Florence Emily Iles (Q1 1887 St. Georges, Bristol England)

We are trying to trace the family of Florence Emily Iles who left for Canada in the early 1900's possibly with the support of the local Methodist Church? We think she returned to Liverpool from Quebec, Canada on the Empress of Ireland on the 24 Jun 1910. She is not on the 1911 census and we think she retuned to Canada before 1911, however it is not certain. The final note we have was her brother Percival (Percy) came out to stay in August 1919. However the story is that Florence had a new Husband/Partner and he refused to let Percy and his family stay. Percy and Family went down to the USA Portland and returned to Bristol in Spring 1920.

It is possible her surname was Esquinalt (?)at some stage but this is not certain.

We would love to hear from any of Florence's descendants or friends.

Afternoon,

Just to take this a slightly different direction.

I just found a co-worker in Chicago with the last name Iles. she married into the name and says her husbands family is from Sugartown, LA.

I asked my mom (maiden name Iles) about this and she said the following: Grandpa Joe Iles was born on the Toppinish Indian Res (Washinton State). I understood that the Iles family had immigrated from Nova Scotia. When they reached Kansas, some continued on west and another group went south towards New Orleans Actually when my parents were visiting in New Orleans, Dad looked up a Robert Iles in the city. We went to visit him and turned out Robert's Dad was an uncle of Grandpa Joe's Dad. Robert was married and had a couple of children, as I remember (no names.

Obviously, ya'll are talking about the Iles that headed south to New Orleans but some ended out West. My Grandpa Joe Iles settled in Washington State (little town called Dayton) and had three girls whith names that are familliar in earlier posts about the LA Iles group - Carol, Nancy and Elizabeth.

Love the name, unfortunately it died out here in Washington as my grandpa only had the three girls....it's now the middle name for my nephew. If anybody has geneology info they would wnat to share I'm sure my mom would appreciate it and maybe even be able to fill in some threads.

You can e-mail me at ssheely@expedia.com if you are interested.

Tahnks

After James died, Jane worked as a dressmaker and had her parents living with her. Her father William Isles was a butcher in Chipping Sodbury in 1830. He was married to Ann (Summers or Bevan trying to find out who she was). If anyone has any info re the Isles in Chipping Sodbury. I would greatly appreciate it.
Pauline

Ron, all very interesting. Yes, I was told by I think Nancy Iles of DeRidder that maybe she and others had searched up near Shreveport and that the plantation land is thickly overgrown and hard to search on, as in winter it is hunting season, and that is when the overgrowth is thinned out and best for searching. But hunting makes it difficult to be out looking for gravesites. Good luck. I'd love to see the site, wonder if there are any ruins? Interesting how William Jr. made it bigger than Dempsy did. Also there is a Black Iles family that seem to be descended from a child that William Sr. fathered with a slave lady on another plantation. You know something interesting, my great grandfather Howell WIlliam Iles, had piercing blue eyes or at least they are light, it's a black and white picture. But that characteristic has carried down through my dad and his children, we all have very what people have said "pretty eyes" blue and piercing. Wondering if that came from Dempsy and William Sr.?

Also, my great great great grandfather through Julia Anna Gill, was Hardy Coward, a contemporary of William Iles Sr. He was supposedly a representative to the Louisiana Senate, and Hardy is buried near Lake Charles with a headstone. It seems that people as successful as William Iles Jr. and even William Iles Sr., would have had headtones. Hardy Coward's stone is old, dated 1844 when he died, someone sent me a rubbing and photo of it, although I have not visited it.

Paula,
I may be remembering totally wrong about the William Iles Sr. tombstone. I will check all of my records and try to find what I think I saw. I do know that William Iles Sr. lived in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. He was a stockman. (Raised Cattle) He would have died in that area where his homestead is. I don't think he would have been in the Shreveport area. But it is possible since most of his son Wm. Iles, Jr and Nancy Thompson's offspring lived up there. George Washington Iles moved down to Sabine parish, Texas near Brookeland and Hemphill, Tx. I have photo's of many of the graves in the Brookeland Cemetery. I have a Lakehouse on Toledo Bend near Hemphill in Sabine Parish, Tx.

