my mother has so much stuff from Valentine Ilg. my mother thinks the black leather pouch belongs to him. i can scan the voter registration cards tomorrow at work with what i translated and send them to you. please send me your e mail so i can sent them directly to you. my work e mail is wea3@ramseyconstructors.com. by the way my name is Bill Adams and i live in Dansville, NY. My mother is Anne Marie Adams, maiden name is Connerton. she has some cool stuff about the Ilg family, she was born in Providence Rhode Island, her mother was Edna Ilg, who married John Connerton.

Thank you! I would be thrilled to have contact with anyone in your family. I have been searching for this city of origin for many decades. I also have the passenger lists to Philadelphia, but no city of origin. I would love to see those voter registration cards. Mulhouse, France is a tremendous lead! you might want to have a conversation with my mother whose great grandfather was Valentine Ilg. i just saw her family tree yesterday and she showed me the actual ticket of the ship he came over from as an immigrant to Philadelphia and migtated to Rhode Island.. Valentine Ilg was from the city of Mulhouse France which is right on the border of Germany.I have just translated some of his voter registration cards, one of them is printed in German and French. Hello,

My great-grandmother married Mathew Ilg about 1868.
Her name was Catharine Louisa Schlemmer. Her death record
in 1894 state she was born in Bavaria. Mathew Ilg was also
born in Germany, Wurtenburg, I believe.

They lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey and had 2 children, Henry Ilg was born in 1869 and Emma Ilg was born in 1870,

For anyone wondering who these are. The first picture is my Great Aunt Katie McCloskey marriage picture. She married Jim McCloskey, in the back is my Grandfather, John Ilg, unsure who the woman is next to him. Jim's Sister?
The next picture is Aunt Katie as a young woman.
And of course the other is of Great Uncle Andrew Ilg married Magdelena (Lena) Rett Ilg.

Often was the case back then that people spelt the name the way they thought it sounded and not the way it was spelt. On my mother's side their are a lot of different spellings the further you go back for the name Edgar.

Thanks. I'd be happy to hear any other cases of the name changing, especially pre American immigration.

I have Swedish ancestors named Elg/Elge, so your German/Scandinavian connection might be right on track. I have had little sucess tracking my Elg line, Ilg seems more prevalent. I suspect Ilg and Elg were often interchanged depending on who was speaking and who was hearing the name. :)

The name Ilg was changed to Elg to make it look less German when they came to Canada from Germany. My husbands ancestors are German and when they arrived with the war going on, people frowned upon the Germans. I have been wondering through if maybe they originated in Sweden orginal and then German, since I'm having a hard time tracing their routed in Germany.

Don't know this Ilg/Elg, but I'd be interested in more information on the name change. Was this a common practice for this name? Which is more prevalent? Would be interested to hear information and experiences about Ilg to Elg.

My g-g-grandma was Ebba Louise Elg, born 1831 Sweden, married sometime before 1862 to Gabriel Holmberg, immigrated to the U.S. about 1864 with family.

Thank you for the info...I have previously tried to find info at familysearch.org and had no luck. It gives me a better place to start. I never knew my great grandfathers parents names and my grandfather passed away a few years ago so there is no one left to ask.

The correct town name for your ancestors is Winnenden and it's a bigger town closed to Stuttgart.

It looks like somebody else did the same research you are doing before and entered the data at familysearch. It should be possible for you to come much more further with your research. The research for the marriage of the parents gave:

I am searching for info on my great grandfathers family. He and his two brothers immigrated from Winnedon, Germany (outside Stuttgart) in the 1880s...his name is Ferdinand Carl Ilg, brothers William and Ernest. Carl and William were tailors in the DC area and settled in Prescott, AZ. Ernest stayed in St. Louis area. Any info would be appreciated

My great grandfather Frederick Ilg came to Philadelphia in 1845 enlisted in the army then settled in the Pittsburgh area in the 1850s.
His pension record from the army lists his name as Ilg but all the records in Pittsburgh are under Elk.
He was from Wurtenburg, Germany.

This is the right line for my children. There was Pauline and Clarence Ilg before Mable. The boys were Paul, Kenny, Bill, Bob, and I think a sister? Not clear on that. Have to get in touch with my daughter. My two kids are Valerie Marie Ilg 8-17-80 and Anthony Joseph Ilg 11-6-81. Paul E. Ilg jr. is their father. His father of Course was Paul E. Ilg which was married to Lydia (Edeltraud) Ilg.

I am looking for the city of origin of my Ilg ancestors who came to pennsylania through Antwerp. The ship passenger list says only Germany or alsace for origin. My great-grandfather Valentine Ilg entered Philadelphia then migrated to Mass. He was born in 1858 in Germany or (Alsace?) and died in Mass 1928.

in Akron, Ohio and married Otillia Cueni. He died around 1958
she died in 1947. They had seven children: Ambrose, Norbert, Pauline
Bernadine, Ivan, Marian, and John. Grandpa Ilg had a sister, Kate.

Hi Bill and Liz,

No, Marian doesn't have one set up right now.
I'm hoping to get back there at the end of May
and get her set up on one though. She's pretty
excited about the idea of being able to do email
and play games!!! Not bad for 82.

Brother Chris is usually tied up months in advance
but he does visit Marian so maybe we ought to find
out when he plans a trip north next.
