in US after leaving England. This latter comment is not certain but is in the thoughts of us. We still try and find data which may confirm more data. I ahve been working on the Hilton and Morris Family Trees since I was 14 and my family knew of my love for History and turned over documentation then held by them. I am now 67 and work on any connections everday on my Computer. I have 86000 names in my current Data Base. Thanks for taking time to read this info. I look forward to hearing from you at any time and will share any data with you.Bye for now and all the best in your Research. Sincerely,Paul Morris Hilton - tinym81@nb.sympatico.ca

Do these names mean anything to anyone? I'm pretty sure both lived in Virginia. Curtis Elliot may have been born around 1768 and either born or lived in Montgomery County, VA. I don't know anything about Ella. They had a daughter named Elizabeth Elliot born around 1810 in Virginia. She married David Trine about 1842 in Ohio. Been doing a little research on the Elliot name, but thought I better put out a message in case someone recognized the names. Thanks.
Rae Trine

Looking for Alexander Hyltone born in Illinois in/about 1887, Dad was born in Pennsylvania and Mom in Kentucky. Cannot find records other than 1930 census for Missouri. Dad and Mom birth place at odds with family stories of them coming from Scotland. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Cindy. I am having a bit of a problem as I use a different address on other sites. Could you send me an Email to tinym81@nb.sympatico.ca and then I can contact you at your Email address. I will give you a bit of history of
of the Hilton Family. I ahve tried to send more data but I cannot seem to send this through. The Hiltons go abck to beyond the Celts, Scandinavians, Norman French, English then North American. There are approx 20 spellings of the Hilton name. I ahve a CD of the Genealogy of both lots of info and will send them to you- NO CHARGE. Sincerely Yours, Paul Morris Hilton. Are you connected to William Hilton of Hilton Head Island. I am related to his 1/2 Brothers William and Edward of New Hampshire ??

Hi Cindy. I will look up the info you have given me re your family. contact me at tinym81@nb.sympatico.ca and I will send you an Email. I have to look for some info. Donny Hylton - a cousin of mine sent me a Hylton, Helton, Hilton Genealogy which took him many years to collect. Some of it was given to him by another perrson who got a lot of my family material from me originally. My MOM and GRANDMOTHER worked on the history back in the 1920's up to about the 1970's. I actually started getting into history back in the 1950's. I have the Hilton Coat of Arms which dates back to 1272. Hylton Castle is our Ancestral Home in Sunderland, Durham CCo. England. Actually the Hilton Name originated back past the Celts, then Scandinavians, Norman French of William the Conqueror and then English and probably there are Scots, Irish and Welsh mixed into the soup mix. I can send you a copy on CDs. of both Genealogies
When time permits, get in touch as I do not have a full time connection to Ancestry.com Bye for now, LOL, PAUL MORRIS HILTON

Will Hylton living in Miami Co. KS and died there 1941

Perhaps this bit of information might be of interest to Franklin Co. and Miami Co. Hylton's.
In a collection of old family letters of mine from Lane, Franklin Co. Kansas, my grandfather mentions attending the funeral Will Hylton. Mr. Coffey, Walter Secrest and I were at Will Hylton's (you know the Hyltons out eastward by Quaker Church). He was killed by a inmate of the Asylum at Osawatomie as he was working with them on a ditch job in the grounds there. He struck him on the head with a heavy pick, killing him almost at once, never conscious after being struck. It was his burial we attended. He once taught school around in this and Miami Co."