Wm. Iles Sr. could have been up there though especially if Elizabeth Pace had alread passed on. So he could have died up there with his son and been buried on the plantation along with my GGGG grandfather John Thompson who lived on the plantation in his own cabin. I have a copy of John's succession. John had a 16 yr old girl living with him near his death date of Mar 1839. The girl was most likely one of Wm. Iles Jr.'s daughters that was helping to take care of John. John did have 3 slaves at his death and none of them were that young. I believe that the blacks with him was a woman and her two grown sons. They were named in the succession. The two men were Ceaser and Anthony if memory serves me right and the woman was Lucy or Louise. The hand writing was indecipheral. Wm Iles Jr. by the way was the Administrator of the succession.

Willim Iles Jr.'s wife Nancy and her brother Archibald were named as co-administrators. Archibald could not read or write so he was strictly on there out of respect I would imagine. Arch by the way never received any thing from the estate. At least it was not in the succession and also two of Archibald's children a female and a male received money from the sale of the assets. In thier receipts (I have copies) they stated that they were receiving their share of their fathers share of John Thompson's estate. That meant that Archibald was dead by 1844. 1844 is the date that was on the receipts.

I have been to the Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood and I have been to the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Mooringsport and have looked at every stone that is still there and not shttered to pieces and right now I can't remember finding a single Iles stone there. One lady that I communicated with swears that she has seen the stone belonging to Wm. Iles Jr. However she could not remember which cemetery it was in. She said she remembers it well. She said it was a tall stone the top of which was several feet over her head. I think she said it was a double stone too. I went to the Smith Street cemetery also with no luck. The Iles family seemed to disappear from that area for the most part.

It is my belief that they are buried on the plantation that they owned. The graves might be covered in trees and debris by now though. I have not been on the plantation grounds yet. That is my goal either this year or the first part of 2013. I want to explore it in the cool weather but before much rain falls up there. I have to find out who owns the land now and get their permission. Also they may know of the graves location.

Another reason I think the graves are on the plantation grounds is the fact that Nancy continued to run the plantation until her death in April 16, 1864. One of Archibald Thompson's sons, Isaac N. Thompson was the overseer in 1860. I was able to locate two pages of Nancy Thompson Iles's succession. There were more pages I am sure but I could not locate them in the part of the courthouse I was in. There are more pages up there if I can locate them. On the pages was a listing of what each of her children received from the estate. It was considerable. Somewhere between 15K and 20K each. In those cases where a child was deceased then the share was divided between the grand children. One of the groups was the Daniels children. One of Wm and Nancy Thompson Iles girls married an S. N. Daniels and she died pretty young.

I have a lot of pieces of the ILes family but just need to nail down where they are buried. The Shreveport area is an important area in the life of the Iles family and also the Sabine Co. Texas area.

Enough for now. Maybe this will get your interest up. I need help in getting to the bottom of the Iles family. Wm. ILes is as much a part of my genealogy as John Thompson's genealogy.

Regards,
Ronald Thompson

Hi Ron, I wonder if you've seen William Iles Jr.'s gravestone? That would be around Greenwood, LA near Shreveport, where his plantation was. If you've seen a headstone for William Iles Sr. then you've found the Holy Grail because people have been looking for that for years to no avail. Plus no death record. I have all of my research still just on paper, and it's in storage, will try to pull it out later today. And get back with you. I have a copy of John Iles' will of 1817, in fact I have a xerox of the Dempsy Iles Sr. Bible, and it has an entry for Elizabeth Pace Iles and William Iles in it for birth records I believe. That Bible went into hiding, and the person in LA who gave me a copy of that Bible said that the Bible went missing, one of Dempsy's youngest children married, and when he died, the 2nd wife kept it, they had no children together, and for some reason she got really possessive with it and now she's been dead for years. The person who gave the copy to me is Nancy Iles of DeRidder, LA originally, lives in Houston, wasn't married then, is about my age, I'm 61. I haven't been in touch with her for almost 20 years. But I am really glad to have a copy of those pages from that Bible. She had seen the Bible and copied the pages of records. But let me know about this William Iles headstone info. There are guesses as to about when he died that relate to a letter written in 1844 I believe by one of his sons in petition for his pension for the American Revolutionary War service. I'll have to get that out too. I think the letter sounds like William Sr. has died. I'll get back with you next week after I pull my records.

