The Canadian Ilsleys

Ilsley is my maiden name (which I have returned to using after being married and widowed). I am surprised that this site of the Ilsley family seems to omit any reference to our family in Canada.

You all probably know that in England there is an East Ilsley and West Ilsley in Berkshire, not far south of Oxford. I visited there about 20 years ago, and there was a monument to a very early ancestor of ours in East Ilsley. It appears the village was founded by a man name Hild in c700 A.D. "Lea" is old English for a freehold... Thus, Hild's Lea obviously came down through the centuries to become Ilsley.

My father told me our branch of the familiy emigrated from England to settle in Nova Scotia approximately 1756. I do not know of interim descendants but only for lack of researching them. :) However, my immediate family on my father's side are still in Canada. My uncle was James Lorimer Ilsley, and was in the Canadian cabinet as Minister for Finance, and was also acting Prime Minister during a period when Mackensie King was stranded in England during World War II.

My father was Philip Sydney Ilsley and he emigrated from Canada to the eastern United States in the 1920s. However, he set up a business in the midwest, met and married my mother Irene Mary Kelliher, the daughter of Irish immigrants. They sold the business, returned to New York City, where I was born.

On my father's prior trip to New York he had observed the construction of the Holland Tunnel where guniting, pneumatically sprayed concrete, attracted his attention.

When some years later he bought a small business from Pascal Paddock, Paddock Engineering Company,in Los Angeles, California, my father revolutionalized the swimming pool industry. He introduced pool construction using gunite, not poured concrete. Today, it seems this is the standard world-wide. He has been called the "granddaddy of the swimming pool industry."

So we are a branch of the American Ilsleys, but the family is very strong in Canada from Nova Scotia to Winnepeg where my cousins live.

My children live in California, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years, but I have relocated to an island in the Seattle and Tacoma area. I hope this information might be helpful in spotting more Ilsleys.

Good wishes to you all.

Hello, Marion Ilsley was my father's cousin. My father was Alfred George (called George) Ilsley and we lived in Caulfield. I visited with my father Eldorado, Wangaratta, and met with Marion Ilsley.. whom I was under the impression was married to a Dudley Shepard. Maybe the name is a called name and not a birth name? I have lots of information and if you would prefer, contact me off list and I will happily share with you.
As far as descendants - my line follows through William & Barbara's daughter, Mary. She married Samuel Moore and they lived in Woodbridge, New Jersey. They were Puritans. One of their daughters, Hannah, married into a family of Scottish Presbyterians who then moved to southern New Jersey to escape some problems they were having with the Puritans. They and their children joined up with a small Baptist group at Dividing Creek in New Jersey, and that's where my great-great-grandparents met. They moved from New Jersey to help settle Indiana, and much of the family still lives there. If your line goes through Mary and Hannah, I would be happy to share dates and details.

William Ilsley(1608-1681)and his wife, Barbara Stevens(1611-1681) came over from England in April of 1638. From the port of Southampton, they sailed on the ship Confidence with 108 other people. Among those people were Barbara’s mother, Alice, who was in her 60’s; Barbara’s two brothers; and two teenage servants. Also traveling with them was William’s brother along with a 12 year old servant boy. On the ship’s record, William’s trade is listed as a shoemaker. They all arrived in Newbury, Massachusetts, and settled there. They are considered some of the first settlers. While they were there, their daughter, 7ary(1638-1678) was born.
William (mentioned above) was born in Newbury, in Berkshire, England. Newbury was known for its cloth trade, so William probably did a good business selling shoes. He came over with a servant, so obviously he wasn’t poor. He, and others that came with him, probably named Newbury, Massachusetts, after their home in England. William’s wife, Barbara Stevens, was born in Caversham, in historical Oxfordshire, England in 1611.
William’s father was Richard who was born in 1577 probably in the Newbury area. He married Jane Lewis born about 1577 in that same area of Compton. They were married in 1607 in Compton.
Richard’s father was William. He was born about 1545 in the same area, and probably also died there in 1631. He married Joanne Piper in 1570 in Compton. She was born in 1549 and died the same year as her husband.
Right near Compton, is the modern day West and East Illsley, so the family must have been there for quite some time. The Illsley family is very old in English history which is reflected in their armorial shields. According to the "Victoria History of the County of Bershire", the ancient name of the family was Hildesley, and before that, de Hildesley. The rule with armorial shields was, the simpler, the older. Their family crest is very simple.

I have a little information on William's wife, too. Barbara’s parents were John Stevens I(1575-1627) and Alice Atkins(1576-1650). Both were born in Caversham, in Oxfordshire. (Alice's father's name was John and he was born in the same place in 1554.) They were married in 1596 in Caversham. John died after his son William was married. Alice did not remarry. William and Barbara brought her with them, along with William’s brother, John, to Newbury, Massachusetts to set up the new settlement there.
John’s parents are Richard Stephens(b. 1545) and Margaret(b. 1550). Since the family is old in origin, I would assume they were probably born in Caversham as well.

Hope this helps a little. English ancestry can be difficult to trace, especially if they were tradesman or lower in status. Let me know if you can find anything farther back.

