if you look at Donovan Rosa's book it mentions Donovan-Island as a sub sept name. My family is related some how. The Donovan who was a priest reaserching this died while we were mailing each other so I am also stumped. But he said my family from Drummig Skibbereen were O'Donovan-Smokes who were cousins of O'Donovan-Island

O'Donovan-Iland or Iland

I am Peter O'Donovan-Iland born 1957 Essex,England
My father was Daniel O'Donovan-Iland 1920-1968 Born London, England
His father Daniel O'Donovan-Iland 1872?-1924 Born London, England
His father also Daniel O'Donovan-Island (note the 's') 1840?-1911 Born ?

This is an unusal surname and does not appear to have been a
combination due to marriage, at least for the last few generations.
The Iland part of the surname does appear to have been spelt
with an 's' at some time but was either an incorrect entry on a death
or perhaps it was removed in error. In any event I have little
knowledge of the origin of the name or indeed of the Irish heritage.
I have contacted The O'Donovan in County Cork, Ireland but he was unable
to offer any information the origins.
Can anyone offer any clues?

Iland surname

Interesting stuff.....I have come across a number of Ilands in my search on the web. There is a Harry Iland in Australia at Adelaide University but he is Polish background and does not appear to be any connection. I have also had some contact with Emily Iland. As far as I am aware the spelling is a change from Island, although I can understand the Hand.....my name is often mispelt that way. It is interesting to note the link with Cork as I was told when I was young that our family had come from there several generations ago. When would your Gt Gt Grandmother have lived?
Rgds

Sorry not to have replied earlier but I had changed my email address.

As far as I can ascertain the 'Iland' part is an agnomen and was used to differentiate between close family members. So you would have O'Donovan-Baad, O'Donovan-Rossa etc. O'Donovan-Iland was I am sure originally Island and was most likely to identify the O'Donovan family living on Inchydoney Island close to Clonakilty, Co Cork.

Not sure that helps you much I am afraid

I have a great-uncle with middle name of Iland. I have wondered if it is a family name as most of his siblings had middle names connected to some branch of the family. His Mother was Stewart or Stuart straight from Ireland. His Paternal Garandparents were from the families of Walker, Love, Gartley also from Northern Ireland. Most came to Ohio in mid 1800's.
Wondering if there is any new information on this Iland name?
Thnaks, Maggie

Iland/Island Family in Sligo

The information that I have has come from various sources,
Emily Iland traveled to Sligo and even talked with a relative who runs an inn. She has done research on the family. Also a cousin, Joan Thyne, in Canada gave me a great deal of information. My grandmother was/is Eva Iland, no middle name, her father was James Iland born in Ballymote, Sligo
his father was Michael Iland also born in Ballymote. Michael married Alice Moore. Michael's father was John Iland. He is buried in Ballymote and fought in the Crimeon war. My aunts, who are now gone traveled to Ballymote quite often and said that the only thing left of the homestead was the foundation. The cousin in Canada wrote quite a narrative on James, my ggrandfather. It seems that the family came across during the potato famine and settled in Canada.

I have given the bulk of my information to my son, Larry Arthur, who lives in El Paso, Texas. Whatever information I have I will be willing to share, if anyone is interested.

Regards,
Dianne Deignan Arthur
dilea1@attbi.com
Bremerton, Washington

Good morning

Thank you for your kind message -- and you're English is very good, much better than my French.

Yes, it sounds as though there is no connection, as my relatives were named IRELAND, and the registrar wrote this as ILAND by mistake. But Peter Donovan in Sussex, England is a real Iland and is doing research on the name. So far, he has found a few people in USA, Australia and Eastern Europe, so this ties in with your own experience. I have lost touch with Peter but you can find him on the web.

So you are from Belgium. I have Belgian ancestors who were driven out in 1565 -- they were Walloon protestants and settled in Norwich under special licence from Queen Elizabeth !.

Best regards for the holiday season.

Nicholas Hall

As I mentioned in my posting, Ealand, and the variants listed, most likely derive from the ancient Eland family of Yorkshire, England. There is no evidence it was ever a family name in Germany or Holland. In favor of this assumption is the fact that there are a number of Ealand families in England today whereas the 'white pages' listings for Germany show none. The only way, of course, to prove your own family origins is to trace your ancestors back generation by generation to their homeland.

Good luck in your research.

Hi

Further research has shown that the maiden name of my Gt Gt Grandmother, Mary, was in fact IRELAND not ILAND, as written by the registrar on the birth certificate of her daughter, Ellen. I've traced this line back to 1813, the birth date of my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather in the Stepney area of East London, England. Further research is needed to show whether the Ireland's are from the Emerald Isles or whether this is yet another corruption.

Any information on any family with this or similar names in London would be much appreciated.

Good luck
Nicholas

Hi

Part of the frustration of geneological research is dealing with the illegible handwriting or bad practice of registrars in Victorian times. I spent 6 months on a search for the rare Iland clan (meeting some charming people in the pursuit), only to find out that my Gt Gt Grandmother's family name was IRELAND which the registrar wrote down as ILAND. In one sense I'm sad not to be connected with the less than 100 ILAND's who exist (mainly in Australia and the US), but it gets me closer to my Irish roots and is very satisfying to find that, as one of the 70mn overseas Irish, I carry the name of the auld countrie in my ancestors' surname.

Best regards and good luck to all you Iland's out there.

Nicholas Hall

Re: Iland and variants

At the end of the seventeenth century a Richard ILAND sailed from Belfast to settle in the Carolinas where the name was recorded as EILAND. This spelling has persisted amongst his many descendents, pronounced by most as eye-land (as in my own family), by some as ee-land. Whilst searching for the origin of this family I find increasing evidence that British based ILANDS and EILANDS along with the variants ELAND, ILLAND, ISLAND, EYLAND, ELAUND, AILAND, ILANT, ELANT, AELAND, EALAND (probably the original Anglo Saxon word meaning land surrounded by water) and others I have missed, derive and descend from an ancient and powerful landed family in Western Yorkshire who took their name from the village that is today called Elland (of Calderdale). The family prospered and spread from before the conquest until well into the late Tudor period. This accounts for much of the erratic orthography and the loss of connexion between the farflung families and their origin. There is a small, well written book on the Village Elland including a chapter on the Eland Family by Albert Rinder. (e.mail me for address) There is also a fine web site for the Halifax area in general that gives details on the History of Elland ... http://www.halifax-today.co.uk/specialfeatures/triviatrail/m...