Paula,
I just found a copy of John Iles's will in Halifax Co Nc. It was posted on Ancestry.com by Marie Iles. In it it names John's wife as "Susanna and names his heirs,Sons Rhodham Iles, and William Iles, and Charles. Daughters Nancy, Fanny, Bettsy, and, Winnifred, and Susanna. The will was dated, 25 September, 1812.

I have also found that there are many instances on Ancestry stating that the death date of William Iles Sr. is 04 June 1844. I am doing further checking to see if they can back it up anywhere with a source. If I find one I will post it.

Regards,
Ron Thompson

Here is a copy of another post I made from a different message board, Archibald Thompson/Nancy Iles. You might find some things in it that will interest you.

"Paula,'

"We have talked way back in the past, several years ago. I need to re-examine what you know compared to what I know since so much water has flowed beneath the bridge.

You mentioned that you wondered why Nancy Iles Thompson is not buried next to her husband Archibald. You are believing that Archibald is buried in Merryville, La. What cemetery are you thinking he is buried in? The only one I know of is the Cannon cemetery where William Thompson, the son of Archibald is buried. Williams wife is not buried next to him unless it is in an unmarked grave. William's tombstone is one that was placed by the Daughters of the Confederacy. His middle initial is expressed as an M. but I have strong circumstantial evidence that his middle initial was F. for Frederick.
Paula,
I am remembering from memory, I know that I have seen the stone from William Iles's grave. I have it somewhere in my records. I am probably wrong about it being Sugartown. My genealogy is in a shamble right now. I am trying to organize everything after several unplanned computer crashes. Not to mention the new Family Tree Maker 2012 which seems to have a mind of its own. I have loaded it and tried to work with it but everytime I download and upload it the size of the file changes. My normal size under FTM-16 was about 8 mbyte. But un der 2012 it has shown up as low as 4 mbyte. I am trying to get rid of 2012 but it is a slow process.

More later.

Ron Thompson

Hello, I am a great great great granddaughter to William iles Sr. of Halifax County. I have been to the Baptist cemetery in Sugartown, and there is no gravestone there for William Iles Sr. I have never heard that either. And since he never lived in Sugartown, I highly doubt he is buried there. His son Dempsy as you probably already know is buried in Dry Creek with an elaborate headstone that was obviously put there in modern years. William's grandson Howell William Iles was my great grandfather, and he and wife Julia Anna Gill are buried in Sugartown, as they lived there. My grandfather John Gill Iles was born in Sugartown and lived there until 1909 when he moved to Port Arthur, Texas. He died in Port Arthur, but is buried in Sugartown. Many people have been searching for William Iles Sr.'s grave or burial place for many years and the exact year of his death has not been uncovered either.

Paula,'

His offspring had the name Frederick as a middle name or Fred and some of his grandchildren had the name Frederick. It was also common on his wife's side of the marriage. I have not personally laid eyes on the stone or grave sight but I am taking other peoples word on it because William Iles, Sr. is my GGGG grandfather and I trust their word. I was raised in Rosepine, Vernon Parish,La. which is near Sugartown and I intend to go there and check William's gravesite.