He was the son of Harold Ilsley and I am not familiar with his mothers name. My dad Rodney immigrated with his dad Harold Ilsley to South Africa when he was 16 and that would have been in the year 1948 or there abouts. I have now relocated to United Kingdom and am very keen to find out whether I have any cousins or such from my dads side. I don't know any history from my dad side Thank you Janet

ILSLEY's - more of

Hi all. From the last message I posted saying that I had found my elusive ancestor SAMUEL ILSLEY, I have been doing some more research and find that Samuel's parents were in fact Job Ilsley and Harriet (Baker) and they married on 28 Nov 1803 at Sherbourne, St.John, Hampshire. This Job was born 18 Oct 1776 at Sherbourne, Hampshire.

Further, the parents of the Job above were Job Ilsley and Elizabeth (Stroud) who were married 23 Oct 1769 also at Sherbourne, St.John, Hampshire. I believe this Job was born about 1745.

So from all this, I am presuming that my Ilsley's came from Hampshire.

Are these Ilsleys connected to any others on the list....love to hear from anyone who can assist me.

Hello Barbara
I think we were in touch a while back. My wife is from the Ilsley line - her mother (coincidentally Barbara) was daughter of Arthur, son of Arthur, son of John, son of Thomas.

I have access to the on-line census records, and have had great problems finding Ilsleys in there, particularly 1861. According to my files, the Confidence departed Southhampton, England in April 1638 and arrived in America later in the same year. William is the brother of John. See if this link will work for you:

http://www.google.com/books?id=MIxGAAAAMAAJ&printsec=fro...

If not, you should be able to find it on Google for free under "History of the Cutter Family of New England."

I don't know who Gage Inslee's parents are at this point, but I can email you a copy of what I've got as well.
I believe that your William is the 9th son of Charles, born Str St John 1786, who was the 4th son of John, born Str St John 1750, who was the 6th son of Edmund, who married mary Cowdry in Str St John in 1737. This Edmund was probably the eldest son of the Edmund who married Elizabeth Dollery in 1702 in Reading and then Mary Dollery in 1711 in Basingstoke. I have found several branches of this family surviving into the 1881 Census, but have not found any of them in the 1901 Census Index.

Andrew.I had come across Arthur, born 1812, and worked out from the LDS records that he was the fourth of five children to Arthur, born 1876, and Hannah Eunice BOSIER. I had also noted that Arthur's father was William, but had not managed to take the line back any further.

You mentioning that William's wife was Sarah, made me have another look at my database, which contains almost 5800 individuals with the surname Ilsley or Illsley. I know see that I do have what I thought was another Arthur born in the second quarter of 1876 in Sherborne St John to William and Sarah Ann ROGERS. It does look as though this could be your Arthur and I have traced this line, largely through the use of the Sherborne St John parish records, back to Edmund, born about 1710, who married Mary Cowdry in 1737 in Sherborne St John. I have discussed with other researchers the possibility that this Edmund was the son of the Edmund born in Tilehurst in 1683, but we have not yet found any concrete evidence.
Regards, Phillip Southby

Ilsley line from Nova Scotia c. 1750

Really not Queries so much as "Other"... giving information in case someone can use it? Will answer questions if desired.

My father, Philip Sydney Ilsley, was the younger brother of James Lorimer Ilsley, both born in Nova Scotia, Canada. Philip married Vesta (maiden name unknown to me), two children (my half sisters) Dorothy and Betty. Dorothy married Alan Tarr of Winnipeg. Betty married twice and twice widowed.

Philip then wed Mildred. No children. Then he married Irene Mary Kelliher, my mother, and had me.

Philip came to the United States during the construction of the Holland Tunnel in New York, which he observed. It was using pneumatically sprayed concrete in the construction, (called guniting) and some years later, Philip applied that technique in the construction of swimming pools, and Paddock Pools, based in Los Angeles, was the result in the late '30s. He has been called the Father of the Swimming Pool Industry in the United States and abroad as he is the first to have applied guniting in the construction of swimming pools.

Philip stated the family emigrated from England in the mid-18th century and "threw Evangeline out of Acadia" (a wry sense of humor). Unfortunately I have no knowledge of the intervening generations until my father's, but they apparently issued a line that remained in Nova Scotia resulting in us.

Lorimer became Minister of Finance for Canada, then acting Prime Minister during WW II when MacMillan was stranded in England on a trip to consult with Churchill and Ministers regarding Canada's role in support of England during that war. Lorimer, after the war, became Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court (if that is the correct term... I was born and raised in the United States). I never met him nor his offspring.

I believe my paternal grandfather was named Randall Ilsley and married a Scottish lady with maiden name Caldwell. I was born late in my parent's lives and never met them.

This branch of the Ilsley family then traces back to the 1750s; prior to that, I have no knowledge except that we originated in England.

One other thing. My father disclaimed any relation to aristocracy. He said we were "yeoman farmers" dating to before William the Conquerer... and I am thinking we possibly occupied Hild's Lea in Berks. :)

I discovered that my son, Ari Philip Shenkman posted here 5 years ago! He is the family devotee of our origins. This is an amazing site. I just happened on it tonight.

I have a profile link if it would be helpful for geneological purposes: http://kis.homestead.com/ShannonProfile.html

Hope this aspect of Ilsleys helps others and would like to hear from family if this stuff sounds familiar.. :)

Missing a link or two

I know I'm also a from the line of William and Barbara, but I only have William and Barbara, Joseph and Sarah Little, and Joseph and Rebecca Noyes, without a direct link to Wade Ilsley and Lydia Mason/Plumer. Their daughter, Sarah Burnham Ilsley was my great-great-grandmother. Do you have the names that make up the complete line?