Dear Charlotte,

I'm checking for some info on Dempsy Iles Sr. quickly for my daughter for a school project, and came across this thread. It's been a while. I was wondering where you got the surname of Lnu (I've never heard of this name) for Susanna wife of John Iles of Halifax County, NC. Would love to chat with you and share info. Also where did you get the name Elizabeth Curtis and the birth year for John Iles? The furthest back on the Iles I can find is a John Iles of Isle of Wight Co., VA who was hanged in 1676 or 77 for being part of Nathaniel Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia. His widow was Frances Smith Norsworthy or Norsworthy Smith, can't remember offhand. She had been widowed once before John Iles. They had one son named John Iles, and many including myself think that he moved over to Halifax Co., NC and from him the Ileses descend. But we don't have concrete proof, at least I don't yet. Still think it is highly likely. I would be very interested in knowing more about Susanna wife of John Iles who was born circa 1735 and died with will in 1817. My email address is Restrepo2009@aol.com. Hope to hear from you. There is a lady in Halifax Co. that supposedly has recent information and I need to call her. I spoke last month with David Iles, of Littleton, NC who is descended from John and Susanna, and one of their other children than my line. He told me about this lady, and actually I emailed with her a year or so ago. He gave me her phone #. I'm going to try to call her today. I am descended from William who married Elizabeth Pace and moved to Louisiana. I do not know that he died in North Carolina. But since no one knows where he is buried, I guess he could have made a trip back there and then died. I don't think Elizabeth has a gravestone in LA either. I haven'[t done a lot of work in many years, but am ready to pick up on it again. Email me. Best.

There was a Joseph Iles, a distinguished Bristol merchant, who died in 1749 and is buried at Minchinhampton - with a memorial in the church. Among his kin he names (in his will) Wraxalls, a Daniel Gough in Brimscombe, a brother John Iles in Chalford, hos own children Sarah , Ann, Mary and John, and what appears to have been a transatlantic "house and co-partnership" with Benjamin and John Savage in South Carolina (probably in Charleston). Do you think this might be one of your kin?

Not sure if my last message got sent, so will repeat!
My name's Christine Edgeworth (maiden name Iles)
I'm so excited you got in touch! I'm a complete novice at thsi family tree business (only just started). Dad (Derek Iles) did mention he got a phone call a while back, though I don't know how forthcoming he was? His childhood has always been one of those family mysteries that noone ever talks about - until last weekend. My ten year old started asking him loads of questions. We didn't know that he was one of 5 (always thought just Ralph, Dad and Don). Dad knew about Albert but not Kenrick. Do you know anything? Dad revealed that he was fostered at 3 weeks, went back to his mum at 14, then joined the Raf for 12 1/2 year at the age of 16. We've met Don, but never anyone else from Dad's side, so I'm soo happy to discover there is a family out there. I'm happy to share pictures, give info and would love to find out more. How are you related to us, I wonder...
Looking forward to hearing from you
Christine (Canterbury) c.edgeworth@talktalk.net

There are many Iles families from Gloucestershire but I believe we had a match!

My material grandmother was Eliza Harriet Iles, b 1868 in Toverton, Bath, d about 1946. She married Worthy Bane, b 1867 in Pucklechurch, d 1951 on 29 October 1888 at Holy Trinity Church Kingswood. Her father was William H Iles and her mother was Harriet Britton.
The Bitton registration area is a bit misleading at times, although only a small village it's registration area was much larger.
The name Britton links into the boot and shoe industry in Kingwood. The G B Britton footwear factories only close in the 1990s. They supplied British Army boots with the discreet marking GBB. Gluv and Big T were a few of their trade names.
The Iles family owned many small houses/cottage in the Hanham/Kingswood/Soundwell area and let them as a means of income.

Regards,

Chris Burnell
chrisburnell@openfields.demon.co.uk

Samuel Chappel and Sarah Isles married at Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire on 10 NOV 1766. I suspect they are the parents of Samuel, son of Samuel and Sarah Chappell, who was baptised in Littleton Drew, Wiltshire on 24 Sept 1775 but I lack proof. Does anyone have the Hawkesbury Parish Registers? (I can't find them commercially available in CD-ROM, microfiche or book form and I don't have time to go to Gloucester and look)? Alternatively, is anyone looking at the Chappel and/or Iles family in Hawkesbury?

Hi,
I can help you with this family, particularly the ancestry of Robert ILES. I have been researching the family tree of my mother (who was born an ISLES) since 1982 and now have over 1100 individuals in the tree. (The surname changed from ILES to ISLES when her grandfather moved to London in the mid 1800s.)
Robert was born around 1840 in Dauntsey, Wiltshire, England. His parents were John and Ann ILES (nee POUND), who were married in Inglesham, Wiltshire on 11 May 1820. John was baptised in Inglesham on 13 January 1797. John's parents were Joseph and Sarah ILES (nee HEAVENS), who were married in Inglesham on 14 October 1793. Joseph was baptised at Inglesham on 19 February 1769, the son of John and Elizabeth ILES. I have the tree back a possible further 3 generations although the link to John and Elizabeth's marriage is a little uncertain.
On the subject of Harold's wife's name, the Philadelphia PA marriage index on Ancestry has Harold's wife as Phoebe E HOLLINGSWORTH. Perhaps the E stands for Emma and she was known by either name.
You can contact me at johnhodges 'at' dccnet.com for further information.
I hope this helps,
John in Canada
Have you ever communicated with Gaius Barrett Rich IV? He is from the Iles line, too, and he published a coil-bound gene study.
It starts with Dr. Thomas Jefferson Iles and has a lot of local history (Davenport, IA and the Rock Island IL Arsenal). He also includes history of wife Maria Louisa Nuckols. I can share that with you because I traded a Bawden gene study with him even up.

My link is through Mary Terrill Bawden's father, Stephen Bawden. Actually Mary's brother is my g-grandfather. I can provide copies of pics and John and Mary's bio from my family gene study.

Email me with your real address and I'll snail it to you.

Thank you for Mary and John's son's marriage info. John Thomas doesn't have a goal in life in my book. He always lists himself as 'student'.

I found a lot of information on John Thomas Iles and Edna Ophelia Mangun Iles because Kentucky kept really good death records. If you can see my tree, you can find their death certificates. Edna (b. 24 Mar 1882 in Memphis Junction, KY) died 17 Feb 1949 of diabetes and hypertensive myocarditis; they lived at 2728 S. 4th in Louisville. her father = David Mangun and Mother = Rufina (nln).

John died in February 1951 in the Old Mason's Home in Veachland, Shelby, KY. of cirrhosis of the liver and enlarged heart. Death records said he had moved there 9 months before from Louisville. Sounds like they never had kids. Occupation was listed as mechanic.

In 1930 they are renting in Louisville and he is a foreman. Says they married at age 25, which would be 1907ish.

The one weird thing is his WWI draft record. He lists his father, not his wife, as next-of-kin. But in 1930 they are together.

I am an ILES descendant. Thomas --> Washington --> Elijah Foster --> Frank --> John --> me (Clella Iles Jaffe). How are you related?
ILES - John Lowery m. Mary Terrill Bawden

This is my link to the Iles family. I have no record of John Lowry/ery earning his M.D. His father, Dr. Thomas Jefferson ILES, earned his M.D. and a spot on the Rock Island Arsenal Military Camp to be close to his sons who fought in the Civil War. He felt nobody should be without support under such dire situations.

I was doing some purging...found a 2007 email, not a message board post, from Barbara who said she has a death certificate and draft registration from WWI for John Thomas ILES, son of John Lowery and my Mary Terrill Bawden ILES. John Thomas had 2 older sisters, Mary Louise ILES, born 25 Nov 1871 in Davenport, Scott, IA, who married Wm Lewis Gansert in Rock Island, Rock Island, IL; and Alice ILES born 28 Mar 1876 in Davenport and died 21 Feb 1881 of diphtheria and is buried in Davenport's Oakdale Cemetery.

John Thomas ILES worked as a clerk for his father at their milling company in Davenport until 1906 when he listed his occupation as student. In 1918, John Thomas was living with sister Mary ILES Gansert in Rock Island, again listing his occupation as student. No burial info.

Barbara's email says she has a death certificate and draft registration for John Thomas, he is on the 1930 census living with wife Edna O. (I have no info), they were married at age 25 (no location), his date of birth is given as 9 Jun 1882 in Davenport.

This email from Barbara says John died at age 69 in Shelby, Jefferson, KY on 25 Feb 1951, Edna died on 17 Feb 1949 also in Jefferson County, KY.

Neither is yet listed in the SSDI. If either John Thomas ILES or Edna O are in your tree, I'd love to hear from you. Or if you're an ILES descendant, that would be great, also.

The email address at the end of Barbara's note is no longer valid.

Re: Daisy Gwendoline Iles

Thanks for the reply.
My interest is that my wife's (Pauline Hirons nee Taylor) father (Donovan John Ronald Taylor born 26 Mar 1924 - deceased 2007) was the son of Frank Leslie Taylor born 1903 and the mother is recorded as Daisy Gwendoline Iles. The birth was in Clifton, Bristol naming Daisy but not the father. DJR was sent to poor house nearby.
Frank's mother took in DJR and the family lived in Ledbury, Herefordshire. DJR lived there until his death in 2007.
The only Daisy G Iles I can find married a Harold France (although record on Ancestry says Prance) in Gloucester in 1937. Unfortunately due to name 'misspelling' (?) I cannot link the two.
I am not sure "my" DG is "your" DG.
My DG was born in Cirencester (I think) but is recorded as from Hill View, Brockworth, Gloucestershire R D on birth record.
I am researching the Taylor family from my wife through her father at the same time as doing my family - only just started and have not done any in depth work as yet.
If you wish to continue link my e-mail is rayhirons@hotmail.com.
May be obvious but I am assuming you are in NZ so if you have any more information I can follow up in UK at the various local record offices - if there is any that can be done.
Best regards
Ray Hirons

Iles (or Ayles, Ailes) surname, Bedminster Bristol and Dorset

I'm having difficulty tracing my great grandmother's family. On her marriage cert to Francis Morton, 1895, no father is shown. She was born approx 1876 Bedminster Bristol but I am unable to find her on the 1881 census or find her birth recorded. (The other Emily Iles I've found born around that time do not match, married other people and I've eliminated them.)

In 1891 she was living with her uncle Samuel, Aunt Ellen and sister Florence. When I looked further back to 1871 and 1881 I found Ellen was living with her mother Caroline Iles and another sister Emily born 1859 (she may be the mother of my great grandmother).

It is complicated but according to the 1881 census Caroline was born in Stour Provost Dorset. I looked at the 1841 and 1851 census and found her living with her parents in Dorset but the surname was Ailes/Ayles!

She must have moved to Bristol between 1851 - 1861 where her surname "changed" or was written incorrectly to Iles. There is no trace of her marrying, although she appeared to have had at least 3 children, one of whom must have been was my great grandmother Emily's mother but I can't find any proof or confirmation.

Any help and advice would be wonderful.
Thanks

Re: JANE-daughter of WM. B. ILES-b.

Hello, I have just discovered an American branch of my own Iles family. William B Iles was maried to Mary Chappelow I have to children for them, John C Iles 1824-1911 and Carolin M 1829-1952. Of course it's posible that your Jane was their first daughter as Mary's mother was called Jane(surname unknown)
William's father was Amos and his wife is also Jane (surname unknown)
William B and his children emigrated to New York abt 1831 after the death od his wife abt 1829 There are many Iles families around Hillsdale Co. Take a look at Find A Grave website.

Alec, Harold, Sydney or Robert Iles Yorkshire to Philadelphia

My grandfather is Alec (Alexander) Felton Iles b. 1918. His father is Harold b 1889, who immigrated from Yorkshire around the same time as his father, Sydeny Iles (possible Sydney James Iles) b. 1865, also Yorkshire.

My question is about Harold - I was told his wife's name was Emma Hollingsworth, but I haven;t been able to find anything about her. A William M Hollingsworth witnessed Harold's immigration request, but on that same form he lists his wife as Phoebe. I've been able to find a Phoebe Hollingsworth - wonder if she is also called Emma. Any information about what happened would be great. She is probably a redhead, too.

Sydney's father is Robert b. 1841 in Wiltshire and Robert's father is John Iles, possibly, no dates. If anyone knows more about this part of the family in Yorkshire I'd love to hear.
